Healthier Decisions
Question: How can I help children in North America make healthier food decisions?
My other questions are getting violations so here's some tame ones!
Answer: Make a commercial where a group of kids goes around and watches what the other kids are eating. When one of the "group" kids sees another kid eating junk food, they scream and yell, "Oh no, you can't eat junk food, it'll kill ya!!!" Then they grab the junk food and replace it with a healthy snack that has vitamins and good stuff in it.
Peer pressure, but in a good way.
sorry, this is just the first thought i had for this question...:)
LOL, Hey, you copied this question from the "featured questions on the home page of Y!Answers!!!!!!! Can't you think of a tame question of your own?
Question: How can you help children in Alaska make healthier food decisions?
Answer: What do I care about the children in Alaska?
Question: i need healthy decisions for some cards for my health class? In my health class we are making board games. The one my group is making has a deck of cards that you pick. There are good and bad cards you could pick saying you made a good of bad decision. I have stuff like "got 8 hours of sleep" and "turned down cigarettes" for good I didn't start on bad decision yet though. I need 10 good decisions and 10 bad decisions can anyone give me some.
Answer: Here are some ideas (you can always change the wording or whatever- they're just ideas! :)
For "good" choices:
- ate several servings of fruit and vegetables
- exercised for 30 minutes
- drank 8 glasses of water
- saw doctor for annual check-up
- turned down drugs
- went outside for a walk
- ______ to relieve stress (you can pick anything like mediation, listened to music, etc.)
- stretched to improve flexibility
- practiced good hygiene
For "bad" choices:
- skipped breakfast
- ate fast food for lunch and dinner
- don't brush teeth regularly
- didn't wash hands after going to bathroom
- drove drunk (or got drunk)
- tried drugs
- had unsafe sex (don't know if that is something your health class covers or not)
- smoked cigarettes
- don't work out/exercise
- got 4 hours of sleep
Good luck!
Question: How do you educate others about healthy decisions?
Answer: Educating and guiding others towards adopting healthier lifestyles (i.e. quitting smoking, losing weight, exercising) is a huge challenge. The key lies in "planting the seed" within these individuals to encourage them to truly want to change their health behaviors and want to become healthy and active. Unfortunately preaching alone won't don't do it. Their motivation must come from within, so the question is how can you instill that motivation within them.
Question: Making healthier food decisions? I am 24 years old, always had a pretty active lifestyle. I am not overwieght, but like anyone else, working full time, I could stand to lose 5 lbs or so...
My goal is to exersize at leat 4 times a week, and I have been successfull for the past three weeks, but my downfall always comes to the food part... I Love Pizza, parmashian goldfish, hOt wings, and LOve alcohol (Every kind)...
I try to eat chicken breast and fish during the week for dinner, but that get's really boring....
What are some good suggestions for meals, to maintain a balanced diet and not get soo bored with it?? Or any good eating tips??
Answer: Here are a few general tips to follow.
With so much 'diet advice' around today it is little wonder if you feel somewhat confused. Whether you are wanting to lose weight, maintain your weight or help your family eat more healthy....these six, simple ideas will help you to eat more healthy.
1 Stay away from the inside aisles When you grocery shop, fill up your trolley from the aisles around the outside the perimeter of the store. This is where the fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh foods are kept.
2 Eat small amounts frequently
Don't allow yourself to get hungry. Keep your appetite in control with smaller meals and healthy snacks in between.
3 Keep close to nature
Fresh is best and generally much better for you than pre-packaged. For example, a fresh potato baked in its jacket is more healthy than pre-packaged "potato au gratin".
4 Experiment and use spices
Get used to cooking with a wide variety of spices. It's possible to get fabulous flavor with spices without adding high calorie fats and oils.
5 Read "fat free" labels carefully
Many "fat free" items contain additional carbohydrates in the form of sugar or fructose to compensate for reduced flavor and can do more to add to your weight than the "full strength" product.
6 Use low fat dairy products
For adults, much healthier as low fat dairy products have the nutrients without the extra fat.
Question: How can I motivate my parents into exercising and eating healthier? They hate exercise and eat awful... what can I do?
I've heard that it's ultimately their decision to undergo a healthier lifestyle, but is there anything I can do to help them?
