Anemia Treatment
Question: Anemia treatment? I'm a bit on the anemic side of things at the mo - soooooo tired all the time and the rest of it. My fault, not had the best diet of late. What foods/veg/supliments would be good for this? I know red meat = iron but any other info would be gratefully recieved.
Answer: The best way to build your iron is to take an iron supplement. Drinking orange juice can help you absorb the iron.
Milk and Coffee both keep you from absorbing iron so don't take milk, coffee, or things high in calcium with the iron pill. Folic acid will also help you build up blood cells.
Make sure to drink lots of water to keep your blood volume up.
To get iron from food you should eat fortified cerials, and oatmeal. You could also cook things in an iron skillet, which adds iron to anything cooked in it.

Question: I think I have anemia? How long is treatment for anemia? Alright well, I'm pale naturally but I'm starting to look like a vampire, I can't go to work without almost passing out on my boss, I have massive dark circles at the age of 28, I'm always light headed, I'm always depressed, constantly tired, random nose bleeds, lighter blood than four months ago my blood used to be very dark. Another thing, lack of appetite even when hungry, lack of sexual appetite. Also how long is treatment for anemia?
Also I am not able to go to sleep easy.
Answer: The symptoms that you mention here have giving a pretty much sound of anemia. Like pale skin, lack of appetite even hungry. Other symptoms that you may have include Fatigue, weakness or fainting, nausea, brittle nails, sore tongue, unusual food cravings for substances such as ice, starch or clay etc.
The period or course of treatment depends upon the severity of anemia. Use of iron is mostly recommended in this condition in form of tablets as well as injections. Blood transfusion is also recommended in severe cases of anemia.
Question: What is the best treatment for anemia and why? With blood tranfusion there is risk of infection. Iron supplements may take longer time.
Answer: Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood is deficient in healthy red blood cells, which are the main transporter of oxygen to organs. If red blood cells are also deficient in hemoglobin, then your body isn't getting enough iron. Symptoms of anemia -- like fatigue -- occur because organs aren't getting enough oxygen.
Your doctor will not treat your anemia until the underlying cause has been established. The treatment for one type of anemia may be both inappropriate and dangerous for another type of anemia.
Question: What are some ways (Self-treatment) to prevent or just help you if you have Sickle Cell Anemia? Self treatment. Can a person with Sickle Cell Anemia control it by changing some of his or her daily habits?
Answer: No. It is a genetic disorder, and the genes are telling the body to make the blood cells in a shape that get lodged in the blood vessels - Nothing you can do yourself will change your genes, or change the shape of your blood cells.
Question: Aranesp a common treatment for anemia? My doctor prescribed Aranesp for my anemia. This medicine costs over $1300 for a two month supply. Also, I will need to have lab workups every month, plus see the prescribing doctor every month. I feel as if he has gotten his clutches into me and I'll never get out.
If Aranesp is indeed what I need, fine. But another doctor says I don't need it right now.
I don't know what to do. My hemoglobin level is 10.3.
Answer: I copied the piece below from a web search. This is another brand of a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production called Erythropoetin. Patients with Kidney disease do not make erythropoetin. They end up being very anemic and they also tend to loose red blood cells if they are on hemodialysis. A double whammy - so they are are given products like this instead. It may be expensive but is much cheaper and safer than blood transfusions.
Other people besides Kidney patients may be given this product also. It really depends on why they became anemic to begin with. Iron deficiency anemia is usually treated with iron. some patients end up anemic from surgical blood loss. For religious reasons they may refuse blood transfusions and receive products like this instead. A Hgb of 10.3 is pretty good - but it depend on your history and whether you are experiencing symptoms or if you have a heart condition. It is not possible to diagnose a condition on one lab value or a brief description. It is possible that the physician that said that you do NOT need this may not know your complete picture. It would be very good for you to talk to the doctor that ordered this and explain that this is very costly, do you need this, is this the safest treatment, and what your other options are.
Below is the website excerpt:
Aranesp® is indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic renal failure, including patients on dialysis and patients not on dialysis, and for the treatment of anemia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies where anemia is due to the effect of concomitantly administered chemotherapy.
Aranesp® and other erythropoietic therapies may increase the risk of cardiovascular events, including death. The higher risk of cardiovascular events may be associated with higher hemoglobin and/or higher rates of rise of hemoglobin. The hemoglobin level should be managed carefully to avoid exceeding a target level of 12 g/dL.

Question: I want to know about recent treatment for sickle-cell anemia diseas? Need information concerning different treatments available for sickle-cell anemia.
Answer: Health maintenance for patients with sickle cell disease starts with early diagnosis, preferably in the newborn period and includes penicillin prophylaxis, vaccination against pneumococcus bacteria and folic acid supplementation.
Treatment of complications often includes antibiotics, pain management, intravenous fluids, blood transfusion and surgery all backed by psychosocial support. Like all patients with chronic disease patients are best managed in a comprehensive multi-disciplinary program of care.
Blood transfusions help benefit sickle cell disease patients by reducing recurrent pain crises, risk of stroke and other complications. Because red blood cells contain iron, and there is no natural way for the body to eliminate it, patients who receive repeated blood transfusions can accumulate iron in the body until it reaches toxic levels. It is important to remove excess iron from the body, because it can gather in the heart, liver, and other organs and may lead to organ damage. Treatments are available to eliminate iron overload.
In search for a substance that can prevent red blood cells from sickling without causing harm to other parts of the body, Hydroxyurea was found to reduce the frequency of severe pain, acute chest syndrome and the need for blood transfusions in adult patients with sickle cell disease. Droxia, the prescription form of hydroxyurea, was approved by the FDA in 1998 and is now available for adult patients with sickle cell anemia. Studies will now be conducted to determine the proper dosage for children.
Question: What is the treatment for aplastic anemia?
Answer: Prompt treatment of the underlying cause and removal of any bone marrow suppressants are essential to recovery of the bone marrow. Blood transfusion may be necessary if stem cell levels are very low. Bone marrow transplants may be helpful in younger patients but the success relies on the accuracy of the tissue match using human leukocyte antigen (HLA). This process is complicated with chemotherapy and radiation needed to prepare the recipient's bone marrow for the transplantation.

Question: For treatment of anemia and lethargy? After having the second child, who is a month old and having a 3 year old, she suffers from anemia and lethargy. What can be done to help improve energy levels? We know about the iron supplements, but were wondering if there was anything else that would help?
no its for the mother not the children
no its for the mother not the children
Answer: I would not be asking a question like this for my 3 year old online. It is better to get a doctors opinion that can test your child and see exactly what the child need. There can be so many things. Sometimes a simple chewable multi-vitamin may work, but I would rather get answers that are 100%.
Question: Does anemia improve without treatment? I went to give blood about 3 years ago and the doctor told me I was slightly anemic( wasn't my regular doctor). I never brought it up to my regular doctor. Can it get better without treatment?
Answer: Being a blood donor is ok. I have donated blood 3 times already with 4 months interval. The common cause of anemia is Iron deficiency. Just take vitamins with iron, sleep early don't stay up late. Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables.
