Colic
Question: colic????????? is it possible have colics when your 15 years old?
because i have a sharp pain in my chest when i breath out.
what is the cure?
Answer: You might have pleurisy which is an infection in the lining of your lung. Pleurisy can cause pain in one or all of these: chest, back, shoulder. It can hurt when you take a deep breath, cough, or laugh, or even just regular breathing. If you do have pleurisy you will need an antibiotic so you'll have to go the doctor. If it's not treated it can get worse. If you're doctor is not sure he/she can do an x-ray to confirm. Pleurisy sounds and feels worse than it really is.....I went to the hospital it hurt so bad, but antibiotic will clear it right up.
It's not colic...tha't for babies who are extremely fussy, gassy, and cry ALOT.
Also if you have pain or wheezing when breathing out especially with coughing, then you might have asthma. It's hard to say for sure. Best thing to do is go to doctor if it continues or gets worse.
Question: What can you do to reduce colic in a newborn? I'm a young mom and I'm expecting in December. I want to do the best I can to keep my baby happy and healthy, so is there any tips and remedies that I can use to prevent colic in my baby? Or will the baby just be born with it, regardless of what you try. I understand that not every baby has colic, but I'm just preparing in case it does.
Thanks!
Answer: Colic is when babies cry uncontrollably for 3 or more hrs, 3 or more times a day. In some cases colic is actually reflux, gas, milk allergy, or sensitive to formula or breastmilk, which in the latter case would likely be an upset tummy from something you ate that affected your breast milk (like spicy foods, onions, garlic, tomato, dairy)
Tips to help prevent colic:
Burp baby well
Invest in bottles that help prevent gas
Swaddle baby
Don't let baby get too worked up before a feeding
Tips to treat colic:
Swaddle baby
Gas drops
Hold baby belly to belly, the warmth of your body will help
White noise sound machine
Question: What are the chances of your horse getting colic? I am trying to make a chart of the chances of a horse breaking its leg, getting colic, ect... and I would like to know what the chances are of your horse getting colic. If it helps, I live in Wisconsin in case that has anything to do with it. Thanks!
Answer: There is no percentage chart for a horse getting colic. I have two at ages 22 and 16 that have never got colic and 2 at ages 27 and 16 that have colicked several times.
There are multiple factors besides changes in diet that can bring on colic.
One is pain. If a horse has an foot abcess or teeth problems that go untreated, that chronic pain can tense the horse enough to colic. So you may see the colic signs before you recognize the fact that there is an underlying pain.
Another is sand in the diet from grazing on that kind of terrain.
Also poor worming routines.
Another is stress. Long trailerings. Different water consumption. Horse shows when they are taken away from home. Extreme exercise variations.
And some horses just do it without any causes that we can see from the outside.
The main thing when you have a horse is to be diligent about ANY changes with that horse. Always keep a relaxant/pain killer like banamine on hand. It can only be administered once if you expect colic. If the horse doesn't improve and you see signs of distress again 4 hours later, you have a serious case. Watch a horse in distress...going off feed or hay, sweating, looking repeatedly at its stomach, wanting to drop to the ground and roll over and over. Listen for proper stomach gurgling. Check for stool droppings and gas.
Frequently, if you have what we call "gas colic" you can walk them out of it. Just gentle motion moves the digestive system enough to expel the problem. Take them for a walk.
We use hills. Then turn the horse loose in the pasture and when they move back to be with the herd, the normal body movement often shakes loose the problem. You will know right away because they will grab grass or hay again. Someone posted that they asked their horse to easily jump a hay bale to do the same thing. Please know the difference between this mild exercise and forcing a horse on its feet and working it into a sweat or lungeing or any other extreme thing with a colicky horse.
Another thing is use a soft curry brush to rhythmically work the sides of the horse in the lower abdomen. Like you if you have a stomach ache, the rubbing can move things along.
If these things do not solve gas colic within a few minutes, we do banamine to relax the system and take away the pain. Almost all of the time, that helps the horse along. This would NOT solve a problem with an impacted horse or one that has twisted. Which is why you only give one dose. If after the dose wears off you still have a horse in colic pain, you absolutely need the vet.
Usually, if no impaction or twist is suspected, the vet will administer oil and water to help flush the system along with any drugs they feel will help.
Your chart may be for a school or 4-H project. I'd switch from a graph of percentages to columns of how to help avoid it and columns of things you can do to help them get through it before the vet comes. Add some photos if it is a poster demonstrating techniques.
Question: What colic remedy did you use that worked best for your baby/babies? I was just wonder what colic remedy you used that worked best for your baby/babies? I would appreciate any suggestions. Please no answers about breast feeding or breast milk. Thanks.
