Fresh Start Protein
Question: Is it ok to give a 5-yr-old a whey protein shake made with juices and fresh fruit? I just started going to a gym out here and they have protein shakes and I got one for me, but she just loved it and slurped that sucker down :)
Answer: Not a whole one! A sip from yours every now and then is okay, but don't let her have it every time. Too much protein stresses the liver and kidneys. (Consider ordering her one of her own with just the fruit and some yogurt or milk.)
Question: What are some things I should change about me? I'm in 8th grade and I just moved to a small town. I'm planning on making some changes over the summer because I didn't get the best start in 8th grade. I'm a little short and I'm not very built up so I'm planning on working out every night and eating more protein. I'm also planning on getting a new look. I really want to start fresh at high school in my town. If you have any suggestions that would be good for me, feel free to answer.
Answer: u need a pic for us to answer that
Question: What is the best detox diet around? I want to be healthy! And start fresh and clean. So what is a great detox diet to clean out my system? I heard that the way to clean out your body, and lose some fat, but not lose any muscle, is to eat raw foods only, as in only fruit and veggies, and also a scoop of protein powder in water a day. That is to keep your muscle intact. Has anybody tried this? Thanks!
Answer: i have heard the kim kardashian one works good. i think you can buy it at the drug store
Question: Can protein deposits be removed from my contact lenses after a week of being there? So, a little over three weeks ago I got new contacts (same brand, different strength) from my eye doctor. I had previously had some trouble with allergies and had used AOSespt or ClearCare solution to keep my allergies in check. However, since having my son, I started using OptiFresh as I don't always have time to wait a whole 8 hours between wearing my contacts and putting them back in. Probably about four-five days after I started wearing my first pair of contacts, I noticed all these bizarre spots on them and I was having blurry vision in my left eye only. I thought there was makeup on the contact and cleaned it. I switched to a new contact, and after only a day or two, the same thing happened. That's when I figured out that the problem was not my makeup, but rather protein deposits.
My problem now is that the deposits have been in first lens (which I kept in saline solution all this time!), for about 3 weeks, and in the second lens for over a week. I've cleaned the SECOND lens twice, and put it in the AOsept solution twice as well, but the cloudiness is still there. Do you think the protein will be removed, or should I throw now TWO sets of contacts (aka, 2 months worth) in the rubbage bin and start fresh with new ones?
Thanks in advance, you all!
Answer: Actually what you are noticing could be a combination of makeup and protein build up along with other things in your tear film, calcium deposits and anything else in that collects on the contacts.
Storing your lenses in SALINE solution is not a good idea. Saline is ok to rinsing and short term storing until you can get proper solution to clean and store them in. I will assume you meant cleaning/disinfecting solution. Plain saline even if sterile, (stops being so once a worn contact is placed in it), will allow microorganisms to grow, where the cleaning solutions won't.
Also if you don't always have time to wait for the AOSespt or ClearCare solution to work, you may very well be relying on the NO RUB options to do the job. In many cases they will, it appears that in your case they are not. You may find that you will still need to rub the lenses to help remove the film that has built up over the day. Rinse and then store them over night, and in the morning, rub again and rinse before putting them back into your eyes. You might also need to do an enzymatic cleaning for soft contacts once a week or more as well.
Do I think the already cloudy lenses can be saved? Won't hurt to try before tossing them out, as only you will know if the cloudiness is taken care of.
It's very possible that after having the baby, your eyes produce more protein in your tear film than they did before you were pregnant, (hormone changes and all that jazz), and have yet to settle down, or are what they are now. Which seems to be the case since it's happening in as little as 2 or 3 days now.
In any case, you have to work with what is happening now. so RUB to help remove the film, store only in the proper cleaning/disinfecting solution, not water or saline, and try an enzymatic soft contact cleaner.
Hope this helps.
Question: starting fresh... my costume is skimpy.? Long story short, I used to be really active. Hard core cheerleading and pretty into ballet. Both of those combined kept me in shape. i was never skinny, but i never had stomach rolls or a double chin or cellulite. (don't you wish you would accept the body you had in the past LOL gosh i used to hate myself for not having little B cups and for being 5'3 and 130 pounds)
so i need to start over. Halloween is coming (and so is homecoming at my old college) and i wanna look fierce. My costume involves a corset and fishnet tights... *clears throat*
I do realize that Halloween is about 12 weeks away. I know i need cardio and strength training, but where should i START? no gym right now, but i have a dvd player. LOL. i already drink a LOT of water, but i could definitely increase my veggie and lean protein intake.
help meeeee!!
