Diet Myths
Question: Diet myths? 1. Is it true your metabolisiom is slower after 7pm?
2. Also is bad to eat 3 hours before you go to sleep?
3. (This is one my mother told me) You gain weight if you eat lying down?
Also what is the recommended glasses of water per day? I've been off pop for 25 days.
Answer: For the first 2 questions, it doesn't matter when you eat but how many calories your eat in a 24 hour period. There are times during the day where you may have less energy but that doesn't mean you have a slow or slower metabolism at those times.
Eating 2000 calories over 6 meals would be the same over 3 meals. If you're looking to lose fat, you need to cut your total daily caloric intake and eat better. You know...lower your intake of fat and carbs and don't forget to exercise.
Question: What are some popular exercise and diet myths?
Answer: Myth: All diets are equal
Fact: Low-carb is far more efficient at burning fat. For one thing, you have no glycogen stores so you start burning fat immediately when doing cardio. Each fat gram only gives you 7 calories of energy instead of 9. etc etc.
Question: Where do all these myths about the atkins diet come from? It's not a all steak diet for one thing, and i hear that after you lose weight in the first 2 weeks you change to a steady balanced phase. Also you are required to eat 4 cups of salad and veggies in the induction phase even. And you avoid trans fats. Some fats are allowed but no more than 1/5 of your calories intake.
Answer: There are a lot of people with a vested interest in putting down Atkins and other low-carb diets.
People who have spent their lives promoting a "healthy" low-fat, grain-based diet and don't want to admit now that they were wrong.
Companies who produce processed food, mostly full of starches, grains and sugars - all things that people following a healthy low-carb diet will not eat (buy).
Animal rights groups, such as PeTA (and their front group, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), who simply don't want people to eat animal products.
Then there's the media, that simply keeps repeating the same old stuff over and over again, without actually checking facts.
Question: bad diet myths disproved and now good for you? Now that it has been proved that fried eggs and cheese are good for blood pressure and preventing heart disease ( I have been eating a fried egg and cheese sandwich every day for at least 25 years and been constantly told it was bad for me) Isn't it about time we ignored these so called food experts and just ate what we like instead. As long as some exercise is taken I can't see what harm you can do yourself.Any other so called bad habits that are now good does anybody know about
Answer: *cough*Wrong category*cough*
Question: List 3 myths associated with diet and exercise and explain why each myth is not true?
Answer: 1. Eating after "x" time of day causes you to get fat.
It's not when you eat but what you eat and in what quantity. the metabolic rate actually increases during the 1st sleep cycle then steadily declines lower and lower until it reaches it's lowest point right before awakening. the amount of muscle mass that a person has determines the decrease from the resting to sleeping metabolic rate. the more muscle mass that a person has the less of a decrease there is from the RMR to the SMR.
2. leg lifts, bicycle kicks, etc. target the lower abdominals.
there are no lower abdominals. muscles either contract as a whole or not at all. because of this it's physiologically impossible to target part of a muscle.
3. excess proteins get stored as fat.
the body does turn amino acids into glucose but not at a great enough rate to promote fat storage. 1 molecule of fat can generate 146 units of the cellular energy source ATP. an equivalent molecule of glucose will provide less units than that more like 120+ units of ATP. where as one gram of amino acids will provide 1 unit of ATP. the body expends more energy converting amino acids into a lipid then into ATP then it gets in return. the human body does not readily waste energy.
I highly doubt if anyone wanting to make money would invest $100 to get $1 in return, same principle.
Question: What are a few negative health myths about being on a Vegetarian diet?
Answer: Your hair will fall out.-----Um I still have all of my hair.
You need the protein in meat!----There are other sources of protein!
God put cows on the earth for us to eat and milk!---God put cows on earth so they could feed their babies with cows milk! Just like woman produce milk for their baby! I don't see you putting breast milk on your cheerios!
You need to take iron pills---My iron is actually higher than it has ever been, even when I was eating meat.
You will gain weight------after becoming vegetarian, I lost 40 pounds.
You will get bad breath------WHAT!?
Question: Diet myths for homework...any experience? I really need help...I'm thinking if I ask real people, the evidence will make a better paper. Has anybody ever heard of a diet that they have tried but didn't work at all? Or maybe helped you lose weight, but it made you exceedingly sick or unhealthy? I have to write a ten-page paper about it...I would appreciate some help!!
thanks guys!!
Answer: bulimia... >_>'
Question: Why Are These Diet/Fitness Myths So Popular ? How come more people are familiar with the myths than truth? How come the Atkin's diet is actually considered good? How come it is so popular that low weights and high reps actually tones you? How come I get thumbs-downs for the truth??? I'm pretty annoyed, that's why I'm asking...
Oh, of course, the ever popular myth, "eating after 7 p.m. makes you gain weight".
Lol Pat xD.
Folladj - Yes, low weights, high reps are a myth, they only increase endurance and completely fatigue slow-twitch muscle fibers.
As for pilates, the only way to reduce bodyfat (or tone) is through cardio, and most importantly a healthy diet. If the diet is healthy enough and low-calorie, you can usually get away with bad exercise in reducing bodyfat.
Also, those people may have done cardio, or already started off with a good amount of muscle, which helps burn bodyfat.
