Speaking Of Diets
Question: Does diet soda affect weight loss? I drink about two diet sodas everyday. I see that most only have a maximum of about 60g of sodium in them. Can they affect weight loss? And how? Remember, I am speaking of DIET soda!
Answer: It has lots less calories and sugar than regular soda but it's still not the best for you. They have aspartame and other ingredients that can eat away the enamel on your teeth pretty bad. I've also heard that there might be a link between diet sodas and alzheimers...so why risk it?
Water is the best for you and trust me when I say that it's not impossible to kick the soda habit completely. I used to drink 3 or 4 sodas a day and have completely cut it out...lost 11 pounds in two weeks.
So...good luck!
Question: Veg'ns, where do you stand on soy products? A co-worker (an omni) of my mom's claims that veg'ns who like eating soy burgers, soy lunch meat, etc. etc. are hypocrites. He believes that doing something like eating something that looks and tastes similar to meat defeats the purpose of veg'nism and that eating something so that we don't have to give up taste and so we look more "normal" when eating is wrong.
I wondered how many veg'ns thought the same way.
I personally believe that the purpose of veg'nism has absolutely nothing to do with the taste or texture of the food, and had "meat" come from another source other than animals, this person would have no problem.
For instance, if humans knew nothing about killing animals, and instead used soy as the primary "meat" source, would veg'ns be hypocrites for eating something that would resemble cooked animal carcass?
I believe that one does not have to give up taste if they decide to make a conscious decision to not kill. Moreover, any veg'n would know that the taste between CARCASS and SOY products are completely different. Most veg'ns end up losing their taste for carcass and would much rather prefer soy products.
I don't think the purpose of veg'nism is eliminating the "meat" substance. The purpose is to eliminate the harm done to animals by food industries (when speaking diet-wise) and for some it's mainly about the health benefits. I don't see how one would be a hypocrite for eating mock-meat products.
Plus, it makes it easier for omnis to switch to veg'nism if they decide that's what they would like to do.
Pardon me if I can't explain my point very well, I guess it's one of those things that sound better in my head than on paper (or on-screen in this case).
What do you think about soy/wheat/spelt/etc. products?
xD I like your answer, Martini.
I honestly don't understand why that guy was sitting around sticking his nose up our veg'n arses, to tell ya the truth.
What pisses ME off is that this guy thought that we eat soy products in order to look normal in front of omnis. =__= If that were the case, we wouldn't be veg'ns, now would we?
Since when were others' opinions more important than the veg'n principal of not harming animals?
Answer: Okay, your mom's co-worker obviously doesn't understand the meaning of the word hypocrisy. Someone who says they're veg'n and eats an actual hamburger is a hypocrite. Someone who says they're veg'n and eats veggie burgers is not. And actually, most veggie burgers don't taste anything at all like meat. *Meat* doesn't even taste like meat. That doesn't seem to make any sense, but what I mean is no one I've ever known has eaten just plain cooked meat without any seasoning at all. Since most people go veg'n later in life (i.e. haven't been veg'n from birth), mock meats are flavored to taste like the things we've been accustomed to eating most of our lives. When it comes to how it looks, well, I know when I toss some tofu into a stir-fry or something, it looks nothing at all like any meat I've seen. Things like burgers or nuggets, etc. are just a convenient shape. Again, it's something we're accustomed to. I don't see why I should give up something vegan that tastes good, just because it resembles some form of meat in one way or another. Hell, I love making tofu scramble, which tastes absolutely nothing like scrambled eggs (and if it did, I wouldn't eat it, b/c I've never liked scrambled eggs anyway), and the only similarity in the way it looks is the color. That doesn't make me a hypocrite or any less vegan. The point of being veg'n is to reduce suffering/exploitation. I know if I stabbed a pod of soybeans, it wouldn't bleed or start yelling in pain. That's all that matters.
Question: Latest findings show that DIETING increases the chances of getting CELLULITE? Speaking of dieting, did you even know Beyonce Knowles had a diet!!?? I didn't
Answer: I hadn't seen this finding- but it probably has something to do with the loss of muscle mass and reduced body metabolism associated with dieting.
Dieting is bad for you. Eating a healthy diet is good for you.
And who the hell cares how Beyonce is making some extra coin. Do you really think that Beyonce knows what you should eat?
Question: Big people always saying on diet? Hello everyone, I would like to know as to why the people with big girth (or fat people) always speaking of diet they are currently on? but I don't see this people become thiner?
Why do they do this?
