Tocopherol
Question: Where in the UK I can buy Vitamin E (tocopherol and tocotrienols)? I want to buy natural Vitamin E (four tocopherols and the four tocotrienols with alpha, beta, gamma and delta form). This is for cosmetic purposes only. Cannot find it on the Internet. Most of the Internet shops sell tocopherols only.
Many thanks!
Answer: If you want them for making cosmetics etc you could try SBlack.com (they sell most cosmetic raw ingredients) mostly in bulk. Not sure how much you need. They are really helpful if you give them a call.
Question: Why is alpha-tocopherol different from other forms of Vitamin E?
Answer: Vitamin E is not one single molecule but a family of related molecules called tocopherols and tocotrienols.
There are several types of tocopherols and tocotrienols of which alpha-tocopherol is known to be the most biologically active.
Consequently, vitamin E in supplements generally refers to alpha-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol itself can exist in eight different forms, but only half of these forms are known to be useful in the body.
Natural vitamin E contains alpha-tocopherol exclusively in an active form, either as d-alpha tocopherol ( or, more correctly, RRR-alpha-tocopherol) or stabilized as d-alpha tocopheryl acid succinate or d-alpha-tocopheryl acetate).
Synthetic vitamin E (sometimes referred to as dl-alpha-tocopherol or, more correctly, all-rac-alpha tocopherol) contains both active and inactive forms of alpha-tocopherol.
Natural vitamin E may also contain other types of tocopherols, such as beta-tocopherol, delta-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol.
Some manufacturers use the term "mixed" tocopherols when referring to these different types.
There are studies underway to determine whether gamma-tocopherol (which is more abundant in the diet than alpha-tocopherol) may be important for some of the beneficial effects associated with dietary vitamin E.
At present, though, there is no hard evidence for this hypothesis.
Note: Some evidence suggests that use of supplements containing high-dose alpha tocopherol alone may decrease body levels of gamma and delta tocopherol. The implications of this are unclear, but there are concerns that reduced levels of these natural tocopherols could be unhealthy.
There may also be a role to be played by the tocotrienol compounds in lowering cholesterol and decreasing arterial plaque.
P.S. well, Doctor J, is correct.
Question: What is the proper Vitamin E (mixed tocopherol) dosage for natural food preservation?
Answer: I looked online and couldn't find what amount to use. My guess is you do not want to try to do this at home. It probably best left up to the food manufacturers who hire food chemists to figure this stuff out. It probably requires special equipment, too.
Question: does tocopherol conduct electricity? im planning to submerge my computer in mineral oil. im just wondering if tocopherol is dangerous to my computer.
baby oil ingredients: mineral oil, parfum, tocopherol.
this baby oil is cheap as hellooooo! i hope i can use it so i can save money for other computer stuff.
Answer: I viewed about twenty sites on tocopherol and i couldnt find anything about it being able to conduct or induct electricity. but to be on the safe side i would not recommend using it on your computer.
You could on the other hand run some tests to see if it does or not. like for instance.... make a short solid bead across a wooden table, get a small light bulb, 9V battery and two wires(preferably red and black)cut the red wire in half connect one side of both a red and black to the battery(red to positive and black to negative) and the other wires to the light bulb, then connect both red wires to the tocopherol. if the light comes on it conducts electricity if not it is safe to use on the computer.

Question: My margarine has the ingredient acetate in it, what is this exactly? I was told by a dietician to use margarine due to high cholesteral but some people say butter is best, I really like the margarine but some of the ingredients are unfamiliar. The exact ingredient may be alpha-tocopherol acetate
Answer: Tocopherols are fat soluble anti-oxidants and acetate is what gives vinegar it's acidic taste. So maybe your margarine has some acid in it which is good, because the acid will emulcify the fat before it gets into your system. Your dietition was right, people with high colesterol should stay away from butter.

