B-2

Question: What's the process of bringing a parent from the Phil. on a B-2 visa? I am a US citizen and planning to bring my 73 year old mother to come and visit my family here in US. B-2 visa is good enough since she has no plan of staying longer. Any tips please?

Answer: Petitioning for a parent takes about 18 months. They are not as strict as a visa for a fiancee or a spouse. Since your mom has no real intention of staying with you in the US, she has to tell the consul in her B2 interview that she wants to return to the Philippines after a visit with you. This is really a judgment call on the part of the consul. They may or may not grant the visa, but my bet is that they will. I hope your mom can articulate this very well. Hope you see your mom soon.
