Blue Berries
Question: what is the best way to grow blue berries? I bought Dad a vine of blue berries, What is the best way to grow them? As of right now it is just a steem with a few leaves on it.
Answer: blueberries love acidic soil
if possible grow near evergreens
if that is not possible, just mulch lightly with pine needles
the sun/shade factor does not really apply since they grow wild in most "if not all" states
Question: What times of year are blue berries in season? and can anyone grow them anywhere? When are blue berries in season and where do they grow well?
Answer: It all depends on your zone. Blueberries are picked in July in Michigan. They need an acid type soil. You may want want to do a soil test before planting.
Question: Do i need one or two blue berry bushes to get berries? Do I need to have two separate blue berry bushes to get berries? Do you need a male and female plant or will any other blue berry bush do so?
Answer: I think I read very recently that you need 3, each of a different variety to produce the most blooms and thus the most berries. I think that I read that this produces the best cross-pollination.
I know that Walmart is selling a package this year of 3 Blueberry plants, each a different variety.......
Blueberries are SO healthy for you, high in anti-oxidants...and SO tasty too. I eat them almost every day! Good Luck and I hope that you have a wonderful harvest!
I also read that they are shallow rooted and thus can grow well in containers~which was what I am wanting to do!
Question: What has red branches and blue berries? My sister just sent me a picture, this plant has bright red branches, and blue berries. She found it growing by a lake in colorado. What the heck is this?
I did google it. I couldnt find anything, which is why I asked here.
No, she just took a picture on her phone, sent it to me, and asked, do you know what this is?
It has no leaves, just these licorice-red branches and berries that looks just like blueberries.
Answer: This was really hard.
Without an actual picture to look at...here's what I
was able to come up with.
I started by checking on the poison sumac that was
given as a possible match by another answerer.
Along the way I also came across these other plants
that may or may not be your mystery bush.

Entered 'wild berry plants of Colorado' in my search engine.
Found three books at Amazon that may be of help.
You can check to see if your local library has a copy of
any of them.
One is titled :
"Best Tasting Wild Plants of Colorado"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1565792750/jackkellerswinem
Another titled :
"Common Edible and Medicinal Plants of Colorado,
with Recipe's and Prescriptions"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0940206013/jackkellerswinem
One more titled :
"Edible Native Plants of The Rocky Mountains"

Other than that,
perhaps there is a college/university near your sister that
has an agricultural department?
Someone on staff there might be able to properly identify
this for you gals.
And most likely, none of the plants I researched are even
close to what that plant REALLY is!
Oh well, it was interesting anyway.
Good Luck,
hope someone here can help you with what you seek.

