Question: Is leather furniture sticky to sit on in the summer and cold in the winter? I am looking at replacing my living room furniture this year and I need some suggestions? First, we have 2 cats (and yes they sometimes scratch the ends of the sofa and loveseat that we have now-in fact it looks horrible) 2. The upholstery fabic we have now has piles all over it? I don't want to go down that road again when we choose new living room furniture. The room it will go in will be sat on constantly (no formal living room in my house) and occasionally napped on. I need suggestions. I not not going to spend a fortune on the new furniture, but I would be willing to spend some extra for it to last for at least 5-7 years (if not longer). Any feedback would be appreciated.
Answer: Yes leather is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I have leather in the vehicle i drive and put some cloth seat covers on them. If you have cats they will ruin that leather. I have a cat long haired and she sheds on my furniture. I keep a blanket or sheet where she likes to sleep .. Its hard when you have cats. But i had rather have cloth at least you can use one of those sticky roller brushes and get most of it up. I have had the same sectional sleeper sofa for 10 yrs now.and it still looks good.

Question: How can I contribute furniture as start up capital to my new business if I do not have receipts for them? Hi,
I am have just formed a new company in my home and want to contribute my old furniture (in addition to money) as a start-up investment. This furniture is about 4 months old and I do not have any receipts for them. I do have CC statements though.
1) Can I contribute this furniture as start-up assets to my business?
2) How do I decide FMV for the furniture if I do not have receipts?
Thanks
Answer: You should start by reading the IRS rules for home office expense, and deciding if the furniture qualifies as being deductible. Personally, I wouldn't try to take a tax deduction for it unless it was in an area of my home designated as the office, and 100% used for that purpose. If the furniture is in your living room and used partially for business use and partially for personal use, the IRS will see a red flag if you get audited.
If you do have a deductible home office, then the furniture in that office can be treated as a capital asset and depreciated over the life of the furniture. You may also be able to deduct the entire amount right away using Section 179 depreciation expense.
It seems the credit card statements could serve as proof of your cost. However, since it has only been four months you might also be able to get your retailers to provide you with copies of the receipts.
I would take a reasonable percentage of the furniture's cost to assign market value. If it is only 4 months old, it is probably in near new condition. Nevertheless, it has gone down in value somewhat. I think they say a car goes down in value by as much as 25% when you drive it off the lot. Seems like you could value the furniture at 70-90% of what you paid for it, depending on its condition, since it is so new.
An even better way of valuing the furniture might be to decide what depreciation would be over the life of the furniture, then compute the amount attributable to the 4 months of home use and reduce the cost of the furniture by that amount. I hope this helps.
Question: Commerical furniture delivery - How do you send coffee tables by freight? I am in the process of setting up a small furniture making business and I need to know how do you go about sending coffee tables etc that are not flat- packed. I would imagine that you would bubble-wrap the items and then get a freight company like Fedex to pick them up. Is it that easy? Should I consider putting these type of items in crates. The coffee tables I have made would be sent out lndividually to customers. They are not overly expensive and really not that large. But would Fedex etc accept this type of furniture without being crated.
If it is OK to send just by bubble-wrapping, what is the best way to do this to ensure the items does not get damaged?
I would also be sending out the coffee tables etc to international customers.
Answer: Me and my wife had some furniture delivered from the pottery barn a few months ago. We had two nitestands, a big dresser and a head board and they basically put the two nitestands and dresser in big boxes reinforced with plywood strips and lots of stryrofoam, all kinds of it too. And all of our furniture was delivered flawless. not so much as a smuge. I can sort of see why the delivery charge was kind of steep.
Question: What furniture maker makes solid wood bedroom furniture? I'm looking for furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc... Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I'm still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.
Answer: A-America has really nice solid wood furniture. We just bought a bedroom set made from New Zealand Pine....it is very nice and reasonable. www.a-america.com
Question: What should I use to clean furniture contaminated by mold that won't hurt particleboard and wood finishes? I recently moved all of my furniture that had been in a climate-controlled storage unit for 1 year into my new apartment. My couch grew mold in the storage unit, so I threw it out. The rest of my furniture is primarily particleboard (bookcases, dressers, etc.) and some wood. What should I use to clean this furniture to make sure that there is no mold on it and that won't destroy the furniture? Thank you!
Answer: bleach is about the only thing that kills mold
just have to be careful using it

Question: What color furniture would look best in a white apartment? I'm moving into a new apartment in a couple of weeks, and I'm going to go buy a bunch of new furniture. But I'm not too sure as to what color furniture (sofa, tables, dinette, etc.) I should get. What will go good with an apartment with walls that are white, and carpet that is sort of a "dirty" white, but white nonetheless.
Right now I'm thinking the obvious black but what do you think?
Answer: Since white is a neautral color any color will go with it . That is why most rentals walls are painted white . Choose furniture that reflect your personnality. Do you like modern or country??? The main thing is that you get furniture that you like and that you are comfortable with. . Have a fun time shopping and congrats on your move.

Question: What is the best furniture fabric and color for pet hair? What is the best furniture fabric and color for pet hair?
I have an Australian shepherd and two cats. I want to get microfiber furniture (the cats are not declawed). I want to know is this the most durable fabric for my money? Also, what color should I pick so pet hair won't really be too noticeable? I can't really prevent the animals from getting on the couches because they sleep on it at night and during the day when I am at work. So:
Best fabric?
Best color?
Cleaning suggestions?
Also, I do not want to put a furniture cover over the couches. Thanks.
Answer: One good hint of advice----Get a pet throw (couch blanket) for the areas they sleep on, it'll save the furniture. Also a miracle brush to get fur off easily. The blanket can be washed as needed, and a second blanket may be needed to cover all the couch if the dog is up there too. I'd rather get fur on the blanket which is replaceable, than woven into the furniture cushions.
Best color? I'll say gray. I've got a medium brown and things show up on it. Black or white would show fur like crazy. Plaid is ugly, but will disguise the fact some fur is on it.
A loose weave is the worst for cats, it encourages them to dig claws in. A tight weave like most 'furry' upholstery fabrics is pretty good.

Question: Furniture indents on the carpet, best way to get rid of them? We're selling our house and I was just wondering, what's the best way to lift the carpet back up a bit where furniture has been sitting for a long period of time?
Thanks!
Answer: Moisture and Fluffing!
Use a steam iron (don't touch the iron to the rug, it may melt, just get the steam in there) or a mister/ sprayer.
Vacuum to pull the fibers back upright.
Use the edge of a kitchen spoon to rub the fibers back and forth - switching directions as you go.
Mist, Rub, Vacuum, Mist, Vacuum, Rub -- any order.
Question: What living room furniture are good for a high shedding dog? I have an elderly Jack Russell dog who sheds terribly. I am in the market for some new furniture and I would like to know what furniture would stand up to teenagers and an elderly dog whose habits I do not intend to break. Also, I would like to not break the bank on price and I do not want a sleeper sofa. I am not opposed to leather.
Answer: leather or something similar. if you have a fabric that's not smooth, the dog hair can get caught in it and be extremely hard to remove.
