Distributor
Question: How to replace a distributor when the original rotor position is unknown? I have a 1989 5.0 Mustang that I had to pull the distributor to replace the Ignition Control Module. I was careful to mark the distributor's postion however I forgot to mark the rotor position within the distributor. Now I'm stuck. Can anyone give me a clue as to how to align the engine with the distributor enough to get it running so that I can fine tune the timing by twisting the distributor? Thanks.
Answer: Take out number one plug insert wire into cylinder rotate engine until wire is at highest point this is top dead center next find #1 wire in cap set rotor at that point if it does not start pull dist.and rotate 1/2 turn and it should start.
Question: How do I install my distributor and set my timing on my chevy 305? I recently rebuilt my chevy 305 tbi in my silverado. I made the mistake of not marking the distributor before i pulled it and now i don't know how it should be put back in. I know i have to have the 1st cylinder at tdc (atleast that's what i've been told) but i can't seem to find any markings on the distributor or the intake manifold to help me reinstall it. Also, I realize I'm going to need to use a timing light to get it adjusted right, but doesn't the engine have to be somewhat running to do this? Last question: In the very likely event that I can't get the distributor in right and it's a lost cause, do you know what it will cost (roundabout #) to have this done for me? Any help would be great. The more details the better!
Answer: Ouch. You will need to take the timing cover off, which takes some work, pulling the hamonic balancer and water pump. The cam gear and the crank gear will have a mark on it. Bump the engine until the cam and crank marks are together (crank mark up and cam mark down). Then install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to fire plug #1. This will be TDC. You may have to put a long screwdriver down the distributor hole to line up the slot on the oil pump rod with the pin in the bottom of the distributor. I don't know of an easier way of doing it.
Addition: After you have the distributor back in, the water pump and timing cover sealed up, put the balancer back on. Then yes you will have to fire the engine to set the timing. It's few hours worth of work to do this, but it's the only way I know.
Addition 2: If you haven't moved the oil pump shaft and feel that it's in the same position, try Jesse's answer before you rip the engine apart. If the shaft hasn't moved, you can luck out that way, which I hope you do, because my way is a fall back pain in the ass method. Most likely that method will work.

Question: Question about a distributor cap and the radiator? I took my 93 Corolla to get a new radiator. After the guy installed it, he cleaned the engine, but damaged the distributor because he said "there was a crack in the distributor cap," which caused the distributor itself to get wet. He now wants to charge me 300 dollars more to get a new distributor. Would this have caused the radiator to crack?
Answer: no this would not have caused the radiator to crack.....that probably happened due to a bad weld or metal fatigue....possibly the real culprit due to age....... or some other quality control issue at manufacture.
unless the distributor was immersed in water for an hour or so, and got soaked to the core.... he's just trying to rip you off.....distributors get wet all the time when it rains and you dirve in the rain....having a hood doesn't protect it from splash ups through the wheel wells and under the front valance.
typical used car mechanic trying to use the fact your car is old to try and dig a little deeper into your wallet. tell him to put a new distributor cap on (at his expense, he damaged it) and then drive off into the sunset as you give him the finger for being an idiot.
Question: Can a distributor's home swimming pool be a business expense for tax purposes? I am a distributor for fiberglass swimming pools. If I install one at my home and legitimently use it for demonstration purposes, is it tax deductable as a business expense.
Answer: probably not 100% if at all, since the IRS can claim it can be used for personal use as well as business - it might be similar to the home office deduction which require the room be used EXCLUSIVELY for business to get the deduction
Question: Will the distributor from a big block Chevy engine work on a small block? Just wondering if anyone had any insight on this. Would the distributor out of a big block (454) engine work in a small block (350) engine? Both are Chevrolet engines. I can't seem to find information on this elsewhere, so I thought I would ask the experts! Thanks for your time and knowledge.
Answer: Yes, they are the same.
Question: When changing a distributor cap do you have to disconnect the battery? On an 86 Toyota, do yoy have to disconnect the battery cable when changing the distributor cap and rotor?
Answer: You aren't planning on trying to change the cap while it is running I hope! The coil lead will bounce you on your butt. LOL!! There is no power running through the distributor while the engine is off, so you just pop the cap and change the rotor. To change the cap, move the wires one at a time so you don't get them out of order.

Question: what is a reliable distributor to order prescriptions from in canada? My insurance doesn't pay for BCP, it's about $70 a pack. I've seen a 6 month supply for $125 from canadian online pharmacies that will ship to the states (of course I need a valid prescription from my doctor still). I just want to be sure I choose a tried and true distributor before I start shelling out money across the border, just hoping for the best. Any advice is welcome, thanks!
Answer: Canada Drug has done well for me for several years.
Question: What is a normal finders fee for finding a distributor for a company? I run a business in the health food market. Recently an outsider helped us get in touch with a large distributor. This may lead to additional sales for us, and the person who got us in contact with the distributor is asking for a "finders fee". He wanted 20% of all future sales through the distributor, which is out of the question. Does anyone know what a standard finder's fee is?
Answer: In most cases finders fees for this type of situation would be negotiated before the exchange comenced. I take it this was more of an informal offering between you and the agent. It would be best in the future to have a system set in place to avoid ugly situations resulting from miscommunication or undefined roles.
These situations warrant different amounts and terms of monitory compensation. Some will be a one time fee paid, others a royalty based on the business volume. I used to be a manufacturers rep and had accepted payments in both forms.
I would look in the lines of 6% of the profit resulted directly from the sale through this distributor. I am basing this on the fact that you said it is a small company (assuming under 1 mil) and I am assuming this would represent no more than 15% of your total sales volume. The larger the percentage of volume and the larger the gross business profit from sales, the lower this number would go.
You could also offer a one time cash amount say 6-10% of projected 1st year gross sales through this distributor. The only issue here is that you will never see the money again if the terms with the new distributor fail in the future.
Without a good understanding of exactly what your market is and will bare, with hard numbers, I cannot be more specific. You can feel free to email me with a more detailed explanation of the situation and I will help further.

Question: What is the purpose of stabbing a distributor? This is automotive related. I heard if you installed a new distributor ignition system, you have to stab the distributor. I don't how to do it, please help me!
Answer: The purpose of this operation is to install the distributor such that it is engaged to the camshaft.
The trick is to get #1 cylinder in the TDC position. This can be accomplished by either lining up the timing mark (not easy) or looking at the valve positions for #1 cylinder.

Question: How do you align the distributor to the cam shaft? I am replacing the distributor on a 1996 Honda Odyssey. How do I align the new one with the cam shaft?
Answer: if you remove the cap before you remove the distributor, make a mark to where the rotor is. then unbolt and remove the distributor. align the marks to the new distributor and intsall your new distributor.
If you have already removed your distributor, this will be a bit harder. move your motor to TDC for the first cylinder. then using your cap to find the first cylinder's spark plug wire on the cap. install the new distirbutor with the rotor in the position of first cylinder spark plug wire.
