Cancer Prevention Products
Question: CANCER: Prevention....there are so many variables, but a few things are for sure! Do you have an opinion? Our chemical industry is partly to blame!
An unregulated cosmetic industry. They get to put in anything they want.
Origin of materials of manufactured items.
Cancer can take 30 to 50 years to develop and involve 100's of factors.
Very few "decades long" term studies involving genetically modified food substances for humans.
Such as the three Chlorines added to a sugar molecule to become SPLENDA.
And what about products we place are food on or into?
We just found out about the Bisphosphonates scare in baby bottles and other plastics.
Then the Methylene Chloride gas used into make SILPATS and other Silicone bakeware and cookware was just found to cause cancer in lab animals.
Don't we need more regulation of the chemical to protect our families?
Answer: All need to go back to basics!
Use what they used during the olden days... eat what they eat.. do what they do and think what think, as in being SIMPLE!
I used to live, eat and think in a sophisticated & modern way ... but it seems that happiness is to own very little but yet very happy!
Make a choice to live in a very simple way, be happy even when you see the sky is blue.
Do away with hi tech tools, use porcelainware & an old fashion wok to cook food, do not store food, eat fresh every meal.
Use simple soaps & hot water to clean, or add a dash of lemon if you like. keep away from complicated things.
Somehow, it seems that 80% cancer patients that I met told me that they caught cancer because of emotional turmoil.... a more than 3 months of constant unhappiness or depression has made their immune system weaken and developed cancer, not so much of other reasons.
So, 7 years dealing with cancer patients and listening to them analysing the root of the problem, I conclude that the EQ & AQ of a person decide if a person is prone to get cancer.Persons with high Eo Q & AQ will accept & understand others easily and while attend to problems objectively, they will reason things out rationally, they are always happy, their immune system is strong because even their immune cells are happy, therefore the happy immune cells keep cancer cells at bay!
To know your CELLS is to know your SELF!
Persons who get cancer has two distinguishable characteristic:
1. Perfectionist who push themselves too hard
2. Perfectionsit who pushes others too hard
Therefore, cancer patients are basically welkown for their good work either at work or at home.
So, live a simple & happy life is key to Cancer Prevention!
Question: Looking for Donations to help find a cure for Breast Cancer? Hi my name is Samantha and I am 19. Breast Cancer Fund is holding their 12th Annual Peak Hike. I will be doing the 11.5 mile hike for breast cancer research at Mt. Tamalpais in Marin Ca. This event is to take place October 14th, 2007. I am asking for Donations.
Prevention Starts Here - with your support. The Breast Cancer Fund is making groundbreaking efforts to safeguard the health of our friends and families. As breast cancer rates escalate, we are continually exposed to known or suspected cancer-causing chemicals in our food, water, air and the everyday products we use in our homes. Chemicals which were banned decades ago persist in our bodies, a shocking reminder of the environmental legacy we live with today. Your donation today allows us to demand a new approach to corporate accountability and chemical regulation that will protect our health and prevent breast cancer and other diseases. If you would like to make a donation visit my homepage for this event http://www.breastcancerfund.org/ph2007/samhollis

Answer: I think it is GREAT what you are doing. If there were more people in your age group that are aware of cancer, it would be so good. I was your age, 19, when diagnosed with Breast cancer. Thank YOU for what you are doing.
Would it be ok if I posted your link on my MySpace page? You can check it out at

Question: why can't animal flea/tick prevention be used on humans? IS there anything harmful in products such as advantage? I mean, does this cause a dogs life expectancy to be less, or perhaps cause cancer? This was just a strange question I had always wondered? Why can't they use it on humans? I find products like these kind of interesting and would love to learn what makes them work...yeah..I guess I am weird=)
Answer: It is because their liver processes it differently than a human's does. It would cause serious health problems for a human, and quite possibly death. However, in the animal it is prescribed for, it does not harm them at all.
Question: Just wondered if their were any woman out there that won't take the pill because they don't trust it? And, I'm not talking about trusting it to prevent pregnancy. I'm talking about not trusting it because what it can or may do to your body. Cause cancer, maybe screw up or toy with your reproductive system or the eggs you produce. The medical commuinty says it is a good measure for the prevention of cervical cancer, etc.. I don't buy that - they are just trying to sell more product... If you don't take the pill becuase of the reasons I listed above and some... YOU ARE ONE BRIGHT CHIC! Comments?
