Good Nutrition
Question: good nutrition? what is good nutrition?
Answer: A basic plan that can help educate you about good nutrition is the one developed by the FDA.
The Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that
* Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
* Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
* Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

Question: What is a good nutrition or dietitian school in Vancouver Canada? I'm looking for a school that has a good nutrition program, shorter the better. Can anyone tell me of a school where most graduates end up working in the nutrition field? Thanks very much.
Answer: I have a friend who took a one-year nutrition program at the Canadian School for Natural Nutrition. She really liked it and after one year is a certified nutritionist. Check out the website at http://www.csnn.ca/ She really liked the school and the course and only had good things to say about it.
Question: What to feed my dog so she has good nutrition ? What is the best thing to feed my dog so she has good proper nutrition ?
She is a 12 kilo jack russell and she's 3 years old.
Answer: Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren't safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Before following your vet's food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Another option, if you can't find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here's an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

Question: Are people inside drug rehabs taught about the importance of good nutrition? I'm just wondering, are people inside drug rehabs taught about the importance of good nutrition? I just realized that getting addicted to drugs cause a lot of side effects that harms the body. Are they encouraged to do activities that will help them regain their health back? I'm just curious.
Answer: During their stay in rehabilitation treatment centers, patients are encouraged to live a healthy life. They are advised to be involved in different sporting activities or fitness exercises to help them loosen up a bit. They are given healthy meals and relaxing baths to ensure good nutrition and calm disposition. They are taught by nutritionists about the importance of taking care of their bodies and the benefits of treating themselves right. For more information, you can check out my sources.
Question: What would be a good thesis statement for nutrition? Good nutrition is my topic for the paper now I need help making up a good tentative thesis
Answer: The staus of American Health is in a decline due to the development of a non agraian society. The industrualized nature of our society has created our downfall.
Go into how obesity is on the increase because people can't get off of their fat lazy butts. people were healthier when they had to actually WORk in order to eat...ie. grow food, hunt, gather.
We expended more energy making our food than we do do now!
Question: Whats a good nutrition bar to gain weight and add muscle ? I just returned from vacation and am very underweight im 5'8 and only 115 pounds im looking for a good nutrition bar that I can eat to add alot of carbs and protein so i can gain alot of weight! Anyone know of any good and affordable ones out there because ive never tried these before
Answer: Well to gain weight you need a complete nutrition and workout plan, eating protein bars alone will not increase your weight, the basic plan to gain weight is eating 5/6 meals daily , with 3 hours between them , working out to gain muscle and selecting the best meal to gain weight like Glazed pork chops or Teriyaki chicken , some meal will increase more weight than others.
Question: Logic and reasoning doesn't work, perhaps Good Nutrition would work better to help the religious? Logic and reasoning doesn't seem to work with the religious. I am wondering perhaps if better nutrition would help them out of delusion?

Question: 10 pts best answer - Why is good nutrition so important during adolescence? Why is good nutrition so important during adolescence?
please give a detailed answer
Answer: To help your destined normal growth you need plenty of protein, calcium (milk) and zinc and a deficiency can stunt it.
During adolescence, if you live on junk food and overeat and get fat then you could have weight problems for the rest of your life as your body is still developing and if your genes get used to being overfed then they become weight gaining genes with a very slow metabolism.
A lot of people with a very slow metabolism, that gives them a lot of weight problems, probably overate when they were adolescents. Bad nutrition and overeating during adolescence can give you real problems later on.
Fat adolescents are likely to grow into fat adults.
Question: What is a good nutrition and meal plan? I have been between 160-175 through out my college career and in good shape, but now that i've graduated and college baseball is no longer an option I have ballooned to 205. Although people said they can't tell and still think i look about 180, I know that 205 cannot be healthy. I have looked into nutrition plans and what not... but does anyone have any specific foods i can try. Foods by name... not just "whole grains and fruits"... literally the names of foods or meals i can have. Thanks!
Answer: The standard American diet (SAD) is unhealthy. You need a whole food plant based diet as recommended by Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Dean Ornish. I lost 50 pounds without much effort and kept it off.

Question: How can we educate people more about good nutrition? With all the obesity and eating disorders going on, it seems like maybe we're not educated about nutrition and exercise enough to eat healthy .I know for a fact that they didn't teach us squat about nutrition or weight loss in public school, which is in my opinion a major concern.
But we already have good, healthy food that you can grow in your backyard : fruit and veggies :)
Thanks, I didn't know about Michelle Obama!! That is an awesome thing she is doing.
Answer: I think it's the FDA's and parents' fault, really. They try to get schools to serve healthier lunches (which, by many standards, are still not very healthy.) Additionally, excessive attention is paid to Calories, while very little is paid to what TYPE of Calories are being consumed (i.e. protein, carbohydrates, fats).
The harm of fat is also grossly overestimated, and importance of avoiding simple carbs hardly mentioned at all (most people don't know that sugars are simple carbs, let alone that many of their favorite non-sugary foods also contain simple carbs).
I asked my school why we can't be served whole milk, considering that fat-free milk contains as much as 10 more grams (roughly 2.5 teaspoons) more sugar than whole milk. They said that they have no control over what they feed us.
The other day, we had a school-wide (girls and boys separated) assembly (I'm a senior in high school), where we were handed a tiny flyer telling us how to "eat healthily." It involved a number of moronic comments, including living a low-fat lifestyle with NO MENTION of sugar.
I admit that not everyone has the capacity or desire to understand how their bodies function, but everyone should at least be given the opportunity. Even health classes don't give any justice to a truly proper diet. They make it sound as if you can eat as much of your favorite desert as you'd like, as long as you get your servings of fruits and vegetables, and DON'T EXCEED 2,000 CALORIES.
I can say for a fact that my base metabolic rate is around 2,500 Calories, and that is just the amount I need to SURVIVE with zero exercise while maintaining the same weight.
With the amount of exercise I do (1 hour a day, roughly), I need at least 3,000 Calories a day. Factor in my desire to gain muscle, and I need to eat as much as 4,000 Calories a day.
Education does nothing for people that have not opened themselves up to learning. People need to have a desire to read about it, learn about it, and change their lifestyles.
A large part of it is also parents and how they feed their children. I know kids who have been raised on hamburgers and cheap food, who now think that they can eat McDonalds for the rest of their lives because they haven't gotten pudgy at the age of 17 or 18.
I also know kids who claim that cigarettes increase their metabolisms to the extent that they can eat significantly more. I think much hope is lost, and we'd frankly be better off with many of these idiots dying. If someone doesn't respect his or her body to that great of a degree, I doubt the person's capacity of respecting anyone else.
To finish off on a completely misanthropic and cynical note, some people really should not breath.

Question: Why do people look at apples as the pinnacle of good nutrition? I was looking at the nutrition information on a bag of red delicious apples and there is almost NOTHING there, 10 % vitamin c o_O I mean come on, and sice our bodies only processes a fraction of the vitamins and minerals we put into it, that means we probably only get 1% of our daily allowance from apples
This is a question, not a rant.
Answer: Someone said, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," and instead of looking up the nutrients in an apple, people just blindly believed it.
Same as "red meat is a great source of iron" or "drink your milk to grow big and strong." Doing 2 second of research proves both of these completely false.
EDIT: Hey, Mr. Thumbs Down, I said it takes 2 seconds of research...even you can muster that, right?
