Fish Oil Supplements
Question: Can I take fish oil supplements if I am allergic to fish? I assume the answer is no. I bave had a serious allergy to fish and seafood since babyhood. But I know there are real advantages to eating fish or taking fish oil supplements to get the Omega-3 fatty acids. I don't think flaxseed oil quite cuts the mustard. What do you think? If I swallow some fish oil pills, will I be very sorry?
Answer: I would say you should try COD LIVER oil that is molecularly distilled and see if you have a reaction. If it is fine for you then try www.icelandichealth.com
You are right that it is very important since we are not eating wild and grass fed animals that our bodies developed on and need.
Question: How can I make taking Fish Oil Supplements less problematic? When I take my Fish Oil Supplements each day, I seem to burp a little bit for the 1st hours, and the smell offends me. I've tried eating oatmeal before, and that didn't work. Any suggestions on how to stop this from happening?
Answer: I stopped taking fish oil and take Flax Seed oil for the Omega-3 acids. I love them and no bad taste. Make sure they are high quality, organic cold-press stuff. Check online, but you get many of the same benefits from the flax seed oil that you get from the fish oil.
Question: What are the best Fish Oil supplements that help hair, skin, and nail health? I would like suggestions for the best fish oil supplements that would benefit my hair , nails, and skin. Suggestions for other natural supplements for hair, skin, and nails would be appreciated.
Answer: just any with a high concentration of the actual oil should be fine.
Question: What has been your experience with fish oil supplements? My doctor has suggested I start taking fish oil supplements - she specifically recommended the Nordic Naturals brand.
Do they taste fishy? Maybe a silly question, I know. Have you found that they've helped? My problem has to do with elevated liver enzymesl.
Answer: Fish oil is a natural safe and very potent anti inflammatory. If you have pain, it very well is caused by inflammation and fish oil will block it. My chronic low back pain and my bleeding gums all got better after I started fish oil....minimum dose is 1200 mg EPA and 600 mg DHA forget for the moment the amount of "fish oil" in the dose. keeps platelets from clumping thus lowering risk of stroke and heart attack. and good for "heart disease" in general. and new research shows that fish oil is marvelous against depression and other brain issues. I use Rx Omega-3 from Natural Factors and there is no fish burp.
Question: Do fish oil supplements work for adults with ADD? I'm a 48-year-old female recently diagnosed with ADD. I've been looking into natural remedies, for a number of reasons. I just downloanded an e-book that highly recommended fish oil supplements, but everything in the book was geared toward children. Have adults had success with this also? What other treatments can I try? I know exercise is highly recommended, but I have a few physical restrictions that make it difficult to do much in that regard.
Answer: I think fish oil is certainly worth a try. Make sure you get the mercury free kind, ask your pharmacist to help you find a good one without toxins. Also try a Bcomplex on top of your daily multi-vitamin. B vitamin deficiency had been proven to be related to cognitive function. Good luck to you.
BTW you are an immaculate writer... methodical and articulate. i would have never thought you'd have ADD! ;o)
Question: Will fish oil supplements make my skin oilier? I want to start taking omega-3 fish oil supplements.
I want to get all of the health benefits from them, but I want to make sure that the pills wont cause my skin to get oilier than it already is..
My skin is combination I suppose, it's pretty comfortable around the cheeks and gets oily on my t-zone area
Will it make my skin oilier?
Answer: It won't necessarily make your skin oily, but you won't smell too great. Everything you ingest comes out through your pores. So when you sweat, you're likely to smell fishy. Plus, for as long as you take the suppliment, whenever you burp, your mouth will have that awful, hot fishy taste.
Question: Fish oil supplements not beneficial for decreasing chances of heart disease? I just saw on CNN this morning a cardiologist saying that fish oil supplements are basically useless, that only the actual food source provides the benefits of decreasing stroke and heart disease? Is this so?
I always understood that the omega-3 fatty acids are what provide these benefits, which are included in both the fish oils supplements and obviously the fish themselves....
Answer: Actually, the cardiologist on CNN is wrong. Fish oil supplements do work, I know this to be true because my own cardiologist directed me to the studies that were done to support the use of fish oils.
Question: What are the pros and cons of fish oil supplements? My friend is taking GNC double strength fish oil supplements. Are there any side effects?
Best answer given!
