Calcium Supplement
Question: Calcium supplement? i am 13 years old and i dont drink milk. i am taking a calcium supplement, the "serving size" is two pills which i think adds up to like 1200mg or 120%. ik thats for an adult. I take Half the dose which is one pill. 600mg, is that too much? i am 4ft, 9 in (ik short) and i weigh about 75-80 lbs.
well i am also taking a multivitamin. which has 10% calcium. also the supplement has vitamin D in it as well, would that make it easier to absorb?
Answer: actually at anyone time, your body will only absorb 40% of the total amount of the calcium pill content each time.
That is you take 600mg of calcium, your body only takes in 240mg of calcium only. You can take other natural calcium food like fish, tofu, brocoli, small fish with bones like tuna - eat together with the bones, tuna, beancurd and other bean products. In this way, you can increase your calcium intake even though you don't drink milk. Answering your question, if you are only taking 1 calcium pill and not any other calcium rich food, then your calcium intake is too low as being a 13years old, your bone is still growing and you need lots of calcium to grow your bones.
Question: What calcium supplement should I take while pregnant? Has your doctor recommended any supplements to you? What calcium supplement should I take while pregnant? Has your doctor recommended any supplements to you?
Answer: None in particular are better than another. Most of the time the prenatal vitamins have enough calcium in them. My Dr told me to drink more milk for calcium because its better to get nutrients from the food you eat, not the pills you take.
Question: Is taking vitamin calcium supplement healthy for a 13 years old kid who is underweight? He weights around 75 pounds and is 4'11...He hasn't gone through puberty he took the supplement 500 mg vitamin d + calcium for 2 days and then he started coughing, then he blame it on the supplement pill makin him cough. Is it totally healthy for him even if it's overdose? Should i take the pill away and let him drink milk only, would milk be enough?
Answer: Doctors are now recommending 2000mg a day vitamin d for an average person (adult). And calcium can build up in deposit if overused, i have one on my leg.....but i just drank milk! Talk to your pediatrician or go to http://www.medhelp.org and ask in the pediatric community for free. (ask a doctor costs $$ on that site, but community has free docs...)

Question: how often should I take a calcium supplement as a young male who does not drink milk daily? I am a male college student and I take a multivitamin and work out a few times a week, but i do not drink a glass of milk a day. How often should I look at taking a calcium supplement with my multivitamin?
Thanks!
Answer: Take 1300 milligrams a day in 2 doses. Vitamin D is necessary to process it. Be sure you're getting your Vitamin D, from sunlight or from eggs and meats. Also, Vitamin A helps process Vitamin D. Vitamin A is used best as beta-carotine. Be sure you are taking both. Be sure that you are getting plenty of potassium as well. Many nutrients work together.
Question: What kind of vitamin and calcium supplement to give leopard geckos? is it ok to give them Rep-Cal phosphorus free, calcium with vitamin D3, ultrafine powder supplement
Answer: Sounds perfect, they need a calcium with D3 supplement. Just make sure to gutload your crickets/mealworms 24 hours before feeding them to your leopard gecko then give them a good coating of that supplement right before they get thrown into the geckos cage :)
Question: Is it better to take calcium carbonate or calcium citrate as a supplement? My doctor told me to start taking a calcium supplement. I forgot to ask what kind of calcium. What do you think? I can call on Monday to clarify, but thought I'd see what responses I'd get here. Thanks.
Answer: Citrate is more soluble. Preferred .
Question: What is the best type of calcium supplement to take? I've heard that calcium carbonate is not that good, and that it may cause kidney stones. Is there one type that is better? I need supplements because I can not tolerate dairy products, and I'm in my 30's. Any advice would be appreciated!
Answer: You can just drink calcium fortified soy milk or orange juice. They contain about 30% of your required daily calcium intake. It can also be found in green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals, and tofu. It is best to get it from your diet. If you do take a supplement you need 1000mg/day, but you don't want to take it all at once because your body will not absorb it all at once. If you can take 4 250mg supplements throughout the day you will probably get the most calcium absorption.
Question: Best time to take a calcium supplement with Vitamin D supplement? I'm taking 50,000 IU of Vitamin D twice a week for a deficiency. I'm wondering when the best time to take my calcium supplement is if I'm taking the Vitamin D. For instance will most calcium be absorbed if I take them together or an hour apart? Does it even matter?
Answer: Vitamin D helps the absorption of Calcium when they are taken at the same time, at least 2-3 times a day, and never more than 600 mg of Calcium at a time. The body can't absorb more than 600 mg of Calcium at any given point in time and you need at least 1,000 mg per day for optimal bone health (ergo, 2-3 doses per day). You could take them at the same time or apart since Vitamin D stores in the system, but ideally, you'd want to take Vitamin D with Calcium on a regular basis (like when you aren't mega-dosing).
