Buy Natural Health Supplements
Question: Where can I buy iodine supplements in person? I am looking to buy iodine in pill form as a supplement for thyroid function and would like to know where I can buy them in person. Also if there is a specific brand I should look for. Can I get this at a natural health store or somewhere like Walgreens or Walmart?
I can't afford to go the doctor at this time and health departments don't deal with thyroid issues. I found out I should buy kelp tablets and I can get them about anywhere. Thanks though
Answer: First off, education is key especially regarding iodine supplements. I understand that you cannot afford to go to a thyroid specialist, but if you incorrectly take iodine or misdiagnose yourself you will end up making your thyroid worse. The library is best for you to begin your research and it is free! Truly, you need to be blood or salvia tested to determine exactly where in your body your health problem(s) are.

Question: Will taking serotonin supplements deplete your natural supply of serotonin? I was thinking about buying some serotonin supplements at the health store, and I was wondering if there were any adverse effects of it? Does it supply you with serotonin, or does it trigger your brain to produce serotonin? If the second, will that cause your brain to deplete its natural supply of serotonin?
Has anyone ever bought any and can share if they're worth the purchase/taking?
Answer: The whole biochemical process for serotonin requires essential vitamins and minerals or these supplements are not going to work otherwise. Foods high in tryptophan are part of this biochemical process. Tryptophan converts into 5HTP naturally however. As for depleting serotonin from serotonin supplements eg: 5HTP, sam- E (not including anti depressants - the method of action are unknown for these drugs), no they will not deplete serotonin levels. Other factors like stress, poor diet/lack of essential vitamins and minerals, lack of vitamin D, hormonal and thyroid imbalances all deplete natural serotonin levels.

Question: What are some natural supplements you can take for anxiety/depression? Tried and true? I've done some e-searching but i'm skeptical to try a few different ones as i'm a broke college student. I cannot afford health insurance and I do not qualify for any government programs so this is my last hope. Has anybody tried buying herbal supplements, and if so, did any of them have any sort of significance?
Answer: Ask yourself: "Why do I feel depressed, and when did I first start to feel this way: can I associate this with any recent change in my life?" (if so, it is probably reactive [situational] depression: counselling, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be indicated, but most of life's adverse situations are resolved within 16 weeks, yet the medical criteria for depression, and the prescription of antidepressants is only 2 weeks!). Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause? (a nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, etc., becomes more likely as the cause). Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types. St. John's wort helps most people; tolerance doesn't develop, and the few side effects don't occur often, and even then are normally not severe (neither should be relied on as a sole treatment).
It doesn't cause sleeping problems, or weight change, but usually takes at least 2, and generally 4 - 6 weeks to become effective, but can work quicker than antidepressants, sometimes. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as a commonly prescribed antidepressant, in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it happens much more rarely with St. John's wort (I have noticed no effect in this area). A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows. All except for no. (7.) are safe to use with medication, but not St. John's wort, because of interactions, and it's sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor.
(1.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. In the winter months, if not getting sufficient daily exposure to strong light, see http://www.mercola.com/ SEARCHBAR: enter: "vitamin D3", & Go to a doctor and ask for a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, blood test. When you get the results, don’t follow the typical “normal” reference range, as these are too low. The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 45-52 ng/ml (115-128 nmol/l)". The company which tests your levels has to be one of those using the correct form of test, and this topic is addressed via the searchbar at mercola.com - "vitamin D3; testing". Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% - 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements.
(2.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 - 60 mns, 5 times weekly. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn't wanted when dealing with depression. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). (4.) Use daily, a relaxation method* and/or yoga*, and/or Tai Chi*.(5.) Initially, at least, some form of psychotherapy or counselling; later, perhaps either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy for, say, 6 months. (6.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule**. (7.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, (get a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in effectiveness. Perika, and Kira brands have been recommended as being effective. Take with a meal) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55).
