Question: What the hell is that leafy fruit in the Fruit of the Loom commercials? I know the others are apple, grapes, grapes, etc., but what is the leafy one? I can't think of any fruits that fit that description.
Answer: According to Fruit of the Loom, he is known as just a " Leaf ".
Question: What are some really good recipes for leafy green veggies that are natrual? I am trying to stay away from preservatives and frying. I am trying to make some good recipes with leafy veggies that are natural and taste great. Any suggestions?
Answer: My fave: collard greens.
I recommend buying the organic ones because they usually don't have as much grit and dirt, BUT if you can't find organic, buy regular and soak them in water until you get all the grit off.
Cut the leafy part off of the thick stem (goes through entire length of leaf)
Add the greens to boiling water with chopped onion, garlic, and turnip.
Cook until tender...they may take a while.
I like to add umeboshi plum vinegar because it's salty and tart (found in health food stores) but regular apple cider vinegar works well too! Add salt and pepper to flavor!
Question: What do you think about munching on leafy greens as snack food? Americans don't get enough leafy green vegetables, and vegans need the nutrition. I turned to green smoothies with fruits and greens, and that works well. Today I tried to just eat raw kale directly as a snack food. I've been munching on a bunch all day and it's satisfying my hunger while at work.
Is this nutritionally sound? Has anyone else tried snacking on raw leafy greens?
Answer: I love snacking on uncooked spinach, actually! :)
Question: How to get big, full, leafy tomato plants? Everyone else's plants are large, fully, and leafy. What am I doing wrong? Every year my tomato plants just seem weak. I get OK fruit yield, have no trouble with bugs, and suffer no real damaget to the plant, but I end up staking them, and restaking them to support the fruit. They don't get quite as much sun as they should- could that be the problem?
Live in Michigan, lots of trees, no place in yard with more than 8 hours sun at a time.
Answer: BINGO..........tomato plants need LOTS of sunshine and water but not TOO much water of the plant won't get enough calcium.
Water the plant NOT the leaves and pinch off the suckers so that the energy goes into the "fruit', not plant growth.
What are you feeding them? Miracle-Gro makes a great tomato plant fertilizer.
What about the soil? Add some lime to the soil to prevent blossom end rot.
Have fun and enjoy your tomatoes!

PS...I'm in s.w. Fla. and my plants are in direct Sun 8 hrs a day...I just give them more water......yours ought to do just fine in Mich with 8 hrs....Just try to make it direct sun.
Question: What do I do with the leafy part of beets? I bought some organic beets today and they are attached to a green leafy bulky stem. What do you do with the stem/leaf? Is it edible?
Answer: They are pretty bitter and tough. But cooked up the right way, they can be a delicious dish. Here's a recipe:
1 pound beet greens
1 strip of thick cut bacon, chopped
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 large garlic clove, minced
3/4 cup of water
1 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/6 cup of cider vinegar
Wash the greens in a sink filled with cold water. Drain greens and wash a second time. Drain greens and remove any heavy stems. Tear leaves into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
In a 3 qt saucepan, cook bacon until lightly browned. Add onions, cook over medium heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occassionally, until onions soften and start to brown. Stir in garlic. Add water to the hot pan, stirring to loosen any particles from bottom of pan. Stir in sugar and red pepper. Continue cooking until mixture boils. Add greens, reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes (up to 30 minutes for kale or collard greens). Stir in vinegar. (For kale or collard greens continue cooking additional 20 to 25 minutes or until desired tenderness.)
Serves 4.

Question: How do I add more "green, leafy" vegetables to my diet, while maintaining taste and feeling full? It appears from the dietary recommendation pyramid that we're supposed to get a lot more of our calories (?) from green, leafy vegetables. I can accept that they might require more work to be as tasty as meats and carbs, but I'm concerned about not feeling full after eating so much in the way of veggies. Thoughts?
Answer: Well, first of all, leafy vegetables will actually make you feel fuller much faster, because of their fiber content - especially if you're going with the dark leafy greens. I suggest trying to integrate them into your cooking as much as possible.. for instance, try a soup that involves a lot of leafy greens (if you prefer them cooked), or try loading up your salads with them.. perhaps instead of eating meat with veggies on the side, you can make a salad full of dark leafy greens, and just toss some chicken and other veggies on top, with a little dressing.
Question: What alternatives do we have in green leafy vegetables? Since Spinach and now Lettuces are recalled and unavailable in most markets, what green leafy vegetables do we have as alternatives for salads and to provide the essential nutrients that Lettuce and Spinach usually provide in the diet?
Answer: radicchio, kale, spring greens, collards, turnip tops, broccoli, pea pods, dandelion greens, fiddlehead fern (great sauteed in butter), boston bib and buttercurl and romain.

Question: How to make cilantro plants more 'leafy'? I've grown a couple cilantro plants outside in the garden the last two summers. They seem to do quite well and immediately form stalks and start to flower, essentially bypassing the leafy stage. (The leaves you cut up for use in mexican food and such)
Does anyone know how to encourage the cilantro to make more leaves and keep it from quickly forming flowers/seed heads?
Answer: Agree to pinch the flower off. The plant is trying to make seeds with flower, keep it from doing that and it will live longer. As a rule, herbs do best when under fertilized. I give mine a weak solution of fish emulsion (5-1-1). They respond pretty well.
Question: Why do leafy foods always get stuck on teeth? Spinach and other leafy foods, for some reason, always get caught between the teeth or stick to one or two teeth. Why is that?
Answer: If they didn't, how else could we embarrass ourselves publicly by being healthful?
Probably for the same reason wet paper will stick to glass - because the substance is thin and light, absorbs enough water, and the water creates little sealed "suction pockets" that act like suction cups to press the film (the wet leaf) against the tooth.
Question: Are Muslim women in your country allowed to eat green leafy vegetable? In India, even today they eat only tomato or potato, no green leafy vegetables because it resembles a woman's privates and they think it would sexually arouse them. This causes a lot of deficiency along with rickets from being purdah nasheen.
The shape of a leaf.
The Imam's decree it inedible.
Answer: It all sounds rather unlikely to me. But it is perfectly possible to be healthy without eating green leafy vegetables. I hate green leafy vegetables, and hardly ever eat the, but I am quite healthy. There are lots of other things you can eat. What about dahl and lentils and things, they eat them all the time in India.
And anyway, why should something that resembles a woman's privates be arousing to women? Surely it would be more likely to be arousing to men?
