Question: Growing Gin-sing Is it best to start with the root or the seeds what is the difference? I want to give my friends ginseng to plant so they can grow and sell it ( i have been told organically grown ginseng has a high market value) they are avid gardeners. But i dont know what to start them out with… how much to get them and so on … also I see that u can start from root or seed…. Whats the difference whats better and any tips otherwise
Answer: In the area of a KY where ginseng ('sang) grows wild it can only grow from in ground old stock. That is, pieces of the plant left to take root and grow naturally.
The University of Florida (USF) should have some demographics in their horticulture section on ginseng. I do know from experience, on a farm we owned near Beattyville, KY., that it takes 5-7 years for ginseng to reach maturity and the nodules are what are left in the ground to grow.
Good luck.
Question: Can I grow my Ginseng plant outside in a planter in Scotland? I have grown a ginseng plant in my conservatory from a 3 inch plant in a ceramic pot to a 6 foot bush. Is it possible to place it outside in a planter and is it hardy enough to survive a Scottish winter?
Answer: I doubt it would survive. Here in the Highlands, my rosemary plant died this winter and I would imagine ginseng is more tender than my rosemary.
EDIT: Though this is a page from eBay, it may help to answer your question. I am NOT promoting this item, just trying to help you with some cultural instructions for it.

Question: can I grow ginseng indoors? I live in a small apartment w/no yard, if my place is cool and dry and i provide shade (like one would when planting outdoors), can i grow ginseng inside?

Question: Is it illegal to grow ginseng? and is it illegal to sell it?
Answer: Not illegal to grow or to sell.
Panax ginseng is just slow growing and tiresome to harvest, but very profitable. Roots from 4 year old plants are used. Traditionally popular in Asia, but it grows in the United States. Native to shady Eastern woodlands, it has been foraged and recently grown as a cash crop.
In fact, since Colonial times, ginseng root has been shipped from America to Asian markets. Historical woodsmen Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett supposedly earned money in the ginseng trade. And we thought they were just hunting bears....
Question: How can I grow ginseng?
Answer: HOW TO CULTIVATE GINSENG
Ginseng is sometimes a difficult plant to grow. At the very least it is a plant that requires commitment for the fact that roots are best when left to maturity in 5-10 years. It is a committed gardener that decides to plant a crop, waiting 5-10 years to harvest the best and most potent roots is a task filled with risk, patience, and an eye to the distant future.
We can ship you stratified seeds. Ginseng seeds will only sprout after two years natural storage (stratified seed).
All of our seeds are ready to plant from now until March 2008.

Question: what kind of soil is needed to grow ginseng?
Answer: American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) grows wild in the eastern half of North America, in hardwood forests.
It grows best in well-drained, porous soils with a topsoil rich in humus formed from hardwood and other leaf litter. Natural populations tolerate a wide range of pH, and grow in soils that vary greatly in level of other soil nutrients. Indications are that the species prefers a pH range of 5-6. The addition of lime to raise soil pH to this range may be desirable. Avoid very sandy or clayey soils.
Leaf litter is important as an organic fertilizer and for mulching. Light mulching in addition to natural leaf fall helps retain moisture, prevent leaching, maintain humus levels, and minimize frost heaving and damage.

Since Ginseng requires up to 70% shade a day, it grows best as an understory plant. Sugar maple and ginseng co-exist in many hardwood forests, both requiring high levels of calcium in the soil.

Question: why is ginseng grown only in ontario and british colombia (in canada)? what makes those provinces better at growing it?
Answer: Soil conditions and weather.
I can't talk about BC but in Ontario, the farmland that used to be used to grow tobacco is now planted with ginseng. It takes about 7 years, to get the first marketable product , as it is slow growing root . BUT when it is mature it brings high auction prices. Buyers from China, Korea and Japan come to Canada to buy it by the boatload.
It is considered to be a very high quality variety. One that is highly regarded by the users.