Question: I'm a slim guy going to gym, what is better protein supplements or natural protein sources? I know creatine substances not good for health, so wont take that. But i am PURE VEGEATARIAN, so can't take eggs or meat. I am living out in hostel, away from home, so cant get home like nutrition from the food out here. Do protein supplements do any harm? YOU should have exprienced these substances to answer me. I know natural things r best, but will take me 2 years to build medium size chests and back muscles, and i want it little fast as well as safer. So am planning to buy simple albumen or whey protein supplements, if any harm then please tell me and suggest the best protein source accordingly. Presenlty i drink half litre milk after coming from gym in morning at 9 am.
Answer: Well there's whey protein isolate, concentrate, hydrolyzed whey protein and others, but the best that I've ever used is whey protein concentrate (undenatured). It's the most bioavailable so your body utilizes it very easily. This is one of the things I use. Naturaly protein sources are good as well, and if you only want a supplement, then I suggest spirulina algae because its protein content is 3x higher than beef. Good luck with your muscle growth!
Question: I would love to see a section: Picking natural supplements that are real nutraceuticals. M.E.Laird, Ph.D.? I have my Ph.D. in Natural Health. So many people come to me saying they had tried this supplement or that herb and got no results. People need to know what to look for, questions to ask, and how to determine if they really need a nutraceutical. People are throwing their money away by going to health food store and buying just "whatever" looks good or what they heard would help. Nutraceuticals are natural molecules that have real research behind them to know they cause a pharmaceutical effect. They must be active molecules and processed properly or they have no value to them. This is an area that the average person needs some knowledge about for their own health. Thanks for letting me post. Will I know if you decide to add this to your site??
Thanks,
Martha E. Laird
M.Ed, Ph.D.
Answer: Nutraceuticals are neither Nutritional food nor pharmaceuticals. One should not expect definitive health benefits by using them alone. People should not get carried away by reading attractive explanations given on product labels and waste their money. Usually herbal supplements do not give instant results. The effects are slow but steady.
It is always better to seek proper medical advise for health problems, rather than using this supplement or that supplement found in shops.
I am an Ayurveda Physician with my PhD and having over 35 years of clinical practice. Thanks.

Question: Will they really take away our supplements as of December 31, 2009? Codex Alimentarius? http://www.natural-health-information-centre.com/codex-alimentarius.html
look it up there's tons of websites that says they want to stop us from buying natural vitamins and minerals. I could scarcely find a website that said otherwise.
Shouldn't we do something to prevent this??
Answer: No, it can't remove supplements from the open market. Worries like this have actually been happening since the 70s... it's nothing new. But it is very good to refresh the idea in our minds every so often to make sure none of these slip by.
There are other countries in the world that have adopted the Codex and some of them have chosen to regulate supplements by requiring a doctor's prescription (Germany is one of the biggest ones), but in and of itself, it doesn't specifically require a limitation of supplements. We typically have customers calling and asking about this specifically every couple months or so... and once every year or so, there's some article that causes an influx of the question.
There's always some new bill before congress or something going through some branch of the government, but ultimately, access to dietary supplements can NOT be removed from the general population... the Supreme Court passed a ruling back in the late 70s or early 80s (I can never remember the year) that says it can't happen.
The last major report that was brought to the attention of the general public was in December, 2006 (S. 3546, the Dietary Supplement and Non-Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act, also called the “AER bill”). As with all the others, it did not affect the availability of dietary supplements, nor did it grant the Food and Drug Administration new powers to regulate dietary supplements. The government already tracks all adverse experiences that could be related to dietary supplements. This required that manufacturers who get reports of consumers being seriously harmed by their products can’t keep them secret. You can read more about this at http://capwiz.com/nnfa/utr/1/LJRMGNFHJU/BPFVGNFHMN/986404536
The mention before that I can find is from August of 1998 when Life Extension was warning all their subscribers that they may lose their access to dietary supplements... as you can see, that hasn't happened just like all the others haven't. That's listed along with a brief history of the concerns like this that have come up (none of which have succeeded) at http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag98/aug98_cover.html
Now, with all that being said, whenever anything like this comes up in the news, the best thing to do is to alert Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and any other representatives in the political arena to make them aware of it and let them know that you don't want dietary supplements to be limited in any way. That's the best way to ensure any limitations are reduced as much as possible.
