Acidophilus Supplements
Question: Is it possible to take too much acidophilus supplement and get a bacterial infection as a result?? I began taking an acidophilus/probiotic supplement from Trader Joe's and after a month or so developed a bacterial infection. I know that the supplement is good for fending off yeast infections but what is the supplements relation to bacterial infections? Could an overgrowth of good bacteria cause a bacterial infection?
Answer: That's interesting reasoning you have there. I'm sorry I don't know the answer but I hope to see you get a good one. My guess is that you can get a bacterial infection despite taking acidophilous or else maybe you already had one and it took time to show because of the acidopholis. Ahh... that's 3 different spellings we have for acidophilous now. Hope one of us is right. No wonder they call it probiotic. A bit easier to remember the spelling.Sorry I don't have a good answer for you.
I'm going to try to check this out because I want to know more about probiotics too. If i learn anything I'll get back to you later.
Question: What are vaginal acidophilus supplements and where can I buy? Trying to cure and mild case os BV! Please Help!?
Answer: Hi,
Acidophilus will not will for BV....it will only work for YEAST....
For BV you NEED to go and get and antibiotic--even if it is only mild.
If you use acidophilus, you are going to help the GOOD bacterium, but, there will just be MORE bacterium--it will NOT get rid of the bad bacterium at all.
(sorry).
Acidophilus WILL be a good thing to do WHILE on the antibiotic--but, ask the doc if you should do the vaginal kind while on the antibiotic for BV....as it may not be as effective OR it may make things worse depending on the antibiotic.
Good luck to you.
Question: Can acidophilus geltabs be placed in the Vagina for a yeast infection? I have a yeast infection, which I bought clotrimazole 3 day treatment for. I finished the treatment, but still have some itching and burning in my vaginal area. I have tried the vinegar treatment, but it doesnt seem to work. I have been taking acidophilus supplements to help combat the problem, and it seems I read somewhere that these geltabs can be placed in the vagina. Is this possible?
Answer: Yes, there are acidophilus suppositories for the vagina.

Question: How do I take acidophilus with Prilosec or vitamin supplements? I take Prilsosec once a day, a half hour before breakfast, and a multi-vitamin with breakfast. I am adding an essential amino acid plus to my diet, which is taken an hour before meals or an hour before bedtime. And I take calcium with dinner. I want to add an acidophilus supplement to my diet. I am confused on how to take acidophilus. The label only says take with food. Will acidophilus interact with my Prilosec or vitamins? Can I take it the same time as my vitamins? Do I take acidophilus before, during, or after my meal?
Answer: no it won't interact. Just take it when you eat.
Question: Antibiotics & acidophilus supplements? Are you to take them together, or do you wait until you finish the course of antibiotics before taking the acidophilus? What if you're on day 6 of Z-pack, which you only take for 5 days but it stays in your system for 10 days?
Thanx.
Answer: No, even though the antibiotics kill off a lot of the acidophilus, I would start taking both at the same time. Best solution is to take a full-spectrum probiotic (not just acidophilus) in a form that is enteric coated (dissolves in the lower bowel) for maximum absorption & activity. I highly recommend Renew Life (http://www.renewlife.com/Probiotics/) or Pure Essence Labs Candex (http://www.pureessencelabs.com/candex.php).

Question: I took a probiotic acidophilus dietary supplement and my stomach is more upset than usual? I have problems with my stomach and I'm pretty sure it has to do with my digestive system and intestines. My mom bought me pills that support intestinal health called "Probiotic Acidophilus". I took one this morning, and my stomach has been hurting more than usual. Could it just be that my body isn't used to the supplement and I need to just keep taking it daily, or should I be taking something else?
Thanks.
Answer: oh my, we have the same problem.. where did you bought the probiotic acidophilus?
drink lots of fluids/water so the bacteria and toxins will be flushed out of your body

