a word equation
Answer: discplacement.... erm
Zn + Cucl2--------> ZnCl + Cu
Question: How do zinc lozenges reduce duration and severity of the cold? Why is it that the only way for the zinc lozenge to be effective is to be taken through the mucous membrane when talking about treatment of colds? Why don't zinc tablets like the kind found in vitamin supplements have any effect as the lozenge does? By what mechanism does zinc take in the treatment of the common cold?
Answer: Zinc lozenges taken orally can help with the severity and duration of colds. They worked for me, anyway. It gives your body a "jump-start" of vitamins and boosts your immune system.
Question: What is the percent zinc in the alloy if only the zinc reacts with the acid to generate H2? ::: A zinc copper alloy weighing 7.2g is reacted with dilute hydrochloric acid to yield 820mL H2, collected over water at 747 mm and 27 degrees C. What is the percent zinc in the alloy if only the zinc reacts with the acid to generate H2?
Answer: Moles H2 = 0.983 atm x 0.820 L / 0.08206 x 300 K=0.0327
Zn + 2 HCl = ZnCl2 + H2
moles Zn = 0.0327
mass Zn = 0.0327 mol x 65.39 g/mol=2.14 g
% = 2.14 x 100/ 7.2 =30 %
Question: Can the Zinc in peanut butter make my cold go away faster? Me and my little brother have colds right now and my little brothers is pretty bad, i've been searching quick remedies to help me and him get better quicker and i've read that Zinc was good for sore throats and such.... The only thing i have that's quick and easy with zinc in it is peanut butter... has anyone tried this? Does anyone think it might work?
Answer: I have never tried it or heard of it so I dont know what to tell you.
I would imagine so because...well..its Zinc.
Vitamin C helps the most though...
Also for a Sore Throat you can Pour about three or four spoonfuls of salt into a glass of warm water and stir it up.
The you gurgle it and make sure it gets way back in your throat.
Although it hurts at first, trust me It works.
Question: How to seperate a Zinc and Brass mixture? I have a mixture of small pieces of zinc and brass that I need to seperate. I was trying to do a chemical seperation, such as dissolving on of them in an acid, but am having a hard time finding a solvent that will not dissolve the zinc in the brass too. Can I seperate them based densities? I am away from a Chem lab, so I don't have a lot of specialized equipment. Thanks.
Answer: densities are relatively close
try a solution of NaOH, or of HCl to "dissolve " the Zn, & I think the brass will remain
Zn & HCl --> ZnCl2 (aq) & H2
Zn & NaOH --> Na+ & [Zn(OH)4]-1
don't try HNO3, it will "dissolve" both
Question: How do you tell the difference between zinc and other magnetic metals such as aluminium? My pet bird might have zinc poisoning (results coming back next week) and until then I want to remove any toys which have zinc in them (some have metal clips for instance). I know some are stainless steel because they're not magnetic, but how do I distinguish between zinc and other metals, without actually destroying the toy? I don't want to have to remove all of his toys because he's so attached to them.
Answer: Firstly, your assumption that aluminium is a magnetic metal and later that stainless steel is not are both incorrect. In reality, stainless steel is a magnetic and aluminium is not. You can test this by taking a magnet (such as those that are used to stick notes on the front door of a fridge) and see if it sticks to a stainless steel item (eg. the blade of a knife) and if it does the same on an aluminium surface (eg. the frame of a metal window).
Considering how you can tell whether something is made out of zinc, it wouldn't be easy without chemical analysis. However, it is not likely that your bird would get zinc poisoning by coming in contact with a zinc surface. To draw an analog with humans, lead poisoning takes place when food of some type is eaten containing compounds of lead and not by touching (let alone eating) solid metallic lead.
Question: How do I get zinc dissolved in hydrochloric acid out of solution? I put a penny in hydrochloric acid. The copper plating floated to the top after all the zinc was in solution. I want the zinc. How do I get it out of solution?
Answer: The zinc will be present as Zn2+ ions. Sodium hydroxide will not reduce the zinc back to zinc metal. Sodium hydroxide will precipitate the zinc as Zn(OH)2, but too much will redissolve it as Na2ZnO2 or Na2Zn(OH)4. I would suggest adding sodium carbonate instead to precipitate the zinc as zinc carbonate. Be sure to skim off the copper before precipitating.