Answer: Because diets don't work:
1. Lowered sugar / calorie intake will make you tired and cranky
2. Significantly reduced calorie intake will slow down metabolism, causing any weight lost to eventually come back with friends
3. A "crash diet" is different from a "healthy diet". The former is for short-term results, while the latter requires more work, is a lifestyle change, and will result in long-term weight-loss and health.
Question: how do i improve my sex drive? Pliz help me with some ideas on improving sex drive. i have posted a few questions on yahoo answers about sexual perfomance concerning Erectile disfunction and premature ejaculation which were some of the problems i encounter occasionaly and responses have been very helpful. Now i just want to know if there is anything that can assist in boosting sex drive in addition to a good diet, exercise. Speaking of diet, i once heard aphrodisiacs do help if included, its just that i dont know exactly which type of food they fall under and the names of course. Pliz help, i really need to spice up my sex life for my girlfriend whom i love so much...Thannxx
Answer: Have you talked to a dr.? I know it's embarrassing, but you really need to get over it and do it. Some men get in slumps. Talk to a dr. to help you get over yours.
Good Luck
Question: Relatively speaking since an asian diet consists of mainly fish shouldn't they be retarded? and stupid with all the mercury in the fish?
Answer: sounds like this questions is lacking A LOT...
First would be that Asians don't mainly eat fish....And there are fish out there that contain very minimal amount of mercury...
Secondly...last I checked that retarded was synomonous with stupid....so to include an "and" was "RETARDED"
Question: Culturally Speaking, How many of you admit to taking diet pills? just came across my mind, i was sitting on a bus and a girl whips out a bottle of diet pills and a bottle of water and takes some...don't really see that that often...
Answer: I did when I was like 16 and insecure (they didn't work, nor did I really need them). But now I realize that I have a good metabolism, and as long as I don't drink a lot of sodas, then I maintain a good weight. I am also fairly physically active...I go for a run twice a week, usually. Plus, cleaning house burns a lot of calories as well, and I do that like every other day!
Question: what do you think is the best way to loose wieght & KEEP IT OFF? MANY people have struggled with weight loss, so in ur opinion wat do u think is the best way to loss weight, keep it of , maintain a balanced diet?
speak from experience if possible!
INCLUDE SOURCES if available
thanxxx :)
Answer: The best way is whatever diet you can stick to. Best advice i ever hear was to think of your new eating habits as a lifestyle rather than a diet. If you change your lifestyle, you will stick to the program and maintain the weight loss.
Question: exactly what do i need to do to loose weight? OK. so i went to http://calorieneedscalculator.com and i entered my weight, age, and height. it said that i need to burn 3760 calories a day. I also went to atkins.com, and started looking at recipes for healthy food.
i heard that in order to loose weight, i need to burn more calories than i eat.
i want to be at least 140 pounds at the end of my junior year. so that means im going to have to loose at least (my guess) 110 pounds.
so what i am asking is there a way i can loose that much weight between august and may?
and what is the best diet and exercise plan?
and speaking of diet, all the healthy food is expensive for my family.
is there anything i can fix that isn't so high, but is also healthy and sticks to my diet?
Answer: I suggest I site called www.fitday.com
You can add daily activities and it will tally up how many calories your've burned that day. You can also put in the foods you eat. So basically it will do all the math for you. Which is nice. :)
Another good thing is it includes your Basal Metabolic Rate. Which is how many calories you burn by being alive. Seriously people don't realize, just by breathing you burn calories.
You can see yours here too if you don't want to use the other site.
http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html
So don't forget about all those calories when you add up your total burned for the day.
Also the website you listed is giving you how many calories you need to eat a day not burn. Try the total health calculator. It actually gives you directions at the bottom. :) I like directions.
http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/healthcalclb.html
A good rule of thumb that i got from a physical trainer. Take the weight you want to be and multiply it by 13. And thats how many calories you should eat per day.
------
Exercise - Try walking, riding your bike to school, the store, work etc. Instead of driving or getting a ride. Do normal exercise...situps, pushups etc before school maybe? (Depends on your fitness level, take it a little at a time). I started with just bike riding because to be honest I couldn't even do 1 push up. But I'm getting better.
As for the diet stuff. I do atkins and am also a poor mo fo. lol But I suggest not buying any of there "products". They are way expensive for just a little bit of food. If you do buy any of them get them as desert snacks.
Here are some food ideas that i put on another question if you want to take a look. Be prepared for A LOT of salad and veggies. (meat is expensive)
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnwNU4OIfuqp9hAeDA2ZflMjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20080505083808AApjQTO
Atkins works good, and it works fast! BUT...for a student it might be hard to do. When I did this in high school I decided to go the plain road when it came to food because it was too difficult to do variety while being in school, and being with friends. Now that I'm older and have to cook for a family anyways, I add more variety. But if you find cooking almost every meal is to difficult, heres what i did in high school, hope it helps. Its not the best, but you will lose weight.