Answer: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are known to as a mood stabilizer, and the countries that eat the most fish in their diets also have the lowest rates of depression. Other potential health benefits of fish oil include the following:
Reduced risk of cancer: Research suggests anti-cancer effects of n−3 fatty acids found in fish oil (especially breast, colon and prostate cancer)
Mental health benefits: fatty acids are responsible for the neuronal growth of the frontal cortex of the brain which is known to be responsible for personal behavior. Studies have actually shown that prisoners have lower levels of these fatty acids, and groups with higher levels have a lower rate of crime. Who knew? If you're looking for world peace, start with fish oil!
Cardiovascular benefits: The American Heart Association recommends the consumption of 1g of fish oil daily for patients with coronary heart disease. It should be noted that the highest benefits come from eating fish, not the supplement. However, not everyone has immediate access to a daily supply of tasty, fresh fish, so there's nothing wrong with popping a pill in a pinch.
Several studies have also reported a reduced risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
When I first started popping fish oil supplements, I thought they actually made me feel better. And interestingly enough, that was well before I had heard anything about the mental health benefits.
The only side effect I've encountered is a decidedly gross one: fish burps. No matter what the label screams at you, ("Fish burp free!"; "No fish burps - ever!"; "You'll never burp again!!!"), you may find yourself with a stinky, fishy surprise creeping up your esophagus. Fish burps are up there with the grossest burps ever (up there with tunafish sandwich and coffee burps, it must be said).
A few words of caution: a recent lawsuit alleges that some fish oil supplements contain excessive levels of PCBs, which are nasty man-made industrial chemicals reported to increase risks of cancer. However, the majority of these products were made from cod liver or shark liver oils. As the liver is the major filtering and detoxifying organ, PCB content is much higher in such products than in the more common fish oil produced from the processing of whole fish. So try to stick with fish oils made from the whole fish, not just the liver.
As much as I gripe, the fish burps are rare and fish oil capsules are no match for steady hands and an overwhelming desire to better myself. If it's any indication, I have a bottle of fish oil supplements sitting in my fridge, and I obediently take them almost every morning. And if they do in fact offer the many substantial health benefits attributed to them, then I think it's worth a few fish burps now and then.
Question: Does fish oil supplements raise the level of estrogen? I am concerned about fish oil supplements increasing my chances of a recurrence of breast cancer?
Answer: I've never heard of anything like that.
If you want the truth about breast cancer, I recommend reading this article: http://www.naturalnews.com/report_breast_cancer_deception_0.html
Question: Are Vegetarians allowed to take Fish oil Supplements? Same question as the title. I know that certain vegetarians don't eat any sort of fish or meats, but are those vegetarians allowed to take fish oil supplements? And If vegetarians do not take fish oil supplements then what is an alternative?
Answer: Well, your allowed to do anything that you want. And technically being a Vegetarian means that you dont eat their meat, not their by-products. I am a Vegan/Vegetarian, (I avoid by products when I can) only because of the process in which the meat/by-products are acquired.
So I dont think that is a very gentle process to the fish so I wouldn't take it.
But you could try . . .
Food sources of omega-3 fats - flaxseeds and walnuts
At the top of our list for increasing omega-3s would be flaxseeds and walnuts. One-quarter cup of flaxseeds contains about 7 grams of omega-3 fatty acids while one-quarter cup of walnuts contains about 2.3 grams. In either case, the amount is pretty substantial. Therefore by combining one-quarter cup of walnuts with a tablespoon of flaxseeds you will add close to the recommended 4 grams of omega-3 fats to your diet.
Food sources of omega-3 fats - beans
Flax seeds and walnuts are not your only choices, of course! One cup's worth of soybeans, navy beans, or kidney beans provides between 200 and 1,000 milligrams of omega-3s (0.2 to 1.0 grams). A four-ounce serving of tofu will provide about 0.4 grams of omega-3s. Therefore, these foods provide between 10% and 50% of the National Institutes of Health recommendation, and a substantial step up from the average U.S. adult intake.
Three other types of foods are important to mention as omega 3 boosters: winter squash, and olive oil. A cup of this winter squash will provide you approximately 0.3 grams. For extra virgin olive oil, the amount of omega 3s per ounce is about 0.2 grams.
With olive oil, stay away from frying. Frying with olive oil will damage the omega-3s and deprive you of their health benefits.
If you feel that Fish can still help you; dont fry that either.
