Question: What is the best calcium supplement to take? There's so many out there...... liquid, tablet, gel capsule?.... calcium citrate, lactate, gluconate, carbonate?.... combo? taken with fatty acides? with vitamin k or no vit k? 1100 ml or less than 500? 1 or 2 does??
Answer: Since the others covered the type, I'll answer the rest of the questions.
Ideally, capsules or softgels should be taken for Calcium because tablets are the hardest form to break down and require more stomach acid. Most people taking acid-blocking prescriptions aren't able to digest much of any tablets because of that.
The ideal Calcium product would be in a combination, especially a combination with Magnesium, Boron, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Silica, Zinc, and/or Ipriflavone... those are the main nutrients that help the absorption of Calcium. Not all are required, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications or have thin blood (then you'll want to look closely at the Vitamin K content). Also, ej is right that weight-bearing exercises help to promote bone strength.
For dosage size, you don't want to take more than 600 mg of Calcium at any given point in time because that's the most your body can absorb at once. If you take more than 600 mg at once, the rest could be deposited elsewhere in your body (including the Kidneys and arteries, even if it is Calcium Citrate). Since the RDA for Calcium is 1,000 mg, 2-3 doses are typically preferred... you won't find any good Calcium product that only recommends 1 dose per day (it would either be too high of a dose or not enough for the day).
Some people are recommended more Calcium throughout the day than others, but those recommendations should still be followed for optimal absorption. Good luck!
Question: Freshwater Aquarium Calcium Supplement? My plants are suffering from calcium deficiency (i researched)
How do i replenish the calcium (other than lots of water changes (i think that works))
I take calcium supplements in the form of pills, if i cut a SMALL BIT, turn it into liquid form, and dilute it, will that work?
its happened twice already.
Answer: I don't know how you came up with this but, a product called "Flourish" is a complete plant food for the aquaria has a host of trace minerals in it and should be sufficient for the plants. I myself don't use it anymore and my plants flourish enough to need to trim back every 4-6 weeks. I don't add any supplements except for maybe twice a year especially during the cooler months here in Hawai'i. Never add supplements even a little, made for human consumption to the aquarium. Check your water quality, lighting, pH, nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia levels regularly because, not just fish are affected by these but plants too.
Question: How to digest calcium? Hi all,
Does anyone know of a food/liquid that can digest calcium better?
I've been taking these calcium supplements for about a month and its caused severe constipation.
I've stopped taking them but still there is discomfort.
Any ideas?
Thanx
Answer: According to Dr. Oz on Oprah, you need to take magnesium with your calcium to counter-act the calcium side-effects. (Oprah had the same problem)
Question: Good calcium-magnesium supplement that really builds bone? I can't take meds for bone loss because of my kidneys. I need a calcium-magnesium supplement that is easily absorbed, such as a liquid or capsule. Osteo Pro Care makes me too gassy. Hard pills aren't absorbed well; I might as well eat chalk. I can't eat much dairy and don't think it's very healthy anyway. Have any women had measurable success with any product? Price isn't an object.
Note: I'm already taking high doses of Vitamin D. I know that calcium needs other minerals to be properly absorbed, but I would like a brand name, please.
Answer: You have made an incorrect statement in your question. You state that hard pills aren't absorbed well. Well that may be true for calcium carbonate, ie: tums, coral calcium, oscal and others. This is a poor form of dietary calcium. Others like calcium citrate, ie: Citrical, is a very well absorbed form of calcium. I would get the tabs with vitamin D. Take 2 in the morn, 2 in the evening. Your bones will thank you.
Question: can Cal Mag be taken along with a multivitamin? We are advised to take a Calcium-Magnesium liquid supplement with meals. We also are advised to take other supplements such as a multivitamin with meals. Does the Cal Mag interfere with the absorption of the vitamins?
Answer: No, it does not interfere with vitamin absorption.
Question: Is osteoarthritis and osteoporosis something just women get? I am wondering if there is a "best", or most effective supplement that can be obtained over the counter for help with control of the effects that this condition has on the hip and legs? Can men get this disease, and if so, can liquid calcium and glucosemine supplement help? I was trying to find something I could get for my husband that might work. Thanks to all who answer.