Answer: Lead by example. Eat healthy around them and offer them whatever you're eating. Invite them to do something fun and active with you. Play basketball. Go for a walk.
You're right that it has to be their decision, but the more you expose them to your healthy habits, the more it's likely to rub off.
Question: How is olive oil healthier than any other type of oil? Hi, my friend was telling me the other day that olive oil was a lot healthier than any other oil, but i checked the amount of calories per serving and it is the same. So why would olive oil be better to have your food than vegetable or corn oil for instance?
I have been trying to start a diet and i am changing my eating habits so i wanna make the right decisions in the choice of my ingredients.
Answer: Simplest way to put it: It all comes down to the "good fats" and the "bad fats". The fat in olive oil is good for your body, while the fat in vegetable oil is horrible for your body.
It's the same idea with nuts. Eating things like peanuts (in moderation, of course) is good for your body because they contain the right fats, but it will still have like 15g of fat per serving, which seems like a lot.
Bad fats would be like cakes, cookies, etc.
Whether it's good fat or bad fat, you still need to remember to eat in moderation. Obviously the less bad fats you eat, the better.
Question: How Do I loose the Temptation for eating Junk Food? My mum buys like Popsicles because there on sale and chips. I tell her to not buy it but she says, well I can eat it. Is there any healthier decisions I can make so I won't eat the Junk Food that's just waiting to be eaten in my kitchen?
Answer: Popsicles are safe to eat, and very low in calories. WAY Better than Ice Cream. As a matter of fact I love Mango, Lemon, or Strawberry Sorbet as an evening snack. About the chips. Look at the back of the bag, it has a suggested serving size. Never eat more than suggested. Portion Control is the key to controlling your temptation for junk food. You can eat it, just don't eat more than recommended.
Question: Is subway really that healthy if you make the right decisions? My sub at subway is 6 inch oven roasted chicken breast of wheat bread. I put no cheese, but have lots of veggies. Tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, mushrooms (if they have them), and no sauce.
If I do get sauce, it is brown mustard which has no fat in it.
It actually tastes pretty good, is it that good for me.
Answer: Well, you have a lot of veggies on there so yeah I guess it is. Plus you mentioned that you don't put any cheese or sauce. So yeah, that seems a pretty good choice compared to some of the other things you could select.
Question: Has anyone gotten sick right after becoming a vegetarian? I recently stopped eating meat just because I wanted to start making healthier decisions. It has been almost a week and last night after dinner I got really sick. Can this be happening from the lack of meat? Has anyone else experienced this before?
Answer: If anything you are going through a detoxificaiton, meaning your body is cleaning itself out. However, you do need protein and the best vegan source is algae, spirulina and chlorella. If you put them in your diet, you will definitely have enough protein. You are on the right track with removing meat from your diet.
Question: Should restaurants be required to serve healthier food? I read an article today about how some restaurants like Applebees are trying to bolster their sales by including "healthier" items on the menu. The article states the belief that restaurants should try to include healthier options on their menu (and calorie counts) so that customers can make a more educated decision about what they are eating. This sort of goes along with requiring restaurants to put calorie counts on their menu.
In my opinion, I think it is stupid to assert that restaurants "should" do anything. Restaurants should sell what they want to sell, and not be mandated to do anything else. Otherwise, we should regulate all food suppliers, banning the sale of twinkies and potato chips because they aren't good for us. It's not the restaurant's responsibility to maintain their customers' weights! People should be able to buy fattening food if they want. When I go out to eat, it's a treat for me, and I don't want to necessarily eat a grilled chicken salad.
What do all of you think about this topic?
Answer: I think restaurants can serve whatever they want -If you are that health conscience go somewhere else. They aren't force feeding you deep fried foods , and red meat down your throat ! I thought we lived in America, not a communist society ! That's what makes America Great ! If you can't count the calories yourself ,don't go out to eat ! the only thing I think that restaurants should disclose is ingredients for people with food allergies on request. Has anyone seen Supersize Me?
Question: What are some healthy food choices for my one year old? I don't want to be the too busy mom who warms up mac and cheese or spaghetti O's for her little one. I want him to have healthy meals to set him up to make healthy decisions later on. I'm just running out of ideas for him. He won't be one until September, but he already is through with me spoon feeding him. Also, I'm so used to watching how much he eats by reading the ounces posted on the side of the baby food jar. How do you know how much food to give a pre-toddler?
