Question: lactobacillus count media and method, How do I get a help? I will be culture and count lactobacillus genus flora in the poultry intestine.
Answer: You will need a specific growth media for lactobacilli called Rogosa. If you think you want to count other lactic acid bacteria, e.g. enterococci, pedioccoci, streptococci, then use MRS (deMan Rogosa and Sharpe) media instead.
Collect your sample (0.1 or 1 g), mix with a saline solution in a 1:9 ratio (10x dilution); then make serial dilutions taking 1 mL aliquotes and tranfering to new tubes with the 9-mL saline solution. This way your dilution tubes will have a 10-fold decreasing concentration of bacteria. Finally you pipet 1 mL from each tube and plate with the appropriate media. Incubate at 34C for 48hs and count the plates with colonies between 30 and 300, to reduce your error. If you count 100 colonies from an aliquote that was diluted 3 times, you'll have 100x10x10x10=100,000 colonies per mL from that tube. Make sure you consider previous dilutions when preparing the sample.

Question: If a yogurt has lactobacillus, will it say so on the label? I bought plain all natural yogurt, but it doesnt say anywhere on the packaging that it contains lactobacillus, does that mean it doeant?
Answer: The biggest problem you face buying that commercial garbage, pasteurized, homogenized, yogurt is that it contains lots of sugar, altered proteins and fatty acids, and very little nutrients in it to allow good bacteria to grow. If it does contains some good bacteria, like lactobacillus, it will be very little.
Lactobacillus bacteria is usually destroyed in the pasteurization process. This is why when people eat or drink pasteurized dairy products they get lactose intolerance. RAW milk and RAW dairy products contain lots of that good bacteria and people do not get lactose intolerance from eating and drinking those products.
The very best thing you can do is what i do, make your own kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, cottage cheese from RAW DAIRY that comes from grass fed cows. The benefits are incredible and it's easy to do.
EDIT: For anyone to say RAW MILK is dangerous is to show complete disregard for the facts. If cows are fed grass, the amount of sugar in the grass is far less than cows that are fed grains that have a high sugar content. The bacteria that gets established in GRAIN FED COWS gut becomes highly inflammatory and causes the cows to become sick and greatly shortens their lives. Milks derived from these cows must be pasteurized to kill all the human pathogens that are produced. In fact, dairy cows fed typical grains instead of all grass end up living 1/4 the life expectancy. Pasteurization does NOT kill all the germs either. It leaves about 2% to 3% bad coliforms that have been identified in about 92% of all crones disease patients.
Here's a great web site to go look at to get a real education about RAW MILK being made the correct way: www.organicpastures.com
There is a lot of psuedoscience being promoted by people that have no clue what they are talking about that have no nutritional training. Look at the facts from real experts. Many of these experts testified in front of the California legislature that tried to ban RAW MILK. The results after the facts were presented was that RAW MILK is not only safe, but superior in many ways to pasteurized milk. The head of the agricultural division in charge of the milk is now drinking RAW MILK from grass fed cows.
good luck to you
Question: When should I take the Lactobacillus Acidophilus? I have to take metronidazole for a BV and I want to take Lactobacillus Acidophilus with it. When should I take the Lactobacillus Acidophilus? Before? After?
Answer: Take Acidophilus with a glass of cold water between meals and store it in the fridge, as heat kills the live bacteria so drinking hot tea or coffee while taking the capsules will render it of no use at all! Taking a supplement that contains both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria lactis helps improve your digestive tract as they work better together. Try to find a supplement that contains at least 5 million live bacteria.
You will need to consider changing your diet - Bacterial vaginosis can be caused by an overgrowth of Candida. Candida are part of bacterial group in your digestive tract that when the colonies grow begin to cause yeast infections throughout the body. There is another question from someone about yeast infections and I've copied the answer below for you - hope it helps!
Yeast infections usually stem from an internal cause, quite often from the digestive system, and then circulate in the blood around the body often making an appearance in the vagina, mouth, in the joints, as athlete's foot as well as many other wide ranging symptoms.
Often women suffer from yeast infections when they have finished a course of antibiotics. This is because the antibiotics kill any beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract, allowing the proportion of 'harmful' bacteria to grow and cause yeast infections. This is often Candida albicans, a very common fungal yeast infection among women which is quite hard to fully get rid of without alterations in diet.
To tackle the infection, it is wise to reduce all sugar intake, and this includes fruit for the first few weeks, as sugar feeds the Candida spores. This can be quite difficult as many foods contain hidden sugar and we always see fruit as quite healthy - it is healthy but not for Candida sufferers. Drink plenty of water and perhaps consider taking a supplement of Caprylic acid (magnesium caprylate), a natural fatty acid derived from coconuts. This will help to kill the Candida but it may take a few weeks if you have had a yeast infection for a while or it is recurrent. Take a probiotic too - bio-yoghurts or Acidophilus - as this will help redress the balance of 'good' bacteria in your digestion.
You may feel a little worse at first but this is a sing that the Candida is dying off. When the infection dies off, it releases toxins into the bloodstream causing occasional headaches, nausea and some tiredness but this will be short lived.
This may seem obvious but try to avoid bread. Bread contains yeast as a raising and activating agent and you don't want to add more yeast, you want to help take it away!
Yeast infections are surprisingly widespread so don't think there is anything unnatural about discovering you have one. They are hard to get rid of but with some resolve, determination and the right diet you'll be yeast free!
Question: Is there any real difference between Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG? According to the Culturelle marketing literature it contains the best and most studied strain of Lactobacillus rhamnosus called "LGG." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus_rhamnosus

Question: Is lactobacillus pills bad for pregnant woman with yeast infections who can't go to the doctor? I bought this nature's secret probiotic pill which has good bacteria that kills the bad bacteria that yeast infections give you. It says for pregnant people not to take it, but if you really need something for this problem, should you take it? What other ways can you naturally get rid of a yeast infection?
Answer: I wouldn't recommend taking it til checking with a doctor to see what they say. I would recommend checking with the city health department to see if they offer a free women's health clinic that can evaluate this further for you.

Question: How does Lactobacillus acidophilus reduce serum cholesterol in the human body? Any website references is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer: L. acidophilus reduces serum cholesterol in an unknown mechanism according to researchers in the article I will site below. However, it is believed that the bile acids are deconjugated in the intestinal tract resulting in poor reuptake of the bile salts (as you may know the body recycles most of the bile excreted into the small intestine). As a general rule, conjugated molecules are more soluble and more likely to pass the plasma membrane resulting in reuptake, so to reiterate if a molecule is unconjugated it is less likely to be taken up by the intestinal lining. The increased excretion of bile (caused by L. acidophilus converted it to unconjugated bile) results in increased synthesis of bile in the liver, the liver utilizes cholesterol to produce bile, if more cholesterol is used to produce bile then serum cholesterol levels will be reduced. Take a look at the article.
