Question: What if a lactose intolerant person continues consuming milk and milk products? I think I have lactose intolerance. I understand the symptoms of bowel movement once milk or other dairy products are consumed, specially in a big amount. Yet, I love milk and milk products and do not plan on giving them up for the rest of my life. My question is: apart from the temporary discomfort after consuming lactose, is there any built-up harm on the long run to my body, like what happens in celic disease for instance? Thanks!
Answer: It doesn't sound like you're lactose intolerant. You may just be a bit sensitive to lactose.
I had issues with lactose intolerance when I was child. My symptoms were stomach cramping and a need to urinate but nothing would come out.
There aren't any long term side effects that I know of, it's just uncomfortable. Actually, they make tablets that can help your body digest lactose. You can buy them at CVS or any pharmacy.
Question: How can you determine how much lactose is in a specific food? I don't see that on any labels? I've checked the labels of cheese, ice cream, ect, and there is no mention of lactose in these products, despite the milk included in them. So there must be another way to determine the amount of lactose. Also, what brands sell lactose free yogurt and cottage cheese? Thanks.
Answer: For those who are very sensitive to small amounts of lactose, there are two options. First, all foods should be carefully checked for lactose. Grocery items such as bread, baked goods, cereals, instant potatoes, soups, margarine, lunchmeat, salad dressings, pancakes, biscuits, cookies, and candy can contain hidden lactose. Even prescription and over-the-counter drugs may contain lactose. The patient must become a label reader looking for and avoiding "milk" and "lactose".
Question: Can you drink lactose free milk without being lactose intolerant? I'm not lactose intolerant but I really like the taste of lactose free milk. Is it unhealthy in any way? Or even more healthy? Will I become lactose intolerant?
Answer: You will not become lactose intolerent, it is just milk lacking lactose, or milk sugars. I use to drink it and seemed to have less digestive upset when I did. It is fine to drink :) Best of luck
Question: Where can I find Lactose free ice cream in the finger lakes region Of New York? My girl friend recently found out she was getting sick from lactose and she loves ice cream, I'm looking for a place around Rochester New York that sell ice cream without lactose so I can surprise her with it. Any suggestions?
Answer: I can't tell you specific stores except Trader Joes. They sell Tofutti, as do some other upscale grocery stores.
Supermarkets that sell Breyer's Ice Cream may also have lactose free icecream.
Carvel or anyplace that makes a soft serve product may also be lactose free. Many kosher products are lactose free - but READ the labels to be sure.
Very thoughtful of you.
Question: Is there medicine a lactose intolerant person can take to eat food containing lactose? Can you get lactase pills to take and then you can eat food with lactose in it?
Answer: Yes, the primary name brand being Lactaid. There are also generic versions of the same drug. I have found that the best way to deal with lactose intolerance is to purchase lactose-free products and to avoid dairy as much as possible. If you must have that yummy, gooey cheesey pizza, use the Lactaid. Every person is different as to the needed dosage and you have to determine yours.
Question: What causes lactose intolerance in people and why does it occur? I am lactose intolerant. I emit rather socially unpleasant symptoms after drinking even a small amount of milk.
I realize that I am physicaly unable to digest lactose, but I am curious as to why being unable to digest something produced by another species, something intended for the newborn of that other species is present or absent in human beings. Are there other species-specific products that do fine within their originating animal groups, are marketed as a product required for the health of human children, but end up making a substantial number of people miserable after ingesting said substance.
Answer: All native-americans are inherently lactose intolerant. When settlers came over, they gave the natives cow's milk to drink and it made them all sick. They thought the settlers were trying to poison them. Also, contrary to popular belief, cow's milk is really bad for cats and can make them sick, too.
Question: What is the difference between lactose free milk and soy milk? my 11 month old has a milk allergy and now starting her on soy milk its so expensive.
i was at the store yesterday and saw lactose free milk and wasn't sureif i could give her that instead
Answer: Lactose free milk is still milk, but without lactose (lactose is the "sugar" component of milk). It is only given to babies who are lactose-intolerant, meaning their bodies can't digest/synthesize lactose. Since it is still milk, it is not recommended for babies with milk allergy.

Question: What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance? Everytime I hvae a glass of milk I feel like I'm going to have you know what, and whenever I eaqt cheese. But I can icecream fine, and frozen yogurt. Could this be lactose intolerance? I don't know any1 in my family that has it, and I heard it's rare in my ethnic group.
Answer: If you can eat ice cream and frozen yogurt, you don't have lactose intolerance. You are obviously reacting to something in the milk, but usually when you are lactose intolerant, you are intolerant to all forms of lactose - including even milk chocolate (but you can eat dark chocolate). Symptoms of lactose intolerance don't usually include vomiting, but do include volumes of gas and very loose bowel movements, bordering on or actually becoming diarrhea. Try switching to soy milk. The ordinary soy milk is a little bland, but they have flavored soy (vanilla is yummy) and chocolate soy. Also soy ice creams, but you say ice cream doesn't bother you, so you don't need to worry about that.
Question: What will happen if you drink a lactose free milk even though you're not lactose intolerant? I am drinking a lactose free milk because I'm lactose intolerant. My brother drink a glass of that milk of mine (maybe a 250mL) then a couple of hours his stomach rumbled( he's not lactose intolerant).Do you think that happened because he drink my milk?
Answer: He'll develop a white mustache and everyone will ask him if he "Got Milk?" Other than that, nothing. His stomach is grumbling because he forgot to eat cookies with his milk.
Question: What is the difference between glucose, fructose and lactose? I've read that fructose and lactose are more complicated sugars.
Is this the only difference?
Are fructose and lactose broken down into glucose by our bodies anyway?
Answer: Glucose and Fructose are monosaccarides and are Isomers of the same chemical formula: C6,H12,O6 the difference between the molecules is the two is the placement of two bonds.
Fructose must be converted into glucose before it can be used by the body. Glucose does not need to be digested before it can be used.
Lactose is a disaccharide (made up of 2 monosaccarides) Lactose is formed when Glucose and Galactose join together in a reaction called dehydration synthesis.
Basically yes, fructose and lactose are converted to glucose to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Question: Has anyone faced difficulties in making cheese out of lactose-free milk? How did you solve them? Last week, I made some farmer's cheese with lactose-free whole milk (being lactose intolerant, I used lemon juice to curdle the milk). The yield was somewhat less than expected, seemingly because much of the curdled milk went thru even 12 layers of cheesecloth. Would using a cloth with a tighter weave solve this problem?
Answer: absolutely, the tighter the weave, the smoother the cheese
Question: Anyone knows if a flan can be made with lactose-free milk? My husband's preferred dessert is flan, but he does not tolerate lactose anymore. I make my flan with Carnation, 1 sweetened can and 1 evaporated milk can. I'm not sure how it will turn out if I do it with lactose-free milk. Any suggestions?
Answer: Definitely. My wife is also lactose intolerant. We make everything with lactose free milk (even ice cream). The Lact-Aid brand is available in everything from whole milk to skim. It works exactly the same.
Question: What are some tips for cutting lactose out of one's diet? I want to try going dairy/lactose free for a while and see if it helps me feel better. However, the task seem rather daunting -- even moreso than when I had to gluten out of my diet.
I am so used to eating cheese with ust about every meal, and I cook/bake with milk, etc. Any tips?
Answer: Try using vegan alternatives to cheese and milk.
Substitute soy milk for milk and margarine for butter in baking, and either just give up the cheese or try some vegan cheese alternatives (they're all non-dairy and lactose free).
