Question: St John's worth tea or extract(pill)- which is more effective ? And best time of day to drink the tea.. ? It makes me sleepy..
Answer: St Johns Wort is generally used as a calmative...so making you sleepy is the effect on you, & to be expected...Taking this herb is generally useful at times during uncontrollable stress & when one desires a 'calming effect'...
You can visit www.WebMd.com & read about it ...the site is easy to understand & surf through...simply type in Herbs (or choose vitamins/herbs option) then read where the search/choice takes you~ You probably are better taking it in the later eves...BUT be aware of the 'negative' effects as well...these will be defined at WebMd site when you go there...Take care!

Question: Topic: St.John's Wort Can someone please tell me the difference between the following two products...? St. John's Wort hypericin caps and
St.John't Wort standardized extract capsules?
Answer: St Johns Wort- "hypericin caps" are the same as "standardized extract capsules" ....Hypericum is the genus name of the plant itself....the standardized caps
are made from the plant which is named Hypericum perforatum(genus & species name)
"Standardized Hypericum extract" (obtained from H. perforatum)" is commonly used as a treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. In homeopathy, Hypericum is used in the treatment of numerous medical problems, yet the rate of success has not been adequately documented. Historically, the flowers and stems of St John's wort have also been used to produce red and yellow dye.
St. John's wort is today most widely known as a possible treatment for depression. In some countries, such as Germany, Hypericum is prescribed for mild depression far more commonly than conventional antidepressant medication. Standardized extracts were sold as an over-the-counter remedy, usually in tablet or capsule form. It was also available in teabags and tinctures to be diluted in water. Following safety concerns, it has been withdrawn from sale.
Question: Which brand of St John's Wort is most effective? I'm currently taking the Nature's Own - St John's Wort, which says:
'Hypericum perforatum standardized extract is equivalent to dry herb (2.7g) 2700mg. Standardized to contain hypericin derivatives calculated as hypericin 1.37mg'.
Are there any brands in Australia that are more effective, like Herron, Blackmores, etc?
Is this particular brand good?
Answer: Different brands don't always mean certain potencies or effectiveness... any good quality company's product would be just as effective as another's if they are the same dose. There are many higher quality companies out there that are readily available and well priced... just make sure the company has a good rating with either the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or USP (U.S. Pharmacopoeia), as those are the main quality assurance organizations (USP is for the U.S., GMP is for the U.S. and worldwide).
I haven't heard of Nature's Own before, but you should be able to call them and ask them about their quality ratings.
The dosage and potency with herbs makes the biggest difference on effectiveness. If that one is standardized to have 1.37 mg of Hypericin, it would be comparable to any other St. John's Wort extract around 450 mg that's standardized to 0.3% (which is a common amount). I hope this helps to clear things up!
[edit]: As opposed to Ben's spam (which he would get credit for every time you use his "discount code"), the difference in effectiveness between different brands is almost always the potency of the herb or the quality of their product. Better quality companies that use the pure product will work better than a low quality company that uses watered-down or impure products (which is why I specified to get good quality), but as long as two companies are good quality, they would have virtually identical products unless one was the whole herb and one was a standardized extract. I hope that clears it up!
Question: Lexapro with St. John's wort lotion? I am currently taking 10 mg of Lexapro a day for anxiety attacks.. I heard that mixing this medication with St Johns wort may cause serotonin syndrome.
This may be a stupid question but I was just looking at my facial moisturizer and St Johns wort extract is listed as one of the ingredients. Should I stop using this cream or does the St Johns wort not interact with the Lexapro unless it's injested??
Answer: i don't know if it cause any problems, however ask at the local pharacist and they will be able to tell you...!!!
Question: What dose is best for St John's wort? I have depression/ anxiety. I bought it from tesco's, it says 170mg standardised extract total 500micrograms hypericins each tablet, take one daily. This doesn't seem very much, when I have heard 300mg is the right dose. I need to try something, please help if you can?
It says each tablet total st John's wort extract 170.0mg providing hypericins 500.0micrograms, take one tablet daily, is this enough?
Answer: Your question makes not much sense to me.
Copy the label onto here again properly.
Question: St John's Wort and the pill? Hi I'm a senior in high school and I have been feeling anxious lately. I want St. John's Wort to work tomorrow, but is it bad that I am on the pill too? Will it still help bring my anxiety down? I have only started taking the herbal extract today.
Answer: There is a SIGNIFICANT interaction between the pill and St. John's Wort. DO NOT take the two together unless you want to become pregnant. Reports exist of altered menstrual flow, bleeding, and unwanted pregnancies in women taking birth control pills and St. John's wort at the same time. St. John's Wort is not effective for anxiety, it is used to treat depression. Also, it takes about 6 weeks of continuous use to begin to be of any benefit.
Question: What is the near equivalent of a "dropper full"? I'm just now marinating a nice St.John's Wort extract. The authors recommend three dropper fulls a day. What does that mean? What is the near equivalent if all I have is the standard teaspoon measures?