Answer: infants friend colic drops. they work wonders =) good luck, there al natural ingredients too =)
Question: What is the best proven way to prevent sand colic in horses? my horse had to have surgery and almost died from sand colic, he eats his hay and feed elevated off the ground in his pasture, takes sand colic supplements and psyllium weekly. i dont know what else to do besides relocate him to a different state.
Answer: Those are the same things that I do, and I've had good results. Is he pastured? Maybe there's a lot of sand in the pasture that he's able to pick up as he's grazing.
Question: How do the anti-colic bottles work? I have a 6 day old baby boy and we're finding out that he prefers the MAM anti-colic bottles over any other bottle. I was just curious as o how the whole venting thing works and how does it reduce colic?? Thanks!
Answer: With regular bottles as the baby drinks air enters the bottle from around the nipple to replace the milk baby drank this causes bubbles in the milk so baby swallows more air. With the mam bottle as baby drinks the air enters the bottle from the bottom so it doesn't mix with the milk.
Question: How much does it cost for a colic surgery? I am worried that if my horse gets colic, we might not have enough money to pay for it. Can someone give me a price range please!? Thanks!
Answer: it can be VERY expensive for colic surgery. look into getting your horse insured or putting him/her on Strongid daily dewormer they have a program where if your buy Strongid from you vet and keep them UTD on shots and stuff you can enroll your horse in their Preventicare program and if your horse needs colic surgery they will cover up to $5000 for it. here's the site look into it. Also make sure to do lots of reading and research on how to take care of your horse properly to prevent colic... simple things like deworming and feeding free choice hay reduce your horses risks of colic.

Question: How did colic go for you that had colicky babies? My 7 week old has been diagnosed with reflux, but they said it could also simply be colic (he doesn't spit up, so it's a little sketchy). Anyhow, he cries around mealtimes and it gets worse in the evenings. Occasionally, he cries basically all day. Did your colicky babies cry only in the evenings, or did they cry much of the day? He seems to be getting less fussy now, but last week it was ridiculous.
Answer: My second son had colic and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! It was non-stop crying all day and all night for almost a year....at least 8 months. I know he was already standing up and trying to walk before it went away...and that was at 10 months. He was a formula baby and I ended up having to put him on a special formula that was almost $30 a can (Enfamil Nutramigen) and I bought him Dr. Brown's bottles and invested in milicon drops. The mix of those 3 seemed to help a lot but not completely...at least enough that I could get a good 30 minute nap in between episodes. Also...when your baby is able to drink juice, avoid apple juice....it makes previously colicky babies fussy again. It's pretty much a trial and error on what works and what doesn't.
Question: What medications or natural remedies are there for colic? We have tried many of the "manuvers" to help with colic like putting her on her tummy, and walking. She is breast fed so formula isn't the issue. We have addressed my diet and hydration.
I have seen a few posts here for different medication but what else is out there and how well does it work?
Answer: I feel for you! My baby cried from 6-11 pm every single night and there was absolutely nothing I could do for her, even the doctor said so. I just sat there and held her. She cried for hours in my arms for the first 3 months of her life. Buy ear plugs and hold your baby alot. If you can't help her with the colic, just hold her and let her know you are there for comfort. You can do soothing things like rocking, but that really didnt help in my situation.
Question: What can I feed a horse with minor colic? I just now gave the last little bit of my Alfalfa cubes to my other horse while my dad was walking my horse that seems to have a minor case of colic. I don't want to leave him hungry so I need to know what I can feed him to tide him over for the night until the morning.
Any help would be awesome! Thanks.
Also, how long should we walk them around?
Answer: Depends on what type of colic... gas or impaction? You won't know til you call a vet. And the LAST thing you want to do is feed him anything bulky, let alone any food at all.. If is is impaction, you will compound the problem. You really need not walk him around, just don't let him roll. Let him walk as he will on a line. IF you must feed him anything, a bran mash would help , in moderation. NO grain. If you have mineral oil you can try and get some down him via a syringe or baster.
As for the alfalfa cubes, do you soak them? Cubes are made for cows, not horses, so you need to moisten them or beat em into smaller pieces. Dry cubes can cause horses to colic.
Him not eating for the night will not hurt him. If you call the vet, they should give an emergency number. You should be able to call the vet and let him know what is going on. They will usually give advice over the phone.
I wish you the best with your horse and I hope he is going to be ok. But I would call the vet. Colic is serious.
Here is more info for you.
