Blueberry
Question: What is your favorite blueberry variety? I am going to buy some blueberry bushes sometime in the near future. I am wondering what type of blueberry variety is everyones favorite. My father has a blueberry bush that produces very good blueberrys, but he does not know what type it is. I am interested in a fairly sweet berry. Any suggestions?
Answer: Depends upon whether you want a high-bush or low-bush blueberry, Vaccinium. My favorite is the Top hat blueberry and it is a low bush...only gets 18-24 inches tall and it can really put out the blueberries. If you are interested in container blueberries the Top Hat is a real winner: http://www.naturehills.com/product/top_hat_blueberry.aspx.
For a high-bush plant that is very sweet and great producer try Duke, it produces a large sweet berry. http://www.naturehills.com/product/duke_blueberry.aspx
Question: Can you use blueberry muffin mix for a cake? Hello all, I am planning my daughter's 2nd b-day party and she loves blueberry muffins....I was just wondering if anyone knew whether you can use blueberry muffin mix to make a cake? If so, I would appreciate any suggestions....Thanks
Answer: The ingredients for many baked items are very similar. Blueberry muffins, blueberry scones, blueberry coffeecake, blueberry pancakes, etc. will all have flour, baking powder and/or baking soda, sugar, salt, and a combination of different liquids such as oil, milk, cream, sour cream, buttermilk, etc. It's the amount of each of these ingredients that determines the texture, denseness and mouth-feel of the baked product.
So to answer your question, yes, you can probably use a blueberry muffin mix to make a cake, however, you will need to find a recipe for some kind of a blueberry cake to see what might be missing from the muffin mix that would be needed to make it into a cake mix.
The only other suggestion I have is to maybe find a blueberry pound cake box mix, and make cupcakes out of it. I'm sure your daughter would love this just as much. Happy birthday to the little one!
Question: Who knows the difference between blueberry jam and blueberry conserve? I bought a blueberry conserve, thought I can make some blueberry doughnuts.
Thank you both very much, now I got the answer.
Yes, indeed blueberry conserve tastes much richer than blueberry jam.
Thank you guys!
Answer: Jams are made from crushed or ground, whole fruit and usually have a thick consistency due to high pectin content.
Conserves are jams made from a mixture of fruits. They usually contain citrus fruit, nuts, and raisins.

Question: What are these things on my blueberry bush? I've got a large, healthy blueberry bush until now it seems. I've got these gray things here and there on the bush. They look like seed pods or something.....sort of like an overgrown kidney bean but gray. Some of them have little holes in them. I can't tell if they are surrounding a blueberry or not. I first noticed them last year but there were only a few and I ignored. This year there are substantially more. I'm concerned but I can't seem to find a match to what these things are when I search around the internet. Any thoughts?
Answer: dingleberries ????
Question: How to protect blueberry trees from birds? We just bought a house... and found out that we have 3 blueberry trees in the back yard. Do we have to put netting all around the trees or just draped over all three to protect them frim birds?
Answer: Birds, especially catbirds and robins, LOVE blueberries, and are very skilled at getting into anything you try to keep them out. The best thing is a rigid wire cage that encloses the bushes. Next best is netting over the bushes, though they will fight their way in. If you have kids, they can sit near the bushes and squirt the birds with a garden hose when they land on the bushes. Kids enjoy this and the birds soon learn it is uncomfortable.
If you don't have many trees around you may find you don't have too much of a problem. I find that if the birds have enough water, they are not too interested in the blueberries until the weather gets really hot in mid-July. By then I usually have plenty of blueberries.

Question: Do you have to pollinate blueberry bush with another blueberry bush? Or can you plant a raspberry bush in place of a 2nd blueberry bush. I'm growing my first blueberry bush and just realized that I need a 2nd bush to pollinate. Just curious if is HAS to be a blueberry or can be another "similar" berry.
Answer: You had to have at least two blueberry bushes within three feet to have them pollinate. I have a ton of raspberries and they did not help cross pollinate. I eventually had to move my blue berries closer together to get fruit.
Question: Where can I purchase active Blueberry Bushes in Evansville Indiana? I live in Southern Indiana (Evansville area) and I am trying to find active (not dormant) blueberry bushes to purchase. Does anyone know where I might purchase some? I purchased one at Rural King but it was the last one and I need at least one more for cross pollination. Your help is appreciated!
Answer: Have you tried Gelhausen On Green River? Also maybe even Peckenpaughs (I am a west-saider) Other than that I say try the Rural King on St. Joe if you haven't already, and if you went to that one then try the Morgan avenue one. Hope this helped!
Question: How would you get a blueberry stain out of a peice of fabric? Hi im taking facs (sewing and cooking) at school and what is the best way to get blueberry out of a small peice of fabric?
Answer: wow.. Blueberry stains are bad. As long as you haven't sent it through the dryer, it could still be salvageable. What kind of fabric is it? If it's cotton or a modified cellulose derivative of cotton such as rayon, polyester, satin, or certain types of velvet, try one of these things:
Soak it in a sink with luke-warm water for 20 minutes. Apply a little dish soap to the area & rub together with your hands. If that doesn't work, ring out the fabric, apply a little baking soda & gently scrub with an old toothbrush. If you want to skip the home-remedies, Shout Stain Stick works exceptionally well! I've used oxy-clean before & wasn't impressed with it.
Oh, and wear an apron next time ;)
