Question: Can you make egg salad with no yolks? I am a borderline vegan and I eat some dairy (yogurt with no gelatin, cheese with no rennet), and egg whites. I am not a fan of egg yolks, but i love egg salad and I was just curious if there is a way to make egg salad without using egg yolks. I should clarify, using egg whites from a carton.
Any recipe ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!
OMG the potatoes sound so good!
I can't wait to try them
Thanks!
Robalo, that sounds like a fantastic potato salad!
Thanks!
Answer: Indeed you can....
Obviously... boil the eggs, cool & peel.
Cut them in half - toss the yolk or give it to a family member....
Rince the cooked egg whites, pat dry and place them in a bowl.
Chop them up fine with a potato masher or knife....
Now... what I do for my veggie friends
I also boil red potatoes....but first I wash them well, & peel very little red skin off them.
I cook them until done. Cool them & quarter them.
I now toss them into the cooked egg whites.
I season them with.... "everything is fresh chopped"
Garlic
Onions
Pickels
Shreaded carrot
chopped celery
onion powder
garlic powder
oregano
fresh parsley
thyme
oil & vinegar
And that's it... let it get happy for about 1 hour in the fridge
Question: Can something like Egg Beaters egg whites be substituted for real egg whites in meringue mushrooms? I'm planning on trying my hand at meringue mushrooms for the holidays this year, and since I've never done it before, I thought I should ask: Will it work if I use egg-whites-in-a-carton (Egg Beaters or similar) or do I have to seperate real eggs to make them? (And on a side note, does anyone have a good recepie for spiced cashews/other nuts they'd be willing to share?) Thanks!
Answer: angel if you have egg whites, which they sell right next to the egg beaters, they will work . if you have egg beaters they won't.
Question: Why would an egg white be green? I was trying to make dip eggs, but the first egg I cracked into the pan seemed to have a green tint to it. I wasn't sure if it was just the pan through the egg or the egg, so I cracked a second one and it was clear like a normal egg. It doesn't smell rotten, and after cooking it it appears to be yellow now, and the other egg white is white. Both eggs are from my grandmother's chickens, and both had green egg shells. I've never noticed the inside of her green eggs being any different than a normal egg. Is this a bad egg or what?
Answer: I have a friend who raises chickens and I am lucky enough to get her farm fresh eggs, the shells are actually a bit hard to crack. I noticed a couple of the egg whites (albumen) were tinged green at times, I checked with her and also a friend who is an teacher of agriculture at UF, he said this is dependent upon what the chickens were fed, the green tinge indicates higher levels of B2 in their diets and is perfectly acceptable to eat, I have eaten them and other than a slight limp and drool....joking, they are fine, if it bothers you or if an odor is detected then don't eat them. Cheers
Question: Boiled eggs, why is most of the egg coming off with the shell? Just boiled eggs let them cool and now most the egg white is coming off with the shell. WHY?
Answer: when you boil the eggs, start with cold water, add eggs, bring water to a boil, turn eggs on low for 20 minutes to 1/2 hour, then put eggs in ice water and keep them cold adding more ice for about 1/2 hour........ the eggs will peel beautifully
Question: How many regular egg whites should I use in a recipe that calls for two LARGE egg whites? I have a recipe that I would like to make, however it calls for to large egg whites, and I only have regular sized eggs. How many egg whites should I use to make sure I get the full taste and proper proportions?
Answer: Three!
Question: Can I use the whole egg when making a cooked pie filling instead of just using the egg yolks? I am making a pecan pie that calls for egg yolks in the cooked filling using the egg whites for a meringue. I would prefer to use the whole egg if possible and not make the meringue. Would I just cut down on the amount of eggs used?
Answer: 1 whole egg = 2 egg yokes
Question: What is the best way to boil an egg? I put my eggs from the refrigerator into some water in a pan and then bring the water to a boil and turn the fire off. I leave the eggs in the boiling water for about 20 minutes and then pour the hot water off and put cool water over the eggs and let them sit a while in the cool water so that I don't get burned when I peel them. Sometimes pieces of egg white adhere to the shell when I peel them. What am I doing wrong? How do I prevent the egg shell from sticking to the egg white? Is my method wrong or is something wrong with the eggs that I bought?
You guys in this "Food & Drink" part of Yahoo! Answers are great! (Except for 1 brat who got loose in here. Keishadbest, you made me lol.) I'm going to try some of your suggestions and pick 1 lucky winner.
Those who said I was overcooking my eggs were correct.
The vinegar method was 50/50. One egg came out perfect the other was left miserably deformed coming out of the shell.
The salt worked flawlessly.
I was rooting for the squirrel because he boils 3,000 eggs every year, but putting the eggs in boiling water was tricky business. I almost burned my fingers, and I cracked 1 egg slightly when I released it too soon to avoid burning my fingers. Peeling with water worked well though.
The blowing air through the egg method seemed promising but 1 egg came out perfect and 1 stuck to the shell a little bit.
