Brown Bag Lunches
Question: what are foods not to put in brown bag lunches for school? I am packing my lunch in one of those brown paper bags. I was just wondering things i shouldnt put in my llunch to avoid them smelling up the classroom.
Answer: I agree with the others, avoid tuna, egg, salami, onion, hot foods and things that spoil. I would also avoid things that would effect the bag such as juicy tomatoes.
Sandwiches are good but be careful of your filling, it might fall apart during your travels. I've been taking crackers and a tin of tuna to put on top for my lunch.
Question: What are some good ideas for brown bag lunches that you don't necessarily have to keep cold? It's almost time for back to school, and I am sick of the old peanut butter sandwich and bag of chips. I am trying to be more healthy this year. So I'm looking for some good ideas! help me please?
But I use a brown bag, so I want things that won't spoil by lunchtime if I don't have something to chill them.
Answer: You should consider thing like fresh fruit like apples, pears, and oranges. You can even have something like a WalDorf salad precut and ready to mix if you can find the little Mayonese packs just be sure to toss your fruit with a little lemmon juice to help prevent it from browning. Though you should consider one of those new cooler lunch boxes to expand your options. With a little ice pack they can keep your food at safe temps for about 6 hours
Question: What are some good brown bag lunches? My boyfriend has long work days and hes getting tried of the sandwich lunches (it gets super hot so his sandwiches get soggy & the cheese melts). So does anyone have good ideas for things I can pack him? Keep in mind, he has no access to a refrig. & he prefers not to heat anything. His typical lunch is a sandwich, chips, & protein bars. So is there anything else besides a sandwich that I can pack him?
Answer: Probably the best thing you could buy is a little cooler that he can take to work with him. That way all of his lunch and drinks would stay cold. You could pack a pasta or potato salad or a fresh salad and have the dressing in a little bottle so it doesn't go soggy. Cold cooked sausages with ketchup. Maybe some fruit. There's not a lot you can make for him if he has no way to keep things cool.
Question: Any ideas for brown bag lunches? I have to take my lunch to work because there aren't any good resturants near by. Anyone have any ideas about what I could pack besides a pb&j or ham sandwhich. Thanks!!
Answer: Brown Bag Tips
If you have to make a lot of sandwiches, try the assembly line method: Lay out slices of bread, spread each slice with butter, mustard, mayo or any other spread you are using. Go down the line and add toppings, finish with top slice of bread, then wrap.
For easier spreading, freeze breads first, then make your sandwiches. This can also help keep foods chilled and it will be thawed in time for lunch.
Use frozen ice packs to help keep cold foods cold. Freezing drinks like juices and iced teas can also help keep foods cold, and who doesn't prefer a cold drink (keep in mind that the containers are likely to sweat while thawing, so wrap you food well so it doesn't get soggy).
For a nutritious and low calorie lunch, pack some raw, or lightly steamed (then chilled) vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower or carrots. Add a small container of dip (or individual package of salad dressing) and you've got a great snack or lunch addition.
Hummus, whether used as a dip or a sandwich spread is a great addition to any lunchbox.
Don't forget stuffed tomatoes! Stuff with tuna or egg salad or even potato, pasta or rice salad.
A thermos can keep things hot as well as cold, which opens up a host of lunchtime possibilities. How about soups, or pastas or even stir-frys? A wide mouthed thermos container can be the brown bagger's best friend. Just fill with piping hot food and seal. It will stay hot until lunchtime.
Tired of the same old sandwich? How about cold pizza for lunch? Don't forget salads instead of sandwiches (perfect for those cutting carbs).
What's exotic for us in normal fare in Japan. Sushi Rolls make terrific lunchbox fare.
Frittatas are great served cold and are perfect for packing in a lunchbox.
Savory tarts, pies and quiches can often be served at room temperature and add an elegant touch to any box lunch.
If you and your co-workers bring your lunches to work, why not start a Brown Bag Club? Divide the week up between 5 co-workers, each day a different person brings brown bag lunches for the group!

