Question: Why do you think so few women nurse thier babies for the minimum of 1 year that is recommended by the AAP? I've noticed that many people are asking about formula and their babies are fairly young. If the current recommendation by the AAP is 1 year MINIMUM (the World Health Organization recommends 2 years minimum) and studies show that less then 1% of women in the world are actually incapable of breastfeeding.... Why are the percentages of mothers who formula feed so high??
Answer: I think it's lack of education about resolving and avoiding breastfeeding problems. Plus, we've created a society of bottle feeders. We give little girls dolls with bottles and many breastfeeding women don't even feel comfortable breastfeeding in public because our societies are so ignorant sometimes.
I think some people actually think it's more normal to formula feed. They say that the more educated a woman the longer she'll breastfeed. So I think it has to do with intelligence level also. But I also know some very intelligent women who had very busy schedules and did a combo of breastfeeding and formula feeding after exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months. This is better then not doing it at all or giving up after a couple of weeks.
Question: What are the AAP guidelines for what/how much a 1 year old should be eating? Does anyone have their white AAP from Birth to 5 year book? It has an outline of feeding guidelines for a 1 year old that I'd love to have (& expect other mothers would be interested to see)
Thanks!!
Answer: Sample One-Day Menu for a One-Year Old
Taken from the AAP "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child Birth to Age 5"
This menu is planned for a one-year-old child who weighs approximately 21 pounds.
1 teaspoon = 1/3 tablespoon (5 ml)
1 tablespoon = 1/2 ounce (15 ml)
1 cup = 8 ounces (240 ml)
1 oz = 30 ml
BREAKFAST
1/2 cup iron-fortified breakfast cereal or 1 cooked egg (not more than 3 eggs per week)
1/4 cup whole milk (with cereal)
4-6 oz. juice
Add to cereal one of the following:
1/2 banana, sliced
2-3 large sliced strawberries
SNACK
1 slice toast or whole wheat muffin
1-2 tablespoons cream cheese or peanut butter
1 cup whole milk
LUNCH
1/2 sandwich - tuna, egg salad, peanut butter, or cold cuts
1/2 cup cooked green vegetables
SNACK
1-2 ounces cubed cheese, or 2-3 tablespoons pitted and diced dates
1 cup whole milk
DINNER
2-3 ounces cooked meat, ground or diced
1/2 cup cooked yellow or orange vegetables
1/2 cup pasta, rice, or potato
1/2 cup whole milk
Question: How come the AAP condones breastfeeding until 2 years of age for breastfed babies? But not formula feeding until 2 years of age for formula fed babies?
not exclusive breastfeeding, but just giving your child breastmilk along with the regular food, water, and juice
im not giving any TD by the way, if i was succesful at BF brody in the beginning i would have BF until 2 years of age.
i wish that whoever is giving all of these TDs would post their opinions.
Answer: because breast milk changes on a daily basis for years as your child's needs change. if your baby is sick it becomes more watery and helps with dehydration (a big reason i HATE when docs discourage BFing a sick baby, they are doing a huge dis-service to those babies).
if your baby has diarrhea, breast milk thickens to help prevent runny stools. our bodies are amazing.
formula has no real nutritional value after the age of 1. which is why moms are told to feed vitamin D milk after age 1, to get the vitamins and fats that they need. breast milk provides that, thus no need to stop.
the thumbs downer obviously has a billion accounts and is sitting here TDing these answers over and over again, because they are too stupid to put an opinion of their own. instead they must sit behind their computer and dish out "TDs" like that means something.
ALL that shows is that everyone is RIGHT and they are pissed off about it. so..i welcome TDs. LOL
edit:
so glad that moron was deleted. figured i'd take off my comments about IT since it's moot now. lol
Kell- no one was saying that women should be forced to breast feed. the discussion was about why the AAP tells formula feeders to stop at age 1 and switch to cows milk, but tells BFers to keep BFing until 2.
no one was dissing FFers. you do what is best for you and baby and if for someone that means FFing then that's their business. that's always been my stance.

Question: What is AAP Academic Advancement Program at UCLA? Can you benefit from the program?
Is it required if you want to succeed?
Answer: Check the web site below. Can you benefit? Possibly. Is it required? No. How good a job do you feel your high school did to prepare you for UCLA?
Question: Why are non vaccinating parents advised not to sign the AAP form, per answers to a recent question? Not looking to start a war as to if kids should be vaccinated or not. I just wondered what it was specifically about this form.
Answer: It can be self-incriminating, as it is basically forcing a parent to "admit" they are putting their child at risk.

Question: How can I get into Cornell's AAP (Art, Architecture, Planning) program? I am an eighth grader with a 4.0 GPA and I aspire to be an architect. I have to fill out my high school registration form and was wondering if it would be more beneficial to take a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) class or a free hand drawing class. Also, are there any other things that can be done in order to help my chances of getting into Cornell?
Note- My father graduated from Cornell's Business School. How much more likely does that make my acceptance?
Answer: well i am in 9th grade and also want to go to Cornell's AAP school. you should probably do the free hand drawing class because for admissions you need to have an art portfolio of things you have done with out a computer so i would say free hand. Also keep up your grades and my advice is being the leader of a lot of clubs is good so join a look of clubs that would sound good to colleges as a freshman because by the time you are a senior you would be in a leadership position for a lot of them. Lastly try to take as many honors math classes as you can.
My dad went to cornell undergrad but not for architecture either and i was looking and saw that normally at colleges they only look over your application twice but for legacies it is three times. Then you also have about a 3-5% bigger chance unless your dad is a big donator then it is even higher.
Question: Does anyone know anything about the Admissions practices to the JHU AAP programs in dc? I am just curious, my daughter has her heart set, but is not really the greatest student, and I can't stand to watch her get her heart broken.
Answer: As a professor with a daughter who chose her own university and went on through a Master's degree and then a PH. D., the best thing I did was not to interfere with my daughter's choices of a career, a marriage, her husband, her child, and her career as a successful biomedical researcher,
Johns Hopkins has very selective admissions standards for incoming students. It ha 14,848 student applications in 2008. That is roughly 24% Its scores on SAT Critical Reading range is 630-730. In SAT Mathematics, the scores range is 660-770. In writing its range is 630-730. Finally, its enrollees' score is in the range of 28-33on the ACT.
It also requires that applicants report their academic GPA, recommendations, the rigor of the high school records, student’s character, the student’s personal qualities. Other important information that is required is class rank, an essay, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities,, talent/ability, volunteer work, and work experience. Other factors also among important information about applicants that may be noted is Alumni that the applicant knows, first generation history, geographical residence, an interview, racial/ethnic status, and test scores on the SAT and ACT. Certain academic units in high school also seem to be required including 4 English, 4 mathematics, 4 science, 4 foreign language, 2 social studies, 2 histories, 2 foreign language courses.
Annual tuition at Johns Hopkins University is $33,000.

