Black Berries
Question: What are your fav recipes for black berries? I have several black berry bushes in my yard with lots of black berries. What are your fav recipes that use fresh black berries?
If anyone has anything that could use with chicken, that would be great. Also looking for a dessert type recipe.
But in general, just recipes that you love that use black berries.
Thanx
Answer: My blackberries are bursting on my bushes -
The easiest and tasty recipe is just this simple
4 cups of Blackberries (washed and shake off all the water you can)
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
6tbsps melted butter
Heat oven to 375. In an 8x8 greased pan fill bottom with berries and dizzle with lemon juice. In a bowl beat eggs, then cut in the sugar and flour. It will be a damp sandy consistency and kind of crumbly. Sporinkle over the fruit. Drizzle the top with the butter. Bake for 35 minutes or until it is lightly browned. I usually top it with vanilla ice cream, but whipped topping is yummy too.
Question: Are black berries illegal to grow in Australia? I am intrested in growing black berries but I read in this gardening book that they are prohibited to grow. Does this mean they are illegal to grow down in Australia?
I just don't want to get in trouble or anything.
Answer: The short answer is NO. The previous poster nailed it with the pdf file!
Legislation {in australia}
Blackberry is declared noxious in all states
and territories except the Northern
Territory. Landowners are required to
control it. Check with your local council
or state/territory government agency about
its requirements for blackberry control.
Keep it in check or it will kick the local plants booty. You can check out http://www.greenjointventures.info or a site like it to ask horticultural experts.

Answer: Black Mulberry Tree
Question: What is the big deal over these black berries and pearls? K never though of my self as technology behind or anything like that, but I have no ideas what is with these black berries and pearls, why are they so popular, what is so special about these phones ( I do know they are phones) but why r they in such a demand compared to other phones, I had the news in the background the other night and caught wind about these phones on the news didn't really catch everything, so what are these things and why are they highly regarded.
Answer: The Pearl is a model of a Blackberry. The Blackberry was originally geared towards business users - you can get your pop3 or corporate emails sent directly to your phone which is great for when you're traveling or away from your computer. You can even view and send attachments and send emails from the Blackberry.
The Pearl is actually aimed at individual users more so than business users. You can have your email come through to the Pearl, but it doesn't have as many business functions as the other Blackberry models.
I have the Pearl and I love it.

Question: what type of tree has black berries that smell like cloves? This tree grows on the boulevards in St Paul MN and drops all of it's black berries early in spring
it loses it's black seed berries early in the spring and they smell very strong. The tree on my block is already 30ft tall with a 18" diameter - so it isn't a dogwood
Answer: Additional information:
Sorry the dogwood was just a guess If you could get pictures and post them someone would know what the tree is...
But I have another guess...
Sources say that even after ripening, the clusters of dark berries will stay on the tree all winter.

Question: Why do black berries have BUGS in them!? How do I get rid of them! I'm referring to the fruit, not the phone. I bought black berries recently from the supermarket and after rinsing them and downing them in water, I noticed tiny little bugs ALL over them. These are REAL small, in fact I even ate a few before I noticed them. And they don't wash away! How do I get rid of them!? I don't think this is an isolated case either, these bugs live within these berries. I searched the internet but can't find anything relevant to this!
Answer: I have blackberries in my fridge, and they don't have bugs in them or on them....maybe you should try freezing them and then washing them again.
Question: what can i make with fresh figs or black berries? i went to the farmers market and got some really good black berries and figs.. and besides just eating them (which is fine with me lol) what should i do with them?
do you know any recipes that they would taste really good in? thanks
oh, and btw im vegan, but i can pretty much alter any omni recipe so that its vegan.
Answer: Vegans....tsk tsk. Ruin all the fun food combinations. Prosciutto wrapped figs stuffed with goat cheese or feta.
hmm you can do stuffed figs. core em out and do like...cinnamon apples and raisins diced and stuffed in em. Or i googled vegan fig recipes and got this.
NUTTY FIG BITES
20 dried figs
1 cup pecans or peanuts
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/3 cup peanut butter
finely chopped peanuts
In a food processor, place the figs, pecans, raisins, and cinnamon, and process for 1 minute to combine. Add the peanut butter and pulse a few times to combine. Using your hands, roll the mixture into 1-inch balls, and then roll the balls in the finely chopped peanuts. Store in an airtight container.
Im guessing if you replace the dried for fresh itd be even better.

