Nutritional Diet And Health Drinks
Question: Nutritional benefits of black coffee? I just gave up cream and sugar for good for my diet. I've started drinking coffee black, which is good, but I was wondering about the health effects...
I know cream and sugar is extremely unhealthy and fattening, especially the cream, but what about straight black? Other than the caffeine, I don't imagine much to worry about.
Answer: Contrary to what people who don't like coffee believe, it's actually very good for you. 8 oz of fresh brewed black coffee only has 2 calories. It has been shown to help prevent Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Type II diabetes, and certain cancers.
The caffeinated version has 3x the caffeine of the average soda and twice that of most energy drinks.
Many people don't like coffee because they never had a good cup. I used to hate it when the only experience I had was my parents' coffee (it sucked). Now I roast my own & have 6 different way to make it and I love it.

Question: What health problems will my 7 yr old cousin have from eating only junk food? My little cousin just turned 7 and is the pickiest eater i've ever seen. He picks even the littlest specs off of foods. He eats NOTHING of nutritional value. His diet since i can remember has been nothing but junk. If he doesnt like whats served, they let him go straight to desert. He drinks tons of soda & gatorade, eats popsicles, candy, cookies, brownies, etc...It makes me sick, especially since I am a conscious eater. If he doesnt eat whats served, he shouldnt get to eat. The only thing he eats (that has no nutritional value) is pancakes which he drenches in syrup. Now, this kid is SKINNY, he's a bone, literally. How can his parents not even care!? Please explain the problems he will have only eating this way so I can show them the irreversible harm they are doing by allowing this. Thanks
Answer: OK. This sounds like an emergency to me.
Eating 'junk' foods, whatever they may be will have serious, SERIOUS life-threatening side-affects. This comes from the deficiency in the Vitamins and minerals he is starving himself of.
I could go over a million different diseases one can get from not getting proper nutrition, but i will keep it short. Heart disease from the excess of cholesteral, diabetes from vitamin D deficiency, cardiavascular disease, dimentia (long-term), DEATH, cancer, arthritis, heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis, scurvy, stunted growth, these are just a FEW of the major impacts this child could have. I have not even gone into simple side-affects of toxidity levels of certain foods or deficiency levels. Just some include:
hair loss, memory loss, weight gain, jaundice, headaches, diarhhea, poor immune systeme, chronic pain, swollen or bleeding gums, excessive bleeding, bone loss, rickets.
If you cannot convince these parents to be more concerned about their child, you should confront the child himself.
PLEASE get him help!
oh, i forgot to add, weight loss or being underweight can also be a side affect of malnutrition.
Question: will this detox diet work and how much weight will i loose? Foods to Eat
Use organic fruits and vegetables as they have less pollutants and chemicals. Organic food also has a higher nutritional content than non-organic commercialized produce.
Basically your diet should mostly consist of juiced, raw, frozen, or lightly steamed fruits and veggies. Corn and avocados should be avoided, white potatoes can be eaten only in moderation. Eating a variation each day will ensure you are getting enough vitamins and keep this diet as interesting as possible.
Foods to Avoid
Here is a brief list of foods to avoid while on this plan. To get the full detoxing effects, stick to the diet and be sure that you don't cheat!
Dairy and animal products
Bread, pasta, grains, cereal
Chocolate
Nuts
Sauces
Pickled vegetables or canned fruit
Alcohol and cigarettes
Coffee and tea (except green and herbal)
Meal Plans
- Breakfast
Variations of fruit or fruit puree are great for breakfast. They are nutritious, filling and the natural sugars will give you energy to get through the morning.
To make a fruit puree, cut up your fruit and place in a pot on the stove with a small amount of water. Cover and leave it on a low heat until the fruit is soft. Now just throw it in the blender and add a squeeze of fresh lemon to taste. I also like to add a little cinnamon.
My favorite blends contain apples, plums, nectarines, pears and berries, but really anything goes. You can also mix it up a bit by using your blender to achieve different consistencies.
- Lunch & Dinner
For your main two meals its important to keep calories low but nutrition high. A vegetable puree soup is the answer. This will give you energy to get through the day and all the nutrients you need.
Cut up your vegetables, add approximately one cup of vegetable stock, and cover on a low heat until the vegetables are soft. Now throw it in the blender and spice it up with a raw clove of garlic or jalapeño pepper (only a little as it's very spicy!). I also like to add cilantro and a little olive oil.
I like to experiment with different vegetables for this soup. Great ideas are spinach and broccoli, collard greens, zucchini, onion, carrots and sweet potatoes. Beans also make a great addition. I like to use chickpeas but be sure they are organic.
