Alcoholics

Question: alcoholics? okay question to all the general alcoholics. What is or was the turning point in your disease that lead you to stop drinking? When is the stopping point for most? How do you tell if you are true alcoholic? okay, well i know this is not a blog area. BUT i have been in the hospital already for something i did while i was drinking. No permanent damage though. Though when I buy a bottle of scotch I can drink it in three days. BUT I have never missed a day of work. Although gone to work hurting before.

Answer: I don't know how much the "alcoholic" label really adds to your concern. If your drinking isn't "bad enough" for you to "deserve" the label, then what does that mean? Does it mean you *don't* drink 1/3 of a bottle of scotch every day? Does it mean you *don't* have hangovers at work? My point is that the analysis shouldn't be about the label you place on what's happening. Instead focus on what you want out of life. Is this what you want? If it is, then go live your life. If you don't want to live this way anymore, then quit drinking. It can be done. I did it 9 years back. I had pretty much the same drinking pattern you describe. That was enough for me...although an incident where I was found by my husband passed out in puddle of pee speeded up the decision process quite a bit. Now, you don't have to join AA (in fact I suggest you don't, after many years of being an active member I concluded that it really IS a cult). Lots of people quit or moderate on their own. If you find you need help there are numerous online resources such as SMART Recovery, SOS and LifeRing and a moderation group called Moderation Management. Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that life is much better without those damn hangovers. MUCH. Good luck and I hope you have a happy new year.
