Question: ??????LiFe?????? Ive always wonderd wot the meaning of life is, i know no one knows but could u post your theories as i am very interseted in what u have to say.
Answer: Many philosophers through many ages have debated and theorised about the meaning of life.
My personal favourite is Spinoza's elegant sidestep.
Put in brief terms:
Life is its own meaning.
Cheers.
Question: LiFE!!!!!!!!? Is there anything in life that u wish that u could go back and change. not jsut like anything but like something embarressing that you are like omg y did i ever say tht or y did i ever do that. if so tell me what it was.
Answer: oh man! I could write a book!! Well there was the time i decided to date a 16 year old when I was 22, then the time I was so in love I stole from the store I worked at for a girl, then the time Itold my gf (who I loved to death) that I slept with someone else when I really didn't and she broke up w/me and got pregnant by some jerk who's in prison now...
Oh then the time I told everyone at work that I was gay, in some misguided attempt to befriend this woman which got me fired!

Mistakes? I got plenty!!
Question: What is the difference between private life and public life? Most of the stars talk about private life and public life ? How can we make out their real life,Private life and public life ?
Answer: I am not famous and that's just as well. But I say all fame is not the same. Movie and music stars can become overwhelmed by "public life" and the papparazzi (Photojournalists ) check out stories a few years back on Britney Spears...I am no particular fan but I felt sorry for her. She could not even have a nervous breakdown in private.
If we hop over to politics, and some celebrities do this, one must make speeches, appearances, funerals, building dedications, press conferences, write articles or books, appear on various talk, news or variety shows, and go on campaign tours to raise funds and get elected. And if you have any bad habits like drugs, heavy drinking, sex with younger men or women on the side, or are gay and not yet out, this may well be all spelled out in detail. Our new Pres is said to be guarded by the largest and most sophisticated personal security group ever in US history. So not much private life for him....hopefully a few hours with his wife some nights.
Question: How is life and death related to the four seasons or the tree of life? How is life and death related to the four seasons or the tree of life?
I saw this on a website and not sure I understand.
Thanks!
Answer: According to Christian orthodox the Garden of Eden had 2 (specific) trees the first was the tree of life which Adam and Eve ate from on a regular basis to insure their immortality. The second was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (which we all know god said not to eat from and the snake, and all that jazz). When Adam and eve ate from the second tree they were expelled from the garden, thus they were then unable to eat from the first tree anymore. Therefore they became mortal, they were able to die.
The seasons then become important because Adam is damned to plow fields and face hardships to gain food and provide for his family. Thus he must pay attention to the seasons to understand when to plant his crops, harvest, expect rain, etc…
Furthermore, many non Christian faiths view all time as cylindrical rather than linier. When they look at winter as a death, spring a rebirth, etc… this is what gives some faiths foundations for the idea of an afterlife or reincarnation. Because just as a tree will die in winter and be reborn in spring so will the human body die and the spirit be reborn. They do not feel that there is a beginning and an end but rather an ongoing cycle, like the seasons.
Question: How do I make my life more important than my job? About 6 months ago there was a major change in my life, and now my job is my life, and my personal life took a back seat. I now have a young baby and a wife happy with her work. I hate my job, and it really has become my life. How do I get back to where I was where my life was what I focused on, not my career. I started my first "career" a few weeks after my baby was born, but since then, my job was too important, and I don't like what I do. I am still in college and I have a few weeks to change my major, should I find a new career, and if you think so, how do I find out what I'm really meant to do?
Answer: Why be in school and have a job (other than part-time) at the same time? That's just asking for trouble. Start a business or something at home and don't rely on The Man for either a job or happiness. Make your own way in life and be your own boss!
That's what I'm attempting to do.
Question: How is life in Canada different from life in the United States? How is life in Canada different from life in the United States? How is it the same?
Any cultural aspect, for any group of people.
If you've lived in both I'd love to hear what you think!
Answer: I live in Canada and my sister lives in the U.S. for school, so I have somewhat of an idea.
Superficially, the countries are very similar. By that I mean if you were picked up and placed randomly in a Canadian city, you likely would not be able to tell if you were in Canada or the U.S. Our media is also the same (Canada gets all the American media as you are much better at producing T.V. shows than we are; there are some good Canadian shows but these are usually shown in the U.S. as well).
There are, however, many subtle differences.
Firstly, Canada is more left-wing than the U.S. The greatest reason for this is that we have the most educated population in the world (1) and a much higher proportion of immigrants. These groups tend to be more liberal in their values and do understand the benefits of social systems. While Canada is not as left-wing as Europe, we are without question left of the U.S. Our healthcare system is universal (though I personally would support a two-tiered system like those seen in Europe) and our education is highly subsidized by the government (our top universities have a tuition of around $6000, which is much lower than top universities of the States). There are other social programs as well.
