Anorexia Nervosa
Question: Anorexia Nervosa? I've self-diagnosed myself with Anorexia Nervosa. Why? I skip breakfast and lunch, and then after school I try to prevent myself from getting home as long as I can so I won't be around food within my reach. When I have no choice, I go home and drink a 220 calorie drink that delays hunger for up to four hours. I then stay up in my room and do all that I can do prevent me from leaving to go into the kitchen.
I think I'm fat, though I know I can't be with my pant size. (28x30 s don't fit without belts. I'm a guy for the record.)
I don't want to start eating again because I feel different this way. I'm trying so desperately to not let my life be controlled by hunger and having the need to eat to go on.
I just don't want to eat, but I'll gladly get nutrients somehow else.
What can I do?
I do at least 40 minutes of cardio EVERY DAY along with weight training every other...
Answer: ok. i used to eat like less that 1200 calories a day 2 years ago. and i felt horrible. then i started eating right cuz i saw a nutritionist. i was sooo malnourished even if i did drink ensure plus. but yea u need to eat. u dont want to die do you?
you need to LIVE to EAT not EAT to LIVE.
Question: Anorexia nervosa? If you were ever diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, what were your stats (height/weight) and symptoms at the time?
Answer: I was 5'2 and 61lbs...and symptoms aren't really relevant!! I mean the doctors tell you that your heart is failing..and all your organ systems are shutting down..but one who suffers from this condition doesn't seem to care...at least I know I didn't!! however if you are talking about what an anorexic does then thats simple..it is basically a mental condition..in which one does not want eat...because of the fear of gaining weight...one is also preoccupied with the shape and size of their body. One will do whatever it takes to lose weight...for example I exercised excessively and took laxatives...to speed up the process... however every case is different...
Question: What are some causes of anorexia nervosa? One of my childhood friends was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa a couple months ago. She was in counseling, and now she's in a treatment facility. I was just wondering what some causes of anorexia are. She wasn't overweight before, and she's always been on the slim side. If it helps, she's 19 and was in her freshman year of college.
Thanks for your answers.
Answer: Well some say that anorexia can run in families. It is suggested that a person who has a sibling with anorexia can be up to 20 times more likely to suffer from it themselves than another person.
Some research has even suggested that many anorexics are found to have high levels of serotonin in the brain. However some argue that this is a consequence rather than a cause.
Anorexia is also linked to many 'over achievers' and 'perfectionists' and sometimes to those suffering with depression or OCD. They focus on weight loss as a diversion from their psychological problems.
I personally think the main cause is social pressures from the media and the people around us.
The media promotes that being skinny, means being 'perfect', happy and successful. People are led to become unhappy with their bodies and strive to look like the unrealistic pictures they see in magazines. Another pressure is that of other people. Some anorexics had previously been overweight and/or bullied about their size.
Question: What are the health risks or anorexia nervosa? What are the health risks of anorexia nervosa? Is it possible to cause yourself to get diabetes from it?
Answer: Not diabetes, but here's a list copied word for word from another site (reference below). You don't need to worry about diabetes, but even as a teenage with anorexia heart attack is a real and serious threat to those suffering from anorexia.
If you think you or someone you know has anorexia, please ask for help.
* Irregular heartbeat and heart attack
* Anemia, often related to lack of vitamin B12
* Low potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate levels
* Increased cholesterol
* Hormonal changes (can lead to absence of menstrual periods, infertility, bone loss, and stunted growth)
* Osteoporosis
* Seizures and numbness in hands and feet
* Disorganized thinking
* Death (suicide is responsible for 50% of fatalities associated with anorexia)
Question: Is there a disorder that resembles anorexia nervosa, but is entirely different? Say, one is nervous of LOSING excess weight, and eats a lot?
I would say the opposite of Anorexia nervosa, but that sounds stupid.
Answer: No, such a thing does not exist. The closest thing I can come up with is called 'reverse anorexia' - you see this predominantly in males, especially bodybuilders. It is the pervasive feeling of "not being strong enough" and thus having to consistently work out.
Question: How are learning and cognition affected by bulimia and anorexia nervosa? Now that you had an opportunity to read more about hunger and eating behavior, discuss how learning and cognition are affected with bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Compare and contrast the two disorders. Remember to cite your responses. what does the research say about these disorders?
Answer: Hunger is a basic physical need.
Without satisfying that physical need learning and cognition which are mental abilities cannot happen.
You can cite this claim using Moslow's Hierarchy of needs, I'm sure your teacher/professor will appreciate it.
Also, in order to diagnose one with anorexia he or she must be underweight. with Anorexia, the body is actually deprived of food, and there is no basic fuel to "run" the cognitive process.
Bulimia, on the other hand,involves binging and purging which does not deprive the bulimic of basic nutrients but masses up other systems such as electrolytes, hearts, digestion and etc.
Question: What is the stigma associated with Anorexia Nervosa? The stigma i got was that it was a negitive one, and that people think it is his/hers fault that they are abusing their bodies in such destructive ways. But is the stigma actually about the person suffering Anorexia Nervosa thinking their fat?
Answer: a stigma usually refers to something that a mass of people disapprove of.
But i think theres actually jealously tha that person can control what they eat and do with their bodies. .
Question: How do i know i have anorexia nervosa? Not just anorexia. I already know i have that, anorexia is just an eating disorder. But anorexia nervosa is a mental disorder and an eating disorder. So what kind of thoughts would i be having if i had anorexia nervosa?
Answer: Anorexia nervosa is a mental illness- if you had anorexia nervosa you would have to fit the following standard or diagnosis:
-Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa have a refusal to maintain a healthy body weight
-Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa have a refusal to see themselves as underweight; they are incapable of understanding that their health is at risk because of their low weight
-Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa have an irrational fear of gaining weight
-The patient's weight is less than 85 percent of what is considered a healthy weight
Anorexia refers, in theory, to poor eating habits- basically you can have two days of anorexia if you're suffering from the flu because being ill diminishes your appetite. But, generally, anorexia refers to the psychological disorder- nervous loss of appetite. When you have anorexia, you are using weight as a means to express your stress. It's a really broad topic:

