Carbohydrates
Question: Carbohydrates?;;;;;;!? Carbohydrates?
Some diets like the Atkins diet severely limit the intake of carbohydrates, but allow food thats are high in fat and protein. What changes would such a diet cause in the metabolism of the dieter?
Answer: Carbs are your energy, so anything high in carbs gives you energy if you dont use that energy it turns into fat. so by limiting the carbs you are forcing your body to use up body fat for energy, so thats how you lose the weight by burning and running on your own body fat. While on this kinda diet you feel hungry but your not, it is just that you are not having much carbs that your body thinks you need, but you dont when you have so much body fat to run off of. But when you lose the weight, then start eating more carbs but still try to limit them otherwise you will be right back to where you started. Hope that helped. Question: What kind of carbohydrates do plants use to store energy? What kind of carbohydrates do plants use to store energy?
-What kind of carbohydrates do animals use to store energy?
-What type of carbohydrate is the main component of the cell walls in plants?
-What is the monomer (molecule that acts as a unit) of proteins?
Answer: plants store energy as starch
animals store energy as glycogen
the carbohydrate that constitutes the plants cell wall is cellulose
the monomer for proteins is amino acids
Question: What characteristic of carbohydrates is not commonly found in the previously studied classes of compounds? A. Carbohydrates are unique in that they do not contain any
nitrogen.
B. Carbohydrates often contain a functional group on each
carbon.
C. The carbohydrate class is the only class composed
solely of cyclic compounds.
E. There is more than one correct response.
Answer: E (well technically it is supposed to be D) There is more than one correct response.
Choices A and B are correct
Choice A is correct because carbohydrates do not contain nitrogen -- they only contain carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen.
Choice B is correct because carbohydrates usually contain a functional group such as ketones, aldehydes, or hydroxy groups on each carbon.
Question: How are carbohydrates synthesised and what codes for them? I have been reading a lot about carbohydrates and how they are critical in cell-to-cell recognition and tagging of enzymes to go into lysosomes and so on. However, I wonder how do get into the cells in the first place? Proteins are coded for by the genetic code in our DNA but what of carbohydrates? DO we just ingest them and incorporate them into our cells? I am rather confused as to their apperance on our cells.
Answer: people don't make carbohydrates plants and other photosynthetic organisms make carbohydrates. we just ingest them and break them down
Question: What two general functions do carbohydrates carry out in cells? This question is for a biology class I am taking, but I can't seem to really answer it right. What I think it might be is that carbohydrates energize us and sends sugar to the bloodstream, but I'm not too sure of that answer because the question asks what do carbohydrates do for our CELLS. Please answer if you can, thanks.
Answer: Carbohydrates primarily store energy.
In plants they form complex polymers that provide essential support.
Sugars can also be included as a base for essential molecules like DNA and RNA, ribose and deoxyribose are both five carbon sugars.
Question: How many carbohydrates should I consume if I want to lose weight? I weigh193 and have been losing weight steadily over the past 6 months. I have lost a total of 40 pounds. I started eating a diet very low in carbohydrates (20-30). Should I continue eating this few?
Answer: Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

Question: What are good vegetarian sources of carbohydrates and proteins for infants? My son is now almost 11 months old and prefers eating dairy products and fruits. I'm trying to introduce him to rice and potatoes. He doesn't seem to like rice pasta or potatoes in any form.Does anyone know alternate carbohydrate and protein sources. Plus any secret recipes that have worked well to make your young ones eat those carbohydrates up?
Many thanks.
Answer: I like the Morningstar Farms/Boca "chicken" nuggets. They're so much healthier than real chicken, and young kids love them. They're really soft and easy to chew, so a young toddler will be able to eat them without a problem. And sooo easy and quick to prepare.
Also raw or cooked soybeans-They taste kind of sweet, so kids will be more likely to eat them than some other veggies. Mashed potatoes are good-If your son won't eat them, you could try adding a crop of food coloring to make them more "fun." That always worked for my son. Cut up cheese is good as well.
Once he turns 12 months, you'll be able to give him whole milk, which is a great source of protein.
Question: Carbohydrates are a key source of energy for living things. Starting with the simplest sugars, describe? Carbohydrates are a key source of energy for living things. Starting with the simplest sugars, describe how carbohydrates become more complex.
Answer: The simplest sugars are called monosaccharides (monomers). When carbohydrates become more complex monomers are connected to become polysaccharides (polymers). The reaction that produces polysaccharides is called a polymerization reaction; more specifically a dehydration synthesis or condensation reaction. A dehydration synthesis reaction is when the hydroxyl groups from two different carbohydrates react to produce a glycosidic linkage and water. A new molecule is synthesized and dehydrated, dehydration synthesis get it? Dehydration reactions are used through out your entire body to produce polymers, for example amino acids into proteins, connecting nucleotides into nucleic acids, synthesis of triglycerides.
Question: What's the difference between complex carbohydrates and simple sugars? Aren't they basically the same and make you gain weight? Why do some people think complex carbohydrates or starches are good for you while simple sugars or simple carbohydrates are not?
Answer: Both have the same amount of calories (4 per gram of carbohydrate) but their nutritional value is very different. Complex carbohydrates are what you find in whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat, quinoa, etc), beans/legumes, vegetables.
Complex carbohydrates are better for you, and are an essential part of your diet, because foods with complex carbs have high amounts of fiber in them, which improves digestion. Foods that are more digestible have their nutrients better absorbed into the body and give you better energy. Foods with complex carbohydrates also have more protein.