Breakfast - Eggs. (everyday just eggs)...maybe an omelet if I didn't wake up late.
Lunch - Salad. Or left over cold chicken that i cooked the night before. Pork rines. And diet soda. or sometimes I wouldn't eat lunch at school and eat right when I got home at 2:30. And then dinner at like 6-7pm.
Dinner - (My mom didn't cook, so I fended for myself). So I had either - Salad. 2 Pieces of chicken. Cold veggies (celery, broccoli. U can usually buy them in the little tray..don't eat the carrots though) or more eggs. Sometimes I just ate pickles rolled in lunch meat.
Not very appetizing, but for a busy high school student it worked.
I've researched atkins like crazy. So if you have any questions you can e-mail me about it. Good luck!
Question: What would you rate this diet plan? I call it the egg white diet, seems to work, but I have some questions!? FOOD ONE
1. Liquid egg white omelette with black forest ham and onions
2. White tea with Splenda
FOOD TWO
1. Ranch salad
2. Cooked chicken
FOOD THREE
1. Scrambled liquid egg whites
2. Ricotta Cheese with sugar substitute, flavour extracts and lemon
FOOD FOUR
1. Sugar-fat-free jello
2. Sugar free "lemonade" (water+lemon+splenda)
JUST SO YOU KNOW... I don't eat BOTH of the foods listed for each section in ONE day! I mean that I would eat EITHER food 1. or food 2. on two *different* days. :)
My question...Is it good? I only have about 10 pounds to lose and I know I'll be fine maintaining. I'm not going to be on this for long. I'm also wondering why people don't use liquid egg white more often! It's great! Only 20 calories/50g and NOTHING else but protein. So is there anything wrong? Is it good for a strict diet? Speaking of, can protein be fattening? Is it bad to have too much? If it helps, I am 5'7 and my goal is 130 pounds (I'm 140 right now).
Answer: this is not a good diet at all. you are missing key vitamins, minerals, nutrients and food groups. you are eating mostly protein, no carbs, no fruit and minimal veggies. this is very dangerous because your body NEEDS carbs for fuel. it is your body's primary source of energy. if you do not eat enough carbs your body will start to break down protein. this is NOT good. when this happens ketones (by product of protein breakdown) build up in your system, causing your blood to become acidic. high protein low carb diets are very dangerous for this reason because they can kill you. in order to loose the weight you need to consume at least 1200 calories a day because if you dont your body will go into starvation mode and it will STORE fat. in order to loose one pound a week you need to cut 500 calories a day. you can do this in 2 ways either cut 500 calories from your daily caloric needs or you can exercise and burn 500 calories without cutting food. it is important to eat a balanced diet that includes all the food groups along with carbs, protein and fat. you can calculate the number of calories you need to consume in a day to maintain your current weight or to get to your goal weight at this website: http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/calneed
i hope this helps!!
Question: spiritually speaking. how much alcohol do you have to consume before you start to lose your appetite? i was thinking of going on a fluids only diet this xmas.
Answer: try 10 glasses and see what happens
Question: What's your opinion on freedom of speech, poetically speaking? If someone has freedom of speech to post a poem and ask for comments on it, is it double standards to seek to deprive someone else of expressing their opinion on it - either by blocking or reporting them. A public forum is either one thing or the other - it can't be both. An excitable foreign youth, with delusions of adequacy, is currently trying to incite a riot - must be his diet. Hey, that almost rhymes. Comments and observations please.
Aragorn, I do not follow anyone's poems around - I simply sometimes respond to various people whose names I recognize. As most, if not all of you, have contacts to whom you always respond, for you or anyone to accuse another person of following anyone around is ridiculous. On another response, you accused me of reporting all of Arwen's poems. As you had no way of knowing who was responsible, such an accusation was thoroughly irresponsible. In effect, by stating as a fact something which was untrue, you lied. On that same response, you also called me a b*st*rd - now you are denying it. You are nothing but a liar through and through - and certainly no gentleman. As far as I'm concerned, her poetry is mince and I reserve the right to say so. If she can't handle one negative comment amongst all the positive ('though deluded) ones she gets, then her ego needs reining in. Also, you are again lying - Arwen has commented several times on many things I have had to say.
Do you just make your statements up as you go along? On one of her responses to someone else's questions, she said that poets have no need to wear masks because they simply write what is true - this from someone who wears the mask of "Princess Arwen" and conceals her true identity. You last comment is truly sickening - you speak of her as if she is some religious figure - instead of the pompous, deluded, mediocre writer that she is.