In a research study that compared consumption of fried versus nonfried fish and risk of atherosclerosis, consumption of fried fish was found to offer no health protection to the study participants, even when the fish contained omega-3 fats.
Question: Is an itchy skin rash a side effect of consuming fish oil Omega 3 supplements? My face and neck get an itchy dry skin rash. This started around the time I started taking the fish oil supplements. The question is that is this really a side effect of the supplements? I've read and read on the internet and have not found that to be any of the listed side effects. The sad thing is that in every other respect the supplements have been fantastic. My depression is mostly gone and I sleep somewhat better. But this rash is driving me crazy! Although cream does help a bit.
Do you have any suggestions for me? Is flax seed oil a real alternative to fish oil or are the benefits of flax more limited?
Appreciate input, thanks.
In fact, when i've done a bit of research, I find that fish oil should be getting rid of skin rashes... not creating them! I'm confused... help?
Answer: Hmm.. sounds like it might be an allergic reaction to the supplements... I dont think that it's a common side effect but it definately could be for you if your body does not expect it. For depression you might want to try a B vitamin complex or yes another source of Omega's is Flaxseed oil... or Evening Primrose Oil
Question: Can you help with a question regarding Fish Oil Supplements? I've heard rumors about Fish Oil (Omega 3) Supplements, that when you take them you'll start having a "fishy" smell about you. OK, I know that this may seem naive - but I've never taken them before and this is one of those "Real or Rumor" kinda questions.
I have Lupus, and people that I have talked to say that it can help with joint health - which would be great - I just don't want to smell like a fish.
Any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
no fishy smell, just like taking garlic tabs - no garlic smell. Ignore the four ale bar lawyers who know everything, take some Omega 3 tabs and breath on them, better still take plenty of garlic neat, just chop it up fine and use it to make a sandwich and then go and breath on them
Question: How many units/mg should I give our children of Fish Oil supplements? It has been suggested that we give our children Fish Oil tablets as a supplement to assist with ADD and other concentration issues. Regardless of the reason for use, how many milligrams per day should we give them? Ages are 10 years old-105lbs, and 12 years old-95 lbs.
Answer: 500mg
I am adult and I take 1000mg
You can also as the pharmacist
Question: I have decided to take a fish oil ,Iodine and zinc supplements, recommendations and advice please? I wish to increase my intake of omega 3, 6 and DHA, so I would assume that a general fish oil supplement that is not to expensive would cover that.
I also would like to increase my iodine and zinc levels, to improve my slow metabolism, I am unsure of the dosage required.
Would a tub of lava bread be sufficient for this?
I had a set on bloods done, which came back fine including my thyroid test. I am not sure if zinc levels were tested.
my calorie intake is only 1000 cals a day, sometimes less and I take regular exercise. I have only managed to lose 6 pounds in the past 18 months. My BMI and BFP is a the healthy range.
The only explanation is that my BMR must less than 1000, but that does not sound physiologically possible..
Answer: I'd suggest taking hemp oil capsules instead as they contain omega 3,6 AND 9. I feel they're better.
As for zinc, you can see in most multivitamin bottles the recommended daily amount (RDA) ? I don't know your condition but if you need more, than you'd best ask your Dr.
Iodine you should be careful with, at best I'd only need iodine salt.
Unless you have a specific condition, a general GOOD multivitmian such as Solgar's would cover you with any vitamin deficiency.
Question: has anyone broken out with pimples acne from fish oil supplements? I've read many great things about fish oil supplement ranging from clearing acne, to heart diseae, arthritist, asthma, depression, all skin disease, to increase in intellect . I had horrible experience with fish oil even the expensive ones and I am not sure why. Any positive or negative experience or informations shared will be appreciated.
Answer: Good question.....I have been taking fish oil for a few months and have not seen too much of a difference with my acne...which is very mild. I had hoped to see different results as well!
Question: Fish oil supplements: Does it matter what fish it comes from? I've seen different brands with different ingredients like herring, salmon, mackerel, shark, halibut, sardines, anchovies.
What's best?
Anymore information regarding fish oil? I'd like to start taking the supplement. Anything else I should know? I've heard about the enteric coated capsules to prevent the fishy aftertaste.
Also, how to keep from getting mercury poisoning from fish oil.
Answer: What you should look for is the marine glycerides content. A 1,000 mg capsule normally contains 120 mg of DHA and 180 mg of EPA and that is what matters. DHA is the really beneficial one.