This will give you a pure zinc salt. Getting this back to zinc metal is difficult - it can be smelted with carbon, but at the temperatures required, the zinc often boils off or burns off as ZnO. If you just want to get metallic zinc out of a penny, the best way is to melt it over an alcohol lamp or gas flame. The zinc innards will melt before the copper, and poking the copper skin with a screwdriver (or other tool) will release the molten zinc.
Question: Why is zinc good for voltaic cells? How does magnesium and copper give off so much voltage? When i did the experiment, the magnesium dissolved in the acid really fast and gave off a lot of voltage. The zinc didnt give off as much but lasted longer. Does this have anything to do with its locations on the periodic table?
Answer: thats why batteries are made from acid
Question: How many atoms of zinc make up the zinc coating on a steel washer? I'm not quite sure how to figure this out. In chemistry class, we reacted the washer with hydrochloric acid to make hydrogen gas and zinc chloride. We measured the amount of hydrogen gas produced as well as taking measurements like mass, diameter, and thickness of the washer before and after the experiment. I was also given the density of zinc and the atomic radius of zinc.
So any ideas? How would I figure this out?
Answer: The major problem with this experiment is that you cannot be certain that the HCl has attacked only the zinc and not the base metal that the washer was made from - I suppose iron, seeing it is galvanised or zinc coated.
If you can be sure of this then your problem is very easy.
Let us say that you weghed the washer before and after treatment by the acid and you found a loss in mass of 0.05g.
The molar mass of Zn is 65.39g, so you will have removed
0.05/65.39 = 7.65*10^-4 mol Zn
From Avagadro's number we know that 1 mol Zn will contain
6.02*10²³ atoms
Therefore, number of atoms removed:
= 6.02*10²³ * 7.65*10^-4
= 4.61*10^20 atoms
This is one way to do this. You must use your own figures for mass loss. I still have a major problem that no matter what you do the acid will attack the iron as well as the zinc.
Question: What right zinc supplement should i buy for my body odor? Are there any specific brand names for these zinc supplements? Is it just suppose to be pure zinc?--coz i've checked a list of available medicines and all i saw were zinc combined with another element.
What do i tell the pharmacist? does it have side effects?
Answer: I can't find any support by way of evidence based medicine or research for the use of Zinc in body odor. Perhaps there's some anecdotal sites out there that make such claims, but I believe good 'ol deodorant will work just fine, but you may have to try some different brands in the process.
Zinc is Zinc. I doubt any particular brand will have any advantage over the other. (Kind of like Vitamin C, you know?)
Best of luck.
Question: How long does it take for zinc to start increasing sperm count? Hi! My husband just started taking 50 mg zinc a day along with a good multivitamin. How long will it take for the zinc to increase sperm count? Thank You!
Answer: Well, first they have to turn it into those little weight sets, then they have to get off the couch and start using them, so, probably 6 months...
Question: How to tell a Zinc–carbon battery leak from a Alkaline battery leak without knowing what cells were installed? I need to be able to take the evidence from a battery leak of D batteries and determine if it was Alkaline or Zinc-carbon batteries that were installed. The leak was wet and gooey, and the contacts on the device it were in were also damaged. Are there any particular signs and determining evidence to look for to differentiate the two?
Answer: Potassium hydroxide leaks from Alkaline batteries and form a feathery crystalline structure.... check the "leak" section of this wikipedia page:

Question: What is a good Zinc and Copper supplement to Give my horse? My horse needs more zinc and copper in order to get his weight up he has alot of iron but not enough zinc and copper. So what is a good zinc and copper supplement?
Answer: Don't feed Red Cell, which is mostly an iron supplement, and should never be fed unless a horse has been determined to be iron deficient through blood testing. Feeding excessive iron can produce iron overload (hemochromatosis) which is a serious toxic condition.
Zinc and copper should be ingested in the diet. As another poster mentioned, these minerals function in a critical ratio, but we don't know what that ratio is. It appears that a higher ratio of zinc to copper is a problem, with excessive zinc causing deficiency in copper to develop. The best way to provide these minerals is not through supplements, but by providing a diet that is rich in them, which isn't hard to achieve. I'm posting some information that should help you on this........................