- Desserts & Snacks
This diet can sometimes leave you feeling hungry (it wouldn't be a diet if it didn't!), so its important to have some filling snacks around for when you need a boost.
Fruit smoothies are a great options for dessert or a snack between meals. You need to buy packs of frozen organic fruits from your supermarket. These lock all the goodness into the fruit and are very convenient. I actually find that frozen bananas taste much better in a smoothie than fresh ones so I peel ripe bananas and put them in a ziplock bag in the freezer.
Just add ice and a little water, then blend away! I like blends of blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and banana. Its really up to you to find a few combinations that you love. Be creative!
- Drinks
Freshly squeezed juices are very detoxing and a great way to get some condensed nutrition into your body. Fresh juice is also packed full of enzymes which are fundamental in maintaining good health and preventing disease.
Some ideas for recipes - try playing around with these super-healthy ingredients. Cucumbers, apples, carrot, ginger, garlic, beet and broccoli.
Don't forget to drink Green Tea. This is so effective as a diet aid because it increases your metabolism and reduces your appetite. It has also been used for more than 4000 years in Chinese medicine, to cure ailments ranging from headaches to depression.

Question: What time do you have for your health? Improve Your Health, Home and Cooking Skills
An article by Alexandru Brad
Health and cooking skills. What does mean to have a good health? What do we make for having a good health? First thing in mind is eating good food and make some sports. Food means have a diet or choose fresh meals…drink natural juices and natural water. Eating meat, fresh vegetables and fruits … everything you want. Or take a vegetarian stile! It’s up to you! Cooked by your own recipes or other. How we make the choose? What is good for us? Sometimes is good to visit a nutritionist or read more from ebooks first. The nutritional supplements are good for us? Maybe yes. Regarding the sports, what sports we choose? When was the last time you went in a gym classroom or in a bodybuilding center?... Many of people will say “Sorry…I don’t find the time for doing that..”. But in there home they made any gymnastic exercises, or aerobic, or fitness? Or some of them had an organized room for bodybuilding? Give some answers to these questions and get you general answer about your health and how good is your breakfast and dinner…You can also look in the mirror and take a deep look at yourself, specially in your eyes and tell yourself the truth. And what do you want to do for improving this situation, in case it is not so good?

Question: My cousin is feeding her baby a VERY inapropriate diet! I don't know how to help. Please give me suggestions!? I'm so worried about my cousin's baby. A little history first. She is about a year older than me - I am 31. She is my mother's sister's daughter and we didn't grow up together, hardly saw each other ever (maybe 3 or 4 times that I remember). She grew up in NJ and I grew up in CT. Now she lives in North Carolina. She has a daughter that is now about 7 years old and a 7 months/ 2 weeks old son. My mother has gotten a lot closer to her relatives over the past few years and really wants us cousins to get to know each other too. Anyway, my cousin found out she was pregnant about a month after I found out I was. Since we had this in common, we started talking occasionally on the phone about our prenatal experiences, etc.
I had my daughter April 9th and she had her son in the end of April. My mother went to visit her family in NC a few months ago (cousin's son would have been about 5 months old then) and when she came back she told me that my cousin had been giving her son solid table foods since he was 3 months old and started him on cereal in his bottle at a month and a half!!! Apparently this is what she did with her first child too and feels it is just fine. Obviously I know it is not fine. It's terrible and dangerous for the baby!
So last night was the first time I spoke with her since before my mother went down there to visit. We were discussing our babies and she told me she completely quit giving her son formula when he turned 6 months old. She feeds him only table food that she mashes up or blends - no jar foods because she says "he doesn't like them." She told me his usual meals are things she makes in advance (for example she makes a pot of pasta and blends it up with some gravy and raviolis or something like that). She also told me she tries to get him to drink cows milk but he won't drink it (smart kid). I couldn't believe my ears! I had to restrain mysel and gently asked her if she was aware that it is highly recommended that babies not be given cows milk or wheat products, etc until they are at least over a year old. She got all defensive and said she fed her daughter this way and she turned out just fine.
I am terrified for this little boy's health! I am very educated about children's nutritional needs and restrictions and I want to help but I have no idea how I can help in this situation. What would you do? I feel like this is definitely nutritional neglect and borders on child abuse! Please give me your opinions. I am driving myself crazy because I will feel terrible if something awful happens to this baby due to this dangerous and innapropriate diet. I want to do something but I don't know what I can do. Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I know that was really long. Thanks for reading and I really appreciate any advice.