Question: What is acidophilus typically taken for? I have psoriasis and recently someone told me to start taking an acidophilus supplement. She said that this in combination with a diet low in sugar helped clear her skin. I have not been able to find any info linking acidophilus to psoriasis so far, but what types of conditions or issues is it normally used for?
Answer: Common uses of Acidophilus-
Treats chronic gastrointestinal tract disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, recurrent gas and bloating, and inflammatory bowel disease. Controls vaginal yeast infections.
Supplement Recommendations for Psoriasis -
Essential Fatty Acids : 1,000 mg fish oils 3 times a day; 1 tbsp. (14 grams) flaxseed oil each morning. People with diabetes should take less than 2,000 mg of fish oils a day; higher doses can worsen blood sugar control.
Grape Seed Extract : 100 mg twice a day.
Standardized to contain 92%-95% proanthocyanidins.
Alpha-lipoic Acid : 150 mg each morning. Can be taken with or without food.
Vitamin A : 25,000 IU a day for 1 month, then 10,000 IU daily. Women who are pregnant or considering pregnancy should not exceed 5,000 IU a day.
Zinc/Copper : 30 mg zinc and 2 mg copper a day. Add copper only when using zinc longer than 1 month.
Milk Thistle : 150 mg twice a day. Standardized to contain at least 70% silymarin.
Question: Which yogurt brands contain Lactobacillus Acidophilus? or is there any L. Acidophilus supplements I could buy at Whole Foods?
Answer: You might also consider a capsule supplement.
In addition to containing "Lactobacillus Acidophilus"
this contains the other helpful kind called "Bifidobacterium lactis"
These also support a healthy digestive tract.
Get one that recomends it be refridgerated.
Probably get at Whole foods or Lakewinds Natural foods or other natural stores.
I take one from "Metagenics" called "Ultra Flora Plus DF Capsules".
I think most yogurts have the lactobacillus.
I like yogurt once a week maybe, but not enough to eat every day.
Good luck and a happy healthy tract to you.
Question: How long can I take the supplement acidophilus?
Answer: I don't think that there is a time limit. Acidophilus occurs naturally in some foods and if you feel better topped up it is ok to take in the tablet/powder form or as a yoghurty drink. Remember it's good bacteria!
Personally I don't ever want Thrush or Cystitis again so I take Acidophilus and Cranberry every day.
Question: Are Omega 3 and Lactobacillus Acidophilus supplement pills (probiotics) safe to take during pregnancy?
Answer: Absolutely! The Omega 3s help baby's brain development and the probiotics really help keep your digestion on track, something that can sometimes be a big challenge during pregnancy.
Question: I have Bv infection so can i take the medication for it and Acidophilus 10 billion supplement at the same time I have Bv infection before and i didn't finish the medication because i felt better so couple of months later i got it again and now this medication (flagyl 750mg) is not working because the bacteria got used to it. So i will be going to doctor again to get a new medication. Well someone suggest that I should take Acidophilus 10 billion. So I was wondering if i can take the medication and take the supplement at the same time. Is that ok or i shouldn't? What should I do?
Answer: That is something you can ask your doctor. You get BV when the bacteria in the vagina get out of control. Antibiotics don't care where the bacteria are, and kill all bacteria in your body - this can cause a stomach ache. Taking acidophilus pills just replaces normal harmless bacteria in your body. Now, that being said, it won't hurt you to take it, but at the same time, why waste money digesting bacteria that your antibiotic will kill off?
Also, if you want to reintroduce bacteria to your system, you can eat probiotic food like yogurt.
Question: Are these prescription meds OK to take with these natural supplements? Prescriptions:
Yaz (birth control)
Spironolactone
Metformin
Natural supplements:
Acidophilus
Saw Palmetto
Chromium Picolinate
L-Lysine
Cranberry
Cinnamon
Answer: As always, ask a pharmacist or doctor, but the only natural supplement that stands out as potentially harmful to take with Rx meds is the Chromiumn Picolinate.
That's because CP may be able to change form, and some chromium (hexavalent) is very dangerous, and even if that isn't true, CP is used with L-Carnitine for weight-loss and natural metabolism production. I'd be leary when dealing with the metabolism as it might intefere or change the way the Prescription meds act and possibly react.
Question: Is there a third party web site I can use to tell me which supplements I can take together? I am wondering which supplements I can use together and which ones will counter affect each other. For example, I have heard that most fat burners can counter the affects of creatine. Is this true? What about ZMA, acidophilus, tribulus terrestis... Can these be taken together?
Answer: This seems like a pretty comprehensive list:

Question: Am I taking too many supplements? I take like 8 pills in the morning, 5 at the afternoon and 5 at night. Antioxidants, omega-3, multi-vitamin, other two to support my inmune system, acidophilus, another supplement for an energy boost. Is it too many vitamins? Do they offer the same benefits if I'm taking them all together?
Answer: No, not too many if your diet is inadequate. Ask your favourite Naturopath how to use them together for the best synergy effect. The wrong combo is causing sometimes unwanted competition between them.
