Fertilizer
Question: fertilizer? what to do if used old fertilizer on lawn
Answer: As long as you watered well after you put the fertilizer on your lawn, you should be fine. If your fertilizer is REALLY old, it may not be as strong as it used to be. Then you might have to fertilize sooner than if you used "fresh" fertilizer.
Good Luck!!
Question: Fertilizer - Why is it ok to just spread fertilizer rather than put deep in soil close to roots? I notice that all instructions i have read about putting fertilizer on my lawn (e.g. Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer and Weed Control) always says to use a spreader (or dropper) to put the fertilizer on the "surface" of the lawn.
From my understanding fertilizer contains valuable nutrients for the lawn (its food for the grass) and so i would best think it would work better if the fertilizer was closest to the lawn's roots found far underneath the surfce. So how then is tossing fertiizer on the surface of the grass useful?
And wouldn't weeds just use the fertilizer as food too?
If it burns them chemically because the fertilizer is so close to them then why do instructions mentions to use fertilizer in a mix with new seedlings -- you dont get closer to that and would that then burn the new seedling because the fertilizer is so close?
Answer: Because today's topical chemical fertilizers are usually designed on a slow release basis so you don't have to do as much work. They feed your lawn a proper balance with each rain or watering.Who wants to work any harder than we have to?If you are worried about weeds use a weed and feed fertilizer.
Question: What type of fertilizer should I use (or is safe) for indoor plants that I will be consuming? I was just wondering if people use different types of fertilizer when they plan on consuming a plant that they are growing. Are there any unsafe fertilizers? What about that pre-fertilized potting mix?
I'm growing catnip and lemon balm.
Answer: Any type of fertilizer as long as it is not a combination product should be safe to eat. A combination product is where the fertilizer is attached to or mixed with some sort of pesticide. A lot of your lawn fertilizers will have a broad leaf herbicide or insecticide for example. But any straight fertilizer would be fine. If it is natural or chemical it is still the same basic elements that make them up (N) Nitrogen, (P) Phosphorous, (K) Potassium. Some fertilizers will also include some micro nuitrients as well, but none of which would be harmful to you to injest afterthe plant brings them up into itself.
Question: How long after using a fertilizer with moss out can I apply a weed and feed fertilizer? I used Scotts fertilizer with moss out about 2 weeks ago. Now I am getting lots of crabgrass and would like to apply another fertilizer with weed control. How long should I wait between applications?
Answer: sounds like the thing you'd be watching out for is not feeding too much fertilizer. the two poisons should be fully compatible with each other; like if u could find a product for crabgrass that had no fertilizer in it.
fertilizer like that is time release pellets that run out according to 2 reasons. one, how long they are supposed to last, most are 6 weeks but some are more, like 12. but reason two, ur usage on them...like do you water heavily and it is hot season. because the pellets are porous membranes that open according to heat but get washed according to water flow around them.

Question: What home-made fertilizer will most house plants benefit from? I have a coleus plant, a cactus, ficus, bamboo, and some others which I don't know the name of... and I would like them to grow better. I remember reading somewhere that just by putting skins of vegetables/fruits in certain plants' soil serves as a good fertilizer, though I'm not sure if that's true and what's the best way to do it. If any of you know any good tips for easy to implement home made fertilizers, please share.
Answer: Used tea leaves, yes, also used coffee grounds. Crushed egg shells are good too. If you have a fish tank, when you clean it, put the yucky water into old milk jugs and then water with it, also put the dirtied fish stones on top of your houseplant soil and more good fish fertilizer will go into the soil as you water regularly.
Question: What happens to liquid fertilizer if it froze over the winter? We left the fertilizer out in the back shed over the winter and we didn't notice that it should not freeze. If I put it on my lawn anyways, what will happen?
And also what happens to the fertilizer once it has froze?
Answer: I would use it anyhow. Just shake it up well. It might have lost some potency, but shouldn't hurt a thing.
Question: What is the best fertilizer to use for my Dendrobiums? I have read different information on which type of fertilizer to use with my dendrobiums. Some say used a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10 or a 12-12-12 but then other says it depends on what type of soil it's planted in and others say it depends on what stage the plant is in. The one thing every article I have read agrees on is fertilize weakly, weekly. Any suggestions?
Answer: The best fertilizer for all plants is compost. Chemical fertilizers are harmful to earthworms and and other microbial soil life. They also deposit toxic nitrates in groundwater, depleting a vital nonrenewable resource and they can cause eutrophication in aquatic and marine ecosystems as well (since groundwater flows into those systems). Eutrophication means excessive nutrients accumulate in a lake, stream, river, pond, or ocean, causing harmful algal blooms that deplete the water of oxygen when they rot, killing all the wildlife in the water.
Please go organic.
Question: I want to start a Fertilizer , pestisides and seeds retail sales business? I want to start a Fertilizer , pesticides and seeds retail sales business at a taluk in karnataka, please tell me the formal procedures to open the shop and start sales. I am a agriculturist but i don't have much experience in this kind of business. How do i contact the fertilizer or the pesticide or the seed company to get stocks? How much investment do i need. Please do suggest me on this.
