Margarita Pizza with Flaxseed Crust
**instead of bread flour, incorporate whole wheat flour into regular flour.
Yields 2 pizzas
Flaxseed Pizza Dough:
2 cup(s) all-purpose unbleached flour
2 tablespoon(s) flaxseed
3/4 cup(s) water
3/4 tablespoon(s) instant dry yeast
1 1/2 tablespoon(s) olive oil
1 teaspoon(s) salt
Pizza Sauce:
2 tablespoon(s) olive oil
1/2 cup(s) onion, diced
2 teaspoon(s) garlic, minced
4 tablespoon(s) tomato paste
2 can(s) (14 1/2 ounces each) undrained tomatoes, diced
1/2 cup(s) vegetable broth
2 teaspoon(s) dried Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon(s) sugar
Salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
4 tablespoon(s) basil, chiffonade
Toppings:
6 tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
12 ounce(s) fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/2 cup(s) basil
DIRECTIONS:
Flaxseed Pizza Dough:
1. Combine the flour, flaxseed, and yeast in the bowl of an electric 5-quart mixer and stir with a wooden spoon to evenly blend the ingredients. Add the water, olive oil, and salt. Mix on low speed for 2 minutes using the dough hook attachment. Increase the speed to medium and knead until the dough is elastic, about 4 minutes.
Note: The dough may be slightly sticky, but should not be excessively so.
2. Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turn to coat, and cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Allow to rise in a warm place until nearly doubled in size, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
3. Fold the dough gently and let rest until relaxed, about 15-20 minutes. Divide the dough into 2 equal pieces and form into round, smooth balls.
4. Cover the dough and allow to rest another 12-20 minutes. The dough is now ready to roll and shape as desired.
5. Pizza sauce: Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until golden brown and aromatic, about 30 seconds. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another 30 seconds to caramelize the paste. Add the diced tomatoes, vegetable broth, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper; mix well to blend. Reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened to the desired consistency.
6. Remove the heat and stir in the basil. Adjust seasoning to taste, then set aside until ready to assemble.
7. Assemble the pizza: Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to form a uniformly shaped circle, approximately 1/4-inch thick. Place the dough onto a sheet pan that has been lined with parchment paper. Spread the sauce evenly over the surface of the pizza, leaving 1/2-inch border around the edges. Roll the edges to form a rim on the crust. Arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices evenly over the surface, then sprinkle with the basil.
8. Bake in a 400 degree F oven until the crust is lightly golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes.
9. Slice the pizza and serve immediately.
Question: How do I convert the amount of whole flax seed needed in a recipe to a ground amount? I want to try out a new recipe that calls for flax seeds. The recipe gives the amount in whole seeds. In the prep, the seeds must be ground. I would like take a shortcut and purchase flax seeds alreedy ground but how do I convert the amount in the recipe from whole to ground?
Answer: Since flax seeds are so small to begin with, you can use a slightly shallower version of the same measuring spoon. For example, if it calls for 1 tsp, then instead of a level teaspoon, try filling the teaspoon slightly less full of the ground version to account for the minuscule spacing between that would have been the whole seeds.
Question: How do I chose a good flax seed supplement or oil? With so many brands out there, how do I pick a good, high quality flax seed supplement or oil?
Answer: Bluebonnet's Certified Organic Flax Seed Oil 1000 mg. Softgels are prepared from certified organically grown flax seed. The oil is naturally squeezed from the flax seed by a process known as cold pressing.

Should I buy the seeds and grind them myself?
Is it ok if I add them to a fruit smoothie?
Thanks!

Question: What is the proper amount of fish oil/flax oil to take daily? I have gone to a number of sites that tell me different amounts to take. I would like to reap the benefits of the supplements without putting my body at risk for anything else. Currently I'm taking 2 g of fish oil and 1 g of flax oil.
Answer: You can use either of the followings to determine the amount of fish oil/flax oil is needed by your body.
1. Silent inflammation profile method or
2. Using cholesterol results
Both are ratio based
Using (1), blood is drawn from you to find out the ratIo of AA over EPA, i.e. arachidonic acid over eicosapenaenoic acid. Some laboratories in US and Canada have facilities to do that. The normal ratio is 1.5 - 3.
Using (2) Take the ratio of TG/HDL. Normal is below 2
If your ratio is normal, the recommendation is you take 2500mg of oil ( one standard capsule of 1000mg omega 3 has 300mg of oil, i.e. EPA 180mg, DHA 120mg ). You take about 8 capsules on divided doses daily
If your ratio is above the normal, you take 5000mg for one month, then reduce the dosage to 2500mg.
Check your ratio every 6 months.
Question: What's the best way to carry flax seeds everywhere for sprinkling on my meals? I'm a vegetarian who wants to add flax seeds to all my meals. Since most of my day I'll be out and about or at the office, what's the best container or way to take my stash with me, wherever I go?
Answer: Have you tried the sprouted ones? More nutrients and you don't need to grind 'em.
You could put them in an empty pill bottle if you can find one. That will help protect them.They should be fine in just a Zip lock bag, though. Keep 'em dry!
To your health!
Question: How to incorporate flax seed in the diet ? I have heard that flax seed helps in lowering cholesterol. What are the best ways to use it. Does one need to drink more water when using it. Cinnamon is also supposed to do good.
Answer: The best i have found in being able to integrate flax into my diet, is by putting it in smoothies.
Purchase milled flax seed, they sell it at any grocery store, and your also going to need: 1/2 cup non-fat yogurt,4-6 cubes ice, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, a banana, 1 cup milk, and if you want some extra fiber, 1 cup oatmeal.