You might want to take Vitamin D more in conjunction with the Calcium, but I would recommend asking your doctor if you can take extra Vitamin D or if that wouldn't be safe with you trying to overcome the deficiency with the mega-dose of Vitamin D. Also to note, Vitamin D is one of several nutrients that help the absorption of Calcium... there's also Magnesium, Boron, Vitamin K, Silica, Zinc/Copper, and Ipriflavone among others. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Question: Does consumption of iron and calcium supplement at the same time have any effect on fetal growth? My wife is 20 weeks pregnant. We recently came to know that calcium and iron supplements are not to be taken at the same time. However, till the 16 th week my wife was taking both the iron and calcium supplements at the same time. However, her diet was rich in calcium and iron supplements. Will these have any effect on the fetal growth.
Answer: There should be no effect on foetal growth, as the foetus draws it from Mum to Mum's detriment. You can still take both - but you need to ensure that the iron is not taken within 4 hours of the calcium (ie you could do one at night, and one in the morning, or one morning and night and the other at midday). Tea, legumes, rice and grains can reduce the absorption of non-haem iron as well, so moderate their ingestion. Vitamin C helps with the absorption of non-haem iron, so eating fruit throughout the day will assist maintaining or building iron levels and/or stores.
(FYI non-haem iron, like what is in most enhanced foods and fruit and veg, is less readily absorbed by the body. The best iron is haem-iron, like in red meats).
Question: I am allergic to shellfish and need to take a calcium supplement. What kind should I get that will be safe? I took a 1/2 dose of liquid coral calcium to check the taste and immediately had a reaction. I need to be on a supplement due to bone loss in my spine but now I'm afraid to take anything without something in black and white...help.
Answer: Your pharmacist should be able to help you.
Question: ran out of my antiacid ulcer meds so i took some tums antiacid/calcium supplement is that bad? I wouldnt ask this question but i just read something that siad aviod calcium supplement. Is this correct?
Answer: If you have heartburn, you have heartburn and theres nothing like popping a few tums to get that relief. I was diagnosed with Grade 1 GERD (Gastro-Esophageal-Reflux-Disease) and a Hiatal hernia when I was 22 years old. I was having heartburn SO bad that I was going through a 500 count bottle of TUMS in less than a month!! I finally went to the doc and had an endoscopy and was diagnosed. Since then, Ive been on Prevacid.
Occasionally I'll pop a TUMS for quicker relief (when I forget my Prevacid or hadnt taken it that day) and it helps.
If you read an article that says you arent suposed to take calcium supplements, then thats like asking you to stop drinking milk. Or eating much of anything period with calcium in it. Calcium is in almost everything we eat and drink....
I seriously think that you will be okay with taking TUMS to relieve your heartburn. If you are really that concerned, look up your local hospital in the phone book and call the nurse help line (should be a 1800 number) and it will hook you directly with an RN or a PA or even a doc and they can answer your question for free (without a visit) to whether or not it was okay to take TUMS.
But like I said, I seriously think that you'll be okay since you took the TUMS.
Question: Did You Take a Calcium Supplement While Pregnant? I have heard several women say they took a cal-mag (calcium magnesium) supplement along with their prenatals during pregnancy. How do you know if you need an additional calcium supplement aside from what is in your prenatal? Thanks!
Answer: i am not pregnant yet, but i do take a prenatal vitamin along with an extra folic acid vitamin and a calcium magnesium zinc vitamin.
i dont always eat the best, so thats why i take them.
Question: Did you take any additional calcium supplement besides prenatal vitamin in pregnancy? I am not a milk drinker and my prenatal vitamin only has about 500mg of calcium. The daily recommended for calcium for pregnant women is 1,200. I am just wondering would it be a good idea to take some calcium supplements in addition to my prenatal vitamins?
Answer: You probably should take some extra. I'm not sure how much my prenatal vitamin has in it but I just take an extra 500mg a day. I okayed it with my midwife just to make sure.
Question: are u suppose to stop taking a calcium supplement in the third trimester of pregnancy? My Mother-in-law and my Dr, overseas say's you should stop calcium supplements by the 7month of pregnancy due to baby's head to be soft for delivery
Answer: that's ridiculous... you should take calcium tablets during the last trimester especially becoz that's when the baby's bones are forming... if you don't take, the baby will get his/her calcium from your body and you will feel your teeth loosening up and shaky.. it happened to my friends. so be careful and take your calcium supplements devotedly.
