Brown Bag Lunch
Question: Is it 'cool' to have a brown bag lunch at school and uncool to have a lunch box? Hello. My name is Mary. I am a mom and my 12 year old son 7th grader just asked for a brown bag lunch. I am wondering is it 'cool' to have a brown bag lunch at school and uncool to have a lunch box?
If your son or daughter uses a brown bag at school, please tell me below and post a picture of their brown bag lunch. Thank you.
Answer: Nahhh, I'm 13, 8th grade, and I have a Hello Kitty lunch box. I'm hot shiiiiiit. (:
Ahaa, but for guys, brown bag or just the plain ones are the coolest. All the cool guys at my school buy lunch, but that's just nasty.
Question: Daughter Asked for Brown Bag Lunch for School? My daughter (age 13) asked for me to pack her a brown bag lunch for school. I'm not sure why. Is that like the cool thing to do nowadays? Can someone send me a picture of their brown bag lunches in response. Thanks.
Answer: If her school lunch does not taste that good then I could see her wanting to bring a lunch from home. I started bringing a lunch from home in the 6th grade when the cafeteria budget was slashed. I think it is healthier anyways.
Question: What are some good brown bag lunch ideas? I like to make my lunch at work or bring it in but am getting bored of salad with tuna etc.. Does anyone have any good lunch ideas that will fill me up and doesn't take hours of preparation. I don't eat bread either.
Answer: Here's a yummy chicken salad; I like to serve it in a pita bread, but it's good as a dip for baby carrot halves (slice the carrots in half lengthwise so there's a flat surface for holding the dip):
1 can chicken, drained well
2 tablespoons light mayo or nonfat plain yogurt
1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber
tobasco sauce, to taste
freshly ground black pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients well. Keep refrigerated until ready to eat.
Question: What are some good brown-bag lunch items? I'm starting school in a few weeks and I would like some lunch ideas. Balanced protein and carbs along with low sodium are lost important to me. I'll check out the labels to whatever is suggested, but please try to suggest that sort most.
Oh, and I don't eat pork, beef or chicken. I'll eat fish if need be, however.
Answer: Well, you pretty much narrowed out Lunch meat. Can I assume that you don't have access to a refrig. if you did you could take things like cottage cheese, yogurt.
An avocado, (of course you have to have a knife to peel the skins off) a piece of fruit, or a cup of applesauce. Some Wheat Thin crackers and Jello. Water, is very important.
School Lunches can be a real drag. You got lots of suggestions already; try one or two according to what is on sale at the grocery. Then select three, just don't eat the same thing every day.
Best of Luck to you this year in school.

Question: Any ideas for vegetarian brown bag lunch? Actually a reuseable lunch bag...:-)
(No veggies and dip thank you.)
Something kids would like that isn't too "lame" and an adult can appreciate.
(Am I asking too much??)
Don't know where to look online for ideas... links would be nice if you know of any.
Thanks for letting me pick your brain!
Answer: A soup Thermos can be a blessing for the variety brown bagging Vegan/Vegetarian. There's no limit to the variety of soups you can make.
Add a side of a cold grilled Cheese Sandwich, and even your kids will love you for it...
Question: What's the tastiest and easiest way to add more vegetables to a brown-bag lunch? I'd like to add more vegetables to my diet, but I can't figure out a better way to do it when I take a lunch to work than just some carrot sticks. What's an easy, healthy and delicious way to get a good serving or two of vegetables at work?
Answer: The easiest way I know of is to make a big batch of something over the weekend. You can make some vegetable-packed soup, Saag Pannier (an Indian dish consisting of spinach tomatoes, cheese and spices) and pack a serving worth in your lunch each day.
Steaming is another simple thing to do. If you have a microwave at work, you can microwave them with a little bit of water. or you can do it in the morning while you are brushing your teeth... melt some cheese on some steamed broccoli, and YUM.
If you are good about putting vegetables in you dinner, make extra dinner and pack the leftovers. If you don't have a microwave, you can buy thermoses that keep food warm for up to 6 hours in most stores.
Question: Can you pack a sandwich with deli meat in a brown bag lunch? I want to pack my lunch for school, but is it safe to pack a sandwich with deli meats in it with no type of cooler and the only source of refrigeration being the other cool items? I don't want to pack something that will make me sick at school.
Answer: go ahead and pack the lunch just don't leave it out for to long most over the counter mayo acts as a preservative. Pack it the night before along with the other items keep it in the refrigerator. before you leave place it in your back pack it will help keep it cool. try to eat it with in 4 hours 5 if it is still cold. If it is warm and it has been longer then 4 hours it could be a risk. I take a lunch with me some times and don't have any problems. It may be a good idea to get a jell bag that you can freeze and put in your lunch. then you can keep it longer. hope this helps
My source is me I am an exutive chef I went to two collages and cooking school, and I pack a lunch when I go out for off site long meetings
Question: Can you freeze lunch meat and mayo sandwiches for brown bag lunches? I want to get my boys to get their own lunches in the morning but the sandwiches always cause them trouble and make such a mess. I just thought if I could make them all on Sunday they could just grab one out of the freezer and be good to go.
Answer: Call around restaurant supply stores to see if they have mayo in those little packets that are like the ketchup packets. Just throw one or two in the bag and they're set. You can also buy them by the case online. I would recommend Hellman's.
Question: What are some Adult brown bag lunch ideas? My husband and I are trying to cut back on spending so I am now packing his lunches. I feel awful, everyday its either left overs or a ham sandwich, I need some good ideas that are not to time consuming to make!