Answer: You have to get license each for storage & sale of seed, pesticides & fertilizers. Contact quality control officer of Agriculture department of your area (generally at district level). Since you are new in market companies will not supply material directly. You have to take it from whole seller. I don't comment on Investment but keep in mind that you have to purchase against payment.
Question: What is the best homemade fertilizer for squash and cucumber? I recently transplanted two squash and two cucumber plants into the ground and they're doing okay, not great. I don't want to spend tons of money on fertilizer. I'd also like to know some homemade fertilizers for watermelon, tomato, and snap pea. I've heard eggs are good for tomato. Oh, and my dog eats the leave on the cucumber, so is there a good spray to keep him out of the garden?
Answer: Usually wind up buying cracked corn and grinding it a bit more myself so it won't sprout. Used coffee grounds are a type of seed meal too. Alfalfa pellets are another source. Seaweed too.
Question: How much fertilizer should I give to a seed and when? I'm doing an Investigatory Project for Biology and it involves growing plants and using 3 kinds of organic fertilizers. I'm going to use manure, compost and coffee grounds as the organic fertilizers and a Chinese Cabbage as the plant. How much organic fertilizer should I give to the seeds and when? Also, how much water should I give it and when?
Answer: Let the seeds grow for 2 weeks. Use little amount of fertilizer for seedlings
Question: Can i put down starter fertilizer after grass seed has germinated? i dethatched my backyard and placed seed down but i didn't use scotts starter fertilizer. The new grass has started to grow and i was wondering if i still could put the starter fertilizer down or should i wait a few weeks and place winterizer down.
Answer: When I plant grass seed, I fertilize it when I sow the seed and again after it comes up. Neither of these fertilizer applications are heavy. The whole point of fertilizing it at this stage is to get the grass established as quickly as possible. You need to get the roots down deep enough so that the seedlings will not burn off if you get a dry spell, and you want enough cover to prevent washouts in heavy rain (to bracket the extremes). And you want a lawn as soon as possible.
I would strongly suggest fertilizing now to give your grass a boost before it goes dormant for the winter.
I should point out that grass is not picky about what type of fertilizer you use. If the grass gets nitrogen it will turn green and grow. It is only a question of the amount of fertilizer you apply.
The next step is to mow the grass as soon as it gets to the heighth where you usually mow. This helps stimulate the grass to "tiller", that is start sending out rhizomes to spread, instead of just growing up.
Question: What kind of fertilizer do I use for arbivitaes and for verbernums? I remember being told one of these bushes required acid fertilizer and one didn't, but I can't remember. I hope someone can give me a correct answer.
Answer: Holly*Tone is a good organic fertilizer for these plants. Robert is giving you confusing and incorrect info. He says use a balanced fert (like 10-10-10 is a balanced fert) but then tells you get one with a higher middle number. Also, arborvitae do not flower and they do like acid fertilizers.
Question: What number cheap fertilizer should I buy to throw on large bushes in my yard? I have too many plants to use the timed released fertilizer. I'm planning to buy a 50 lb.bag. I also heard that it can be added to my compost pile and it will decompose more quickly. Is that true?
Answer: People generally buy 10-10-10. That's easiest to find in stores. You can use it on the lawn, garden, and trees. A fifty pound bag is a LOT of fertilizer.
Question: What aquatic plant fertilizer is the best? Recently set up a new 28 gal tank. Waiting for the cycling to be done. In the mean time I am researching plants. Don't want the fake plastic kind, want to go with real. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good fertilizer to use? I would like to use liquid form. Thanks.

Question: What kind of fertilizer do I need to promote new grass growth? I have an established lawn and would just like to make it thicker and more lush. What kind of fertilizer do I need to promote a thicker lawn? What combination of chemicals? Like 10-24-24?
Answer: Hi Mike
You need nitrogen to green up your lawn. When you go to buy the fertilizer, just ask about the ratio for your particular type of lawn.
Your local green house or home and garden center should be able to help you with that. It basically depends on where you live and the condition of the lawn.
Removing the thatch as 'cvorse_0'…mentioned is always a good idea. In Montana where I live, it is called power raking. Just ask around and you will be able to find power-rakes for rent.
Hope this helps.
Question: Can you put fertilizer under a tree which currently has fruit growing on it? I have a lemon tree (lemon lisbon) but the lemons are very small, dark and don't have much juice in them. Can I out fertilizer under the tree now or shouldn't I? It is in a sunny spot and gets a lot of water. I live in Australia if that helps.
Answer: You can fertilize every 2-3 months. Plants need more fertilizer when they are bearing fruit.
Make sure you are not over watering. Too much water causes root rot, and the root damage will actual cause the plants to dry out.
I have many lemon trees and only water them once a week in a hot dry climate.