Cassie - I only count three women I call liars - which they are. Incidentally, I did not "infer" - the correct word you were looking for was "implied" - and I did not do that either. I came right out and called them liars - because they are. Incidentally, I would call a black man a black b*st*rd - if he was black and if he was a b*st*rd - to tell the truth is not to be a racist. I would also call a skinny b*st*rd a skinny b*st*rd, in the same way that I would call a fat one, a bald one, a hairy one, a greasy one, etc., exactly what they happen to be.
If a b*st*rd happens to be fat and I call him a fat b*st*rd, it does not mean I hate all fat people - same goes for if he's skinny, lanky, speccy, greasy, ugly, hairy - or black. (Or white, yellow, red or any colour you care to mention.) I'm not into political correctness - it's the same nonsense that says we shouldn't send "Christmas" cards in case we offend Moslems - we should only send cards which bear the message "Season's Greetings". We should call blackboards "chalkboards" in case we offend negroes, etc. All a complete pile of p*sh in my book.
Look at what's getting everyone riled up here. Someone posts a poem, gets maybe a dozen responses saying things like "OMG - Amazing - You are a true poet - You are so talented", etc., etc. - then I pop up and say "It's pants", and suddenly it's the end of the world for that person and they're never going to write again? Absolute b*ll*cks!
Anyone who would take offense at any of my comments (I'm not talking about the Iano impostors who are trying to stir up anti-Iano sentiment by putting words in my mouth) is not writing poems out of a love of poetry, but because they're looking for meaningless flattery to feed their over-inflated egos and give them a sense of self-validation that they ill-deserve. The fact remains that most of the people who post poetry on Yahoo should not be encouraged - because they are absolute cr*p at it. Have you seen America's Got Talent? Filled with people who labour under the delusion that they're going to be "the next best thing" and then humilate themselves in front of millions of people. Why? Because their friends and loved ones didn't have the b*lls to say "Give it up, Junior - you can't sing/dance, juggle. etc., worth a d*mn. Either that, or they were similarly deluded about Junior's abilities.
(Oops! Insert quotes after "d*mn" in the line above - I didn't hit the key hard enough.)
Here's the simple truth (again). People are posting poems on a PUBLIC FORUM and asking for opinions - I simply give them mine. The ones who get uppity about it are the ones on this page who email me with personal abuse, or call me names like "@sshole" or "b*st*rd", or publicly wish a horrible death upon me and try and start campaigns against me. Seriously, do you really believe those are the actions of rational, well-balanced, decent people? Just because I said I didn't like their poem. Often one lone, negative response amongst others praising them to the rafters, but they focus on the one dissenting voice as an object of hate and villification. As far as I'm concerned, those people shouldn't be allowed out by themselves.
People have to wade through mainly cr*p on Yahoo - if a humorous comment by me brings a smile to the lips of some weary traveller wading through a sea of sh*t, know what?
IT'S A JOB WELL DONE.
Answer: Freedom of speech comes with responsibility. I personally have never blocked or reported anyone. Everyone should be entitled to have their say. However, I do believe that when giving your point of view or critique, you should do so in a polite way. I don't believe you should make people feel bad. Even if a poem is absolute crap, point them in the direction of how they can improve it, or just do not leave a comment at all. There is no need to crush peoples hopes. The person you mention above could end up by doing more harm than good even though his intentions are for a clean up job of the poetry site. My view for what it's worth. Much more tolerance required here. May I add I don't see the women poets causing trouble.
Edit: ( following the points you raised regarding my earlier answer).
I do not know what went on between Arwen and you. I have no knowledge whatsoever as I do not read everything on this site. All I know is that she said she left because of you and that came in the first instance, from a mutual colleague of ours.
The other point that I want to make is that on this page alone you have inferred that four women are liars.
I was educated and brought up in a background which offered encouragement and nurture to get the best out of people. I do not understand any other way. You have opposing views to mine. I also believe in telling the truth. You can tell someone their poetry isn't any good without decimating them altogether and preventing them from even trying to improve. Also, poetry is subjective. I may feel something is actually quite pleasant and promising, when you feel it is crap. You do not appear to enjoy any free verse at all, preferring only rhyme and meter.