Cook the oatmeal, you can use quaker oats, just the plain type, put it into a blender then add the yogurt, ice, milk, pb, banana, and two tablespoons of flax.
Blend and drink!
MMM!
Question: What are the health benefits of flax seed? I take a lot of flax seed and it makes me tired.
I soak some each night for 10-12 hours before having with my cereal, and I also mix flax meal powder into my juice once a day.
I'm vegan and this is for me the easiest way to get fats into my diet.
What is flaxseed's health benefits and why does it make me tired and relaxed?
Answer: Flax shouldn't make you tired. Perhaps you are eating too much, and the bloating causes you to be tired.
Flax seed is a great source of fiber, omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. Depending on what kind you purchased, it is also high in lignans.
Question: How should one prune a flax bush? Should one trim the ends of the leaves? If so, in what shape? Do I just cut it bluntly? I've seen other flax bushes that have pointy leaves. Are they pruned into this shape, or just uncut?
Answer: No need to prune flax bush, just leave it alone, will have pointy leaves. It is an ever green, so when the odd leaf gets too old it will die off individually, just pull these off when they die.
Question: How to eat or cook flax seeds in vegetarian diet? i have bought flax seeds - brown small seeds. how to eat them. do they need cooking, do they need grinding or soaking in water
Answer: People just add them to everything. You can also get flax seed oil and substitute it in baking recipes. Recipes at the link:
Question: What brand of flax seed is the best to buy? I have been reading a lot about the benefits of flax seed but have never eaten it and need some tips. What should i look for when selecting a brand. Do i need to go to whole foods to buy it? Are there different types? What are some things i should look out for ie what i don't want the seed to contain, where i don't want it come from etc. is it better to use the seeds or the oil? Also what are some tasty recipes that contain flax seed?
Answer: I would go to your local health foods store in your city. Try the smaller ones. Like for instance, here in the West, we have Vitamin Cottage and Whole Foods. I shop at Vitamin Cottage myself. If you were to shop at Whole Foods, it will be more expensive. Ask the people that work there. They are very helpful and knowledgeable.
Golden flax seeds are best, and be sure to get the whole ones and grind only what you will use immediately in a coffee grinder. They go rancid pretty quick, its the oil. I also think organic is best, because why would you supplement with something good and put junk in your body!
Just look on the internet for the recipes. Lots of raw foodies include flax as a health food and they will have recipes.
Question: How much ground flax seed should I eat? Every morning I have a bagel with peanut butter and sliced apple. I figure that sprinkling on some flax seed could be a good way to get extra Omega-3's.
I am wondering how much GROUND flax seed I need to consume to get the recommended daily amount of Omega-3's.
I have not been freezing the rest...
How long does flax seed last without it being frozen? I figured that because it was a dry seed it would not go bad anytime soon...
Answer: Well, cod liver oil has about 1260 mg's of Omega 3's in it per daily serving.
3 tablespoons of ground flax seed contains about 4 grams of Omega 3's. (1,000 mg's = 1G)
So, 3 tablespoons is definitely enough Omega's and fiber for you for the day!
(Hope you're only grinding up what you need for the day, and freezing the rest!)
Lasts longer =)
It'll 'keep' so to speak, for a long time. But the medicinal qualities of it will breakdown and disappear after just a month. Freeze it!
Question: Can you replace flour with ground flax seed in a recipe? For example, if a muffin recipe calls for 2 cups of flour, can I replace 1/4 of it with ground flax seed? Or does flax not serve the same function as flour? The recipe is vegan and does not call for eggs, so I can't use any flax to replace eggs. Thank you in advance.
-Re-L Cherie.
Answer: Here is some others you can use to replace flour or you can do what you have wrote.
1 1/2 cups bread crumbs;
1 1/8 cups cake flour (1 cup plus 2 Tbsp);
7/8 to 1 cup corn meal;
1/2 cup cornstarch plus 1/2 cup rye, potato or rice flour (sift together 6 times, use with 2 tsp baking powder per cup in quick breads as wheat flour allergy substitute);
13/16 cup gluten flour (1 cup less 3 Tbsp);
5/8 cup potato flour;
7/8 cup rice flour;
1 1/3 cups rolled oats;
1 1/4 cups rye flour;
1/8 cup soy, cottonseed, peanut or carob flour plus 7/8 cup all-purpose flour;
1/3 cup wheat germ plus 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup minus 1 Tbsp whole wheat flour.
A general rule of subsitition for flour is to reduce the flour by 1/2 to 3/4 cup and add the equivalent in flax flour. The fiber content of flaxseed flour will require some additional liquid when converting traditional recipes, as baked goods will brown more quickly
For eggs
1 tbsp milled flax seed and 3 tbsp water = 1 egg. Light, fluffy cakes!
Question: How long does ground flax seed stay "good" for? I like to grind flax seed and store it in a bag so that I can sprinkle it onto foods with convenience. How long can ground flax seed be kept while retaining its health benefits (omega 3's)?
Should I be preserving or storing it in any particular manner? Right now it just sits in a zip lock bag on my kitchen counter...
Answer: If you refrigerate it, it should be good for a few weeks. Best not to buy too much at one time.
Question: How much flax seed is safe for a feline? How much flax seed is a good amount to give to a 16 pound cat?
Answer: if it's the oil about 4-5 drops otherwise just a couple of pinches sprinkled in the food.
Is this for constipation? If that doesn't work you can give 1/4 tab of senekot for 2 days which should do it. Senekot is an over the counter laxitive