Question: I would like to bring healthy, brown bag lunches to work. Any suggestions?
Answer: My favorite bagged lunches:
Veggies and hummus (carrots, celery, cucumber)
Chicken, broccoli and rice w/ lemon pepper spice or lemon juice. (Stay away from stuff like alfredo sauce - too fattening, too much sodium)
Smoked turkey on wheat bread w/ lettuch and slice of tomato and an apple or grapes
Adding fresh fruits and veggies to anything can make it healthy. Even canned stuff is okay - just be careful of the fruits. If it's a fruit in it's own juice it's okay, but if it's in syrup that's not good for you!
Question: Low calorie brown bag lunches for a vegetarian? I'm a vegetarian and I need some low calorie meals that I can take to school to eat. I prefer something that I can carry in a brown bag. however, I'm willing to spend some extra money for an insulated bag and/or a thermos. I do not have access to a microwave so please, give me some ideas that I can eat cold or that can fit into a thermos and stay warm in one for up to 5-6 hours.
I used to bring a pb+j to lunch everyday (along with a few side items) but then I found out that my pb+j has about 700 calories and that isn't going to help me reach my goal weight. I'm trying not to eat more than 1200-1400 calories a day.
I'm kind of a picky eater. Sorry, I didn't mention this before, but I am not a fan of mayo, mustard, any canned veggies, spinach (cooked), cauliflower, broccoli (unless covered in dressing, which I doubt is healthy, or hummus.
Maybe it would be easier to name some veggies that I like. I like:
carrots (raw or cooked), green beans, peas, corn, spinach (raw), beans (all except black), and ALL FRUITS!
Answer: A helpful strategy for weight loss without hunger (not to mention digestive health) is to eat foods that contain a lot of fiber and liquid since they are filling, nutritious, and slow to digest.
I'd try to plan meals around vegetable & bean stews, grains, and soups, which are especially nice at this time of year. Thank goodness the Thermos is an option for you - it's a great fit for these kinds of meals.
Some ideas:
- Cook up batches of healthy grains like hulled barley, wheat berries, or brown rice in a rice cooker or pot on the stove.
- Cook up dishes like vegetarian chili, tomato bean soups, vegetarian jambalaya, lentil soup, borscht, and other similar dishes.
- Warm up one serving of the grain and the stew, and layer/combine them in the Thermos in the morning. Portion it out so you always have one serving of the grain, a serving of beans (for protein and fiber), veggies, and enough sauce/liquid to give it all flavor.
- Always pack a fruit or yogurt for dessert.
- For variety, try to incorporate soy products like tempeh, TVP, and tofu as the protein source.
Good luck!
Question: healthy brown bag lunches for VEGANS? just went vegan after being a vegetarian for 1 year and a half and i need some ideas
Answer: 1) Cold pasta salads. I am a huge fan of the funky pasta shapes (and I'm not sure why). You could boil some noodles (rinse, drain and run cold water on them) and drizzle some Italian dressing on top. You can also cut up your fave veggies (broccoli, onions, green and red bell peppers, carrots, etc.) and toss. Simple and filling!
2) Veggie sandwich or wrap. I like using hummus as my "mayo". I layer on marinated artichoke hearts, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, alfalfa sprouts and sometimes red onions.
3) Sushi. Making it at home is not that difficult. The tools/utensils are cheap and it's fun to roll them and try making the rolls. I use cucumbers, carrots, avocados and mushrooms for mine. Slice and keep cool. Carry some wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce. Yum!
4) Veggie soup. In the winter, this is always my stand-by. It doesn't have to be homemade, but if you can find a good vegetarian vegetable soup, you're good. Pack a slice of crusty bread and enjoy.
5) Tossed salads. They are no-fail. To me, they are really refreshing in the winter as I tend to eat a lot of heavy foods. Add your fave veggies and put the dressing on right before you eat.
I hope that helps!
