Question: What alternatives are there to driving a car? I live in a very steep, hilly rural community, and am medically unable to get a drivers licence. What practical, affordable alternatives are there to driving?
I walk to and from work every day, but for further distances I need other alternatives.
Public transport is very limited here and my medical problem involves a balance and muscle coordination issue - so can't ride a bike - perhaps a tricycle, but there are a lot of very steep hills around town.
Any ideas?
Answer: Segway, Taxi (expensive), Grand Parents, three wheeled scooter (or scooter with side-car), power wheels, 4 wheel bicycle, 3 wheeled electric bicycle... thats all I can think of

Question: What alternatives are there to a document image processing system? I am trying to work out if there are any alternatives to using a document image processing system in order to help a business go paper free, and to make it easier to find files etc.
Does anyone know what the alternatives are? There must be some.
Answer: Not sure what you mean .. the definition of 'paper free' implies 'electronic (scanned) image' which in turn implies some sort of 'image management' system ...
There are hundreds of DIMS offerings .. they go by different names depending on the 'focus' and how well integrated they are with MS Office etc .. for example, some focus on simple work-flow by the passing of 'links' via your existing email system, whilst others are complete 'suites' of software with their own private (proprietary) 'repositories' (archives & on-line databases) and require you to install specialist applications on every users PC (so they can impose Security and Audit Trails). ..
Unless you are a very large organisation, I would suggest going for a simple 'off-the-shelf' solution using standard / existing MS software (such as Sharepoint).
Question: What are alternatives to painting apartment walls? I've got plain white walls in my apartment and I'm trying to find alternatives to painting them as I am not allowed to do anything to the walls that would be considered permanent such as painting, or putting up wallpaper. I'm not looking for decorating tips on how to liven up the space with furniture or accessories, I'm just hoping that there is some sort of alternative to paint that gives the impression of the walls being painted. Thanks!
Answer: Ummm..this is tough. You can't paint, hang wall paper or liven anything up with accessories and furniture and want a new "paint" look to the walls. Hmmmmm....?
Try "big" monochrome art panels.

Question: Alternatives to burning wood or coals in your fireplace during the upcoming winter months? I've tried those single logs that burn for 2 hours and then I've also tried regular burning wood, but it's a messy job early in the morning when I have to sweep all the ashes, and I suffer from terrible allergies.
I am a conservationist and my family and I are trying are best to search for other possible alternatives to cutting our heating, gas, and electric bills over the winter months. Does anyone have any good suggestions?
Answer: Since you are a conservationalist there is really only a few options for you to effectively use your open fireplace in a "green" way. First lets get the bad news out of the way...
The first thing you must understand is that open fireplaces always waste more heat than they generate. Think of them as a wood toilet. I know it sounds counter-intuitive since obviously a fire generates heat. But, the air movement that a fireplace creates in your home is referred to as the "stack effect" and it literally sucks heat out of your home. The fire in the fireplace is grabbing your interior air that your furnace already worked hard to heat and is using it for combustion and tossing it up the chimney along with most of the heat the fire is creating. Meanwhile, your home cannot remain a vacuum after loosing all this air mass, so it starts sucking in cold outside air from other weak points in the home envelope (like windows and doors). In return for this massive waste the fireplace casts a paltry 10% of its available heat forward as radiant heat.
The US Department of Energy has put some statistics to the use of fireplaces. They estimate that a homeowner will consume 10% - 20% more furnace fuel if a fireplace is used regularly in that home.
Now for the good news...If your main goal is to get usable heat from this fireplace an upgrade is in order. An efficient fireplace insert is the only way you can control the heat and air access to your fireplace. plus they are usually equipped with a fan that helps you harvest all that usable radiant heat coming from the insert. An upgrade like this will cost you a few thousand dollars for an efficient model. Unfortunately, the quality manufacturers of these are backordered for about 4-5 months this winter.