Answer: You're doing good with the water. Keep on drinking. Stay away from fast food. Eat lean meat, chicken breast, fish, lean beef. Chill out on any white foods....white bread, potatoes, and pasta. Strictly meat and veggies for you. Then start excercising. Make sure you actually break a sweat. I personally recommend a good boxing aerobic workout. (Big surprise there!!!) I think you could find dvd's on that.
Corsets and fishnets, huh? Your drivin me crazy, girl!!! But I like it.
Question: Some questions about starting a saltwater aquarium? I had a freshwater aquarium for years now. I recently bought a new 60gallon tank. I am thinking of going for a saltwater aquarium.
First, do you need a special filter or an addition for saltwater? The One I have says it is for fresh or saltwater aquariums, so I am assuming it is fine.
When you first start do you just add the special salt and maintain proper levels by adding salt?
What is the best/recommended protein skimmers?
Last question... Is live rock completely necessary? Is is expensive?
Thanks so mush for your help!
Answer: There are no "special filters" for saltwater. Any filter will work for saltwater or freshwater just fine because the mechanics behind the filtration process are identical. Cycling still applies as well.
You add the salts when doing water changes...don't just dump salt into the tank. However, top-off water needs to be fresh. This is because the water evaporates, but the salt doesn't--it stays in solution. As such, it becomes more concentrated, and thus the water becomes more salty, over time.
Which protein skimmers are the best really depends on who you ask. People can agree that some skimmers are terrible (Seaclone, for example), but which ones are good vary. Steven Pro once wrote a great review online, giving his impressions of skimmers. It's biased, sure, but he's isn't exactly a nobody in the hobby. You might it helpful to review it here:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_1/cav1i1/protein_skimmer_impressions.htm
I won't say live rock is necessary...I will say that you're a fool to go without. It can be expensive, yes, but it's easily the one of the most justifiable expenses you can make. With cured live rock, you will not require any other filter (except the protein skimmer)...not only does it filter the water, but it dentrifies wastes entirely to boot. Its abundant advantages outweigh the costs several times over.

There's a bit more to know, of course, and I'm not sure how much research you done. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Bob Fenner's "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist." If you follow the advice in the pages, you'll be steered in the right direction.
Question: Back to working out/lifting! Need some advice starting fresh!!! Good advice please...? haven't really worked out since end of hs/1st year of college. i did however manage to pass my previous phase wall that stopped me from getting bigger the last 4 years or so by eating lots more of healthy foods, etc. asian male 21, 5'7 3/4, 155 lbs. what should i do? i have slim build from my hs sports days primarily cross country/track.. what can i do to get a bigger chest fast? my shoulders r also kinda narrow and my right shoulder sometimes stings and feels pulled when i do certain workouts.. is there a way i can lengthen my shoulder bones along with muscles? my legs r ok. just mostly upper body i wanna improve. i will continue to take protein and i am also gonna begin another round of glutamine/L-Arginine Ornithine at 3-5g a day each.. helped greatly in the past. u recommend i take tribulus terrestris as well? i do seem to lack testosterone from my physical appearance and muscle tone. and what should i eat? thanks for all your guys' input...
Answer: I would suggest a high protein, high carb diet to help gain some mass. I would do 1.5X your weight in protein meaning if you weighed 100 lbs, eat 150 grams of protein a day and so on. You should also take creatine in your protein shakes. It helps water stay in the muscles so as they repair after a workout, they are hydrated. My brother uses it and his chest and shoulders are bigger and lean and cut.His build was like yours, on the slender side.
Also you should do alot of lifting and minimal amounts of cardio to start. As for exercises in general I would suggest targeting a couple body parts a day. Maybe do back and biceps Monday, Chest and triceps on Tues, Legs on Wed and Shoulders on Thurs. Then take a rest day. Add in abs every workout and 20 minutes on the treadmill.
Question: How did you get out of a diet/exercise rut? I had this goal back in January to get down to 120lbs by September (at the time I was at 153lbs). I started out great - exercised 5-6 days per week (mostly cardio, some strength training), I kept my caloric intake to around 1400 - 1600 calories per day while still enjoying my food (I kept it well balanced, plenty of protein and fresh veggies, and tried to eat 5-6 small meals per day). I kept it up until about mid-May when I fell off the wagon and have struggled to get back on it again. I got down to 137lbs at my fittest but I'm back up to about 141lbs.
How do I get out of this rut and back to my exercise and diet plan again? I don't really know why I stopped or why I'm so reluctant to get back into it ... has this happened to anyone else?