Answer: I guess it really depends on how well your baby is doing with eating foods of different textures at this point. I agree with previous posters, soft foods like bitesize pieces of fruit (I'd steam harder fruits like apples and pears bc they can be too hard to swallow if they cant chew well, and cut grapes in half to minimize the choking risk) and steamed veggies. You can make soft things like quesadillas filled with cheese and shredded chicken and just cut them into really tiny chunks. Breads, spaghetti/pastas, hot dogs cut into small pieces.... probably your baby could eat a lot of what you are aleady preparing for the rest of your family to eat. Just be sure that it isnt too hard to chew, and that it's in bite sized pieces. You can give them a portion the size of your palm, and if they want more, let them eat until they are done! You dont have to use extreme portion control, so long as you are feeding them healthy meals and your baby isnt overweight (which your doctor would tell you if it was something you needed to be concerned about.)
Question: Healthier foods in school cafeterias? In ur opinion, should schools remove unhealthy foods?
I don't think so, cuz it should b the students responsibility 2 choose healthier items. Adults can't make all of our decisions 4 us, or else we will never learn how 2 do the right thing.
Answer: I think there should be both, but even the "unhealthy" foods could be cooked healthy I think. You know, better oils, less fat, that kind of stuff.
Question: I made a decision that i am going to live a healthier and better life? Will i stick to it? My birthday is May 2nd, 1995 at approximately 3:35 pm.
I kind of decided that I want to work on myself as a person and improve my life as well.
Will my goals come true? I don't always finish what I start, and I give up a lot, despite me being a Taurus.
Answer: What is it specifically that you want to work on? Your chart shows you have great willpower and determination. You have the ability to stick to your goals but your emotional nature causes an inconsistency in Gemini. Saturn in house 7 (relationships) is squaring moon in 9 and your ascendant. Looks like you might have problems in your home life and with parents and with relationships. You feel like you don't deserve love and have trouble opening up to people. If there are people that are responding badly towards you it is not because you're undeserving but you aren't giving them the chance to get close to you appearing cold or possibly too good for them. Relationships, especially personal ones, can be draining for you because you feel responsible for them. You might feel very restless in one environment and want to travel or get away. Your pessimisim and difficulty connecting with others leads to giving up, you do have Jupiter in 3 which will aide in easing the pessimistic outlook on the world and yourself. You have the ability so keep telling yourself that. Sun in 8 offers regeneration abilities, you're still a teenager so the struggle and confusion is at it's highest now. It does get easier when you get older. I think you'll be fine.
edit: With hard Chiron-Moon aspects, there is a feeling of awkwardness about expressing our emotional needs. These people may easily tell others "I am really fine", and then privately resent them when they can't see the hollowness of that statement! There is a tendency to dramatize the emotions. Depending on the position of the Moon in the chart, this may take place on the inside or might be apparent to others. There can be a "bottomless pit" feeling on an emotional level--a feeling that emotional satisfaction is always just out of reach. Mothers with these aspects may often feel guilty that they are not doing enough for their kids. There can be a tendency for people with these aspects to pour their feelings out, and then feel guilty or awkward about doing so and they proceed to cover it up and avoid the issue.
Question: Can i use my chili recipe and just replace the ground beef with ground turkey? I want to make a little healthier food decisions and I really want to try using more ground turkey over ground beef. I heard you really cant tell the difference between turkey and beef. Right? But i've wanted to make chili with ground turkey how much of a change do I need to do to my current recipe (which I obviously love). Can I still use the beef stock?
Answer: You can tell the difference in taste, but the secret is to season like crazy. And yes, you can use Beef Stock.
Question: What are some healthy and safety decisions people should take in drug use????
i mean illegal or illicit drugs...
Ecstasy and stuff....
Answer: When you say drug use do you mean , controlled substance? Or prescription drugs or over the counter drugs.
1. Never take a controlled substance without a prescription and a serious medical need. Recent example; Anna Nicole Smith/ HK Sterns name on all of them.....
2. If taking prescription drugs follow the directions EXACTLY.
3.Personally I would never take over the counter medication except for aspirin or ibuprofen .
It all boils down to "One mans meat is another mans poison"