Here is the cost effective option: If you don’t have a couple of grand to drop on an insert, and you are looking to just get a little ambiance from your fireplace, you can go this route. First, get that fireplace damper plugged up nice and tight with a chimney balloon damper. Inflate it in the fireplace flue to stop the heat seepage and cold draft through your old damper. Then get a candelabra with some soy candles and put it in the hearth. The soy candles are not petroleum based so they will not push out soot into your interior air. Beanpod makes a pretty good product, but there are others as well. If you have 5 or 6 candles burning in the fireplace you will get a nice flickery glow to the room that is every bit as pleasant as a flickery wood fire, but not as wasteful.
Some people swear by the electric style fireplace inserts, and you can go that route too. They are inexpensive compared to wood inserts, but my opinion is they look a little cheesy.
Question: What alternatives are there in an emergency? I'm not one for raising my voice, even in an emergency. List creative alternatives.
O.o a rape whistle, although, I'm not sure people will react to a whistle like they would to someone yelling help.
Answer: A whistle
Question: Any alternatives to reduce water condensation in the air of a bathroom besides external venting? Putting in an external vent in my bathroom is not practical and although certain times of the year I use a small space heater, this is not enough to reduce the moisture to my liking after taking a hot shower. I'm looking for any alternatives to reduce the humidity and moisture in my bathroom.
Thanks in advance for all serious and thoughtful answers.
Answer: A small dehumidifier. I found one on Amazon.com that is about the size of a 1/2 gallon of milk. It works pretty good too.
Question: What are the alternatives to the current stimulus proposal? I am just trying to get all the information that i can regarding the current economic situation.
So my question is: What are the alternatives to the current stimulus proposal?
I am also wondering if someone could give the best and worst case scenarios regarding the current stimulus proposal; and the best and worse case scenario for alternative proposals.
Answer: Difficult to adequately address these issues in this short format. Here's the short of it:
Alternatives:
Do nothing: could be catestrophic...could also correct naturally, but all agree, it would be very lengthy at best.
Tax cuts: dramatically shrink government...once again, slow private economic correction at best.
Stimulus proposal: Massive debt to China and Japan. Will create/save jobs in the short term and serve to update aging infrastruction...buys time.
**Boils down to this. There is an option on the table. May fail..probably will fail...but will undoubtedly buy time. We're in unchartered global territory with limited options for short/longterm correction. I say why not...Americans sold our souls to china years ago...a little late to reverse the tide now!
Question: What alternatives are there for high blood pressure treatment? I've been taking traditional prescribed medication for my blood pressure for some years, and am concerned about the side effects. Does anyone know of any alternatives that work?

Question: What alternatives are available for getting fiber in my diet? I don't get enough fiber in my diet. I try to eat more vegetables and whole grains. Due to a career change I am always on the go and I'm not always able to prepare a healthy meal for myself. I will sometimes grab a bag of chips or an unhealthy snack and go. Are there alternatives available to help a person get more fiber in their diet?
Answer: First off, veggies -- good, low cal, high in fiber.
Now that that is out of the way, my fiber secrets are high fiber-low cal whole wheat tortillas. Use them for breakfast burritos, sandwich wraps, or taco shells for dinner. Good stuff there. Also, and this is huge, fiber one cereal. 1/2 cup has something like 14 grams of fiber, which is 1/2 your daily needed amount. So, have a cup of that in the morning and you are set for the day. It doesn't taste too bad either, it has kind of a honey flavor.
Question: What alternatives are there to sugar fondant and buttercream for wedding cake frosting? I'm interested in a wedding cake that tastes good, not one that looks pretty. I never understood the concept of making food look nice but taste terrible. Sugar fondant, in my opinion, tastes and smells like caulking and buttercream is always too sweet and has a nauseatingly grainy texture. Are there any other alternatives to these two for the icing on a wedding cake? I'm having my wedding indoors in early spring so melting isn't a problem.
