Health Food Vitamins
Question: Holland & Barrett - a good health food store? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to health foods, vitamins, supplements etc so wanted to know if people found Holland & Barrett any good. Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Answer: It depends where you like. Holland & Barratt are a bit pricey. If there's a 'Real Foods' around I'd go there.
Question: Do health foods, vitamins, herbal remedies really help your recovery after taking antibiotics?
Answer: Yes! After taking antibiotics it is very beneficial to repopulate the intestines with the beneficial bacteria (that fight infection and maintain law and order in the gut) that your antibiotic just killed off. These are called probiotics; ie. acidophilus, lactobacillus (sp?), bifidobacterium, etc.
It is also good to support your immune system with herbal remedies that strengthen such as reishi mushroom, and enzymes such as those in the protease family.
Question: of all the vitamins&minerals on sale in a health food shop, what do you think those who work in one, will use?
Answer: I work in one, so maybe I can answer your question. My kitchen counter is covered with supplements. I don't take every one every day, but I take a lot of them.
There is no "one" that is most important. As a physician who shops in my store once said when asked which vitamin should a person take, the answer is "all of them."
Yes, healthy food is essential. But it's not enough.
The reason they are called vitamins is that they are essential to health and not made by the body...they must be gotten from our diet (except for Vitamin D which we can get partially from the sun.)
According to the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, our food has lower levels of nutrients than did the foods from 50 years ago. No matter which nutrient one looks at, today's food is lower.
There are a whole lot of really excellent products out there now. Source of Life multivitamins really work for me. I also love a product called PB-8. It's a probiotic, the best one I've ever tried.
Then there's Miracle 2000, a liquid multi-vitamin that looks horrible, but does a really good job.
Fish oil is another must. Almost everyone, as in 99% of us,
should take a fish oil supplement.
But today, with our poor diets and various health problems, we're really barely scratching the surface. I need cal/mag and St. John's wort and/or 5-HTP. Oh, and let's not forget the digestive enzymes.
Many others will probably need CoQ10, which has recently dropped in price drastically, due to a new facility in TX.
A huge percentage of people in the US, and anywhere antibiotics are popular, need to do a cleanse including one to get rid of yeast overgrowth...in women AND men.
It wouldn't surprise me if this is the #1 cause of our health problems today. It makes us fat, messes up our sinuses bigtime, promotes all sort of digestive problems, diabetes, acne, and on and on.
Without some of those supplements I mentioned previously, and a couple of strong herbs (habeneros pepper and garlic) I would have died a long time ago with Stage 4 cancer. But here I am today...cancer free.
Now here's the irony of it all. I'm home today. Left work early because I could barely walk. I've aggravated a back injury from childhood (broken bones in my back when I was one year's old that healed poorly.)
So something is gonna get ya, one way or the other. LOL!
The best to you.

Question: Why do they have fat salespeople at GNC Health Food/Vitamin stores...? It isn't a very reflective or complimentary image for the product they are selling...What do you think?
Answer: Because all their stuff doesn't do anything, there's the proof :)

Question: The study of vitamins and health? Hi I am interested in studying vitamins and health because one day I would like to own a health food shop.Does anyone know what qualifications I would need and where I can study for them in London ?
Answer: You probably need no particular qualifications to own a 'health food' shop, but the best proper qualification I can suggest where you will gain expertise in food and nutrition would be a dietitian. Not a nutritionist, but a dietitian.

Question: what are the best vitamins to try and take daily? i have been meaning to start trying to take vitamins daily, not a bunch of them but just a couple. i went to a health food and vitamin store today and was absolutely overwhelmed by the variety of vitamins. and if it helps i am a twenty year old, athletic male. im not looking for anything special but just looking for a little added boost to my health. i heard the B vitamins are good for energy, is that true?
Answer: The B1 (Thiamine) aids in energy metabolism (when you eat carbs), the nervous system and the heart.
The B2 (Riboflavin) aids in carbs, fats and protein metabolism, is essential for growth and is good for the skin and the eyes.
The B5 (Pantothenic acid) also aids in carbs, fats and protein metabolism and synthesizes hormones and cholesterol.
The B6 (Pyridoxine) aids in protein metabolism, is essential for the production of nerve tissue, is good for the brain and synthesizing antibodies and the formation of red blood cells.
The B7 (Biotin) also aids in carbs, fats and protein metabolism.
The B9 (Folate or folic acid) is important in the synthesis of DNA and the formation of red blood cells.
The B12 (Cobalamin) aids in energy metabolism, red blood cell formation and helps maintain the central nervous system.
So the B vitamins are good for carbs, fats and proteins metabolism…but FIRST you need to eat those carbs, fats and proteins.
Question: What vitamins/foods are vital to maintaining the health of your hair and scalp? I'm a male and have been growing out my hair for Locks of Love. In recent months, my scalp and hair hasn't felt good at all. My head gets itchy and real sensitive, especially when I pull back my hair to tie it (which is always). I've noticed great amounts strands being combed out and my scalp showing through, too much so. Being a guy, I have to admit, I don't take super care of my hair like the ladies do. I also have to admit, I don't get enough of the healthiest foods and vitamins.
Can a healthy diet be the start of reclaiming healthy hair growth? And what should I get enough of and from what?
Answer: Tying your hair back will cause hair loss too. Use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Hair will only grow about 6 inches a year at its best. That is just nature. A healthy diet helps too. Water is good too. Drink lots. It moisturizes.