Answer: Because people are stupid. <-- Best Answer
Question: Which of these are diet myths? A. Vitamin supplements are better than real whole foods.
B. We must drink milk (3 cups) for our daily Vitamin D
C. fat-free, 0g trans fat, sugar-free are all indicators of a healthy product
Answer: A.
Most multivitamins and regular vitamins like Vitamin C are a hoax. They aren't approved by the FDA because they don't actually improve your health. Look it up in nytimes.com for articles on the issue.
B. Well if you get enough sunlight I guess you don't need this. People mostly drink milk for calcium, anyways, and you can find that in other places like broccoli, if you want to.
C. 0g transfat doesn't mean it's healthy. It could still contain more saturated fat than you would ever want, and 0g transfat doesn't necessarily mean 0. It just means less than 1.
Question: diet coke myths ???????? why do so many people come on here making false assumptions with no real proof of fact. i drank the kool-aid on the aspartame = cancer myth and switched back to regular coke. keep in mind i weighed 185 had perfect blood pressure and a lot more energy when i drank diet coke, but now i have gained 30 pounds in just 2 months of drinking just one can of regular coke with my lunch. i feel terrible weak, tired, hungry, irritated and my blood pressure went from 130/77 to 150/90, I felt so much better when i was drinking diet coke even if the accusations are true I 'll take my chances diabetes is worse and it runs in my family just after switching back to diet for 1 week i have already lost 5 pounds..
Answer: Yup, stay with the diet Coke. Just go on www.snopes.com and type in "aspartame" and you'll get a page full of myths that have long been debunked. I've been drinking mass quantities of aspartame for 25 years, and I'm doing just fine, thank you.

Question: Why do so many people fall for the diet soda myth? Everywhere I go shopping, I see people with carts full of diet soda and the rest of the stuff they buy is high fat foods. And or junk foods. Why do so many people do this? It just seems so pointless. Why not cut out ALL sugar, rather than artificial sweetener?Anyway it turns to formaldehyde in your blood.
Answer: Diet soda is just another scam to sell something to people as though it were a health drink. People fall for advertising scams all the time. It's funny when people order a big mac, fries and a diet coke. Totally pointless.
Question: The Atkins Diet: Facts and Myths? Well, I really like the atkins diet. And I sort of have an understanding how it works. I know how to be on it properly, but what happens? I know your body goes into ketosis and I know all of that. But if 3500 calories equals a pound, and you can eat however much 0 carb food you want on it, how come you lose weight instead of gaining weight?
Please tell me more I am a huge fan of this diet but I would like to know the truths about it and the things that are usually over exaggerated about it. Thanks!
Answer: Contrary to popular beliefs, The body does not follow logical mathematical equations. Metabolism is controlled by nutrition. You can't eat 600/1000/2000 calories of fruit and vegetables (pick a number, it doesn't matter - only the amount of fat stored changes) , your body will treat it as being starved (which it is, starved of nutrition) and will shut down your metabolism as if you're eating nothing, but will store every possible ounce as fat. You may lose water weight and the lean tissue the body has to strip for nutrition, but that just makes fat storage more efficient. Inversely, you wont gain weight on 5000 or more calories of fat & protein (if fat is 65% of calories) because insulin (the fat storage hormone) is not activated.
The body prefers to be fueled by carbohydrates because glucose is the bodies most efficient fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn't make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose.
The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of sufficient carbs (greater than 9grams per hour). The body will use excess fat stores for fuel but only if there is sufficient dietary fat. It's like the body says, ok more than sufficient fuel available, I can just use the fatty acids that have already been processed instead of having to convert this raw fuel.
Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.
The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).
It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.
Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin which can store the calories eaten into fat. The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.
Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & you can start making healthy choices.
High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase muscle mass with high HGH levels.
The video below shows Chris Gardner, Ph.D., researcher from Stanford University, giving a presentation about the data he generated when he compared the Atkins diet to the Ornish diet, the Zone diet and the LEARN diet.

Question: can someone straighten out my dieting myths? -do laxatives make you lse any real weight? like does any of the food actualy leav your system before its digested?
-are there REALLY negative calorie foods?
-if i only eat 1000 cals a day will i lose weight no matter what they are?
thank you have a nice day. and random question. do you have to get tape worms surgicly removed? thanks.
Answer: 1> No, laxatives might help by flushing the intestines a little but that about it. If you take too much it might flush some food before you've started digesting it but probably not.
2> Yes there are calorie negative foods that take more energy to burn than they contain. But they are likely man made.
3> You lose weight when you take in less calories than you burn. If you only burn 900 a day then you will get gain on 1000. If you burn 1500 and eat 1000 then you will actually start having health problems. Your body will go into starvation mode and being to consume your muscles for energy. You only want to eat 100-200 calories below the amount you burn.
4>I think there are some drugs that will kill tape worms but I don't really know.
Question: Does it take more calories to digest celery then is in the celery, or is it a diet myth? What do you think?
Answer: diet myth. Think about what little energy it takes to chew. But, I doubt if you ate only celery you'd get fat. So enjoy it.
Question: Is the 6 small meals a day diet a myth? I read that eating six small meals isn't any different than eating 3 large meals if both meal plans are the same amount of calories. Is this true?
Answer: 6 meals rather than 3 will also even your metabolism out over the course of the day.