Answer: Decorator Frosting:
2/3 cup shortening (Crisco is best)
Sift 4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2-3 Tblsp. milk
Beat above till smooth. Cover with a damp cloth until ready to use. You can spread this on cake, and dip your knife in hot water to smooth out, as well as make flowers or other accents. This is very tasty. Hope this helps.
Question: What are good food alternatives to ice cream? I'm helping with a local elementary school Ice Cream Social. We would like to provide food alternatives for the kids with allergies/medical conditions.
There are kids in the school allergic to:
•Dairy
•Artificial Sweeteners
•Red food dye
•Sugar (Type 1 Diabetes)
•Nuts
•Wheat
We need inexpensive, easy to serve alternatives to ice cream, hot dogs, chips, and punch.
Answer: between ice cream, popsicles and sugar-free jello, you should have everyone covered. you can also provide sugar-free and dairy-free whipped cream to put on top of the jello, to make it more festive.
these items are easy to serve and run around the price of ice cream.
they're not super healthy, but everyone will be able to eat something!
Question: How do we develop energy alternatives on other planets? Assuming we colonize, say, Mars. Would we need 1 energy alternative or several before colonization would be possible? Should we consider using fossil fuels? And test how different energy alternatives effect that atmosphere/ or have a "control" on a habitable moon?
Answer: Re: fossil fuels - aside from their timeliness or not, they are named FOSSIL fuels because they are the product of once-living matter. Since we have no proof of anything living anywhere else (and especially not on other planets / moons that we may try to colonize), it is a safe bet that we won't find fossil fuels anywhere else in our solar system. So unless you are thinking of sending huge tankers of gas throughout the solar system (something that would take more fuel to transport than would actually be delivered), fossil fuels are out.
Renewables, by their very nature (non-conumptive and constantly available) are more likely candidates. Solar is available everywhere the sun shines, though advances in efficiency will be required to make it practical (also necessary since Mars and many moons are further away from the sun and thus receive less sunlight). Wind is a good option for a windy place like Mars, though turbines (or whatever) would need to be protected from the talcum-fine dust.
Nuclear is also an option, since the fuel consumed is relatively small. Still some hurdles about sizing it appropriately, but definitely feasible.
Finally, in any kind of realistic timeframe for colonization, there is a pretty good chance of other viable energy sources becoming available. The elusive cold fusion is one that comes to mind.
Cheers.
Question: Is encouraging youths to seek alternatives to the Military a good project to start? Such as I will join a group that offers alternatives to the military, I may branch off and do my own thing. I want to enourage 10,000 youths to seek an alternative to the Military, then my mission is complete. Ultimately, the Military will improve, and people will be generally less unhappy.
Honestly the military is not a jobs program and doesn't help people get a job after a 4 to 6 years enlistment. It gives general work experiance, but that is about it. The qualifications do not necessarly translate well or cross over into the civilian sector in mot cases.
The GI Bill isn't what it is cracked-up to be, neither is T.A.
Recruiters LIE, someone needs to save these people from these predators.
Answer: The whole military system is a joke Nothing against the soldiers but your not well paid and you don't really get allot out of joining but your expected to PAY the ultimate price die for what a small portion of the government believes is the right thing to do...they prey on the misfortune of the countries poor and misguided by making false promises and not coming through on many ... How many wounded soldiers would you say now have a better life because of the gov? How about the ones who died? Or their families??
That being said I believe ANY person serving in our military who is wounded, hurt or killed in service including mental problems that are caused from seeing and doing many things they do SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.. of course in the case of the dead soldiers how do you compensate their families??? Say sorry?Give them Money? I cant answer what exactly they can do but it should be Much more...How many times have you seen a veteran who served our country struggling to make a living even living on the street??? Its not right that they aren't taken care of . Any one in service should never have to worry about anything for the rest of their lives. when you get out of the military you should be celebrated as a hero and our government should make sure you can live comfortably especially if you are unable to take care of yourself .
