Flaxseed
Question: How many tablespoons of ground flaxseed should a vegan consume? How many tablespoons of ground flaxseed should a vegan consume daily? I have tried taking 2 teaspoons of flaxseed oil daily but it is disgusting... So I have been consuming 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed (into smoothies mmm) Would this be enough in order to get my day's worth of omega-3?
Answer: Two teaspoons a day should be enough.
Question: What would flaxseed replace in a recipe? At starbucks they sell a bana loaf with chocolate chips and flaxseed. I have a recipe already for bana loaf, but wondering do I just add a small amount of flaxseed or does it replace another ingrediant?? Thanks, any help will be great!
Thanks for the answers, very helpful!
And I realized, I spelt banana wrong, oops! Glad you were able to make it out
Answer: I do that a lot in recipes. Flaxseed is high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and phytochemicals called lignans. Flaxseed can help reduce total blood cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels — and, as a result, may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Flaxseed oil also contains omega-3 fatty acids, but it doesn't have the beneficial fiber that the seeds have.
Recommended daily intake for omega-3 fatty acids has established adequate intake amounts of between 1.1 and 1.6 grams a day for adults. One tablespoon of ground flaxseed provides 1.6 grams of omega-3 fatty acids.
Substitute for one egg
1 tbsp ground flax plus 3 tbsp water; stir and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes
----
Tips for including flaxseed in your diet:
•Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to your hot or cold breakfast cereal.
•Add a teaspoon of ground flaxseed to mustard or mayonnaise when making a sandwich.
•Mix a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into an 8-ounce container of yogurt.
•Bake ground flaxseed into cookies, muffins, breads and other baked goods
You can also use flaxseed in place of eggs in muffins, pancakes and cookies.
----
In addition, flaxseed can substitute for fat, too. Usually I would do that as a partial substitute and still use margarine or oil so the consistancy doesn't change in baking goods.
2 T. flaxseed meal = 1 T. margarine, butter, or cooking oil
* When baking with flaxseed meal as a fat substitute, baked goods will brown more quickly.

Question: How much flaxseed oil would I have to eat each day to get 300mg DHA? I get 300mg DHA (plus 20mg EPA and 6mg AA) daily from a nutritional supplement. However, I'd rather not take a supplement and I'm actually quite keen on the ethical and health advantages of a vegan diet. I currently am not vegan but eat very little saturated fats and refined carbohydrates (which I know interfere with n-3 absorption and digestion) and lots of green leafy vegetables every day (which contain plenty of n-3 although not necessarily the long-chain versions). So roughly how much flaxseed oil, or other vegan food source, would I have to eat for my body to synthesise 300mg DHA from the absorbed fatty acids? Scientific references welcomed!
Answer: Check out Nature's Path foods. most have flax seed added. if you eat whole flax seed you have to grind them (or chew them- not very inefficient) to get the benefit- because they just pass through your digestive tract unused.
Switching to vegan is easy!
Good luck.
Question: What is the best way to grind flaxseed? Flaxseed is a great supplement, but if you just use the whole seeds, they pass through your digestive system without you benefiting from their nutrients. You can buy the seeds pre-ground, but it's much more expensive. I was wondering if anyone found a good way to grind them at home.
Answer: Use a coffee grinder.
Question: Should i take Fish oil and Flaxseed oil together, i want to help improve my skin and overall health? I have heard flaxseed is great if you have dry skin, which i suffer badly from and i've heard that fish oil is great for your skin and many other aspects of your health.
I bought fish oil and flaxseed oil capsules today but now im wondering about any side affects!!!
Any advice? =)
So its fine to take Flaxseed (2 capsules of 1000mg's) and Fish oil (2 capsules 1000mg's) together every day?
Answer: Buy the fish oil that already have Flaxseed oil in it. I use "Now Omega 3-6-9". There's other products. You can buy the dark flax seeds and sprinkle them in your food also. The flaxseed have those Omega 3 & 6; clears up the pores in your skin.
Definitely good to use the product. Also, get you a decent Vitamin E cocoa butter and multivitamin. It'll help out in the long run.
Question: Does excess flaxseed oil suppliment give you thyroid problem? I take Omacore fish oil suppliment. Can I also take flaxseed oil? I read about excess flaxseeds in diet cause thyroid problems. Isit true? How much and what form - oil, raw seeds, roasted seeds or powder - is the safe flaxseed intake?
Answer: The raw flax seeds themselves do:
http://www.drmirkin.com/nutrition/N192.html
This is from a compound called cyanogen.
It is converted in the body to another chemical called Thiocyanate (SCN). SCN in high concentrations in the blood for prolonged periods may have an adverse affect on the thyroid gland and may reduce its ability to take up Iodine.
http://www.ifafitness.com/health/herbals.htm
You should not eat more than 3 tablespoons a day of the raw seeds and I would opt for less than this if you are even borderline hypothyroid or are on medication for hypothyroidism.
Cyanogen is made inactive my cooking:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Flax-Seeds:-A-Rich-Source-of-Omega-3s&id=154185
so roasted flax seeds would be free of cyanogen. Powder would be cyanogen free only if was processed by pasteuisation or another method to remove cyanogen. It would be best to contact the manufacturer for such info. If it was from sprouted seeds, the sprouting process may remove cyanogen but again you need to ask the manufacturer for details. There is often a contact number on the packaging.
Flax seed oil: there are conflicting reports:
This report says flax seed oil does not contain cyanogen:
http://www.ifafitness.com/health/herbals.htm
and so does this:
http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~shlevy/DIETARY%20SUPPLEMENTS.htm
This report says that flax seed oil (quote): "contains also neurotoxic cyanogen glycosides and immuno-suppressive cyclic nonapeptides. Therefore, in order for flaxseeds oil to be used as edible food for reducing the plasma level of cholesterol and hyperlimidemia, it is preferable to remove these toxic components and saturated fatty acids from flaxseed or its oil before using as edible food." (unquote):
http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?wo=2006137717
I would therefore again ask the manufacturer if the oil has been processed for removal of the toxic compounds.
It is likely that flax seed oil manufacturers are aware of the toxic components by way of the seeds and process the oil to remove these, by various methods such as this:

