Goji Berries
Question: Goji berries? I've just bought some of these berries from the health food shop, and I love them. Has anyone else tried them? If so, did you find that they made you feel better and in what way?
Sam - I'm sure you'll love them. I've got the dry ones and they're quite sweet, very chewy like raisins and leave a taste a little bit like tea. Wow, something healthy that I like!!
Answer: I didn't have the actual Gogi berries but I bought Goji juice from GNC and I love it! I love it because not only after taking it that I felt energized but my skin has a glow now, it curbed my appetite, and I am starting to look younger. I would recommend Gogi juice to anyone and I can't wait to try Gogi berries. ^_^ I know what you mean! It seemed like everything that I tried that falls under the category of being "healthy" had a nasty taste but with Goji juice, I have no problem ingesting it without a "gag" reaction! ^_^

Question: Does anyone know the Chinese name and characters for Goji berries? Goji berries are used for health purposes and come from the Tibetan/Himalayan region.
Answer: The first type of goji is called Lycium chinense, which grows mainly in Hebei province in China. The berries are small, orange to light red in color, and have many seeds. They are too sour to eat as is, so they are added to foods. Lycium chinense is sometimes referred to as Chinese wolfberry, matrimony vine, or Chinese Boxthorn.
The second, and more important type of true goji berry- the one that is said to have the best effect, is known as Lycium Barbarum.
It grows in various regions of Asia such as Tibet and Inner Mongolia, but nowhere is the Lycium Barbarum goji berry revered more than in Ningxia, situated along the Yellow River between the Yinchuan plain, the Helan mountains and the Maowusu desert in the western part of China.
This tiny fruit revealed itself to be quite possibly the most nutritionally dense food on earth.
Question: what can i do with goji berries to make them taste good? i had some dipped in dark chocolate that were wonderful.
i got a bag of just plain goji berries and they are bitter and nasty,
but they are supposedly really good for you, so what can i do with them. i got a huge bag.
Answer: Goji berries are traditional chinese medicine, so that's why it's bitter. You can create a goji berry drink by boiling goji berries in hot water. Then add some sweetening like rock candy(find them in asian market) or brown sugar to conceal the bitter taste.(^_^)
Question: What exactly are Goji berries & where do I find them? Hi community member's,
What exactly are Goji berries & where do I find them? One of the Super Foods (news article on msn). I have never even heard of them.
I'll return for what I feel is the best answer. Thanks & have a good AM. :0)
Answer: Goji berries are originally from the himylans and are extremely high in antioxidants. This may help protect cells in your body from damage from environmental toxins. They can be found almost every where now. Health food stores, coles and woolies now stock them to. You can also get them coated in a dark chocolate which not only makes them taste even better but increases the antioxidant content. They look like red sultanas but are a little more woody and taste like a cross between sultanas and cherries. If you aren't keen on the woody texture soak them in apple juice and put them in any baking or soak them overnight and add them to your cereal.

if you get good amounts of varied vegetables in your diet, would you still benefit from goji berries? anyone have health benefits from them?
Answer: Overrated, I think. How about trying blueberries, blackberries, dark grapes or pomegranates this summer and fall?
Question: Does anybody know if Goji Berries are commercially grown in the U.S.? From everything I've seen so far, Goji Berries are grown only in China, except for individuals who grow their own. I'm a little afraid to purchase the berries grown in China because of the tainted cat food that killed a lot of U.S. cats last year, and all the other tainted products recently coming from China.
Answer: Revising my earlier reply -- to "yes, they are grown in the States":
From http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2007-02-27/rosenberg-gojiberries :
"Some retailers are even selling the bushes themselves. Seven years ago, Travis Klingler of the Timpanogos Nursery near MANTI, UTAH, started growing goji plants. Last summer, he said, he sold 50,000 bushes for $24.95 each all over the United States.
The seeds and berries are also sold on eBay and Craigslist, and the juice is sold at the national health chain GNC."
:)
Question: Are Goji berries really that good for you? I blew $14 on a little bag of dried goji berries the other day --- was it money well spent or am I a sucker for 'healthy' superfoods promoted by famous people? Any nutritional information would be helpful, as would benefits and how many of those things I'm supposed to eat! Thanks!
Bonus Question: do they come fresh? I can only imagine how much fresh goji berries would cost...
Answer: Goji berries are good for you. And, so are other berries. Right now goji berries are a health food fad.
Enjoy your berries but next time buy some less expensive dried fruit.
Question: I came across an article that shows too many female celebrities are taking goji berries. Why? Is this just another hype or goji berry is that good for real?
Answer: pros of goji berries
The Goji berry provides great antioxidants and may help to fight against cancer.
You can also take in these berries in many ways, including juice, dried fruit, extract, and even tea
con of goji berries
Alternate forms of the Goji berry don’t always have the same benefits of the plain fruit.
Some products make health claims that are false.
The berry may cause problems with those that are taking drugs that thin the blood.
There is no real connecting between losing weight and eating these berries, which is another big disadvantage.
same cons for acai berries.
conclusion
Although Goji berry appears to have some great health benefits, so far there is no evidence to show they’ll help you to lose weight. The studies that have been done do show positive health results, but not weight loss. If weight loss is what you are interested in, you are better off to go with an herbal weight loss product specifically designed to help you to lose weight.
Question: Can I feed goji berries to my galah? My galah loves goji berries can this be the cause of his feather picking.
Answer: There could be loads of reasons for your galah feather plucking but I would probably not give him so much goji berries. They're WAY too high in vit C.
Question: Do Chinese Wolf berries(Goji Fruit)account for the long life of Ninxians? There are a number of health companies which promote goji berries by saying that that they will help you live a long and healthy life.
People in Ninxian Province( a remote area of China near the Mongolian border),like the Hunza and the Okinawans do live a long time and don't get many of the Western diseases.
Answer: Goji juice helps to repair your body at a cellular level. It helps to keep you body clean of acid, toxins, and bacteria. Goji juice balances out your alkalinity. If your body is perfectly alkaline no disease can exist.
Therefore, if you don't get disease, you will naturally live longer. So it is believed that this wonderful berry is why people can live longer. Although, a person does need to watch what foods they are puting into their body. (Not all food is good for you) And you should get regular exercise.
Although this wonderful berry can amazingly improve your overall health, it is not a miracle cure.