Answer: I dont take the pill, or the shot, or use the patch. Because I do not trust it like you said. I am not interested in destroying my female organs in order to prevent a pregnancy that I am not even putting myself at risk of having. I am married and I use condoms, I figure if a pregnancy results after the proper use of condoms, that its no big deal. I mean which is worse, cancer or pregnancy? Id take the pregnancy over the cancer any day. Also a woman in my church had been on birth control for a long time, and she got off in order to get pregnant, well everything was fine, but right after the birth, she ended up dying of a mysterious blood clot in her leg. I think the pill may have played a role in that. I think its a shame that doctors refuse to put out a safe birth control method on the market, and that we are still faced with this dilemma of whether to risk complications, or risk having a baby. It should not have to be one or the other.
Question: Second Hand Smoke and Pets - important information DO NOT REPORT? Someone reported my question and had it deleted, I posted it for people that actually care about their pets health.
I know it's not a question but there are people who may be interested in this article. Some people may find it interesting.
Health officials often talk about the dangers of living with a smoker, but few pet parents are aware that our animal companions face similar risks—from respiratory problems to cancer—when exposed to secondhand smoke. New research suggests that secondhand smoke is unsafe at all levels—for humans and pets—so it's time to get serious about ditching those butts for good.
One recent study shows that nearly 30 percent of pets live with at least one smoker. This is a grave concern, according to Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, Medical Director of the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, since secondhand smoke can damage the nervous systems of both cats and dogs.
"Tobacco smoke has been shown to contain numerous cancer-causing compounds, making it hazardous for animals as well as humans," says Dr. Gwaltney-Brant. "Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause many of the same harmful inflammatory changes in the airways and lungs of dogs as their human counterparts."
Cats who live with smokers are prone to developing malignant lymphoma, perhaps as a result of ingesting carcinogenic residue when it settles on their fur. Kitty's canine counterparts are especially vulnerable to secondhand smoke's respiratory effects, and can develop life-threatening nasal and lung cancers.
Nicotine—found in cigarettes and other tobacco products—is also highly toxic to animals if ingested. A dog who accidentally eats tobacco may develop weakness, muscle twitching, decreased breathing rate, and finally collapse, coma and possibly death. The ASPCA strongly recommends keeping your pet away from tobacco as well as secondhand smoke.
In honor of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month this April, why not resolve to avoid smoking around your pet? Smoke outside and preserve the lungs of your two- and four-legged family members. Or better yet, toss those cigarettes in the trash—your pet will thank you! For more information about protecting the health of your furry friend, please visit the ASPCA’s Guide to Pet Care.
cassie_331 - I have already said that this is not a question, it's just some information that some people may not have known before.
I should have known I'd get all negative answers, I am not trying to get anyone to change just to be more aware of it.
Answer: I commend you for attempting to enlighten the public. I agree that most people *don't* think about the harmful effects their smoking may have on animals. It's the same for children! It's like if the person/animal can't/doesn't argue, then it must not mind the smoke. And this is coming from an ex-smoker! I smoked for almost 10 years in close proximity to my animals and even my little brother and sister. And you know I never thought twice about it. But now that I've been smoke-free for 3 years, I notice how wrong it is for us to smoke around our pets.
Thank you for posting this for everyone to see!
Question: can you proof read my essay and tell me what you think and if theres any punctuation i need to correct? The Effects of a Mindfulness Manipulation on Adolescent Smoking
Isn’t smoking great? It’s not like cigarettes kill so many people a year and it’s not like
“second hand smoke” even harms non-smokers. Right, Wrong Smoking can cause trouble, Tobacco smoke is a human killer, and even if you don’t smoke you can be in harm.
Evidence suggests that smoking cigarettes increases the likelihood of suffering from heart disease, emphysema, lung cancer, high blood pressure, and premature aging. The smoker is also at risk of many short-term health consequences such as chronic cough, yellow teeth, and unpleasant breath. The American Cancer Society estimates that cigarettes are responsible for about 431,000 deaths in the United States each year. Lung cancer accounts for about 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States, and smoking accounts for nearly 90 percent of lung cancer deaths. The smoking habit and addiction to nicotine usually begin at an early age. In the United States, more than 70 percent of adults who smoke began smoking before the age of 18. This fact has led to particular concern over smoking in teenagers and young adults.
Tobacco industries direct 90% of recommendation their cigarette advertisements toward today's youth, hoping to hook another young adolescent into their money making scheme. Onset of smoking in children occurs at an early age due to a number of factors that include pro-social smoking advertisements, peer and even parents in certain circumstances. Primary prevention techniques that attempt to stop the behavior before it starts are effective because children are still young enough to be molded and influenced accordingly by the proper role-models.