Thank you for pointing out this information!
Question: Natural Supplement Advice? Hi, I have always ate healthy and exercised three times a week, but I can never reach my goal weight. Im thinking on trying a natural supplement. Any advice? Maybe Acai Berry? Can I even buy it at a health store? Does it actually help? Or is there something better for me? Please let me know what has worked for you. Im also thinking on trying a body cleanser. Any advice will be appreciated, Thanks for reading =D
Answer: The antioxidants from Acai are ten to thirty times that of red wine and more than twice that of blueberries. It's known to have the best nutritional value of any fruit on the planet, earning it the title of super berry.
The Amazon super berry has gained recognition in the media, including television and magazines. There are several companies and websites that offer Acai products. Some products contain Acai exclusively, while others use it in combination with other ingredients. Acai shows up in fruit drinks and in powder form as health and energy products.
With all the popularity in recent years, the benefits of the Acai berry is widely unknown. People of the Amazon have long experienced the benefits of Acai to fight disease, strengthen the immune system, fight infection, protect the heart, and provide overall health and healing. These same benefits of this super berry are now available to health-minded individuals through taking Amazon Thunder.
Acai is a complete food source and contains an abundance of nutrients necessary for restoring and maintaining optimum health. Acai contains amino acids and vital trace elements important for muscle contraction and regeneration. Acai's nutrients, including a large amount of natural lipids, provide needed energy to tackle competitive sports and daily chores. Acai contains more protein than the average egg. Proteins are the primary component of hormones and body tissues, including muscles and organs.
The Acai berry can help to regulate your stress levels and repair your body. Acai's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can counter infertility due to stress, pollution and factors related to free radicals. Acai's immune-system-strengthening qualities help protect the entire body. Acai has been used for centuries to cleanse the body from contaminants. The regenerative nutrients and strong antioxidants in Acai help keep our cells operating efficiently and may slow aging.nti-oxidents.
Question: What supplements do I need to stay healthy? I'm a health nut, and there too many supplements out there that I don't know if I need to take them.
I'm 23/M taking One-A-Day All Day Energy multivitamins, and I just bought some fish oil.
Please explain thoroughly what I need to be a natural Superman and save the world!
Answer: You need to eat healthy, mostly...they say that supplements are good, but the vitamins & minerals that you get from food is usually better.
For example, broccoli helps to prevent cancer, carrots help with your eyes (beta Carotene), Tomato sauce is good for your colon, Ponegranet (sp?) juice is good for your prostate, grape juice and red grapes are good for your heart/blood, etc.
Whey protein is good, but then there's also soy protein, and many other types to choose from...really all depends on what you want to get out of it.
But if you're into supplements, then you appear to be on the right track. One a day is good for your age, and the fish oil is big now. Omega-3 & flax is good, just be careful not to take too much, for some you actually can O.D. on. So no matter how many vitamins you take, you'll never increase your immune system to that of Wolverine's.

Question: Where can I purchase soy and junk free supplements? Does anyone know where I can purchase a range of soy free supplements and vitamins from?
In the past I have gone to supermarkets and high street health stores but unfortunately the majority of the vitamins and supplements they sell that I'd like to buy unfortunately contain things in the ingredients that I wish to avoid e.g. Soy, Wheat, Gluten, Aspartame. Some of the supplements I am interested in are things like 1000mg Effervescent Vitamin C tablets minus the Aspartame and Zinc. Omega 3, 6 and 9 capsules made from Flaxseed but minus the Soy and Sulphites, Coenzyme Q-10 minus the titanium, emulsifier, soy.
Other supplements I'd like to buy minus any the garbage include Coral Calcium tablets, Vitamin K tablets, Vitamin B complex.
In other words I am looking for pure natural supplements without any extra junk and preservatives added. As natural as possible in supplement form.
Some of the things I wish to avoid include Soy, Wheat, Gluten, msg, hfcs, aspartame, other artificial sweeteners, e numbers, gm, flouride, phthalates, anti-caking agents, sulphur dioxide, other preservatives, soft metals, maltodextrin, cellulose, titanium dioxide, zinc, talc, anything stearate, most things dioxide, most things sulphate, starch, chlorine and chlorides. There may be many more but you get the picture.