The winner of this impartial experiment – flawed though it may be – is keishadbest – not!
Answer: 12-15 minutes should be enough for even very large eggs, otherwise you run the risk of having the eggs crack through the shells while they are boiling. To make them peel easily, add a fair amount of salt to the boiling water when you put the eggs in.
edit - if you aren't sure if the eggs are fully boiled, try taking one out and spinning it on a countertop--it should spin for a long time when it is fully boiled.
Question: How to attach an egg to the top of a water bottle rocket and launch it without the egg breaking? Our physics class has a project in which we must have a water bottle rocket, and somehow attach an egg to the top. This contraption must launch and land with the egg intact. After landing, the egg must be able to come out of the contraption so our teacher can break it herself (ie, no freezing it in a block of glue, etc.) It must go around 10 feet in the air. Any ideas on how to accomplish this feat?
Answer: Use part of an egg carton, since these are designed to keep eggs from breaking. You can use two of the bottoms: one to cradle the bottom and the other the top of the egg. You can keep this cradle part of the contraption together with a rubber band or Velcro, so that the egg can be later removed.
You will probably need to wrap the egg in some other sort of packing material. This could actually be the way that you also fasten the egg cradle to the rocket. Put the cradle on top of the rocket and then wrap both around the sides (cylindrically) with bubble-wrap. Scotch-tape it together. Be sure to have some excess wrap protruding above the top of the cradle--the heavier, top side of the rocket-egg contraption should hit the ground first, so you want to have extra padding up top.
Don't forget to test it before the actual class demonstration.
Good luck!
Question: can i add more eggs to the same pickled egg juice once the others are gone? hello, I just started making pickled eggs and I was wondering if I could just add more eggs to the same pickled egg juice or if I had to make more. thank you for your help.
Answer: Some of the acid content and salt is absorbed into the first batch of eggs, so the concentration is reduced.
If the concentrations fall too low, the pickling process will not retard the decay process.
You can 'top up' any salt, but for the vinegar, you might want to add a bit of the 'concentrated pickling vinegar' or 'vinegar essence'.
You might want to bring the liquid to the boil (before you top up) if you are concerned about hygiene, but the acid and salt are the long time traditional 'disinfecting agents' anyway, which is WHY they were used from ancient times! Do NOT boil the mixture in an aluminum pan, it will dissolve it and the aluminum can cause health problems! Use Stainless Steel or ceramic.
You might want to add a little more spices to refresh them.
You probably shouldn't keep reusing too many times, the spices will get stale, and the ingredients aren't too expensive.
Question: Shouldnt eggs be cooked in recipes? Is there the same danger in egg subsitute? My mom would never serve something that was not cooked that contained raw eggs. Like a pudding pie, egg nog etc. Does egg substitue have the same issue? I have been seeing recent recipes using eggs that are not cooked. I would think that with all the raw food warnings this would be a problem. Does keeping the food with the egg cold make a difference?
Answer: Most good egg nog is cooked.
I do not know where you live but most of the custard and pudding pies I make are also cooked in the oven.
But as with any food there is always the danger of getting sick from something.
Question: How many tbsps of egg beaters equal 10 egg whites? I am making cupcakes which require 10 egg whites but i am using egg beaters. Can anyone tell me the eqilvalant number of tbsps of egg beaters?
Answer: 2 Tablespoons of eggbeaters = 1 egg white
20 tablespoons = 1 and 1/4 cups. (20 tablespoons divided by 4 [4 tablespoons in a 1/4 cup] equals five 1/4 cups = 1 1/4 cups)
Question: What causes egg shells to sometimes stick to boiled eggs and making them hard to peel? Sometimes when I boil eggs, the shells stick and don't come off the egg easily. What causes this and how can it be avoided?
Answer: Don't use really fresh eggs. The membrane between the shell and egg is too tight. I use ones a week or more old.
And, after they're boiled, plunge them immediately into ICE water to cool.
Question: Can I use egg whites only in baked good recipes calling for eggs? I am trying to make my traditional breads (zucchini, banana, etc.) lower in fat and cholesterol. Can I use egg whites only in equal amounts of the egg called for in these recipes or will that mess things up?
Answer: If the recipe calls for an entire egg(s) you need to use both yolk and white.
Question: What to do when trying to hatch a robins egg at home? Well, I found this egg today and it is definetly a robins egg. I have several questions: What instruments do I need for the egg to hatch? How do I prepare the egg for the process (how is everything supposed to be placed?), How long does it take for the egg to hatch? What kind of environment should the egg be in while the hatching process? What to do the day the egg is hatched? How do I take care of the bird after it is hatched? I would really appreciate answers to these questions and thank you very much!
Answer: You cant. Its VERY illegal.
You can be fine $500 and/or 6 months in jail for just being in possesion of that egg.
Even if it weren't illegal you would almost 100% positively not be able to hatch it.
Sorry.
Take it to a wildlife Rehabilitator.
