AAP

Question: Why do you think so few women nurse thier babies for the minimum of 1 year that is recommended by the AAP? I've noticed that many people are asking about formula and their babies are fairly young. If the current recommendation by the AAP is 1 year MINIMUM (the World Health Organization recommends 2 years minimum) and studies show that less then 1% of women in the world are actually incapable of breastfeeding.... Why are the percentages of mothers who formula feed so high??

Answer: I think it's lack of education about resolving and avoiding breastfeeding problems. Plus, we've created a society of bottle feeders. We give little girls dolls with bottles and many breastfeeding women don't even feel comfortable breastfeeding in public because our societies are so ignorant sometimes. I think some people actually think it's more normal to formula feed. They say that the more educated a woman the longer she'll breastfeed. So I think it has to do with intelligence level also. But I also know some very intelligent women who had very busy schedules and did a combo of breastfeeding and formula feeding after exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months. This is better then not doing it at all or giving up after a couple of weeks.