Wow! Did you people even read my question? First of all, the point is she IS NOT feeding him nutitional food at all. Would you consider a diet of blended fried foods and raviolis nutritious? This is a serious issue and I don't appreciate the way you people are acting like I am being unreasonable. With a diet like this she could cause him to become seriously ill and vitamin deficient! She hasn't even been giving him formula since 6 months old! I care about my cousin and her baby and I want them to be healthy! I was really expecting more intelligence and maybe a bit of compassion... I know, I know... I'm obviously looking in the wrong place!
Answer: The biggest concern is stopping formula. That needs to continue until 12 months. Very scary. The rest of it...not much you can do to change it, If she is making the food from scratch, well, argh. I don't know. I started cereal at 4 months, then started baby led weaning at 6 months, now my 11 month old eats everything except seafood, milk, and anything to do with nuts.
I just don't know. Maybe, if you can get the info, contact her ped. Let him know what is going on, this way he can subtly educate her about diet and nutrition.
ETA:
Oh My God, When I read your question I was horrified. But, I thought you meant SHE was preparing his table foods. I didn't realize she was feeding him premade and fried foods. That is simply ridiculous. That child needs interference. I am still stuck on contacting her pediatrician.
OHHHHH, is she on WIC??? contact them!!!
The negatives to that kind of diet are life-long. He will not be getting nearly the vitamins he needs, not producing the fat cells that babies need. This is completely wrong on so many levels. The only other thing I can suggest is telling her mother (your aunt). However, you will need to be very careful.
Just say..."You will not believe the article my ped showed me the other day. It was all about nutrition in babies. It said that (blah blah, you insert important information here)" Then just tell her how interesting you found it, and thought she might be interested as well. Making sure not to slam your cousins parenting.
Question: Why are we told to drink milk? Three quarters of the human population cannot properly digest milk and other dairy products. Milk is not necessary for a balanced and nutritional diet. Leafy green vegetables are a superior source of calcium. Legumes and whole grains provide all the proteins required by humans, yet we are told:
"For optimal health during adulthood, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults consume 1000 mg of calcium daily."
http://www.dairycouncilofca.org/Milk-Dairy/Milk_Risk.aspx
Answer: Because the National Dairy Council spends a boatload of money to influence "nutrition" information disseminated to the public, including the food pyramid.
Question: Please help me come up with a "regimented diet"? Hey guys. I know nutritional knowledge is important and I AM interested, but I am preparing for military service and I really want to get fit as soon as possible and change the health of my body to better serve. To this end I would love to have something like an "ultimate diet" where I wouldn't have to worry about how much I eat/drink, or exactly WHAT I eat or drink in any given day.
First off, some (relevant?) info on me:
I am about to turn 20. I weigh ~160 pounds. I am about 5"6.5'.
I run three times a day, for between 20-40 minutes on average, my goal being at least 2.5 miles every time. I do some weights and calasthenics (I messed that spelling I know) but none consistently, which I'm going to work to change. I am very committed to this goal.
Secondly, this is the only thing like this I've seen in my cursory reading tonight:
"WEIGHT LOSS DIET
The program was developed in conjunction with the grant from U.S. Department of agriculture and their Food & Drug Administration. It was field tested at the John Hopkins Research Center and was approved by the Board of Directors of General Motor Corporation at a general meeting on August 15, 1995.
It is management's intention to facilitate a welfare and fitness program for everyone. This program is designed for a target weight loss of 5 to 6 Kgs per week.
It will also improve your attitude and emotions because of its systematic cleansing effects.
The effectiveness of this seven day plan is that the foods eaten burn more calories than they give to the body in calorific value.
This plan can be used as often as you like without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 pounds. You will have an abundance of Energy and an improved digestion.
DURING THESE SEVEN DAYS YOU MUST DRINK 10 GLASSES OF WATER EACH DAY.
Day One:
All fruits except bananas: Your first day will consist of all fruits you want. It is suggested you consume lots of melons the first day, especially water melons.
Day Two:
All vegetables: You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw and cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit of the amount or type. Avoid Oil and coconut while cooking vegetables. Have a large boiled potato for breakfast.
Day Three:
Any mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice: Any amount, any quantity. No bananas and no potatoes today.
Day Four:
Bananas and Milk: today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. You can also have one bowl of vegetable soup.
Day Five:
Today is a feast day: You will eat 1 cup of rice. You also have to eat six whole tomatoes. Drink 13 glasses of water today to cleanse your system of the excess uric acid you will be producing.
Day Six:
Today is another all Vegetables day. You may eat 1 cup of rice today. Eat all vegetables you want cooked and uncooked to your hearts content.
Day Seven:
Today your food intake will consist of 1 cup of rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.
