Calcium Supplement

Question: Calcium supplement? i am 13 years old and i dont drink milk. i am taking a calcium supplement, the "serving size" is two pills which i think adds up to like 1200mg or 120%. ik thats for an adult. I take Half the dose which is one pill. 600mg, is that too much? i am 4ft, 9 in (ik short) and i weigh about 75-80 lbs. well i am also taking a multivitamin. which has 10% calcium. also the supplement has vitamin D in it as well, would that make it easier to absorb?

Answer: actually at anyone time, your body will only absorb 40% of the total amount of the calcium pill content each time. That is you take 600mg of calcium, your body only takes in 240mg of calcium only. You can take other natural calcium food like fish, tofu, brocoli, small fish with bones like tuna - eat together with the bones, tuna, beancurd and other bean products. In this way, you can increase your calcium intake even though you don't drink milk. Answering your question, if you are only taking 1 calcium pill and not any other calcium rich food, then your calcium intake is too low as being a 13years old, your bone is still growing and you need lots of calcium to grow your bones.