Question: Is tocopherol safe, specifically in Burt's Bees lip balm? After realizing that most chapsticks (lip balms) have petrolatum and alcohol in them, which actually makes the lips drier as the product dries, I have sought all natural products that don't contain such a thing. I'm looking at Burt's Bees lip balm. Every ingrediant seems to be great, but the one I am uncertain of is tocopherol. I couldn't find much information searching google, other than it is a form of Vitamin E. I couldn't really find the hard facts and the actual truth about whether it is safe or not. Does anybody know for sure if tocopherol is 100% safe? A citation of where you got your information would be great if you have one, if not no problem lol.
Answer: Yes it is. Very safe. Vitamin e is awesome for skin and lips
Question: Is this ingridients list in fish oil halal or haram? This is from Nature Made Fish Oil 1200 mg Omega-3 Softgels Dietary Supplement 100 ct. I want to know if this is haram or halal. Ingredients: Gelatin (Non-Bovine), Glycerin, Water, Tocopherol. Contains: Fish (Anchovy, Sardine) and Soy. Thanks!
Answer: Probably neither Halal nor Kosher. Non-bovine (bovine = cow, ox) could mean pig if it's not cow. There is also a gelatin made from agar agar (a seaweed) which is kosher/halal and vegan.
You can find the name of the company that makes it, google their address/telephone number, and then call them and ask what non-bovine gelatin they use. (Or look for a brand that says it is halal or kosher or vegan).
The glycerin is questionable too. It can be halal if it is made from vegetable matter, and then it could either be from pigs or other animals. Glycerin is made from splitting fat molecules. If the original fat is from pigs, then, no it's not halal. You could look for kosher glycerin or vegetarian glycerin which would be the same as Halal if you can't find it in your local market.
Everything else looks ok - tocopherol is vitamin E, fish is ok and soy is probably soy oil.
A way around it is to get vegetarian or kosher capsules - or - you can get the fish oil in a bottle without capsules and drink it from a spoon.
-you're welcome.
Question: Any studies that show NO contamination concerns with "botanical" sources of Vitamin E (Tocopherol/Tocopheryl)? As a health-conscious consumer, I've been trying to find skin and haircare products free of harmful chemicals (ewg.org has been a very helpful tool). EWG illustrates how some ingredients, such as "Vitamin E" (aka "Tocopherol" or "Tocopheryl") has a contamination concern ("HYDROQUINONE" - a highly toxic substance with a score of 10, the highest EWG hazard score!).
Unfortunately, most products (for skin, hair, and even babies) contain Vitamin E. So, I contacted a reputable/high-end baby product manufacturer regarding the contamination concern (i.e., When can it happen? How can it can be prevented, if at all?) Their response: It may occur during manufacturing process (NOT post-production). Plus, they "claim" it does NOT apply to botanically-derived Vitamin E.
An EWG rep informed me that this "claim" cannot be proven. So, I followed up with manufacturer, asking for any studies that would prove their claim, but they NEVER replied to my email (after multiple attempts).
Answer: If I'm understanding your question correctly, by "botanical source"of vitamin e - I'm assuming they are referring to the soybean, which is usually the natural source of vitamin e. (I happen to be allergic to soy, so I actually need to use the artificially-derived tocopheryl acetate - vitamin e - with everything I eat or put on my body). BTW, regular tocopherol usually is naturally derived, tocopherol acetate is usually the manufactured one. Anyway, soybeans as they are grown these days, are oftentimes contaminated with all sorts of pesticides (like RoundUp) and chemicals - not to mention all the phytoestrogens (which some say can promote breast cancer). So, while I am unsure about hydroquinone per se, I do not believe that botanically derived vitamin e products are any better/worse than the artificially derived ones.
Question: Beta carotene v Tocopherol? Many multi-vits include an anti-oxidant; these appear to be most used. Which is best and why?
Answer: One is Vitamin E, the other is (equivalent to) Vitamin A.
They are good for different things; which roughly divide into: A for boys, E for girls.
The division is complete bolox, of course. Male and Female physiology is a lot more similar than most people think, but the psychological need to differentiate yourself is very strong.
(If you mean 'which one keeps the tablet fresh longer' then the answer is 'neither'. They will be chosen because of their compatibility with the tablet's 'recipie', or their suitability for the manufacturing process used.)