Preventative measures, such as informational campaigns are ineffective because they are unrealistic and fail to emphasize on the here and now. These measures focus on the future health risks that may occur 20 or 30 years down the line, which is much to long for a twelve-year-old to concern himself about. Adolescents also believe that they are invincible and therefore not subject to the health risks of all other smokers. For a young adolescent, life is still novel and carefree. The health risks of smoking are not part of a twelve-year-olds mindset-at least not until he or she is grandpa's age.
A common habit difficult to resist when tempted. Fear manipulations lack preventative power because many of the health risks of smoking are long term, for a young teenager-what out of sight is out of mind. Fear manipulations are unrealistic simply because of the waiting period before the onset of disease.
Early teens spend most of their time with peers, rather than parents. Mom and Dad play more of a secondary role during the teen years. It makes sense that young teens are easily persuaded by their peer group simply because the greater part of the day is spent interacting with them. Parents do not become the active roll model until dinner time for a few hours until lights out. If a youngster believes that smoking is common and normal, he or she may say if everyone else does it, so will I.
Approximately 7 million tons of commercial tobaccos are grown each year, with a value of $39 billion. Leading tobacco-growing countries are China, the United States, India, Brazil, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. Tobacco is an economically important crop for many nations—about 2 million tons of unmanufactured tobacco leaves, at a value of about $6,500 per ton, are exported each year worldwide. Brazil leads in exports, with about 15 percent of the total, followed closely by the United States, with about 11 percent of the total. The United States exports the most cigarettes and other manufactured tobacco products. Of the approximately 635 billion cigarettes made in the United States in 1999, about one-fourth were exported.
Despite all this there may still be faith for some who want to quit. Studies of ex-smokers show that their risk of dying from smoking-related disease decreases with each year of abstinence. Smokers who quit before the age of 50 reduce their risk of life-threatening disease by half compared with those who continue smoking. Since the surgeon general’s report in 1964, the proportion of males who smoke has decreased from more than 50 percent to about 28 percent while the percentage of women who smoke has fallen from about 34 percent to 23 percent. Today, about 44 million Americans have quit smoking cigarettes.
The question to be addressed is what can be done to motivate healthy behavior. Hypocrisy manipulations have been used in the past to decrease the frequency of unwanted behaviors. Hypocrisy manipulations promote behavior change because they motivate a person to think about their inconsistencies.
In light of the disease risks associated with tobacco products and their associated high health-care costs, many individuals and health organizations have lobbied for public policy changes that would change the way tobacco products are regulated, manufactured, marketed, and sold in the United States. In November 1998 the tobacco industry and the attorneys general of 46 states, along with representatives of the public health field and lawyers representing smokers, announced an agreement that bans outdoor cigarette advertising and the use of cartoon characters in advertising, a practice that may attract young people to smoking. The agreement also requires tobacco companies to pay $206 billion during the next 25 years to fund antismoking public education programs, smoking cessation programs, tobacco-related medical research, and reimbursement to states for some of the health-care costs associated with treating smokers.
Last but not least finally, in late 1999 Philip Morris, the nation’s largest cigarette maker, publicly acknowledged that smoking is addictive and causes serious health problems.
Answer: ''Tobacco industries direct 90% of recommendation their cigarette advertisements toward today's youth,'' This doesn't really make alot of sense, and ''Last but not least finally,'' should say ''Last but not least, finally''. (I moved the comma) Other than that this essay is really good!!!

Answer: Id say so! Go Obama!
Question: Carcinogenic substances in cosmetics? I lost my best friend to cancer in January this year, it has been a terrible time for everyone who loved her. Since then, I've been researching carcinogens to understand some of the causes of the illness - partly to understand prevention for myself and my loved ones.
I'm looking for further advice from health professionals and anyone out there who understands chemical substances.
After a bit of research, I've found that 'Triethanolamine' and '2 Bramo 2 Nitropropane 1 3' have been found to be carcinogenic if used long term. These substances are found in many hair and skin products still widely sold in the UK. These substances are in the process of being banned in many places in America and Europe, because of the carcinogenic risks. I live in th UK and am concerned about these chemicals in many, if not most of the products I go to buy. Can anyone give any reasurance or further information please. Many thanks.
Answer: I have also heard that many chemicals in cosmetics have been linked to cancer in HIGH doses. So, if there is a trace of a carcinogen in your lipstick, I don't think it will harm you.
I have heard about carcinogens mainly associated with dark hair dyes. Dark hair dye has been linked to certain cancers like lymphoma, but there is no definitive answer.
Unfortunately, I think that our risk of cancer is increased just from living - drinking chlorinated water, breathing dirty air, eat foods with hormones and pesticides.
My best advice for being healthy is to eat right, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, get regular checkups.