Fish oil is excellent for you ...why not stick with fish oil.
Also, I do know that flax seed oil goes rancid really quickly so if you purchase a bottle of the oil you need to refridgerate it.
If you have thyroid problems stay away from soya also as this can cause problems with the thyroid gland in those predisposed to problems especially.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

Answer: if you have a trader joes nearby, they have it with the cereal and stuff. the one they have is in a white plastic bag that looks like a bag of coffee beans...if you cant find it just ask. otherwise, go to a natural/health food store and they will definitely have it (FYI, it really needs to be refrigerated)...it has a nutty flavor, i sprinkle it on cereal.
Question: Why do I have more energy and less appetite, is it because of the flaxseed oil? I recently started taking a multivitamin and flaxseed oil capsules every day. I immediately noticed a surge of energy without any need for coffee or more sleep. Also, I noticed I am rarely ever hungry anymore. I am slightly hungry in the morning when I wake up, and slightly hungry in the early afternoon but other than that, I don't even think about food!
Do you think it's from the Flaxseed Oil capsules?
Answer: Yes
Question: Flaxseed: is it better to eat whole or shredded seeds? I get the impression that shredded flaxseed is absorbed and digested easier. Does anyone know for sure?
Answer: Whole seeds pass through a person undigested...so ground up is better.

Question: Whats up with flaxseed? I want to start using it but am confused, can you help? I went to the store and they had the Flaxseed in whole seed for and also flaxseed meal. Question: What are the health benefits of Flaxseed Oil? I take flaxseed oil everyday. I want to know all of the benefits, and what foods I should be eating when taking these vitamins.
Mr. Answer...Im not really sure what you mean?
Answer: Flaxseed oil is a rich source of alpha linoleic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. Alpha linoleic acid is converted into DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA ( eicosapentaenoic acid). It is used to reduce inflammation, promote healty circulation and healthy skin, hair and nails: as well as to improve constipation. It is also used for Asthma, Attention Deficit Disorder, Bipolar disorder, cancer, cardiovascular disease, copd, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, IBS, Lupus, osteoporosis, preeclampsia pregnancy, and schizophrenia.
Too much flaxseed oil can cause diarrhea. Men with prostate cancer should avoid supplemantation with flaxseed oil and use ground seeds instead. Flaxseed ooil has a mild blood thinning effect, so check with dr. if on blood thinning meds.
Usual dosage is 1-2 tbsp a day or 8-12 capsules a day

Answer: Flaxseed is very beneficial to weight loss. For one, it has almost 4 grams of omega 3 in each tablespoon. This is shown to help weight loss. It also has 0 grams of net carbs, because the dietary fiber helps prevent disease, inflammation, and constipation. It is very healthy!

glad to see someone using their common sense! kudos!
Question: What is the mg of regular bottled flaxseed oil? Dr Budwig promotes blending 6 tablespoons of flaxseed oil with cottage cheese. But there are various strength of flaxseed oil out in the market. What strength of the oil is suggested?
Answer: There is no "strength" of flax seed oil. The main difference is wheather or not you want flax seed oil with lignans (little particles of flax seed still in the oil,) or without. If you get an oil with lignans then the amounts of EPA and DHA (omega 3) will vary, as the particles are, for lack of a better term, "taking up room" in the oil and that is where those substances are found. If you are taking 6 tablespoons a day however, I don't think that would really be enough to matter.
I personally would get a flax oil without lignans to start with. The lignans can be gritty and kinda gross if you ask me. If you want them then just used ground flax seed itself. Also, start out slow, because if you start taking that much at once (or in one day) you could get dirreah until your body is used to it. Also, don't limit yourself to just cottage cheese. I take mine in my morning smoothie and over a salad if I have one that day.
Basically you can use flax seed oil for any application so long as you do NOT heat it in any way. You can pour it over hot food that you are getting ready to eat, (think oatmeal or something,) but not before the cooking begins. Anything cold is obviously fine too. Also make sure the oil you buy has been kept refrigerated and that you keep it so after purchase. Air, light, and heat all destroy the good omega 3 so be careful! If it smells "off" then don't use it!
