Alcoholics
Question: alcoholics? okay question to all the general alcoholics. What is or was the turning point in your disease that lead you to stop drinking? When is the stopping point for most? How do you tell if you are true alcoholic?
okay, well i know this is not a blog area. BUT i have been in the hospital already for something i did while i was drinking. No permanent damage though. Though when I buy a bottle of scotch I can drink it in three days. BUT I have never missed a day of work. Although gone to work hurting before.
Answer: I don't know how much the "alcoholic" label really adds to your concern. If your drinking isn't "bad enough" for you to "deserve" the label, then what does that mean? Does it mean you *don't* drink 1/3 of a bottle of scotch every day? Does it mean you *don't* have hangovers at work?
My point is that the analysis shouldn't be about the label you place on what's happening. Instead focus on what you want out of life. Is this what you want? If it is, then go live your life.
If you don't want to live this way anymore, then quit drinking. It can be done. I did it 9 years back.
I had pretty much the same drinking pattern you describe. That was enough for me...although an incident where I was found by my husband passed out in puddle of pee speeded up the decision process quite a bit.
Now, you don't have to join AA (in fact I suggest you don't, after many years of being an active member I concluded that it really IS a cult). Lots of people quit or moderate on their own. If you find you need help there are numerous online resources such as SMART Recovery, SOS and LifeRing and a moderation group called Moderation Management.
Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that life is much better without those damn hangovers. MUCH. Good luck and I hope you have a happy new year.
Question: What is the difference between Alcoholics and people who get drunk every week? You know those people who drink enough to puke every Friday night but can still hold down a job and not a social outcast. Someone who can hold their liquir but eventually get so drunk that the only other thing on their mind is either banging some girl or going for a CURRY! Would these people be considered alcoholics?
Answer: some people don't know what they talking about.I use to get drunk every night. But I did not "need" the alcohol,I drink because I like to get drunk.I have not had a drink in a few weeks and I have no withdrawals. You are only an alcoholic if you wanna be.I think it's all in peoples head.
Question: What do you think of so-called recovering alcoholics, and drug users who take over your home? My 10 year old son and I are being asked (told) to leave our home, because the owners couldn't sell the property at the outrageous price of $800,000 for a 4-plex, so have decided to make it a rehabilitation home for alcoholics, and drug users.
Should I be PO'D as heck?
Yes it is legal for them to do this, to good families.
If some of you think kicking a child out of a safe, and secure home is just dandy, then I say you're a liberal, and have no care for children.
Answer: They have probably figured a way to bilk money from the government by doing this.
Question: Do recovering alcoholics and reformed smokers bore you with there "you shouldn't do that attitude? I'm a reformed smoker but I wouldn't tell any one not to.
Reformed alcoholics just took it all too far, you can enjoy a drink!
Answer: it gets right on my googlys
Question: How many alcoholics are there in alaska? to many people have pointed fingers, mostly at race, and, I want to know as to just how many alcoholics there are in alaska statisticaly.
Answer: Here's some information from various State of Alaska / Social Services websites:
"In 2004 and 2005, 5-6% of Alaskans were classified as “heavy drinkers”, meaning that men drank an average of more than two alcohol drinks per day and women drank an average more than one drink per day."
"An estimated 29.9% of Alaska adults report binge drinking (having five or more drinks on an occasion, one or more time in the past month). Alaska’s rate of binge drinking is among the highest in the U.S."
"Alaska Natives account for 36.6% (293) of the alcohol-related deaths, although they account for 16.5% of the state’s population."
Additionally, this link will provide you with statistics broken down by race and major causes of alcohol-related deaths: http://www.epi.hss.state.ak.us/bulletins/docs/b1996_06.htm
Question: How do I use an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor as a professional reference? I'm a recent college graduate searching out my entry level job as a preschool teacher or private school teacher. I've also been sober for 2 years in Alcoholics Anonymous. My sponsor has offered to be one of my references on my applications for employment but every time it asks "Relationship" I don't know what to put her as without giving away my anonymity. Does anyone know how to do this??
Answer: I'd suggest asking your sponsor if you could do some work for them --housework, yardwork, ect. And then you could say for applying that this person is a family friend who has paid you for odd jobs.
Question: What would be good symbolic retribution for Alcoholics? I am doing a project on the inferno - Dante
What would be good symbolic retribution for alcoholics?
Answer: You could feed me cream cakes until I am sick.
