Question: why are antioxidant vitamins purported to be important for older adults?
Answer: It's a marketing thing: the average age of the developed nations of this world is on the rise, because of all the post-war baby boomers getting older.
People who are middle-aged are worrying more and more about looking younger and reversing damage they could have done to their bodies when they were younger. They are also more worried about heart disease and cancer. Anti-oxidants are supposed to help protect and heal. Therefore, the makers of these vitamins market them to this huge population that is worried. Its actually really smart.
But antioxidants are good for everyone. Try to get them from your foods, though, instead of in a pill form.
Question: Is antioxidant just another word for certain vitamins? Such as vitamin A, all of the different types of B vitamins, C, etc?
Answer: Nope, not all vitamins are antioxidants. You can think of antioxidant as an attribute or a behavior of certain micronutrients. They can be either Vitamins, Minerals or specialty ingredients such as herbs.
For example, Alpha Lipoic Acid, a very popular antioxidant and free radical scavenger. ALA is actually a Fatty Acid for example that exert antioxidant properties. Beta 1,3 Glucan for example, is a polysaccharides extracted from yeast walls that have been shown to boost immune system, though not an antioxidant itself, but several studies show it being promising in cancer treatment and lowering cholesterol.
These are examples. And yes, certain vitamins do have antioxidant properties such as vitamin C, E, A. Selenium is a trace element and exerts antioxidant properties, helping fight cancer. Other popular minerals is Zinc for example.
There is also another category of micronutrients called Adaptogens. Some adaptogens also exert antioxidant properties such as Rhodiola Rosea. Adaptogens helps increase body's resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue. They are usually herbal extracts, and in this case Rhodiola does have antioxidant properties. Milk Thistle for example, is an herb used to treat liver damage also has antioxidant properties.
Hope this helps. There are several great products that are purely consisting of antioxidants, free radical scavengers and adaptogens that I trust. Other products out there scam people by loading it with Vitamin C, E and other vitamins and calling it antioxidant and immune booster thus confusing the public.

Question: Why are taking vitamins and/or antioxidants good for you? Do these vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals really benefit you when it comes to your health, cancer, heart disease and premature death? I have little or no doubt that when you take these helpful pills, you actually are consuming what they say on the label, but does your body actually absorb it? Does your body get the BENEFIT when it's in pill/pharmacological form.
Answer: a multiple vitamin is good, but eat fruits and vegs. its not the same from pills.

Question: what would happen if i took 12 vitamins (antioxidants and immunsystem boosters) everyday for 3 weeks?
i was taking 12 vitamins everyday for 3 weeks and i was told that it was bad for my body. The vitamins i took were 3 olive leaf extracts pills, 3 green tea pills, and 6 immune system booster pills....all in one day.
Answer: You didn't specify what you have taken, but as long as you are not doubling up on any vitamins, particularly the fat soluble and liver stored vitamin A of the fat soluble group, you should be fine. Also, it is best to wean yourself down from such a full quota. One taking large amounts of vitamin C who stops suddenly can display some scurvy symptoms, this has been shown. So step-wise weaning down is always a good idea because our bodies seem to get used to what we take. Taking supplements irregularly might be one way to counteract this (body getting used to what is being supplemented).. though not sure.
Just don't double up on anything (individual component) you take...so check all labels.
Always consult your doctor first before taking supplements if you have a medical condition, and your doctor or pharmacist if you are on any prescribed medications before doing so.
Best wishes.

Question: (pill form) Vitamins and antioxidants may CAUSE disease? I've read about 6 articles recently that the data may turn on vitamins and antioxidants (other than what you get in a healthy diet) as CAUSING disease---they're seeing higher disease rates with supplementation. How would you feel about this? I have a feeling people will rebel against that concept because they've been so programmed to take pills. But from what I've been reading, just like with beta carotene, it backfires, Dr. Dean Edell is in agreement with this. NOW today I read one study showed excess antioxidants may shut down your own innate antioxidants and shorten your life. I am in the health food industry, and I believe in good foods not pills, but I just want to know, will most people go ballistic and "not believe" news such as this? Many scientists did not believe the negs about beta carotene at first either. Just curious!

Answer: Too much of anything is a bad thing, but a lot of those studies are bogus. Like the one they did with vitamin E where a lot of people died so they said that vitamin E wasn't helpful and even dangerous. The people in the study were all sick and some on their deathbeds to begin with. These articles take a lot of scrutiny to get to the truth.
Question: What is the difference between antioxidants and vitamins?
Answer: Vitamins are essential for life/metabolic processes. Your body does not make these molecules on it's own. That's why they are called "vita"mins, meaning they are VITAL for life.
Antioxidants can be vitamins and other nutrients that protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are formed as part of our natural metabolism but also by environmental factors, including smoking, pesticides, pollution and radiation. Free radicals are unstable molecules which react easily with essential molecules of our body, including DNA, fat and proteins.
When a free radical attacks a molecule, it will then become a free radical itself, causing a chain reaction which can result in the destruction of a cell. Antioxidants have the property to neutralize free radicals without becoming a free radicals themselves. When antioxidants neutralize free radicals by receiving or donating an electron they do not become antioxidants themselves because they are stable in both forms. In other words, antioxidants are chemicals that offer up their own electrons to the free radicals, thus preventing cellular damage.
Question: vitamins as antioxidant?
Answer: Vitamins that are antioxidants include:
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Beta Carotene (a form of Vitamin A).
A couple of antioxidants that are frequently mentioned but are not vitamins are Green tea and Selenium (a mineral).
A good way to ingest the necessary antioxidants is by both eating a sufficient amount of fresh fruits and vegetables that are loaded with many of the mentioned vitamin antioxidants and also take a multi vitamin supplement.

Question: What is the difference between an antioxidant and a vitamin? ? Are these the same thing, is the word anti oxidant completely and entirely different than a vitamin by definition or is it just a marketing ploy word.
Answer: They have different functions. For example, Vitamin B is good for your metabolism where as an antioxidant functions as a body cleanser.