I am a mature woman in my 50's with family. I know only too well how youngsters can react to put downs, it would be wrong to do this. (Note I have not accused you of it because I have not seen it with my own eyes). I was anxious when I first posted on this site and I don't consider myself fragile. I was anxious about coming across the sort of put downs that you can give. If that had happened to me, I may not have bothered to have continued writing. I would not have known that I showed any promise (even you have acknowledged that)
Consideration of peoples feelings, cost nothing. I would by far prefer to be remembered as a person who encouraged someone to enjoy poetry than put them off it altogether.
As someone else mentioned further up, freedom of speech does not mean the freedom to abuse and create negativity. With it comes responsibility. That's why you can't call a black man a black b--------because it is a racist hateful remark and you would get pulled up for it. So when it boils down to it perhaps there is no such thing as complete freedom of speech because there are laws in place against racism, inciting racial hated etc.
We have very different views, but on this page thankfully are to express them.

Answer: Most people claim that "man boobs" are caused by a hormone imbalance... what they don't realise is that this isn't the "root cause". A hormone imbalance doesn't just happen, something has to trigger it.
Our bodies are made up of over 75 trillion cells. To stay vibrant and healthy they need 3 key elements...
1) Oxygen
2) Minerals
3) Being able to get rid of their waste
Because the western diet and lifestyle is so poor, our cells are seriously deprived (and these are the very building blocks on which we live). As a result some die, but even more worryingly; some mutate. Also, our bodies surround the pollution in fat to protect us from the harm it can cause.
This is the real reasoning for a build up of fat in the chest.
# Here's the crucial advice - Try this for the next 10 days and judge by your own results...
1) At least 70% of your diet should come from vegetables. The cells in your chest need the minerals to become healthy again.
2) Drink 3-4 litres of pure water a day. Water has been proven to remove fatty deposits almost immediately. It also contains essential minerals.
3) Exercise aerobically for at least 20 minutes everyday. Your body has an internal sewage system called the lymph system. However, in order to get all the junk out, it needs to be manually pumped through deep breathing. By doing so, you're getting oxygen to the cells and getting rid of the waste.
Understanding the cause of "man boobs" is just the beginning.

Question: The news told me that learning and speaking Spanish helps you lose weight, is this true? They said it works off fat calories twice as fast as diet and exercise through brain messages and contractions... something like that. It sounds silly thought and I'm not sure if I should start taking Spanish classes just yet. A lot of Spanish people are skinny, and I'm 414 pounds and really need to get toned up and decrease my sexy curves for the summer!
Answer: It would probably help. Anything that you use a lot of brain activity for will burn a lot of calories. i.e. reading burns more calories than watching tv.
Question: Culturally speaking,Do you feel sympathy for overweight people? Do you feel sorry for overweight people? Do you feel that they often have a poor understanding of how diet and a lack of exercise can affect their health and that it can be very difficult to change habits once they become entrenched?
Or
Do you feel little or no sympathy and think that overweight people are to blame for their poor dietary and exercise habits as well as illnesses such as diabetes/hypertension/cardiovascular disease?
Why or why not?
Answer: I feel bad even though Ive only had to loose five to ten pounds that can be hard
so 100 or 200 lbs can deter anyone from even trying to get here
now on the other hand allowing yourself to get an extra 200 lbs is a whole different story
Question: Do you think speaking to my sister about her son's diet is appropriate? Im taking care of my nephew for a week and I noticed everything there was over processed the choices she left me were deep fried foods, canned pasta, microwave mac and cheese ect but mainly complete garbage ( I wouldnt say it to her like that of course) My family unfortunately other than me are all horrible eaters (I used to be but have done a 180) and my sister does reconize this as shes told me before she wants to improve her diet (unfortunately I think that the lack of education in this department is the problem I know she means well but...) Im so concerned because my family has no hereditary deseases but due 100% to diet lots of members now have heart problems, major obesidy and thyroid problems, diabetes ect. Now how would I bring this up? I really dont want to put her down she is really sweet and I know she means well .... But I want to help her and teach her a little bit about how to make right choices and still be able to eat basically the same meals just in healthier ways.
Is there a way to do this without either hurting her feelings or having her furious at me?
Answer: Maybe you could try out a couple of healthy recipes this week with you nephew and see what he likes. Then go to the bookstore and find a cook book that you can add pages to and fill it with family favorite recipes, put down a few of the things you know your family likes but make sure to include the new ones you tried with your nephew. Tell your sister that you know how easy it is to get in a food rut and that you tried some new foods while she was gone and that they were a big hit and here's a little recipe book she can add to when she finds some good ones she wants to try out for herself. The healthy recipes you include will give her a place to start from, let's be honest it's hard to know where to start when changing your eating habits, and then it gives her the chance to find and add recipes of her own, gives her some control of the situation without making her feel forced into a healthier diet. Good luck.