Question: Do u know of any little dark blue berries that grow in NY? It comes from a shrub that grows in forests of NY. It has tiny blue berries with a leathery sort of shell. in also has small green leaves and the berries grow in groups. What is the name of the berry and what does it do?
Answer: It could be wild blueberries. I just went wild blueberry picking a few weeks ago. The plant looks like this:
http://www.blupete.com/Nature/Wildflowers/Blueberry.htm
Here is another picture of what they look like in bunches
http://www.wildblueberries.com/health_benefits.php
There is another type of berry that has white insides with little seeds. It grows along the forest floor on a sort of mossy plant that has leaves that are like pine needles. These berries aren't called blueberries, even if they are blue. They are loaded with antioxidants, but I am not sure of their name in English.
I will keep looking around for any other possibilities! But as a rule to go by, in the forest, berries that are blue are edible. Now in someone's backyard, the berries that are blue may not be!
THINGS TO DO WITH THEM: These berries are great for freezing! They maintain their nutrition even after being frozen! After frozen, you can snack on them as little sweet frozen snacks... They are also delicious as an ice cream topping, addition to cereal or pancakes, or made into pie. You can also juice them or blend them up with some sugar and have a delicious jam to put on sandwhiches. :) To hold onto the vitamins, minimize the amount of heat that they are exposed to. Bon Apetite!
Question: blue berries???????? wene do you plant blueberries?
Answer: Usually in Spring, but can also be planted late Fall, if watered well.
Question: When people say they have acai berries or they eat blue berries, what exactly does that mean? I have heard of the acai berry tablets and people mention blue berries and i was just wondering what they mean by that...
Answer: acai berries are an anti-oxidant source, just like blue berries are. Acai berries are all the rage right now and lots of impossible promises are made in order to sell them.
Question: what are bushes that look like they have blue berries on them? we have some bushes in the back yard. They are not edible blue berries but that's what they look like. Do they flower? or what are they
they are about 6 ft at this time, have long green leaves, in the spring they had tiny white clusters of flowers. I know they are not elderberry
Answer: All blue elderberries are edible-the red berried elderberry (sambucus racemosa) is poisonous; fragrant sarcococca-also known as sweet box or Christmas box has either red or blue depending on the variety; there is also Mahonia-sometimes called either California grape or Oregon grape; and Ampelopsis brevipedunculata-which is commonly called porcelain berry. If you have berries they already flowered. Knowing what the leaves look like would make ID'ing easier because there are many plants with blue berries such as serviceberries, etc.
Addendum: Maybe it's chokecherries. They are a shrub with long green leaves and small clusters of white flowers http://www.wildfoods.info/wildfoods/chokecherry.html You can actually make jam from them
Question: Where can you pick wild blue berries? We live in WY & want to go blue berry picking where can we go close by??
Answer: a blueberry ranch?
Question: when are blue berries in season in Australia? when does blue berry picking begin in Australia? (im in western australia?

Is it when they begin to look frizzled? I had frizzled grapes the other day and I started to feel funny. Has this happened to anyone before. how long should I have them for before I throw them out?
Answer: Well --- frizzled grapes are just a few steps away from raisins. so probably not going to hurt you.
If they have MOLD thats another story. thats not gonna taste good or make you feel good - plus you have to pick that fur outta your teeth.
Frizzled blueberries -- probably have lost all their taste, so why?
Question: when buying blue berries, how can i tell if the berries are ripe or not? is it better if they are hard or squishy? and is there a way they taste when they go bad? i dont havemuch experience with berries. thank you for your help! xoxo
Answer: Jerry is right, but you can also use your nose to tell whether fruit is ripened. Ripe fruit always smells good, so don't be afraid to use your nose. I hope this helps!
Question: What's the difference between Blue Berries and Huckleberries, for picking them in the wild? When do they ripen, berry and plant size, seeds, color?
Answer: Fifteen or 20 species of Blueberries are found in North America. Most kinds bear fruit in clusters. There are also about 40 species of Huckleberries, all native to North America, but in some parts of the United States the name "huckleberry" is improperly used for both blueberries and true huckleberries. Other people mistakenly believe that blueberries always have blue or bluish fruit, and that all huckleberries are black or purplish black. However, there are
dark-colored blueberries, and huckleberries that are distinctly blue, but there is a sure way to tell one from the other: blueberries have a large number of tiny soft seeds, whereas the huckleberries have 10 rather large, bony seeds.

Question: Why does Blue berries have the highest antioxidant among all of the other fruits please? I do eat fruit and veggies every day for lunch and dinner. I'm trying to eat healthy everyday but it is tough some times. What y'all think. I also don't smoke or drink beer. but I eat dark chocolate.
Answer: Blueberries continue to generate increased interest for their potential health giving properties. According to research currently underway at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, blueberries top the list of some 40 fruits, juices, and vegetable in their antioxidant activity. Concord grape juice is next on the list with about two thirds of the antioxidant activity of blueberries followed by strawberries, kale, and spinach.
Blueberries are just now being recognized for their high antioxidant activity due to sophisticated new techniques for studying the antioxidant properties of food. The NABC (North American Blueberry Council) is in contact with researchers at Tufts University and will continue to monitor the progress in this area.
Blueberries have long been prized as a great tasting and value added fruit. The fact that blueberries are low in calories, virtually fat free, a good source of fiber, and now found to be high in antioxidants makes the blueberry an even more attractive fruit to the consumer and industrial user both here at home and abroad