Secondly, as a result of these social programs, the safety net in Canada is far more comprehensive and we therefore don't get the poverty nor crime seen in many cities in the U.S. I will use a specific example: Toronto and Chicago are very similar cities - similar in climate, economy, and size to name a few. In Toronto, however, the "ghetto" is the neighbourhood at Jane St. and Finch Ave (an intersection). It is a relatively small area and there are other small pockets throughout the city that are less than ideal to live. Contrast with Chicago, where the entire "south side" is notorious for gangs and crime. Furthermore, due to tighter gun laws in Canada, crime in these cities in contrasting as well. The homicide rate of Toronto, in 2004, was 1.8 per 100,000 people, compared with 15.5 in Chicago (2). As seen on the chart for that website, all major Canadian cities are lower than American cities for the homicide aspect.
Thirdly, Canada is well-kept in comparison because Canadians pay higher taxes and, consequently, complain much more about cities looking "dirty". Therefore, infrastructure (roads, airports, etc.) tend to be newer in Canada in GENERAL, but the trade-off is higher taxes. These higher taxes also fund the social programs that make Canada more left-wing than the U.S.
The last point I will mention about the differences are those seen in personal values and religion. Americans, from MY understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) tend to be more religious and therefore conservative. Religion does not play as important of a role in Canada as the high number of immigrants brings a huge variety of religion that people practise on their own accord. This is part of what makes Canada so diverse and accepting and therefore is seen as a "Salad Bowl" vs the "Melting Pot" of the U.S. where immigrants tend to assimilate into the American culture.
I Love the U.S. and I love visiting it; I think it's a terrific country that brings so much to the world (and I feel very safe knowing it is the clear military superpower) but I do believe the quality of life in Canada is higher and this is, I believe, fully related to our more left-wing position relative to the U.S. and the diversity and acceptance that comes from being highly made up of immigrants.
Question: What is the difference between eternal life and ordinary life? Eternal life suggests what? Is such thing is available on earth? Can normal life be considered as ordinary life? Is Eternal life related to heaven?
Answer: No relations in eternal life. No blood relations, no father, mother, sister, brother etc.,
Question: How important is animal life to you? Nice Guy Wrote in a previous question: “Matt has basically stated that animals are equally important as humans. I'm sorry, but no animals life has as much importance or relevance as that of a human. For one to think that an animals life is just as important as his own is absurd. Can anyone possibly believe that the life of a pig, cow, or chicken can even compare to the life of a human being?”
How do you feel about this? Does an animal's interest in living have any weight in our deciding how we treat said animal? How is an animal's interest in continued existence qualitatively any different than our own?
I'm not trying to give Nice Guy a hard time, I just think this is something that should be discussed, and his answer provides a good starting point.
We have some real deep thinkers responding so far.
Beebs' Answer sort of misses the point of this question. But to the point it does adress I could not agree more.
What I would like people to ponder is that animals have the same interest in their continued existence that you do yours. We have no morally relevant reason to respect a human's interest in continued life wile denying to afford animals the same consideration.
@ Niceguy, I wrote you a responce but it is too long to fit here. You can find it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/veggiefacts/message/58
Take care
-Matt
@ Nice guy: I’m fairly disappointed in your last post. If you want to debate these issues then lets go. If not, then don’t pretend to engage in one and then back out mid discussion. You say “I believe my goal of simply reducing animal suffering to a minimum, is simply more realistic than that of abolishing it.” And I give you plenty of reasons (and there are plenty more) as to why that will never happen, which you make no attempt to address. You also say, “And though veganism can perhaps make a very small difference, I don't think it can, will, or ever has lead to any significant noticeable change.” I find this a very curious statement to make seeing as the term “Vegan” has only been around for about seventy years, and the theory of abolition has only been with us for thirty years. Animal welfare on the other hand has been around for at least two hundred years, or if you consider India then around 2000 would be more accurate...
I fail to see your historical basis for making the claim that Veganism and abolition cannot create change, it has not had the chance to. Finally, a Vegan diet (or very near Vegan diet) can work for everyone. Read the China Study. Also who are these “credible sources” that claim to be against a Vegan diet? Name names, I’m sure it would be interesting to see just how credible they really are.
First, in response to your comments regarding the health of Vegans, I used “very near vegan diet” in parentheses after the words “Vegan diet” The near Vegan diet was referring to Dr. Dean Ornish’s early work in reversing heart disease. The “Vegan diet” which appeared out of parentheses referenced all other works by prominent scientists such as, Dr. T Colin Campbell, and Dr. Neal Barnard. Even the American Dietetic Association agrees that a Vegan diet is completely healthy by saying, “Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy,
childhood and adolescence.”