Question: How do you identify alcoholics, drug dealers, and abusers? Well, my parents are getting divorced, and I have a feeling my mom might start dating again. I just want to be sure she is safe, because she kinda tends to not see things like that. How can you identify people (men) who are alcoholics, drug dealers, abusers, or any other bad things? How would I protect my mom?
Thanks Justin.... =)
Answer: Your mom gave you birth, so I assume she is older than you. In other words, she is an adult and should be able to recognize these things if her child can.
But, that isn't to say I don't understand you -- I COMPLETELY feel you because I dealt with the same issue with my own mother, and she refused to listen to me... I tried every approach: easy, tough, quiet, loud, etc... she just didn't listen.
I learned something though: tell her something to the tune of "Hey, Mom, I love you and because of that, I just want to let you know I think this man might be bad for you. It seems to me he may have a problem with (whatever) and I just don't want to see you get dragged down by it."
Even Jesus said it's up to the person receiving the message to take action, so you have done your part.
Don't waste your youth in trying to protect her when she won't listen to you.
Good luck!!! I'll keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers.
Question: What causes that red faced look in men who are alcoholics? It only seems to happen in older men they get that worn red face when they are alcoholics, what is the medical cause of the facial coloring?
Answer: Rosacea, when the capillaries are flush all the time from the alcohol
Question: Can an advanced stage alcoholics stop drinking without physically dying? I understand certain addictions (drug related) have to be physically monitored by a doctor or they might die, so is it that way w/ alcohol too?
I'm not talking about how addicts/alcoholics have to go to rehab and get help, I already know that. I'm talking about if someone quits alcohol cold turkey, can they die?
Answer: Quitting alcohol cold turkey will not kill you. However you have no way of knowing what damage has been done to the body by drinking, genetics, etc. So therefore the added stress the mind and body has to go through to detox from alcohol could exacerbate (flare up) some underlying condition in the body and cause untold problems while detoxing.
Always best to detox from drugs or alcohol under medical supervision. At a rehab or in hospital. At least the person would be under supervision of people who can spot symptoms that may need medical attention should they occur and those same people are able to facilitate getting quick assistance for the management of those symptoms.
All that being said, even if the person were 100 % healthy besides being an alcoholic , detoxing on your own rarely works and it may make you feel as if you are dying. Cold turkey will definitely be alot worse than detoxing under supervision.
Question: Do you think it's possible for a recovered alcoholic to be able to drink again like non-alcoholics? I remember reading a while back about a controversial new rehabilitation for alcoholics where they teach you how to control your alcohol intake, not eliminate it. What do you think? Do you think this could work for some alcoholics?
Answer: That idea would be good for social drunks, no alcoholics.
Question: Where can I find an Alcoholics Anonymous app for my blackberry? Anyone know of an alcoholics anonymous application for my blackberry? Specifically, I am looking for a meeting schedule app that I can download to my phone. Any help is appreciated.
Answer: The closest thing I could find for you was a AA book for the blackberry. It doesn't look like it has anything to do with scheduling or meeting locations though.
I will keep searching for you..
Question: Is it true that registered alcoholics get more benefits because of their addiction? I have been told that alcoholics receive more benefit moneys than other persons, if this is so what possible reason can the Government have to increase the price of alcohol, as it is the taxpayer who will lose out. If in fact more benefit is paid then why are the authorities continually trying to have us believe that they are concerned for the nation's health?
Answer: Alcohol addiction can be extremely serious. Many people have lost jobs, and loved ones simply because they could not tame thier alcohol habits. I suggest you seek some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a list of addiction treatment centers so you can help. http://www.addictionselfhelp.com
Good Luck
Question: Why Is It Considered Politically Incorrect To Makes Jokes About Native Americans Being Alcoholics? But it is considered perfectly fine to make jokes about the Irish being alcoholics ? Why the double standards ?
Answer: People celebrate St. Patrick's day HOW?????
Question: Why do alcoholics hallucinate after not drinking? I know not all alcoholics hallucinate and others get effected more intense then others, my question is WHY does the brain start hallucinating? why would the body want to bring up scary hallucinations for not getting a bad drug? i don't see why the body would do this?
and i refer to the body hallucinating after not getting alcohol.
Answer: Alcoholics who are well into the stages of later alcoholism are extremely physically addicted to alcohol. At this stage this is one of the way the brain reacts when alcoholics are withdrawing from it. People can actual die... now this is well into the stages of advanced alcoholism, people that are used to drinking 24/7 over years.