Answer: Ok. You COULD be allergic to your shampoo. I recommend you get baby johnson's shampoo. I use it on my shoulder length hair. I have a sensative scalp and found myself having problems so I switched. I use Johnson's conditioner for babies (orange squeeze bottle) that gets rid of tangles. You don't have to use a lot - in fact, every other day or a tiny bit to untangle is enough.
As for diet, start eating more fruits and veggies! You need to make sure you aren't eating junk. DON'T PERM IT - and don't use gels and stuff. Sometimes that stuff will dry it out.
If you go to the pool alot, wet it down before going in the water. That way the chlorine doesn't get to the inner core as badly. You may need a chlorine remover shampoo product in that case.
Question: What drugstores or health foods store can I get Acai berry vitamins at? I know that it has to be processed correctly or else it will loose the nutritional value but can I find it at The Whole Foods Market? or Trader Joe's? or Harry's Farmers market?
Answer: Your two best choices are Sambazon acai juice, which you might be able to find at your local Shaws store; and Acai Slim, of which you can get a free trial at the first source link below.
I suggest you buy some acai juice at the Sambazon online store. They even have monthly shipments you can sign up for if you wish. Get more info at the second source link below.
Question: What foods and vitamins promote good dental health? Something I wouldn't mind having everyday. I like v8 juice.
Answer: xylitol...a natural birtch sugar that reverses tooth decay...the military uses it now in their MRE's...it's sweet and good for you...
Question: Heath food store owner needs help? Hello, i just recently hired about 3 employees on staff here at my Health food vitamin shop. I am wanting to find a TRAINING PROGRAM that would be either free for health food store owners or at low low cost. I am not looking to train them into professionals, but just to get them the knowledge they need to sell the product wisely and impressively. I already am aware of Enzyamtic Therapy. I need some more suggestions though, as many as you can think of. Thanks!
Answer: I think you should set up your own trainig scheme and then see if you can market it to other store owners. Also - how big is your shop that you need 3 new staff?
Question: Where do they come from? The vitamins/ amino acids and enzymes found in capsules from health food stores? With regards to how vitamins and amino acids and things are made and then sold, it's a bit mysterious, leaves me wondering ALOT:
Do they synthesize them and put them in capsules or what do they do most of the time, like for green tea extract, or niacin, or C0Q-10, where do they get these from to put into a concentrated form (and how do they do this, or do they synthesis e it) And amino acids for example, these are the same as protein that is in meat, but it is in powdered form or tablets and then they sell it that way, well where do they get it from? or how do they make it so they can sell it to us? Anyone have any ideas?
Answer: There is no way to tell. Presumably the information on the label is accurate; if they are manufactured in another country than the US, however, especially in China for some reason, that info may not be accurate. Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).

Question: Help me with health food please? I need a health expert or someone who eats really healthy. I can't afford to hire anyone to help with this. My daughter is 14 years old and she needs to eat all her vitamins and required food groups. Could you give me an easy way to make sure she eats well? i.e. a suppliment pill or a multivitamin? She eats very healthy but is still lacking the basic food groups and vitamins. Please help me :)
Answer: First of all, check with your child's doctor right away and see what they recommend. Secondly, your child is still a teenager, so she might seem overweight once in a while, she is still growing.
Avoid processed food, and fast food places. Have bowls of vegetables and fruit around the house so she'll have a healthy snack within her reach. A healthy diet includes carbs, so don't skip them. Instead, substitute white for whole wheat.
As for exersise, try to get her exersise at least 10 minutes a day. Have her take a walk, ride herr bike, take the stairs, or dance to some music. She doesn't have to do a 10 mile jog.
Good luck