Second, with regard to your “intuition” about the animal rights movement, I guess we are just expected to take your opinion because you do not “foresee” a radical change in people’s diet? I think you were right, we are done here in regards to Animal Rights Vs. Animal Welfare.
. You obviously are ignorant to even the most basic augments from each side, let alone the state of the movement and the struggle that is taking place for the grass-roots sections of the movement to beat back the corporate welfare groups that have done nothing but retard growth. In sum, your information about the healthfulness of Veganism is outdated at best, misinformed at worst, and your “intuition” about the possibilities and direction of the Animal Rights movement is just plain wrong.
Answer: I recently saw pictures of a Hurricane Katrina animal rescue. I saw houses that were destroyed, and next to the house, would be a dog, tied to a steak.... It made me SICK. Thinking of it now brings up so much anger in me. What kind of depraved person would do that. It was not as though there were seconds left, and they were going to be beamed out by Scottie in immediately. There was a long, slow evacuation process, and they left those animals to slowly die.
If your house is burning down, you try to save your animals. I will say though, that you save your children first. But you bring an animal into your house and under your protection, you better care for it.

I once had to do a report on the Psychology of Slavery for an African American Lit class. One thing I noticed through my reading was that slaves verbally lost their human status. They were often called animals. I decided to do an extensive survey about this, but the only group we verbally do such a thing to today is actual animals. We call one “pet” so we know to love them. The other we call “animal” so we can distinguish not to care about them and believe we have a right to torture and kill them. After the animal is killed, we call it “meat” so we never have to make any mental correlation.
My search was to find where we draw the line as we have done this to groups of people over and over again throughout history. I am just saying the same mental process people used to go through the African American Holocaust is the same mental process we use to make animal slaughtering ok today. It is something we click on and off, and the words we use to describe a being have a lot do to with it.
I had many categories in my survey, which I gave to the students in all my classes.
One section was “Animals.” I had questions such as:
“Would you eat a cow?”, “IF you were starving, would you kill a cow to eat?”
… eat a dog, starving, kill a dog, kill your OWN dog
I even went on to compare animals to people.
I found that many people, in a hypothetical world, would kill a human stranger before killing their own dog... and yet, would eat a dog if they needed food. Familiarity and how much we are willing to know about an animal has a great deal to do with things.

Another tool we use is how to condone such behavior is understanding. Understanding does not mean language, but culture. If we had not yet discovered the other hemisphere (I’m in the U.S.) and we set on a voyage to France. We would not be able to understand the language, but the culture would be similar enough to our own that we would consider them *like us* aka, civilized society.
If we went to a place where people lived of the land, half naked or naked, in small tribes (and we had not been exposed to this before) we would label them as *not like us,* uncivilized and animal like. This is historically accurate, so you know it is true.
We grow up with dogs. We can tell they understand us; culturally, we have come to understand when they are happy and sad; we have come to know they feel pain, and we feel for that pain. We know no such things of cows.
If human culture had made different choices in history and randomly decided to have cows or pigs living in their homes, and decided to eat dogs/wolves, then we would be giving our pet pigs presents on Christmas and have cats and dogs in factory farming without every questioning.

I am sorry I got so very very off track, I have just put a lot of thought into the value we place on life and its relationship to language and culture.
To answer your question, I believe life is important, and no living creature deserves to suffer needlessly. Yes, an antelope is going to suffer when a lioness or what have you kills it, but that death needed to happen. However, as a human, I suppose I do consider human life more important. If I was in a hypothetical situation where someone was going to kill me or kill my cat, I would choose my cat (sorry Simone!) But if it was kill me or kill my nephew, I would choose me. The optimal situation is of course that I save me, my cat and my nephew, but that’s not what hypotheticals are all about.
If the situation was torture however, I would have a difficult time condoning the torture of another at all.
What all this means on the grand scheme of things? I have no friggen clue. You wanted discussion, so I rambled my behind off like I have never rambled my behind off before.
Just email me if you want me to take this long rant off your question.
:)
EDIT: Yes, I believe animals have the same interests in continuing to exist that I do. I believe they don't want to be tortured, and they don't want to die. (Who would?) I believe they protect their young; I believe they mourn; I believe they fear; I believe they suffer, and I believe they want.
Question: How many lives have life-jackets on planes saved? I've just got off a flight from Birmingham to Edinburgh. Considering this flight is mostly overland (if you forget the Firth of Forth), it seems strange that at least half of the safety briefing is about how to put the lifejacket on.
So while there are lots of statistics about how many plane crashes there are and how safe air travel is, I would like to know how many lives have ever been saved by those yellow life jackets? I'll bet it's very few.
I know that that plane might make journeys over water, but I meant for global air travel overall. I also appreciate that falling out of a plane from 13,000ft is not survivable even into water (unless you are the Hoff).