Guess it would help if I gave you the site!! http://www.ehow.com/how_2310966_treat-colic-horse.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art
Question: What's the difference between colic and gas? They say that in order for a baby to have colic they cry endlessly...
However, my baby doesn't cry, rather she makes pushing noises and gets red in the face then I bring her legs up to her chest and she lets out lots of gas, and sometimes poops...
So if she gas lots of gas and doesn't cry, then it's not the same as Colic is it?
No, she's not constipated. She has loose stools because I breastfeed.
She does poop normally, and her poop is watery and yellow mustard color.
She is EXCLUSIVELY breastfed.
Answer: well it sounds like she has bad gas or she is constipated. I used some gas drops called Little Tummies Gas Drops By Little Remedies. or you can also try the colic drops they also help with gas. And as for the constipation, if you feed her formula try changing to liquid ready made formula , the powder one tends to cause constipation. Or you can try to give her chamomile tea with no sugar or honey, if you want to go the natural way.
Question: What's the difference between Grip water and Colic drops? What's the difference between Grip water and Colic drops? They smells similar. Can we feed our baby both? Thanks!
Answer: Gripe water is made from herbs such as dill, ginger, and anise as well as sodium bicarbonate.
Some, but not all, colic drops are gripe water. The rest are a silicone derivative (simethicone)
Gripe water treats stomach upset, simethicone prevents gas bubbles from forming in the stomach.
You can combine simethicone with gripe water but not gripe water with gripe water.
Question: Can a baby without colic or reflux be given Alimentum formula? A friend of mine is in desperate need to formula for her son and I have a bunch of cans from my son, but her son doesn't have reflux or colic. Can he still be feed this formula? I hate to throw it away, it was really expensive and I cannot find anyone who needs it.
Answer: yes,,,,i had twins that were on this milk. i breastfed for 3 weeks and ran out,,,after going to formula my daughter had an awful time of it. being that there were twins,,,our dr put them BOTH on it to avoid the risk of my daughter getting milk that wasnt "hers"....it helped her tremendously and the dr said it would NOT hurt my son one bit. there was more risk in having 2 different milks and the risk of HER gettin the wrong one than him gettin the alimentum. there should be NO problem with handing down the milk.
Question: Any tips for helping my babies colic please? My baby boy is 6 weeks old this Wednesday. For the last 2 weeks his colic has got gradually worse, despite using anti colic bottles and using infacol or gripe water. Through the day he is so content, but at 6 pm on the dot he starts grizzling and this develops into inconsolable crying until at least 11pm. Then he has his midnight feed and everything goes back to normal?! How long did colic last in your experience and what worked for your baby? Thanks.
Answer: Every child is different but here is my story. My baby is now 15 weeks and I went through this from around 3 weeks. We tried Infocol but he screamed so much when we gave it to him, he put more air in his stomach. When he got older we tried gripe water too, it worked for a while then it came back. The best advice I can give is to massage his to stomach in a circular motion with 2 fingers clockwise, then pump his legs. Hold his ankles and then push he leg up bending his knees so they touch his stomach and his feet are next to his bum. Do this around 20 times. At first he will be stiff, but he will soon get use to it. I done this everytime I changed him and it made a real difference. He still some has problems sometime and I do the same thing and he actually passes wind whilst I'm doing this. I really hope this helps as I know what your going through.
Question: How to tell if it is really colic? My 4 wk old daughter is very fussy. The dr changed her formula to Alimentum because she said she has colic behavior. Well from what I've read about colic, the babies usually cry around the same times every day. My baby has some days were she won't fuss at all and then some days she fusses off and on all day. Like yesterday she cried from 2:30pm until 7pm and then again from 3am until 8am this morning. But some days she will cry from 9-11pm and some days not at all. Does anyone think this is symptomatic of colic or could there be some other issue? I give her mylicon drops and sometimes they work and sometimes not.
Answer: Colic is defined as unexplained crying for at least 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for at least 3 weeks. If that describes your daughter, then, yes, she has colic.
Does she cry even when you hold her and nurse her? Then it's *not* colic; it's loneliness. Colic is *always* crying for no obvious reason.
Question: What are the best bottles for reducing colic? My son is 4 1/2 months old, and is quite the fussy one! Sometimes I wonder if he's colicy. Anyway, I bought those Playtex bottles with the drop in bags, because I heard that those were good. I don't know if it's the nipple or what, but he doesn't seem to like these new bottles.
What do you think are the best bottles for reducing colic?
Answer: my daughter had colic when she was a baby, and Dr. Brown bottles work great for us, but they are a pain to wash (due to the small pieces it come with ...) but worth a try if u have a colicky baby.