Answer: If we assume the dropper is in a 1 ounce (28 gram) bottle, 3 droppers full would be approximately 3/4 teaspoon.
BTW, if you're going to be making tinctures, may want to get some dropper bottles. All herb stores carry them & most larger health food stores, some pharmacies, too. Or buy from Mountain Rose Herbs online. Get glass, not plastic.
Question: St John's Wort and how to get off it? Hi - I have been taking St Johns Wort 1+1/2 tabs/day (bottle states "each tab.extract equiv. dry Hypericum perforatum herb top fl.1.8g stand to flavanoid glycosides 18mg stand. to hypericin 990cg". (Mediherb) for 6 years now and recently changed to taking 2 tabs/day of Hyp.p 750g with added herbs (Schizandra,Tumera and Scutellaria - combined called "Nevaton"-Mediherb)
Has anyone taken St J for a few years then gone off it? Did you experience any side effects ON the herb and/or withdrawls when you went OFF the herb? I also take Remifemin (a Black Cohosh extract). I have been feeling a little "light headed" (3 months, so am looking at what I'm taking). BP is OK. There are no side effects mentioned on the Remifemin leaflet. Also, do you have any other advice? NB. I am over 60 and also use a Progesterone cream (NOT the synthetic Progestin) and is made up by Compounding chemists. Thanks (I am a trained nurse with a keen interest in using natural therapies, NOT traditional drugs!
Answer: I am under the care of an NMD (Naturopathic Medical Doctor) and he said that you do not need to taper off St. John's Wort. I was taking it 3 times a day for 2 months and stopped cold turkey. I don't know about your other herbs. I'm on the natural progesterone cream too.
Question: Since there can be a wide range in potency of herbs; anyone have a favorate St. John's Wort product? I think I'd prefer a whole herb (as opposed to extracts) probably in capsule (as opposed to drinking a tea) and of course the most effective--the biggest bang for my buck, so to speak. Also, any positive or negative testimonials will be appreciated. Thanks, all.
Answer: I love st johns wort for my pitbull, it calms him down, no more shakes
Question: Confusion over St John's Wort dose...? Educated answers only pls? I read on the internet that the standard dose of SJW is 300mg three times a day of standardised 0.3% hypericum.
Today I bought some from Tesco's that say '170mg standardised extract hypericum'. But the bottle from Tesco says 'One to be taken daily - do not exceed the stated dose'.
So now I'm confused because 170mg total daily dose is way different to 900mg total daily dose!
Why are the doses different? Is it because Holland and Barrett have a 'weaker' strain of hypericum or something?
Should I take 2 x 170mg tablets three times a day to try and get nearer the internet suggested dose?
Answer: It depends on what that 170 mg is a measurement of. If it's of St. John's Wort that's standardized to 0.3%, then it isn't very much and you might as well buy a different one that's a larger dose. I doubt it would be 170 mg of Hypericum, but it might be a higher percentage of standardization than 0.3%.
900 mg is the normal dose for non-extracts (whole herb pills of St. John's Wort). The normal dosage for standardized extracts tends to vary depending on research and condition it's being used for, but at 0.3%, it's commonly around 600-750 mg.
Question: Does this product have safe ingredients for skin lightening??? Purified seawater, aloe vera gel, St. John's Blossom extract, arnica blossom extract, lactic acid, glycolic acid, mulberry extract, kojic acid, glycyrrhetinic acid, locust bean gum, carrageenan, white lily, ascorbic acid, citric acid, Dmdm hydantoin, undecylenoyl phenylalinne (SEPIWHITE MSH), licorice extract, white tea extract, methylparaben, fragrance
Answer: umm i dont really know but it sounds all organic so i would say yes
Question: doctor-in-training is assigned to extract MY wisdom teeth? At St. John's (because I have Medicaid), I was seen by a guy who didn't seem as assertive + assuring as someone would with years of experience. I asked him "How long have you been performing extractions or oral surgeries?"
His answer: "6 months."
He continues, "But it's okay, because the assisting doctor is the big guy here, and he's teaching us so he tells us what to do."
Umm.... Am I wrong for wanting the surgeon who's been in the practice for 45 years to do it instead of resident oral surgeons (anywhere from a few months to 5-7 years)? I asked to speak with him and he said he can't perform the surgery because he's teaching these residents.
How can I find another clinic that doesn't have resident surgeons as the only option? Do you think I'm wrong for not wanting to let them in my mouth to extract impacted wisdom teeth (the bottom jaw bone has to get cut in to). So many risks, the last thing I want is someone with 6 MONTHS of experience to do it. Nobody there is more experienced than five years, so I left.
Answer: The trainee will be closely monitored by another doctor with more experience. In your case, the doctor who has been practicing for 45 years will be overlooking his work. These trainees have just learned what to do and what not to do and have gone through years of school to understand and they have all the right tips fresh in their minds. I understand you want the other doctor to perform the extraction, but at least give the trainee a chance to prove themself.
