Food Group Pyramid
Question: What food group of the food pyramid does the tomato belong to?
Answer: I really do not think it matters if you class it as Fruit or Veggie, as long as you then also eat something out of the other group.
do not over eat on any of the food groups, A varied diet is best in my oppinion
Question: What food group does gravy belong to on the pyramid? i have to figure it out for a food pyramid project :)
Answer: If it's "au jus", then it's just the juice from the beef ... if it's an actual "gravy", then it has flour, or other thickener in it, and would have more grain product in it than anything else.... although it would be a composite of products from different food groups
Question: Is it ok to eat more servings from a food group than is listed in the food pyramid? I'm wondering because I eat about 11-12 servings of grains a day. However, on days I exercise, (4-5 days a week) I burn about 600 calories while running. I do this and reward myself with a big bowl of cereal at night before bed, in addition to the 11-12 servings of grains I already consumed during the day (cereal in the morning, sandwich bread, rice etc.) Is this ok or is it too much from the grain group? I was thinking that since I burn 600 calories from running, that it would be ok to replace those calories with more grains. Is there something else I should be eating to replenish those lost calories or is what I'm doing ok? I'm basically eating 18 servings of grains a day.
renee, I never said that I burned calories to get rid of excess. I'm eating a maintenance style diet so the calories I burn from running would make me LOSE weight. So replacing those calories are a must if I don't want to lose weight (I'm at my desired weight now)
Answer: Well, the food pyramid is outdated now and has been revised with new advances in nutritional research -- as it turns out some carbs are really bad for you. It sounds to me like you eat a ton of simple carbs which could be having an adverse effect on your blood sugar levels, and could lead to problems with Type II diabetes in the future. I realize that with so much running you need a lot of carbs, but in my experience it is best to make these complex carbs -- those found in vegetables, fiber, whole grain breads/cereals/pastas, brown rice, couscous, etc. Make sure that your carb products do not contain 'enriched' or 'precooked' flour/wheat products, replace white rice with brown or couscous, try to eat a lot of vegetables, make sure your cereal is whole grain (I think most of the General Mills brands are now), and you should be fine no matter how many servings of these complex carbs you are eating.
Question: what food group of the food pyramid would gatorade be in? i need to know for my science homework.
same with a capri sun.
Answer: Sweets.
Gatorade provides salts and sugar, Capri Sun mostly provides sugars. I don't think Capri has enough real juice in it to be a fruit (haven't looked at the label in a LONG time).
Question: number of servings to consume from each My Pyramid food group depends on a person's? a. weight and calorie needs
b. calorie needs
c. age and calorie needs.
d. gender and calorie needs.
Answer: I would say "c". As you age, your body requires different proportions of each food. An infant obviously takes in a larger portion of dairy for example. Elderly people need to take in higher fiber diets and must east more grain and fruit to offset declining digestive function. There is even a specific pyramid for people over 70 called the "Modified mypyramid for older adults."
Hope this helps.

Question: What food group is garlic in on the food pyramid? http://dietmotion.com/images/food-pyramid.jpg
a
veggie?
protien?
fat
and
junk??
Answer: It would (technically) count as a vegetable. However, I doubt that you will eat at any given time (or even within one day) enough garlic to count as one serving of vegetables. Therefore, you shouldn't really count it in your servings of food. For example, if you need to eat 9 fruit and vegetable servings a day, and you had 2 cloves of garlic, I don't think that's enough to count as a serving. 2 cloves of garlic has less than 10 calories. It's not enough that you need to worry about it. If you're eating a LOT of it, then I guess you could count it as a vegetable serving.
Question: healthiest food from the grain group in the food pyramid? i dont eat any bread/rice/pasta/noodles so i guess i need more carbs but i eat oatmeal and shredded wheat everyday. besides oatmeal, whats are some really really healthy from the bottom of the food pyramid? i know quinoa is but i can never find it. compared with oatmeal, is brown rice healthier?

Answer: www.mypyramid.gov was developed by USDA in 2005 after the old one, developed 1992 failed badly as US dropped further by international standard on health.
There are a total of 12 different pyramid for different people.
However, the true is that it doesn't work this way to be healthy as it is almost impossible to log on every day and monitor your calories.
“That's a shame because the USDA Pyramid is wrong... It's wrong because it ignores the evidence that's been carefully assembled over the past 40 years. Its stress on carbohydrates - such as bread, rice, and other grains - are based on questionable science. Indeed, it actually steers you away from foods that can improve your long-term health."
Dr. Walter C. Willett, M.D.
Chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health and a professor of medicine at
Harvard Medical School
“I wanted to offer a new healthy eating guide based on the best scientific evidence, a guide that fixes the fundamental flaws of the USDA Pyramid and helps you make better choices about what you eat.” says Dr. Walter C. Willett, M.D.

Question: How many turkey strips are considered one serving of the meat and beans group in the food pyramid? I know, it's a strange question but for some reason, it just confuses me as to how to determine it.
Answer: One serving of protein is roughly the size of a deck of playing cards.
Question: What types of beans are a part of the Meats, Beans and Nuts group of the food pyramid? I tried doing a google search but couldn't get anything I was looking for.
What would edamame be classified as?
Answer: Since edamame is the soy bean AND the pod, I think I would personally consider it more a vegetable, like green beans that someone else mentioned. Edamame is harvested before the soy beans are mature, so it's still softer, but technically it's a soy bean with it's pod.