Try starting there. Anorexics are generally trying to obsessively organize their thoughts and daily schedules. They are very concerned with control and often have OCD behaviors outside of food, though food dominates their every waking thoughts. They constantly calculate calories and plan out when they'll eat, how they'll eat it, and what they'll eat. They isolate themselves, frequently weight themselves, and, in general, devote their lives to food.

Question: How long does it take someone who has developed anorexia nervosa to begin losing weight? FIRST OF ALL: take note that i am not the one suffering from this horrible disease. its a very good friend of mine, once i've had since i was three. i am sixteen years old, i've done research. i've also suffered from bulimia nervosa, but never anorexia. i dont care for personal opinions, because im sure we all one in the same. but she suffers from the symptoms of the disease, but she's been acting funny for about two weeks. and hasn't been losing any significant amount of weight just yet, and i don't want to jump right in and accuse of her of something, when it might not be the case. so if anyone knows the time that it may take to lose a significant amount, please let me know. and i am also not here to judge others who suffer, because i don't believe in that. please please let me know, ASAP!
Answer: Whoever you are asking this for, anorexia can take a different amount of time for different people, as it depends on metabolism. Maybe for an average guess...maybe about a week? With bulimia you lose the weight right then and there.
And if you are interested in anorexia please seek help!

Question: Are there any other girls suffering from anorexia nervosa? I am currently suffering from anorexia nervosa but I am getting alot better.I just wanted to know if there were any other black girls suffering from an eating disorder.
Answer: I am not a black girl..but I did experience anorexia way back in the sixites, before they even really knew what it was. ..I am a very bright talented woman,..and for me, what triggered it in the first place, is when a guy l liked called me a 'big horse' to my friends..so I was SOOOO hurt, that I decided to lose weight. I lost 55 lbs in three months...I lost it soo fast, that to me, i still looked fat in my eyes and mind...for eight months i stopped having periods, and went down to 105 lbs, at 5'8"...my nickname needless to say , was twiggy...I was obsessed with everything i ate and for the first time in my life, I was skinny like the models were...until one day, my sister and I decided to do our hair a blonde color. So we went outside and put a big mirror against the fence, because we were perfectionists, and wanted the roots to be perfect lol...and i got a look at myself in the mirror. I looked like a concentration camp victim...not one guy thought i looked good, and they didn't fail to tell me. I was shocked, and for a fleeting moment, thought, "goodness, look at her?"...I then started eating and gained up to about 125,..and got a great little body...I suffered for years trying to look skinny...and now that i am older, I have learned that the only one who really matters is me pleasing God, and I am never going to try to destroy this temple again like that...so, if you are a religious girl...just know your body is your temple, and you have to take care of it for Father God, and Jesus...and you know im right about that!!! God Bless, and Good luck...I would actually be interested myself to know if any other black girls are suffering anorexia..because most of them are built so magnificently, and their men usually do NOT like skinny women like that....Good luck to you and don't be afraid to eat and get healthy again.