I was walking 5 days per week - 5 miles per day. My cardio was walking to work every day (5 miles round trip). Unfortunately with the heat we've been having it's been difficult. I wanted to start going to the gym in the morning instead but I have trouble sleeping and so it's hard for me to get up early enough to go and workout before heading into the office.
Wanting the weight loss badly enough doesn't solve the fact I'm having problems sleeping and getting up early enough to exercise. It doesn't help that I have a hyperextended knee either and the recommendation about coffee? I can't drink coffee it makes me ill so that won't help. I'd love to get a personal trainer - but I'm flat broke.
I guess I was hoping people who have had this problem and overcame it would share with me how they did so ... I just need to read some inspirational stories from other people.
Answer: Make it fun!
Try something like rollerblading, belly dancing, fencing, tennis or swimming. The best way to stick with anything is to make it fun and exciting. Good luck!
Question: How long until I can see some results? I've started doing a 20 minute program on the elliptical machine (where the resistance automatically changes) and I'm eating no more than an 1100 calorie diet. Lots of fresh vegetables and lean protein. Is that enough to lose some weight?
I do the 20 mins everyday, and I forgot to say I also do 100 crunches and 50 butt crunches (i think thats what they're called!)
Answer: Slowly build up to 50 minutes at a time and don't be so strict with what you eat or you will not stick to it for very long!
Question: Senior Diabetics: What do you do to curb your sweet tooth cravings? I know there are a few of us on this forum. And I have trouble controlling my sugar cravings so often.
I try to keep canned or fresh fruit on hand. And often my husband will bake a cake, or bring home a
pie, knowing my resistance is nil. I read today, if you start off your day with a good protein filled
breakfast, you shouldn't crave sweets. But I do. What's to keep me away from those sweet pastries baked or brought home?
Answer: there is an old dieters trick that really does work and is so easy to do and it seems to handle that instant craving.
Next time you really are hungry for a sweet treat, have a dill pickle.
for some reason the total opposite of what you are craving seems to work.
My mother got quite creative when feeding her sweet habit( she was diabetic for years) and smetimes used a bowl of diet jello. To make the jello different, she would make it with diet soda so not it not only tasted sweet but had the effervescent mouth appeal as well. It was a 0 carb 0 calorie treat and she kept it in the fridge all the time.
My mother in law does that too.
Both also give in to the cravings when they are out and about and will indulge in a real piece of cake or pie or what ever and then work it in to thier daily carb count.
Also, I would have a serious talk with that husband of yours. if he wants pie or cake so bad, he needs to eat it out and away from you. That is very inconsiderate of him. Would he bring home beer if you were alcoholic? Same difference.
Question: How come I am not losing pounds? I have been riding my stationary bike like a demon, started with 5 min a day now I am up to 2 miles at a time at leasr once a day, I watch what I eat, 200 calories 0r so, fresh veggies and protein, 5x a day usually, my legs are toning up amazingly and yet, I got on a scale and GAINED 4 pounds~ What is up with that.
Answer: Muscle weighs more than fat..simple the weight is muscle. You will still be losing inches which the most important.
Question: losing weight by only eating fresh fruits and veggies? right now i'm 17 years old, 5'2'' and 145+ pounds. my doctor said that i'm overweight and my ideal weight would be around 120 pounds. but i don't know how to go about losing this weight. right now i eat processed foods (bread, crackers, granola bars, etc) and a lot of salt-loaded things (vegetable bouillon, which has like 50% of your daily sodium intake, processed soy products, etc). i know this, and lack of exercise, is what's making me overweight. i was wondering...
how much weight could i lose if i only ate fresh or frozen fruits and veggies (about 8-10 servings a day, or more) and protein sources such as nuts, organic soy protein powder and beans (reduced sodium)? i would also start exercising for about an hour a day: 30 minutes on either elliptical or stair step machine, 15 minutes weight training on bowflex or with free weights, and then 15 minutes jogging on treadmill at about 5-6 mph for a cool down. i'd also be drinking about 80 ounces of water each day and taking a multivitamin. i would cut out all bread/processed foods and animal products.
does this sound healthy? how much weight will i lose if i stick to this without cheating for 6 weeks?
thanks! y'all are loved.
Answer: You need an iron and protein supplement. Other then that, you should be fine.