Tomorrow Morning you will be five to eight Kgs lighter than 1 week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. Repeat this program as often as you like. However it is suggested that you rest for three days before every repetition.
You have your system under control now and it will thank you for all the purging and cleansing you just gave it. Even more that a diet programs it is good to follow this diet once in a while to clean your digestive system and remove toxic substances that have accumulated in the system.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
The most important element of the program is 10 tall glasses of water a day. You can also flavour the water with some lemon to make the drinking easier.
While on program take only black coffee.
Never more that 1 teaspoon of oil. Preferably do not use oil because of high calorific content. No fruit juices before day seven.
Here is what happens to your body while you are on this program and how and why it works.
Day One: you are preparing your system for upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh fruits. Fruits are nature's perfect food. They provide everything you can possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.
Day two: Starts with mix of complex carbohydrates in the form of boiled potato. This is taken in the morning to provide energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables, which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibers.
Day three eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from fruits. Your system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds.
Day four bananas and milk sound the least desirable. Today is the day you can have coffee with milk. You are in for a surprise. You probably will not be able to eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost an
Answer: Looks to me like you are doing great on your own. I may be taking some pointers from you. Good Luck!
Question: eat healthy food everyday? How did you develop you current nutritional habits?
Every individual has different nutritional habits some choose to eat healthy and some choose to eat unhealthy but the different between them is something individual are unaware. I hardly eat junks food even though they are the best things and really delicious I would love to have junks food but I don’t get time to eat. In the morning I usually have tea with a bread or cookies or probably nothing and for lunch I will have some sort of salad in school and when I go home I eat rice, chicken, vegetable anything my sister or my mom have cooked for me. Then I have to have something in the evening like fruits or juice because I usually work out in the evening so I need to have fruit or something to drink healthy and then I eat twice at night because I am awake for longer time so I need to eat and keep myself full my dinner is usually the same as lunch nothing really different unfortunately. I have developed this habit because I have been doing this for longer time and it was through my parents they cause me eat this many times but now they regret of making my habit that way because I finish everything at home.
What is the relationship of food to health?
Relationship to food to health is really big the way people act, talk or looks like really appears of what you take in to your stomach. Changes in our understanding of diet and health drive changes in the way foods are processed. On the other hand, what is available on the shelf will have an impact on the choices consumers make, thereby affecting their health. Studies have indicated that nutritional factors do contribute to the development of some of these diseases. After eating contaminated food, people can develop anything from a short, mild illness, often mistakenly referred to as "food poisoning," to life-threatening disease. Right food can make you appear healthier physically mentally and emotionally. so choosing the right food is very important.
What are the health problems that might occur from bad diet decisions?
There is many health problems that can occur from bad diet decisions such as Eating junk food during pregnancy could have a bigger impact on childhood obesity, liver disease and diabetes. Almost one-third of children aged six to 19 and 12 per cent of infants in the United States are overweight, according to a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and obesity is now the most prevalent nutritional disease of children and adolescents in the US. " A high-fat diet in the womb may also affect the "appetite centre" of the brain. Also eating a lot of trans fats that contain partially hydrogenated oil probably increases the risk of heart disease. some diet also effects your breathe which many people are unaware of it such as Low-carb diets may be good for your waistline, but you might not be able to say the same for your breath. Bad breath in the low/no-carb sect is often caused by certain chemicals that are released in the breath as the body burns fat. They are called ketones, and entering into a fat-burning state of ketosis is the hallmark of the Atkins diet. It's a difficult problem to solve because if one uses any sucking candy or lozenge, one has to be careful that it has no sugar in it
Why is permanent weight control best achieved by the combination of diet and exercise?
When you eat healthy food and exercise you remain in shape and controlled and away from obesity that you might get from junks. You are much more healthier then the rest of other who choose to eat unhealthy food for there dinner, lunch and breakfast as you exercise you burn off your calories and fats which leads you to remain much more healthier then others. Your heart is healthier you remain free from being obese and any other physical or mental disease that might occur. You are just doing yourself a favor and minimize a lot of health issues and when you take in healthy food inside you remain healthy you feel better and lighter and just happier believe it or not eating healthy food really effects your brain and pressurize your mind in a healthier way.
Answer: It is good to eat nutritiously everyday..... You feel better, have more energy throughout the day, and feel happier all over......

Question: Science Report!! Can someone help me edit it plz?!?!? Phosphoric Acid in Soda
Did you know that the average American drinks about two cups of soda a day? It’s true! — this beverage made from purified water, flavored syrup, carbon dioxide, flavorings, sugar, caffeine, and acidulants (acids) is one of the most popular beverages among Americans. However, soda is not necessarily beneficial for you. Soda is the number one source of phosphorus in American’s diets today, which is a very big health problem.