The assumption is that a plane will be able to crash land into a body of water in a controlled fashion that will allow the passengers to enetr the water and use the lifejackets to stay afloat until rescuers arrive. I doubt many people have ever survived a plane crash and thought, "few, if it hadn't been for that life jacket I would have been screwed!"
Answer: Enough to justify it, the Potomac river crash in 1982 springs to mind where the aircraft crashed on takeoff and into the river. If an aircraft can make a controlled landing on to water in some of the cases the aircraft does remain intact.
You will find that most safety equipment is there due to some accident in the past where the result was to put a piece of safety equipment on board. Seats are now made with fire resistant material due to the Manchester aircraft fire in the early 90's. where many people died due to toxic fumes Seats now have to meet very stringent load requirements due to a number of accidents where the crash was survivable but the seats failed and everyone was crushed to death at the front of the airplane. No smoking and smoke detectors in the toilets due to the loss of a couple of airplanes because of fire, and of course the reinforced bulletproof cockpit doors due to recent events.
The aviation safety industry is more reactive than proactive, I work in it, and it can be frustrating.
Just after I answered I did a quick search, here is another example where they are useful, not everyone survived, but if you can save one it is worth it http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/06/world/main763649.shtml
And here is another

Question: What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and your perspectives? Many people claim that books have changed their lives. For you, what was the book that you fully read and understood and noticed that it had an effect on your life? What book made you want to change for the better? What book made you realize the meaning of life? What book changed you as a whole?
Answer: I don't think there is a master narrative that told me how and why to live. However, books seem to help me on my way wherever I go.
For instance, Rebbeca by Daphne DuMaurier made me love the classics. Sula by Toni Morrison made me appreciate my mother. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen made me understand my father. A love for the Harry Potter series gave me something in common with my sister. My husband initiated our first conversation with me at a cafe because I was reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and he had enjoyed the book previously.
However, if you want a book that will change your life without any outside factors, Siddhartha is a good one. Herman Hesse also wrote a book called Demian that I think is pretty good as well. If you read both, I think they're bound to change your life.
Question: How can I cleanse my life and start all over? I have pretty much messed up my life pretty bad for a 19 year old girl. Nothing that super bad like i killed someone or became a heroine addict, but pretty bad stuff like cheated on my husband and lied to my parents when was younger and used men for the stuff they gave me. You know the bad stuff. Well, now I really want to change. I want to stop living a double life and be honest to everyone in my life. How can I start my life over with good intentions?
Answer: This isnt going to be easy girl. What you need is a transformation from deep within the core of who you are(meaning your heart and soul). Heres a test: start trying to put other people's needs before your own.
If you can do this then you will start on the road to changing who u are from within. Also go and give a meal to a homeless guy or lady sometime . These small acts of kindness can make a dramatic impact on you.:)
Question: My life sucks and i have nothing to live for, how can i help others? I have been thinking and i am unhappy with my life, although i have everything compared to others. I want to travel across the world and help people that have nothing, or do something that will help in some way. Is there an organization i can join or anything structured programs? Im just wasting my life when i can help others.
I don't want to do anything simple i want to save starving Africans.
Answer: If you cant help yourself. You have no buisness trying to help others.
Question: What life forms would appear, when the will for evolution is stronger, than the vital demand for stability? Like all life forms also man as a self conscious being is bound to the vital demand for stability. Normally evolution appears, when this stability is being destroyed by influernces outside of that life form. So man, too, waits, till that moment arrives.
Only being self conscious, he is also aware of a more or less strong will to evolution.
How would you imagine a future being, its forms and its constitution, maybe beyond man, as we know him, whose will for evolution is stronger than his demand for vital stability? Please consider also political, social, psychological, physical aspects of it, if you like?
Answer: We will become children of the light, in the light only are truth, and life force, the Darkness will no longer shed its evil upon the intellect of the human race. Positive and negative, are necessary to form the physical, the duality of Mankind. Truth can not be found on the physical plain, but in that it is "it is" truth is of the light, and is not of the physical realm. I feel that this happens at death. So hurry up an evolve.
Question: How can a life coach support battered women powerfully rebuild their lives? I had heard of an organization in Southern Calfornia that supports women who have been battered to create completely new lives with a job and home using hair stylists, therapists, coaches, home renovation folks, etc. The particular organization (which I can't remember the name of) already had a life coach that was providing support for their particular area. I'd like to find another organization in Southern California where I could volunteer my services. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
Answer: Life coaching for women who have been battered is a great idea and awesome that you want to volunteer in that capacity! Here's a (long) list of over 150 agencies that specialize in domestic violence services in California:
http://www.safenetwork.net/directory.cfm
and a list of California domestic violence shelters:
