Answer: The best thing to do is avoid sugar, caffeine and milk while studying- but do drink your milk when you have dinner!! If to want eat something while you study get finger foods like grapes, carrot or celery sticks and occasionally some nuts- only drink water when you are studying (and whenever else you feel like it). Crunchy, salty foods can create a distraction (like music- your brain will associate the music with what you are learning and you will have difficulty recalling it later.) As for foods you should be eating between study periods, try fish. Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish and many nuts are essential for brain development.
Question: what brain food is good for working on a complex project in engineering ? i am writing my thesis and i need some type of food which helps me stay focused and stimulates my brain to work better
what should i eat ?
Answer: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish are still the most recommeded brain food - stay away from sugar and caffeine! It will scatter your focus - try the NewScientist.com website - good luck -
Question: Is there such thing as brain food? It is supposed that foods like bananas are "brain food." Why is this. Also, what other foods can be considered brain food?
Answer: Brain foods
Some regular food items are rich sources of substances with alleged nootropic benefits:
* Nuts, in particular walnuts, are rich sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid. A mixture of walnuts served with dried fruit pieces is known in some regions as student food (orig. German: Studentenfutter) and is there popularily recommended as a snack for students and other mental workers.
* Oily fish, such as salmon or fresh tuna (not tuna canned in oil) are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), whose lack in diet has been associated with increased risk of mental illnesses such as depression, aggressive behavior, schizophrenia, or hyper-activity in children.
Question: I need good, sound nutrition advice-I want to know which foods/drinks are classed as "brain food"? I already know about fish, but what other foods are "brain food"?
Answer: anything high in omega 3 oils. (you already mentioned fish)
i think that avocado and almonds are also considered brain foods but you can get supplements from health food shops witht this in also!
Question: How does Brain food help your brain? I am doing a topic in debating and it is about "Brain Food" How does it really help your brain?
Answer: I think this is just what you need
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/nutr.html
This is how it starts:
Your brain is like a car. A car needs gasoline, oil, brake fluid and other materials to run properly. Your brain also needs special materials to run properly: glucose, vitamins, minerals and other essential chemicals.
For example, the fuel (energy) for your brain is glucose. You can get glucose by eating carbohydrates or other foods that can be converted to glucose.
Your brain must manufacture the right proteins and fats to do things such as grow new connections or add myelin, the fatty sheath to axons.
You do this by digesting proteins and fats in food and using the pieces, that is, the amino acids and fatty acids, to make the new brain proteins and fats.
Without the correct amount and balance of particular building blocks, your brain will not work properly. Too little (deficiency) or too much (overabundance) of the necessary nutrient can affect the nervous system.
Question: are blueberries and olive oil good brain food? why?
is good brain food also good for spiritual welfare, or does the brain just degrade from poisons and toxins in the air no matter what you eat?
Answer: Blueberries are super high in antioxidants. Olive oil...also ok for you. I do not know if these are both good 'brain' food specifically. I'd be skeptical if they were touted as such.
They are good for you in general. So that alone merits their benefit to your health.
Don't be duped by advertising that THIS or THAT is good/bad for this organ or that organ.
Eat healthy food, and that's all you need. It's MUCH simpler than people (wanting money) make it out to be.
Question: What's the best brain food for concentration? Got a big exam coming up at work. Not had an exam for years. I'm doing a training course at the moment and studying is going well. It's vital i pass and i know food can play a big part in studying.
I exercise and take frequent breaks so i'm doing the right thing there. But what food is good for concentration and for 'brain power' so to speak.
Answer: although not a food, peppermint oil. it's suggested to smell it to make you more mentally alert, especially before an exam.
Question: What are some food brain accelerating techniques? I have revised for this ICT test, but when i revised for a science test I did terrible, so im totally paraniod!
Any advice on brain foods, techniques to revise better or be full on during the test?
Thanks in advance.
(year 9 pupil)
Answer: put blueberries in your ears during revision and the goodness gets to your brain quicker than eating them
Question: Why has eating Fish always been considered as a "Brain Food"? If it's just the protein, why not say steak is brain food too?
Or is it because fish accumulate certain heavy elements within their body, that our brain structure needs for development?
(Many are now artificially contaminated with high levels of mercury due to industrialisation and mining - what would be their 'natural' atomic concentrations of heavy metals?)
Ok I see. Omega 3's.
Thanks.
If anyone does know the action of heavy rare earth elements on the brain it would still be an interesting study, as they are known to be in there.
Answer: Brain function requires certain essential fatty acids.
The two that fish (oily) can give us is EPA and DHA. These are two forms of the omega-3 fatty acids that you hear lots of hype about.
Some studies claim to increase intelligence when supplements containing these fatty acids are taken over time.
Omega 3 fatty acid is found in fish, but also in other foods such as flaxseeds, nuts etc. BUT the EPA and DHA forms are only found in fish
Question: What's some good brain food, or tablets that aren't placebos? For studying, reading or writing? I prefer foods, but pills work. Though, I've seen some popular ones that "support increased brain functioning" or "promote focus" and things like that. If you have a pill, it should be a good one.
Answer: No, there is no such thing. No supplements, vitamins, herbs (not even Ginko Biloba), drugs, foods, drinks....nothing that supports increased brain function or focus.
Anything that claims it will is a scam. Just a waste of money. If you want to be as sharp as you can be, then you need to eat right, exercise every day and get enough sleep. Not doing those things (eating junk/fast food, no exercise and not enough sleep) will make you tired, run down, sluggish and you won't be able to concentrate.
Question: why is fish known as brain food? why is fish known as brain food but have short term memory loss?
Answer: Protein
Protein is found in meat, fish, milk and cheese. Protein provides the building blocks for most of the body's tissues, nerves, internal organs (including brain and heart). Proteins are used to make neurotransmitters and are essential to improve mental performance.
Carbohydrate
Grains, fruits and vegetables are key sources of carbohydrates. Digestion causes the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) which is the brains primary source of energy. If your glucose levels fluctuate too much, you may experience mental confusion, dizziness and if severe, convulsions and loss of consciousness.
Fat
The brain is more than 60% fat. This is because the brain cells are covered by the myelin sheath which is composed of approximately 75% fat. Fats also play a crucial role as messengers. They regulate key aspects of the immune system, blood circulation, inflammation, memory and mood.
Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the optimum performance of your brain. Lack of omega-3 fats in your diet can lead to depression, poor memory, low IQ, learning disabilities, dyslexia, ADD and many more mental disorders.
To ensure that your diet is rich in omega-3 fats, ensure that you eat plenty of oily fish like salmon, sardines, trout, tuna, herring, mackerel and anchovies.
Question: Brain food? early light but high energy lunch for tomorrow before exam? my exam is at 1.30 so need to eat early lunch at 12
any ideas for sandwich fillings that are vegetarian and brain food?
or just brain food thats veggie in general

Answer: Foods with the best brain sugars include the following:
Fruits: grapefruit, apples, cherries, oranges, and grapes have a low glycemic index. Fruits have a lower G.I. than fruit juices, because the fiber in the fruit slows the absorption of the fruit sugar. A whole apple will be more brain-friendly than apple juice; a whole orange better than orange juice. Freshly-made juice containing a lot of pulp is more brain-friendly than filtered juice.
Cereals and grains: oatmeal and bran have the lowest G.I. Other foods with a favorable G.I. are spaghetti and rice. Corn flakes and sugar-coated cereals have higher G.I.s.
Vegetables and legumes: Legumes, such as soybeans, kidney beans, chick peas, and lentils have the lowest glycemic index of any food. Potatoes and carrots have a much higher G.I.