Sodas contain phosphoric acid which can cause tooth enamel erosion. Although phosphoric acid can be dangerous for your teeth, it can be devastating to your health. Phosphoric acid in soda has been found to contain arsenic and to have a Ph level close to that of battery acid. After phosphoric acid is consumed, it raises the level of phosphorus in the body and lowers the level of calcium; thus causing your body to draw calcium from your bones which can later lead to osteoporosis. The phosphoric acid in soda not only causes calcium deficiency, but can also corrode stomach linings, upset the alkaline-acid balance of your kidneys, and deteriorate your liver.
Many people turn to diet sodas thinking they will be a healthier alternative to regular soda. Although the diet sodas might contain less sugar, they contain the same amounts of phosphoric acid; therefore, diet soda is not completely healthy to drink either.
Soft drinks in general do not hold any nutritional value for you anyway. Many of the ingredients in soda have proven to be harmful and not helpful. The acids can cause erosion in teeth and deficiencies in calcium. The sugar alone can cause you to have a higher risk of obesity. Even some of the flavorings (aspartame) can cause brain tumors if taken in large doses. Overall, soft drinks are not beneficial to humans in anyway, but they can be enjoyed in moderation from time to time.
The acidity levels of soda can be tested using a simple Ph test. The erosive properties of soda can be tested by allowing soda to erode away at a tooth for a period of time. The concept could be measure by the length of time it takes for the tooth to completely erode away. The corrosive properties of soda could be tested by observing the amount of time it takes for the soda to completely corrode different metals. You could measure this concept by checking the weight of the metals every day to see how their mass decreases over time, until, finally, the metals are completely gone.
Thanks in advance!! It's for a science experiment and this is my background paper. Opinions and criticism much appreciated as well :)
Answer: goo job, you tackled the main points very well. You talked about the calcium effect caused by the phosphoric acid.
You can also talk about your counter argument. An Experiment was done by Heany and Rafferty that showed that Phosphoric acid have no correlation to Calcium excretion. A good paper not only has the proper arguments and evidence but also the counter arguments. You need to let the readers know about it and then use your points of evidence to disapprove it
"Phosphoric acid in soda has been found to contain arsenic". Elaborate on that, because I dont think that correct
Good Luck
Question: Supplementing the dangers: What are the Dangers due to the use of Nutritional Supplements? Supplements are categorized as food products and must clearly state on their packaging all the ingredients and their amounts.
Apart from excessive overdosing, which with any foodstuff or drink, however harmless, can cause problems that can be fatal, there seems no hard evidence to suggest that pharmaceutical grade supplements approved by the USFDA can be dangerous
A number of herbal supplements are recognized to have side effects in some individuals but then even Aspirin, regularly prescribed to thin the blood to avoid strokes, can be a cause of stomach ulcers.
Example of a food supplement: Nutrilite

Answer: Food supplements that contain herbs can have undesirable effects. Most reliable manufactures of supplements will have a Warning stating to check with a medical professional before taking the product. ie: if you are taking prescribed pain medication, you may be advised not to take ginseng. Ginseng raises blood pressure.
The new craze, krill oil is very beneficial for overall health. A doctor's web site states that krill should not be taken with any aspirin based products, however. Because krill is excellent for heart, brain, joint health, etc., it can act as a blood thinner taken with aspirin based products. I was also given that information at the VA in Connecticut.
Most food supplememts free of herbs are generally safe.

Answer: Tapioca is a flavorless, colorless, odorless starch extracted from the root of the plant species Manihot esculenta. This species, native to South America, is now cultivated worldwide and has many names, including cassava, bitter-cassava, manioc, "mandioca", "aipim", "macaxeira", "manioca", "boba", "yuca" (not to be confused with yucca), "Sabudana" and "kappa". Tapioca is a staple food in some regions and is used worldwide as a thickening agent, principally in foods. Tapioca is gluten free, and nearly protein free. The commercial form of tapioca most familiar to many people is pearl tapioca.
The name tapioca is a word derived from tipi'óka, the name for this starch in Tupi This Tupi word refers to the process by which the starch is made edible. However, as the word moved out of South America it came to refer to similar preparations made with other esculents.[citation needed] 'Tapioca' in Britain often refers to a rice pudding thickened with arrowroot, while in Asia the sap of the sago palm is often part of its preparationPearl tapioca is similar to pearl sago, which is used in essentially the same ways. Consequently, tapioca may be called sago, and vice versa.