We all have stories like your friend. The sister of my best friend died from sarcoma after a bout with Hodgkins lymphoma. She was a vegetarian and exercise nut - sadly there was just something wrong with her genetic wiring.
I am sorry about your friend - I will keep her in my prayers.
Question: You are the newly appointed Minister of Heath, Vitality and Well Being. What are your first initiatives? Your country is riddled with lifestyle induced diseases like heart disease, some forms of cancer, obesity, diabetes 2, chronic fatigue, allergies, etc etc.
The cost of these diseases is costing your country millions of dollars annually and is crippling the economy due to high hospital expenditure and also lost productivity.
You have a meeting with your public service underlings to air your new directives.
With your new catchcry of "Prevention rather then Dubious Cure" you start to implement your innovations.
Some ideas for you to consider to get the ball rolling:-
*Double the tax on tobacco, alcohol, refined sugar products, bad fats(like cottonseed and other hydrogenated oils), and gasoline.
*Compulsory boot camps for obese people
* Subsidies to healthy food producers-eg fruit and vegetable growers
* Free land alloted to community fruit and vegetable gardens
* Kick out McDonalds, KFC and other junk food places
Ok your turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Answer: Well it all comes down to obesity.
1) Being a slim person myself, I have always wanted to see clothes priced according to the amount of material used. The prices should increase steeply for each extra size up.
2) I would include a person's body weight in the baggage allowance on flights.
3)Anyone over a certain size should have to pay for two seats on public transport, in cinemas, restaurants, etc.
4) The distance from the supermarket to the car park should be at least half a mile, except for disabled people.
5) Similarly, there should be at least half a mile between the school and the school gates.
6) I would ban drive throughs.
7) Since our healthcare system in the UK is provided by the state from public money, everyone has an equal entitlement to healthcare. But because people are not paying for their care directly, I do not think they have a right to demand a certain treatment when there are better options available. If someone doesn't follow advice to lose weight, I don't think they should move up the next level of treatment.
8) I would train a new generation of specialist obesity dieticians - I have seen amazing results in terms of weight and self-confidence from sessions with dieticians.
9) I would enforce an existing UK law which is currently ignored - that it is illegal to sell alcohol to anyone obviously intoxicated. You should have to pass some kind of breath test to buy a drink if you look drunk.
Question: Different kinds of genes? A hox gene is
a) a gene whose function is to cause cancer
b) a gene stimulating cell division
c) a tumor-suppressor gene
d) a gene that regulates formation of body regions
An oncogene is
A) a gene stimulating cell division
B) a tumor-suppressor gene
C) a gene that controls axis formation
D) a gene that regulates formation of body regions
Gene regulation in anabolic pathways (synthesizing molecules) typically has which of the following
a) Repressible operon (repressed by product)
b) Constant gene expression
c) a high degree of determination
The cortical reaction in a sea urchin egg performs which function?
a) immediate prevention of polyspermy
b) long term prevention of polyspermy
c) Activation of developmental genes
Answer: A hox gene is
d) a gene that regulates formation of body regions.
An oncogene is
A) a gene stimulating cell division (among various other possible functions of an oncogene).
Gene regulation in anabolic pathways (synthesizing molecules) typically has which of the following
a) Repressible operon (repressed by product). If product is around, it's a waste of energy to be synthesizing the enzymes required to make it.
The cortical reaction in a sea urchin egg performs which function?
b) long term prevention of polyspermy. Immediate prevention of polyspermy is caused by a change in polarity when a sperm binds the ovum.
Question: Fire safety cigarettes are poison? I've been smoking 30 years. I live in Arizona where we just started getting Fire Safety Cigarettes.
For three weeks I was constantly getting ill, and having never heard of fire safe cigs, had no idea why. I immediately noticed my cigs (Marlboro reds) kept going out, not in a few minutes, more like every 30 seconds, Very annoying.
My dad a 50 year smoker called me one day to say his cigarettes, (Marlboro Light 100's), kept going out, and tasted awful. So I e-mailed Phillip Morris asking "What's going on"?. I googled, 'Marlboros keep burning themselves out'. I was appalled at what I saw. Web sites, blogs, and forums abounded with smokers complaining about getting sick from smoking these FSC cigarettes.
I couldn't believe our government would force a product on its citizens that were making smokers across the country sick. Didn't anyone bother too do some research on the health impact of these new 'safer' (not) cigarettes?
I immediately went to my vendor, and after searching there inventory found and bought five cartons of regular not FSC cigarettes, (labeled above the bar code). Within two days of smoking regular Marlboro's my illnesses subsided, and after a week I felt like my old self again.
