Brain Health
Question: What's a good resource for keeping up one's overall brain/mental health? I am a student in an occupation that requires that my brain be working in tip-top condition for a looonnnggg time. Does anyone know of a resource where I can find good information on brain health food, brain exercises, etc.???
Answer: Omega-3 fatty acids are supposedly good for the brain- found in nuts and fish. Brain exercises could include: crossword puzzles, sudoku, chess, logic puzzles, riddles, or math problems.
Question: What is brain health and brain fitness? What is brain health and brain fitness? What skills and techniques we require to keep our brain healthy?
Answer: First, let's review some of the functions of the brain:
• The brain enables human beings to think and sends messages to other body parts to help them work properly.
• The brain gets signals from all parts of the body telling it what is happening in each part. The brain also sends signals to parts of the body to influence what they do.
• Interactions among the senses, nerves, and brain make possible the learning that enables human beings to predict, analyze, and respond to changes in their environments.
Like other parts of your body, your brain may lose some agility as you get older. It can deteriorate even more if you don’t take care of it. Science is unlocking many of the mysteries of the brain, but we don’t have all the answers yet. You can do everything “right” and still not prevent Alzheimer’s disease. What’s offered here is the best and most up-to-date information available so that you can make your own decisions about your health.
→Stay physically active
→Adopt a brain healthy diet
→Remain socially active

One type of brain disorder is Alzheimer's:

The term brain fitness reflects a hypothesis that cognitive abilities can be maintained or improved by exercising the brain, in analogy to the way physical fitness is improved by exercising the body. Although there is strong evidence that aspects of brain structure remain plastic throughout life, and that high levels of mental activity are associated with reduced risks of age-related dementia, scientific support for the concept of "brain fitness" is limited.

Question: Are amino acids necessary for good brain health? I know that the brain produces some of theese amion acids , but where do we get the others from. Should we all be taking supplements for the non present amino aciss?
Answer: I wouldn't think so if you are eating healthy, like getting enough fruits, vegetables and meat (if you are not vegetarian.) All cells produce amino acids when necessary; they get the nutrients they need from the food you eat. So, I'm assuming amino acids are necessary for good brain health. Just make sure you eat right, and it should be okay. Your body will produce them naturally.

Question: How healthy is it really for brain and health to give plasma? why so for this?
how does one feel after?
what if they do this every 10 days?
what does it deplete body of?
how to replace it?
please exlain
thansk for your answers!
Answer: Plasma is the liquid the red blood cells "float" in. You can often see it in some small scratches or cuts for it is a yellowish liquid that dried hard, semi clear and then browns to make a scab. Sometimes red blood cells are in it as well causing the browning even faster.
When you give plasma, you also give a lot of blood, however, the plasma place spins the bags of blood separating the plasma from the red blood cells. They "drain" off the yellowish liquid, leaving all the red blood cells behind and then put the red cells back into your body via the same needle and hook up used to extract the blood/plasma in the first place. You remain seated and hooked up the the needle, tubes and related equipment because of this.
Usually they require at last 2 weeks (14 days) between visits and they DO keep records. However, if a place allows 10 days, go for it.
The body makes new plasma as needed, this is why the wait of at least 2 weeks.
A very few number of people have felt light headed or faint feeling after giving. They often have you set there for a lil while longer and may offer cookies and juice.
The health risks in giving plasma are almost nothing. The blood is checked and re-checked to your ID before being put back in you. Some places also do a blood check on YOU to make sure you have nothing that can be passed on as well.
It is a noble thing to do. It is not hard nor really painful, but it can be slightly uncomfortable getting the needle stuck in your arm 2 times a month. I did it for a long time and am thinking of doing it again. Check in your area at the plasma centers for some can pay rather well for your services and your plasma.

I don't freak out the way I use to. My memory is getting better. And I am amazed everyday by my analytical skills. The main reason I joined Yahoo! Answers is because I can now answer questions quickly and thoughtfully at the same time and I needed to release my new found skill somewhere.

Question: Is using Vicks under my nose, 4 times a night for 5+ years, bad for my brain/health? My boyfriend said that last night I applied Vicks Vapor Rub 7 times underneath my nose.. he actually counted but normally it's just 4. I don't have a cold, I don't really know why I use it.. I guess it just helps me sleep.
Answer: Are you getting up in the night to reapply it? How are you putting it on 4 times? It sounds like you are either addicted to the vapor rub (if that is possible) or have formed a habit or compulsion to put the stuff on. You should try to ween yourself off the stuff. I don't know if it will cause brain issues, but it can't be good. Especially since you aren't even sick/don't even need it.
