Question: Health benefit of drinking a spoonful of Olive Oil? I am curious what are the health benefit of drinking a spoonful of Olive Oil? Will there be a side effects if I drink too much of Olive Oil?
Answer: Several studies have linked diets that include monounsaturated fats like extra-virgin olive oil to reduced risk of heart disease. And more recently, a study conducted at the University of Granada found that olive oil has been shown to contain polyphenols, a type of antioxidant which may help prevent cell aging and osteoporosis. Polyphenols may also help to reduce risk of developing aging-related diseases, according to the authors of the study Professors Alberto Fernández and Antonio Segura, such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes.
Before you go out and stock up on a case of olive oil, take caution. "We want to encourage people to use healthy fats, like olive oil instead of unhealthy fats, but it's important to watch how much you're adding because of the caloric content," says Colleen Doyle, MS, RD Director, Nutrition and Physical Activity at the American Cancer Society. Doyle explains that olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which is linked to reduced risk of heart disease because it lowers LDL "bad" cholesterol, while maintaining HDL "good" cholesterol.
So how much is a good amount to add? "Everybody's caloric need is different," says Doyle, but cautions that a glass of oil a day is an unrealistic and unhealthy amount. It would increase daily caloric and fat intake above recommendations, which can lead to serious weight gain or obesity, putting you at risk for cancer, high blood pressure, and heart diseases -- or, what you were trying to avoid in the first place.
Pick the purest olive oil. In order to maximize the health benefits of your olive oil intake, make sure you buy extra-virgin olive oil, with an acidity level of 0.8 percent at the highest, says Andy Bellatti, Masters candidate at NYU's Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health. The FDA does not regulate any labeling of imports, but it does regulate home grown olive oil. Check for the International Olive Oil Council seal on imports to ensure olive oil purity, says Bellatti. Though the olive oil will remain a monounsaturated fat no matter what acidity, or what exposure it has, higher acid levels mean fewer, or no antioxidant properties. Over time, exposure to heat, air and light can also diminish the antioxidant properties, says Bellatti.
Bellatti recommends buying canned olive oil that won't be exposed to UV light in the grocery store or in your home. Keep the container sealed tightly. Buy as fresh as possible in small quantities, so the olive oil isn't aged and depleted of antioxidants by the time you use it up. Also, if you want to have the most amount of antioxidants, use at room temperature or cook at low temperatures.
Do not go over board. If Miriam Amash really drinks an eight-ounce glass of olive oil a day, she'd be consuming 1900 calories and 200 grams of fat, without counting whatever food she eats, says Bellatti. Or, about her daily recommended calories, and 135 more than her daily recommended fat intake. "Use olive oil as a fat substitute," says Bellatti, not an additional source of fat.
Question: As part of the auto bail out, the UAW is exempt from the proposed health benefit tax? Health Care Bill
As part of the auto bail out, the UAW is exempt from the proposed health benefit tax that will be upon the rest of the nation?
Answer: That is a proposal that Senator Max Baucus put on the table. Hopefully it will be voted down. A lot of different members of congress are trying to slip junk into the bill.
Question: Can an "employer" lay off someone to collect unemployment benefits, but still pay the employees health benefit? Can a business legally pay the health insurance of a layed off employee who is collecting unemployment? This person was layed off to save the business from paying their wages, but they are still on the payroll to receive health benefits. Sounds shady to me. Any thoughts?
I should clarify. An employer did lay someone off so that they could collect unemployment and the business didn't have to pay the wage. They say it saves the business money if they let them collect unemployment but still keep them on the "payroll" to qualify for the health benefits. Again, the business did this on purpose.
Answer: I don't think there is a law that says an employer can't provide health insurance to anyone they want to. I don't think an employer has the obligation to take anyone OFF health insurance if they are layed off. It would be smart to take them off but not required. Anyone can provide anyone with health insurance as long as both people agree. Layed off or not...there is no obligation to take the person off health insurance.
Question: Is there a health benefit to drinking beer? Hi im a pretty skinny guy 150 lbs but I run and lift weights alot. My question is, does drinking beer have any health benefits? I read in a magazine that it helps you with strong bones and such. My choice of beer is Newcastle, it tastes great and I hear that dark colored beer is better than the lighter ones. Thanks!
Answer: Yes. In small quanities, across the board one beer a day, one shot a day, one glass of wine a day, is extremely healthy for you. Alcohol is good for you. Now, red wine is even better for you because they have an enzyme that is in the grapeskin which are great for your heart, which is good for someone of your stature and workout style. So, yes, beer is good in a small quanity everday, but try to throw some red wine in there once in awhile :)

Question: Question about employers portion of health benefit? I live in NJ and I was working for a private partial care agency. My employer claimed to pay an "allowance" of my health insurance benefit, however I found out she was not paying any of it and I was paying all of it out of my paycheck (I have already resigned). My question is: if an employer offers health insurance benefits do they lawfully have to pay a portion of it? Keep in mind that when I was offered the position it was under the pretense that she would be paying a portion, however I was curious if it is a law that they have to pay some if it is offered.
Answer: Sounds like more of a possible breach of contract between you and your employer. I don't think there are labor laws that say employers have to pay for health benefits if they offer it but there are laws that enforce promises if certain conditions of those promises are met and proven in court.

Question: is there a legit health benefit to masturbation? Not trying to be funny, I had a male friend (i thought he was joking at the time) that said his dr. encouraged it for health reasons. Besides it feeling good and relieve stress are there studies that point out specific health benefits... I know women probably aren't studied that much but is there a benefit for women as well
Answer: As far as I know there are no real studies on this, but many, many years ago I had a job where I worked with a lot of older guys (50s, 60s, 70s) and got to know them and their wives really well. I also had access to their medical records and personnel records.
It was the first time I ever heard of prostate problems, prostate surgery, etc., and after a few years it kind of dawned on me that there seemed to be a pattern here. Almost all the ones I knew that had prostate problems were the ones that I would guess were NOT having a regular sex life. I know this isn't very scientific and relies on just gut feelings and impressions, but I knew these people very, very well for a long time. And the pattern was getting really obvious, to me.
Just like a tool that rusts or doesn't work well if it isn't used occasionally, I have a feeling the sexual equipment, at least in mails, has to be "cleaned and lubed," at least every now and then.
Question: How does having your health benefit added into your gross pay affect you? for instance, a company pays half of a $400/week health insurance. The half that the company pays is added into your gross pay, making it look like you have made more money at the end of the year, when in fact you have not. Is this legal?
Answer: Bad idea for the employer. If the value is treated as income then you pay the entire cost, they you and the employer pay workers compensation insurance Social Security, Medicare and income taxes on the extra $400. You won't be able to deduct enough to eliminate all the income tax and both take the hit on Social Security & Medicare. Better to throw it in as a non-taxable fringe benefit.
