Fresh

Question: How does the fresh air damper feature of a thermostat work? I have a thermostat in my home with a fresh air feature that brings in air from the outside based on the outside temperature. How does it determine what temperature to use when opening the fresh air damper? How long does it stay open? How does the fresh air damper differential setting affect the fresh air damper function? The manual that came with the thermostat was of little to no help on this. Nope, didn't steal it. I bought a new home that came with it. Just trying to figure out how it works.

Answer: It's commonly called an economizer. When the temperature outside is cooler than the set point of the thermostat it will open the damper to assist your AC unit and save energy. It's most commonly used in commercial operations that require air conditioning inside even when it's 50° or below outside. Just because you bought a thermostat with that feature doesn't mean your system is designed for it. Or did you actually take the thermostat from work?