Question: do you have to add yeast to black berries to ferment wine? i know grapes have natural yeast on them so you don't have to add any but i was wondering about black berries and possibly other fruits as well?
i made some wine from grapes i bought from the store and i just put sugar water and the mesh and let it ferment and a month later i had my wine i was just wondering if i could do the same with black berries? thanks for the info though ill be sure to experiment with it...
Answer: Even with grapes, you want to kill any wild yeast with metabisulfite tablets or powder and inoculate with a wine yeast like Montrachet. Another thing you will want to do is add a couple of drops of pectic enzyme, so what you get is more like wine than jam.

Question: I was eating black berries last night and there were seeds in it.....? Okay last night i was eating black berries and there where like Tons of seeds in there! There where like kinda big for a black berrie and i couldn't chew them or swallow them.I almost choked on one..lol Is it normal for black berries to have this many seeds that big? I couldn't eat them because there where like to many seeds to dig out for one little black berrie. Thanks for your help in advance!
So its okay to eat them?
Answer: Yep, that's normal. The seeds are pretty big. Not like watermelon seed sized but big enough to be annoying. I still love blackberries though. Try getting organic blackberries when they are in season. There will be less seeds and the seeds will be smaller. All the produce we buy at the supermarket has been genetically modified so it's bigger than if you just planted it yourself. Therefore, the seeds are bigger too.
Question: What is the name of a tree that has black berries in winter? it looks like a small bushy tree and is only about 12 feet in height grows slowly, and is in Missouri.
Answer: Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea x grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’®) is a stunning serviceberry cultivar, with beautiful berry production and gorgeous fall color that make it a great addition to any garden. The blue and red berries are edible. Hardy in zones 4-9 the serviceberry plant grows to 15-20’ maximum and can be grown as a single trunk small tree, or multi stemmed large bush depending on your pruning choices.
You can tell just from the name that the medium sized shrub ‘Profusion’ Beautyberry (Callicarpa bodnieri ‘Profusion’) is another plant with lovely late fall through winter berry displays. This AGM Award Winner beautyberry is known for its maroon spring foliage growth, its flaming fall colors, and the brilliant berries it produces. Growing anywhere from 4-10’ tall the beautyberry shrub keeps compact at 4’ wide making it an excellent choice for mixed borders, water accent plantings, or even smaller garden areas. Hardy zones 5-9 One of my personal favorites, this easy to grow beautyberry will have a place in my new borders this year.
Blue Muffin Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum ‘Christom Blue Muffin’) is a lovely viburnum that has truly blue berries beginning late fall, and gorgeous white blossoms in the spring. Perfect for a low hedge, or small shrub this viburnum grows 4-5’ tall and 3-4 wide and is hardy zones 3-9. While all viburnums have berries, this cultivar has one of the most beautiful blues I’ve ever seen. Many plants have a purple-blue or black-blue, but this viburnum produces a true blue colored berry that is very unique in the garden.
Darwin’s Barberry (Berberis darwinii) is another great addition to the garden with bluish berries. In the spring there are brilliant golden flowers carried on the arching branches of this 6’-10’shrub. Come fall the barberry plant produces sprays of blue berries that almost resemble loose clusters of grapes. An evergreen shrub that is easy to grow in a variety of soils, this plant makes an excellent loose hedge or mass planting along the back of a border. Originally from Chile, berberis darwinii differs from the deciduous Japanese barberry forms you usually see in garden centers. Hardy to Zone 6b and preferring part shade to full sun.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has small dark berries in the autumn on a small tree growing 20' tall. Edible berries have long been used as herbal supplements for medical benefits. It is deciduous with early summer flowers and autumn berries starting about August. Birds will leave the berries alone until after the first frosts which take away the bitter taste. Hardy through zone 5 it is a great way to mark the seasons. Some cultivars like ‘Purpurea’ have burgundy foliage growth in the spring, olive green in the summer and reddish foliage in the fall. ‘Black Beauty’ holds the purple color throughout and has fragrant flowers. The Elderberry is similar to many hollies in that it requires a pollinator so plant two for great berry production.
A great plant with darker berries for colder climates is the Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) which is hardy all the way in zones 3-8. Very easy to grow, chokeberry will tolerate wet and dry soil conditions, part shade through full sun (sun being preferred) and any type of soil composition once established. Aronia melanocarpa grows 3’-6’ tall and wide and is in the rose family. White blooms appear in late spring and the fruit is shiny black and will last until winter if the birds do not eat them first.