Answer: The possibilities are endless.
There is nothing wrong with left overs and or cold cuts.
What I do is this: On the weekend, I'll get 1/4 lb of assorted cold cuts. For example:
1/4 lb salami
1/4 lb provolone plus 1/4 lb of another cheese
1/4 lb ham
1/4 lb chicken or turkey breast
I also purchase 6 onion rolls in a bag and the tortillas wraps that are 8''.
Other weeks I''ll get whole wheat bread / rye bread or other bread, and sometimes, I'll purchase an Italian or French long baquette.
I always try to so something different week to week on the bread and if certain breads are on sale, I buy them, take them home, wrap them in foil & freeze them.
BTW - a good secret is to alwyas have those small salt & pepper packets you get from fast food places. :-)
Here is a few ideas.
#1 - Tripple decker:
Toast 3 pieces of bread and put his favorite mayo/mustard on it.
One of the layers will have some cold cut & cheese and the second layer will have lettuce & tomato or cuccumber... what ever he likes.
Add a hard boiled egg along with the salt & pepper packets.
1 small bag of chips and 1 or 2 cookies.
#2 Tortilla wrap
Put this favorite mayo/mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced thin onions, and roll it up.
Cut it in half.
In a small container some home made potato or mac salad... you can make this on the weekend so it's ready for the week day lunches.
A brownie or a few cookies.
#3 Italian hogie
Cut an Italian or French baquette in half & toast it.
Place his favorite cold cuts & cheeses, with shreaded lettuce & tomato and if he likes peppers, add a few slices of peppers on top
A pinch of oregano & pepper
Then gently sprinkle some Italian dressing on it and that's it.
If he likes fruit, make him a small fruit salad but use fruits that will not turn brown, such as strawberrys, blue berrys, UNPEELED banana, melon, honeydew, watermelon.... etc..
#4 - Nothing states that you cannot have breakfast for "lunch".
3 scrambled eggs with grilled ham, buttered toast and home fries. The grilled ham & home fries can be prepared on Sunday. Make sure you add the salt & pepper packets as well as ketchup.
Add an apple or some other fresh fruit such as melon.
# 5 - Grilled ham & cheese with a small Glad container of soup
Some cookies or brownies and some fresh fruit.
# 6 -
In a Glad or plastic container. Give him a few pieces of toasted bread or roll with butter. Add to the lunch container some cold cuts, cheese, tomato wedges, pickelts, some olives & 2 hard boiled eggs.
Again, some cookies & fresh fruit.
I can think of more, but I'm tired of typing....
Question: Can i get some brown bag lunch ideas for work? Im tired of taking the same thing every day. The most original idea will have the best shot at best answer.
Answer: Take cut up pieces of fruit such as watermelon, cantelope and musk melon and maybe pineapple. It is fun to snack on too. Have fun with your sandwiches....one day egg salad sandwich (which sounds real good right now), ham with all the fixing the next day, tuna after that.
You can even prepare a salad with all the trimmings the night before. A great container for salad dressing is a baby food jar or the plastic baby food jar. Just buy one and empty it. It will only cost you about 40 cents. Wash it out and put your dressing in it. The plastic ones work better but they cost about a dollar but they have a nice close lid with them.
Question: What is your favorite healthy brown bag lunch? I'm really bored with making the same things over and over again.
Answer: turkey sandwich on pumpernickel bread with spicy mustard, lettuce, and sliced red onion. dill pickles on the side. 1 small apple. water to drink.
Question: What's easy and healthy to pack in a brown bag for lunch? I want to start brown bagging everyday but get tired of sandwiches after a few weeks. I need ideas to help me create easy and healthy lunch menus that appeal to adults. I don't have a lot of time to be in the kitchen cooking either. I need creative ideas.
I want ideas for ADULT lunches.
Answer: cereals, granolas, fruits, nuts, lunch meat rolled with sliced cheese, whole grain tortillas, instant oatmeal packages, raw vegetables and a plastic container of ranch dip and plenty of ice cold bottled water.
Question: How can I "brown bag" a lunch in a professional office? To save money, I'd like to pack a lunch and bring snacks with me to my job. Years ago, I would just throw food into a plastic grocery bag. I have a higher level position now, and don't want to bring anything tacky. The brown paper "lunch" bags are not large enough. How does everyone else bring their lunches? Is there a streamlined, insulated bag that is plain and professional looking?
Answer: I've seen a lot of women put lunch, drinks, snacks, etc in gift bags and take it to work.
Question: Brown bag lunch ideas for work? So far, ive done bolongna and cheese and peanut butter and jelly.
I meant, any ideas on what i can add during thhe week besides those two sandwiches?

Question: What is a yummy brown bag lunch for my child? My child is very picky, and I really want them to eat... any suggestions?
Answer: Japanese children eat lunch from what they call a "bento box". It is a compartmentalized box with little bits of food in each section. This is good for children because they don't get overwhelmed by a big sandwich, and also it gives them variety. You can find bento boxes in Asian specialty stores or online (see link below). To fill them, American style, you can put in:
Cut fruit or dried fruit
Small pretzel twists or crackers
Cut raw veggies
Dip
Nuts
Cereal
1/4 sandwiches
Cheese, marinated tofu, or meat cubes
As the mother of 5, I can tell you that if you include a good variety each day, including some favorites, you child will begin to look forward to lunch time and the other kids will admire his/her stash. Mine were always especially eager to have dips like different kinds of hummus (non-dairy) or refried beans with things to dip into it.