Question: Cornell University AAP College applicants: What is the application portfolio interview like? I'm applying to Cornell for Fall 09 as either an undergraduate architecture or arts major, and I'm a bit nervous about the interview process (silly, I know), seeing as how its all important and weighted. What do they expect of you, and what should I do?
Plus, do they want to see a portfolio of your work? I really only have a fine arts portfolio (paintings, drawings), so is that okay for an architecture major?
Answer: Hey there. I applied early decision to the architecture program at Cornell and got in. I wouldn't be too nervous about the interview. Just be yourself and be personable. Don't worry! There shouldn't be any questions you can't answer. At least there weren't for me. Just be ready to talk about yourself and why you want to study architecture.
Do bring your portfolio. My interviewer looked over mine. Fine arts is fine. My portfolio was entirely paintings I had done on my own or in art class as well as a few drawings. I had one painting with buildings in it, but other than that my pieces weren't strictly architecture related.
Hope this helps. Maybe I'll see you next year.
Question: What does AAP and AFP mean after a reporter's name in a newspaper article? I think its a writing agency that wrote the article with the reporter but I'm not positive and I can't find anything on google about it so I'm hoping someone knows.?
Answer: AAP Refers to "Australian Associated Press"
AFP refers to "Advertiser Funded Programing"
Question: Can someone translate this for me it is in Hindi? Kafi dino se aap ke darshan nahi hue? I would like to know what this says so that I can reply appropriately. It is in Hindi - thank you:
Kafi dino se aap ke darshan nahi hue
Answer: The phrase is a more casual way of "I have not seen you in a while," roughly the equivalent of "long time, no see."
The word "darshan" literally translates to obeisance or prayer in front of an idol ("bhagwan ka darshan karna" = to pray to God). Here, the word is used metaphorically.
Question: Can anyone tell me the AAP vaccination schedule? I live in Canada and am wondering what the schedule is in the States? I am interested in the Vaccine Book by Robert sears but would rather not spend the money on it if the schedules are totally different. I would like to delay and spread out my daughters vaccines but would like to do it with some guidance. Such as which are most important.
Answer: 2009 recommended vaccine schedule in the United States: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/downloads/child/2009/09_0-6yrs_schedule_pr.pdf
1983 recommended vaccine schedule in the United States, which included only DTaP, polio, and MMR: http://www.generationrescue.org/pdf/turnback.pdf
It was enough for us when we were kids. And you can easily take polio off the list now, since there hasn't been a single case in the United States since 1979, despite being "only a plane ride away."
Question: My baby keeps bumping her head on her crib, any ideas? I know that the AAP says no bumper pads? Is there any way besides traditional bumper pads that I can protect my daughter from bumping her head and getting her legs stuck between the bars? The guilt of seeing her get little bruises is just killing me.
Answer: Just buy the bumper pads. Seriously, this whole SIDS thing is getting way out of hand.
Bumpers are fine, people have used them for years.
Question: When is AAP going to issue circumcision recommendation for all baby boys?
Answer: Probably never.
Circumcision is genital mutilation, it's neural and vascular damage to the penis and always damages sexual sensitivity, function and ability.
Forcing genital mutilation on children is a violation of the body and of human rights.
Male circumcision is just as wrong, and even more mutilating than female circumcision---which is illegal to perpetrate on female minors.
It's sexist in the extreme and unconstitutional as such to allow genital mutilation of males while prohibiting it for females.
Circumcision doesn't prevent any diseases or infections; the only things it prevents are complete and normal sexual feeling and function.
The only benefit of circumcision goes to unscrupulous doctors who make money from mutilating the genitals of baby boys, and who frequently are members of the religions that try to impose circumcision on all males----which is how it became so widespread in the USA in the first place.
Only about 33% of male infants are having circumcision forced on them these days, as finally more and more Americans are understanding what most of the rest of the world already knew; an undamaged penis feels and functions better than a damaged one.
Circumcision is a fraud and a hoax.
A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.

Question: Are you in the Cornell university college of AAP ? i am interested in applying for architecture. please give me any information about how you got into the program
ei. what was your SAT score?
what did you do on your portfolio?
etc.
thank you so very much.
Answer: They got everything you need to find there
(http://www.aap.cornell.edu/arch/admissions/undergrad.cfm ) ,I'd recommend not going for this major at the moment, architecture right is in a dwindling depression and EVERYONE is getting laid at firms around where I live, good school though, I was on the same path as yourself and then I realized what was happening...I love architecture very much and drawing and drafting and making the models and doing at all the math and the design behind it,but there is no room for it right in this economy..I'd say switch to some sort of engineering, good luck...