Question: Whenever I put my contacts in my eyes get really irritated.. red.. and they start to cry real bad..? Even if I put in a fresh pair.. I clean them really good and change the storing solution daily.. on top of that i use some protein removing drops and I have some contact lenses drops that I use when they start to feel irritated, but they still do it even if i do all that... I don't know what else to do.. i wear air optix lenses and i also have an astigmatism ... is there anything else I can do? or are there any good drops that help?
also.. my eyes barely started doing this about 3 months ago.. this never used to happen.. and i dont wear my contact much anymore because it always ruins my makeup.. and just to add to it ive tried to wear my contacts without makeup and the same thing happens that how i know its not the makeup.
Answer: Definitely check with your doc. It may be a symptom of an underlying problem that needs treatment, like an infection. If you're new to this brand, it may be that you're not tolerating this lens material well, or maybe you've developed a sensitivity to the solution you're using. Stick to your glasses until your doctor figures it out for you.
Question: Do protein shakes make you fat? Specifically, I need to know if they make you gain fat if they fall into an appropriate amount of calories and carbs for a diet.
I am on a diet, and I feel stupid becaus eI keep "hearing" things. When I started my diet I took a whey protein shake for the extra protein. I do not eat red meat anymore, so I was a little concerned. I mainly eat fresh fruits, veg., natural pb, I keep my carbs low (NOT non-existant), white meat/fish, whole grains, cottage cheese, fat free milk and soy milk, etc. No junk food, high fat foods, fast food, etc. The thing is I do not get all those good things everyday. I do meet my needs for the non protein foods. Anyway, my calories stay low, the new whey preotin shake I bought has 110 cal., 2 g. fat, 2g. carbs, 26 g. protein. These numebrs are relatively low, but I keep hearing that these shakes make you fat. Lord knows, I do not need anymore of that...I am trying to lose it.
I have more to add.......
More..I started lifting weights yesterday...I do walk about 30 minutes atleast 5 days a week. Not a lot of cardio yet...I have 50 lbs to lose. So, lifting, will I get muscle on top of the fat? Should I wait to lose more before I start lifting? I know more muscle...more weight loss....but I do not want muscle on top of my fat :)
I know this is common sense, but there is more to it than just an easy answer. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Answer: if your a weighlifter, protein shakes are GREAT. if not, you should avoid them.
the low carb diet is a myth, by the way. complex carbs ( root vegitables, whole grains, bran, oats, brown rice) are things your body NEEDS. take any of this before and after you exersize and you will get fantastic results.
if your not exersizing, friend, your out of luck...
bottom line, burn more than you eat....
Question: can u help me really confused please? today wasint a good day i was out all day so i missed a few meals and now im home its 8 pm i am thinking a having a protein shake to finish off and tomrow start fresh i was buisy today i have only eaten cereal in morning with protein shake and 3 hours ago i had a 1lb chicken the protein shake contain 1grm carb 1grm fat 17 grm protein trying to lose weight and gain muscle
Answer: I find your question confusing lol. But nevertheless I think you'll like this tip: prepare around 2 cups of oatmeal, mix a little more than a teaspoon of cinnamon, and eat this and finish it in portions throughout the day. Should help relieve the appetite and maybe even with calories. Kinda off-topic, I know, but you might benefit from it.
Question: Working out problem.? I do pull ups every day now. When i first started, i was only able to do 20. But i woke up early in the morning so sore that i couldn't even move my arms or flex my pecs. I have been doing them a lot every day for about 1 month now.
Now, from a fresh start i can do 55.I push my self so much that my arms just won't work anymore. But my problem is that i don't get sore any more.. not even in the morning after i workout very hardcore the day before. I'm not seeing any results either. I drink a lot of water, i eat 8 eggs each morning for breakfast, a sandwich with meat packed on to it for lunch, and for dinner, i eat 2 large steaks. I never skip a meal and i make sure i consume plenty of protein and water.
Answer: Too many eggs are bad for you.
Your body can only convert up to 300mg of the bad cholesterol per day; the rest of it stores up around the heart and arteries.
1 large egg, produces up to 300mg of the bad cholesterol. If you want to eat a lot of eggs daily, stick to the small ones, as these only produce 150mg.
There is lower bad cholesterol in white meat; but more of the bad cholesterol in red meat.
A chicken breast consists of 65mg of the bad cholesterol; which is better for you than red meat.
Opt for fish dishes, more than meat dishes..
Protein is a form of cholesterol; opt for fruit and vegetables, salads and fish more than meat dishes.
I have cut out all animal protein from my diet, I tend to keep the bad cholesterol at bay.
Fish contain the good cholesterol.
Disco-aerobics for 1 hour (non-stop) = you will loose 1LB.
Plus it will tone you up, and you will loose cholesterol and cellulite.
Keep this going... don't stop, until you get where you want to be.