Simple carbohydrates include fruit, which should be a part of your diet as well. Foods with lots of added sugar, like cake, candy, soda and honey, have little nutritional value and are likely to make you gain weight.
Don't be afraid of carbohydrates, your body needs them to function properly.
Question: Does simple carbohydrates still work to fuel the body? I have ate a lot of brown rice today and i dont want to cook any more pastas or anything but does simple carbohydates still work to fuel the body? Ive been trying to read online and all they say about simple carbohydrates is that its bad for u and etc. I don't care about the calories or getting fatter because i have a sport event that i need energy for. So does simple carbohydrates still help give u more energy?
Answer: Yeah definitely. Think about Gatorade or Powerade.
Question: How many carbohydrates are there in a Kebab? I have type 1 Diabetes and I have recently started counting my carbohydrates. Does anyone know roughly how many carbohydrates are in a Kebab?
Answer: It all depends on what you put on your kebabs.
What is the meat marinaded in?
Are there peppers or tomatoes on the kebab?
Onions, mushrooms, and other low-carb vegetables shouldn't add carbs at all.
Good luck!
Question: Why should the two kinds of carbohydrates differ in this regard? One piece of advice that nutritionists give today is to favor complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole grain bread, over simple carbohydrates, such as those found in soft drinks. One reason for this is that simple sugars result in "spikes" in blood sugar levels, while some complex carbohydrates do not.
Why should the two kinds of carbohydrates differ in this regard?
Answer: complex carbs are harder to breakdown so they take longer. they leave you feeling full longer so you don't eat as much in addition to not gettting those blood sugar spikes.
Question: How to cut out some carbohydrates without feeling tired or hungry? I already eat pretty healthy and rarely have junk food.. but I do love my carbs. I love all kinds of cereal, bagels, pastas, whole wheat breads, muffins etc. They are my weakness. How can I cut my carbohydrates intake in half but still feel satisfied throughout the day? Also, will I start having massive cravings and then binge? Because if I will, then I definitely won't try this!
Answer: Carbs contribute most of the calories in your body. At the same time you need constant supply of energy for sustenance. If you use any appetite suppressant like Phentramin-D you can prevent yourself from eating too much carbs. http://p.gs/y3x9g
Phentramin-d diet pills supply you with the energy and helps with your metabolism to burn fats faster.
Question: What is the difference between carbohydrates and calories you guys? What is the difference between carbohydrates and calories you guys?
Answer: Carbohydrates:
Mainly sugars and starches, together constituting one of the three principal types of nutrients used as energy sources (calories) by the body. Carbohydrates can also be defined chemically as neutral compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Calorie:
A unit of food energy. In nutrition terms, the word calorie is used instead of the more precise scientific term kilocalorie which represents the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a liter of water one degree centigrade at sea level. The common usage of the word calorie of food energy is understood to refer to a kilocalorie and actually represents, therefore, 1000 true calories of energy. A calorie is also known as cal, gram calorie, or small calorie.
Hopefully that cleared the things up for you.
Question: Carbohydrates 4 Diabetes: How does one determine the appropriate amount? My diabetic is reconfiguring his diet. So how do we figure out how much carbohydrates he should consume daily?
Answer: you don't mention type 1 or 2 this is for 2
*try cutting out all processed food, and refined sugars. carbs in moderation can be consumed, its highly processed foods that are the bigger problem.
*cut out bread and processed wheat, you can still have basic pita or rice/corn flat bread.
instead of bread crumbs, blitz rolled oats in the blender. have corn thin sandwiches
*choose lean meats, protein is important, fat is not.
*stay away from starchy foods, no more potato, you can however eat sweet potato, no starch, anywhere you would put potato replace with sweet potato.
*lots of fresh veges and salad, be careful not to eat excess fruit though can make your sugar levels jump quickly.
*try to eat only low gi foods
*start taking an omega supplement (i would recommend flax-seed oil, twice as much omega as fish oil and it comes in the organic version) this will replace some of the bad cholesterol (which will then be expelled from your body) and will hopefully ward off cardiavasular disease for longer, not to mention its great for cell recovery and proper function.
the studies i have looked at basically say the people who ate mainly wholefoods (raw where possible, unprocessed, how they are in nature) didn't need to measure how much food they where consuming. where the people eating processed food, have huge portion controls.
hope this helps.
Question: What is the role between carbohydrates and insulin in regards to weight gain? What is the role between carbohydrates and insulin in regards to weight gain?
Answer: insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to detected increases in blood sugar - insulin controls glucose homeostasis (i.e., keeps blood glucose levels constant) by stimulating the uptake of glucose into skeletal muscle and, to a lesser extent, into liver (e.g., in the case of fructose) and adipose tissue.
In laymen's terms - it is essentially responsible for storing away the latent energy in the calories you consume. insulin drives glucose into your cells - it feeds your muscles as it were.
Foods that are high on the glycemic index (e.g., dextrose, or other "simple" carbs) stimulate a strong spike in insulin - "spike" just means that insulin levels rise and fall rapidly (good for a quick burst of energy but not for sustained endurance). Foods lower on the glycemic index (e.g., so-called complex carbs) stimulate a much slower insulin response allowing for a sustained release of energy.
Generally speaking - bodybuilders desire an insulin spike only after a workout (they generally combine simple sugars with Protein) because they want the insulin surge to "feed" their muscles as quickly as possible (trying to use laymen's terms here!).
