Beta Carotene

Question: What effect does Alpha and Beta Carotene have on goldfish? I know beta carotene makes the goldfish deeper in color but does it have any other effects? And what does alpha carotene do to goldfish? Is alpha carotene beneficial or bad? Does it make goldfish's color deeper?

Answer: Alpha and beta carotene are precursors of Vitamin A and related micronutrients and are two of the "anitoxidents" we hear so much about, so they should be good for your fish's overall health. As you've heard, both of them are good for helping goldfish (and other kinds of fish) to develop red, orange, and yellow pigments. Carotenes are the substances that make beets red and carrots orange.