Without going back to the base raw foods containing the things I need, does anyone know of anywhere that sells organic natural supplements online or in the high street without all the above mentioned junk added?
Thanks very much for your help.
Answer: The best place to order those things are online.
I buy vitamin B complex, vitamin D, vitamin A products from iherb.com
They have all the vitamin products that do not contain any of the things that you want to avoid. I can't tolerate gluten either.
NOW FOODS is the best company to choose your vitamins from.
Question: How common is it for The Siberian husky breed to have Zinc responsive dermatitis? a skin condition which improves by giving Zinc supplements?
Do you have this problem with your siberian husky or know anyone with a siberian husky that has skin problems?
or is this very rare for the siberian husky breed and most don't have those problems like they are known for eye and hip problem.
I was just researching the common health problems that a siberian husky has. I want to be educated about the common natural health problems that are most reported and you should beaware of when you buy a puppy from a siberian husky breeder .
Should the breeder show you the health history's for the last 4 generations to prove their dogs are a High class health Quality dog.
Answer: Its not terribly common among well bred dogs, nor is it a critical life threatening disease.
Most crucial are making sure Hips and Elbows have been certified free of dysplasia. You should be able to look up the dog's parents certification on OFA (www.offa.org) if they are in the US. Also you'll want to see a current (within a year) CERF certification.
You should get, at minimum a 5 generation pedigree. All dogs in that pedigree should have hip scores.
If this is your first dog, do a LOT of research. Siberian Huskies are fantastic dogs, but are not necessarily great dogs for a first time owner.
Talk at great length to the breeder. If you find the breeder intolerant of being asked questions, go elsewhere!!! A good breeder wants to sell their puppies to well-educated homes.

Question: What hormone is out of balance with me? Two questions here:
1. What am I lacking here?
2. What can I do about it?
So...I'm 43 and my menstrual cycles are pretty regular every 30 days. I have two children and I'm still nursing my 20-month-old once or twice a day.
I have very heavy periods and get very angry and aggressive around that time. Sounds weird but my breasts used to be larger than they are now...just fuller. I guess I don't feel as womanly these days! Feel tense and aggressive! I know I'm lacking in a hormone or have too much of something. I don't have health insurance right now and cannot afford expensve lab work to figure this out. Hoping there might be a natural, safe way to experiement and see if I can balance this out on my own. I'm thinking specific herbs or supplements I can find on my own in my area.
PLEASE DON'T send me links to any miracle cures or specific supplements online. I want to hear real answers and if I cannot buy it at my local health food store or natural health provider in my area (I'm in Portland, Oregon)...then don't bother answering! I never buy supplements or anything like this online.
Thank you in advance for some real assistance!!
Answer: Honestly, it sounds to me like you're experiencing early symptoms of menopause. I know I started around your age, or even a couple years earlier.
There's nothing that I would recommend you taking since you're still nursing, but I've had a couple of friends have great success with yam cream. You can ask the pharmacist to compound some for you.
After your child is completely weaned, you can talk to your doctor about possible hormone therapy. It's got a lot of side effects, but many women, after weighing the risks and benefits, decide that it's worth it.
Good luck.
Question: are acai supplements good for weight loss? I Just bought some natures bounty acai 1000 mg supplements.
I've heard acai berry is good for loosing weight, however the bottle doesn't say anything on it about helping with weight loss.....
It says it is a superfood used for health and vitality....has natural flavanoids and antioxidants...protect against free radicals, cell damage, etc etc .........
SOO.......... what are these really good for!?!
Answer: They are good boosting your immune system with the antioxidants. They certainly wont hurt but as far as for weight loss I have seen those ads about it helping you lose weight but I don't know if it will work by itself. I use a program that shows you what exercises to do to get the best results and also shows you how to eat healthier. I have lost a large amount of weight and the one thing you need to understand is you a have to change the way you eat for the rest of your life if you want results that are permanent. (also ends yo-yo dieting and the temptations to take unhealthy supplements) I am so glad that I did and some of the foods you eat can actually help you lose weight and this program teaches you that too. I still follow it!