Now I will have to start buying them online from companies in North Carolina, a state that still offers regular cigarettes that don't make me sick. After that I will buy them from Russia if I have too, or search out a black market, as I'm sure they will be popping up real soon.
Fire prevention agencies claim it will save 700 to 1,000 lives per year. New York Department of State did a study in New York State, a state which has mandated FSC for four years now, and found that deaths did drop from 31 deaths to 22 deaths in 2004.
Harvard School of medicine said that five compounds in the FSC cigarettes had increased in toxicity, but there was no evidence that these increases affect the already toxic nature of cigarette smoke.
OH REALLY, then why am I finding smokers all over the internet complaining they're getting sick? , I know they made me sick.
Those entities that are pushing this garbage on us didn't even have the courtesy to tell us smokers what they were doing.
These 'speed bump rings' that are incorporated into the paper, has increased amounts of a glue produced by DuPont used to adhere carpet, and is very toxic, (Adhesive ethylene vinyl acetate).
First our government unjustly targets smokers with a huge tax burden of 500% the past ten to fifteen years, now there going to poison us.
Did I mention the taste? These RSC taste terrible, another factor I’m reading from smokers across the country online. The amber or (cherry) at the end of the cigarette doesn't burn the same and allows too much air to mix with the smoke, and you can't get enough taste. So you end up drawing on them repeatedly trying to get a good full drag. You end up with uneven burning and ambers falling all over the place. Seems to me this is going to cause 'More Fire Hazard'. Also the constant relighting causes the paper to ignite into a real flame, and has even blown up in my face, and I only smoked a few packs of them.
New York States 2004 study claims nine lives were saved. Nation wide that would be 450 lives per year, less than the number of people a 'month' who die from tripping and falling down. But it's okay to make thousands of smokers’ nationwide sick. How many smokers a year will die now from the higher toxicity in the paper, only time will tell…
If we allow these non smoking advocates to 'dictate' what we consume, were will it end?
There's still as many non smokers dying each year of lung cancer and heart disease as smokers, considering the high levels of pollution in our cities nationwide. Maybe next they'll blame smokers for that too.

Answer: I'm sorry, but I ill have to agree with Harvard that there is no proven effect that it's more harmful than the other chemicals in it. Yes it may make it taste different, but that is just one of the side effects of it.
As to why there are hundereds of sick smokers complaining online, it is well proven medical fact, as well as both common knowledge and common sense, that smoking is bad for you. It can cause so many conditions I couldn't list them all here.
However, unless we have more information about what you mean by being "ill" I'm afraid we can't really give a proper diagnosis.
Question: Christians and Atheists, pro lifers and pro choicers, would you unite ? if the demand for abortion was virtually eliminated? When I was in the USAF stationed in Germany, the apothecaries (drug stores) sold these reusable devices, electric, to women to test their urine to see if they were potentially fertile. These devices were 99.9% accurate, you only needed to use them if you were going to have sex; they were small and portable, and 100% safe; no blood clots, no risk of stroke or cancer, and the abortion rate was almost zero. In fact, the German government was so concerned about the negative population growth, they were offering couples tax and financial incentives to have children.
We in the US cannot buy these devices because pharmaceutical companies that manufacture birth control pills and other birth control pharmaceuticals and devices would go out of business, so they lobby and do their handshake deals, buy up the technology so it never reaches the US market. We do have a similar product on the market, a one time use, disposable test marketed to women who want to become pregnant, but it is to cost prohibitive to use as a birth prevention method.
So my question is, pro lifers, are you so committed to stopping abortion, would you find a way to get this device on the US market?
Pro choicers, I know that even though you are pro choice, you'd rather prevent the pregnancy in the first place, so would you work with the pro lifers and help get this on the market? Is it worth abandoning the animosity, the difference of belief and opinion, and preventing these pregnancies in the first place? It's not even a method of birth control that the church can argue with, since there is no harm to any fertilized egg.
Here's one that's marketed in the US, but it tests saliva, and you hae to test daily to get a chart, and again, it's marketed to people who want to conceive, not as a birth preventive method: http://www.craigmedical.com/Ovu_Cue.htm#AVAILABILITY

Abortion in Belgium is legal, in Brasil it isn't. Yet, the abortion rate in Belgium is 5 times lower than in Brasil.
Belgium has very open-minded sex education. And that's the only thing that will really lower abortion rates. If we educate kids, in a sane way, about safe sex, and about all the emotions involved, then they're prepared to have sex in a safe manner.
Oddly enough, the pro-life movement is usually also a very firm supporter of abstinence-only sex education. They want lower abortion rates, and support abstinence-only education which is proven to lead to higher abortion rates.