Question: are one source multivitamins synthetic or natural? I heared that synthetic vitamins pretty much do nothing to your body, so your money is just going down the drain. For example, Vitamin C needs all its cofactors to work efficienty, and only uses one of the many cofactors present in natural Vitamin C.
So, the company "One Source". Is that really a good source of a dietary natural supplements for my vitamin intake? or is there a better, more efficient vitamin source than "One Source".
Or should I just stick with natural occurring whole foods that contain these vitamins, because I seriously lack all of the necessary nutritional values a person must obtain on the daily, because nobody in my household can buy groceries anymore. So, I just want to know the best way to acquire these vitamins (A, B:1,2,3,6,12, C, D, E, K) to get my health back in order.
So, if any of you guys who have more of an experience with dietary supplements and viatamins can help me, that would be great. If possible, I was also wondering what you guys eat on a daily basis to get a better feel of what I should eat, especially considering that I have a high metabolism, and a lack of nutrients.
Thank you to all that can help.
Answer: I strongly advocate natural food. In order that there is adequate nutrition, make sure that you take white, yellow, red, black and green food. Avoid deep fried food. Be a vegetarian if possible.
As for supplements, take them only occassionally. Vegetarians are known to lack B12. But C is good despite some negative remarks in the medical circle. I certainly always benefit from taking C. Recently I come across another supplement: Magnesium chloride. It seems to be beneficial in many ways. You can read more at http://www.health-science-spirit.com/magnesiumchloride.html
Question: Dear DOCTOR!? can i mix two herbal supplements to improve the appearence of my skin!? now i have mild to moderate acne, and i used to take Lymecycline / Tetralysal 300 tablets for it (prescribed by my doctor). It seemed to be working wonders the first two months, i stopped and went back on them again because my acne returned. however there was not that much more of an improvement.
This is when i looked into herbal alternatives from the health food shops. I was wondering if i can i take the traditional herbal remedy for minor skin disorders and acne called 'HRI clear complexion tablets'(containing burdock root, blue flag and sarsaparilla) with a 'Skin, Hair and Nails Supplement' containing :
'Dicalcium Phosphate,
Calcium Carbonate, Bulking Agents
(Microcrystalline Cellulose, Dicalcium
Phosphate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose),
Magnesium Oxide,
Choline Bitartrate, Sodium
Carboxymethylcellulose, Anti-Caking
Agents (Silicon Dioxide, Magnesium
Stearate, Stearic Acid), Vitamin C
(as Ascorbic Acid), Rose Hips, Zinc
Gluconate, Maltodextrin, Manganese
Gluconate, Inositol, RNA (Ribonucleic
Acid), Ferrous Gluconate, Niacin (as
Niacinamide), Betaine Hydrochloride,
PABA (Para-Aminobenzoic Acid),
Citrus Bioflavonoids, Pantothenic
Acid (as d-Calcium Pantothenate),
Partially Hydrogenated Soya Bean
Oil, Rutin, Vitamin E (as d-Alpha
Tocopheryl Acetate and dl-Alpha
Tocopherol), Thiamin Hydrochloride
(Vitamin B1), Vitamin B6 (as
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Sucrose,
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Starch,
Gelatine, Vitamin A (as Retinyl
Palmitate), Glazing Agents
(Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose,
Triacetin), Firming Agent (Povidone),

i bought both from the shop 'Holland and Barrett'(UK) .
would it be safe or acceptable to combine both daily, considering they are both natural remedies/herbal supplement from a health food store with different ingredients(therefore i don't think i could overdose on something) or would mixing the two be harmful to my health? or could one perhaps have a interfere or have a negative effect on the other?
thank you!
Answer: Wow, that second one sounds like it's almost a multivitamin for skin. Yes, those are perfectly safe to take together... not because they are both natural, but because of the ingredients. Those herbs have no warnings against taking them with those basic vitamins and minerals. Good luck and I hope I helped!