Answer: Men definitely get these illnesses. Calcium supplements with Vitamin D will help with the osteoporosis for anyone and if that is not enough a physician can assist with medication. Osteoarthritis is the common form of arthritis, as opposed to rheumatoid arthritis which eventually causes deformity in joints and is quite debilitating. The previous is usually caused by normal wear and tear on joints, especially weight bearing joints such as hips, and knees, although hands and fingers are also quite prone to the disease.
Glucosamine - chondroitin (may be spelled differently) can make a difference and weight control also serves to lessen stress on joints. There are many prescription medications which help with this condition as well.
Good luck.
Question: Calcium buffers for marine aquariums? Right now I'm using a one step calcium buffer system called Kent Marine Liquid Reactor. It works but it seems as though it leaves a chalky residue on the rocks over time. Does anyone know of a better calcium and buffer supplement I could use?
Answer: Aragonite substrate and live rock.
Full of calcium and stablize your tank.
Don't use chemicals if at all possable.
Question: How much does morning coffee affect absorbtion of medicines and supplements? With morning breakfast, how much does caffeine/coffee affect the absorbtion rate of medicine and nutritional supplements-- multi-vit, liquid calcium, magnesium, acidofilus, B12 and Omega 3,6 &9??
Answer: Your good. No more than 3 and if can do with least amount of sugar would be better. Only one it is affecting alot is the Multi-vit. But Omega 3 will make up for it along with your intake. So not much at all.
Question: Can you feed rats vitamin, calcium, manganese etc where yo get from healths store/chemist/supermarket? I have just been looking at a homemade rat diet by Debbie Ducommum and a few of the ingredients are like supplements like calcium and that, can rats actually eat them?
This is the website for the homemade rat diet:
Recipe for Molasses Mix
(will last two rats about a week depending on size--for more than two rats, you can multiply the recipe)
1500 mg calcium from chewable tablets or liquid calcium with vitamin D
2000 mcg chromium picolinate
250 mcg vitamin B12
40 mg manganese (from capsules)
3/4 C Total cereal
1 lb packaged (not bulk) soft tofu
4 t shelled raw sunflower seeds
1 T flax seeds
3 T raw oatmeal
4 t pearled barley
4 t millet
3 T cooked brown rice
4 T toasted wheat germ
2 1/4 T nutritional yeast flakes (5.6 g)
2 T blackstrap (dark or full flavor) molasses
Soak the chromium picolinate, calcium, and B12 tablets in a tiny bit of water and when soft, crush. Coarsely crush the Total in a plastic bag. Mash the tofu in a bowl. Add all ingredients together with warm molasses and mix thoroughly. Store covered in the refrigerator or freezer.
Answer: Yeah, you just follow her directions. She's a well respected member of the rat community, and has been working with rats for years. Rats need vitamins and minerals just like humans do (although not really vitamin C, as humans and guinea pigs are the only furries that can't synthesize their own)
Question: What are the pros/cons of drinking only water? I would still eat food, just cut out soda, milk, juice, etc.? I am curious what would happen if I stopped drinking all forms of liquid except for water for say...a year. I could easily supplement calcium and other necessary vitamins and would still eat a normal, relatively healthy diet. Would this have a great impact on me physically? Would I be that much healthier? Would it actually have adverse effects on me?
Answer: Drinking water offers many benefits including weight loss (check out the article using the link below).
I think cutting out soda is a great idea but I would still include milk in your diet. Studies show that low fat or fat free dairy products helps with weight loss as well.
Question: Crested Cecko needs...? So I am going to update my Crested Gecko cage from a plain old small fish tank to an Exo-Terra tank, its actually kinda nice I guess. What else should I buy for him? Calcium supplement, heating pad, type of lighting, Thermometer, types of liquid supplements, 'hide-outs', etc,. I do have the basic needs for him obviously, feel like updating his environment. I am also on a budget of a max. $150. Thanks to all you reptile fans!
Answer: Look for a used Exo-Terra tank if anything, they are a lot of money. ZooMed also makes a similar type of tank.
You want at least 18x18x18, if not larger. The taller, the better.
You do not need heat, as long as your house stays in the mid 70's (anything above 80 is harmful).
I keep a thermometer and hygrometer in my tank at all times, to monitor temperature, and to monitor humidity. You can provide them with a light during the day if you'd like to stimulate daylight, but this isn't mandatory. Mine are kept in a darker area, so I use a normal florescent fixture from home depot to light up their tank.
Branches, vines, and other things that can extend to the top of the tank are great for them. They are arboreal, so they will not hang out on the ground.
Supplements, you should be feeding Crested Gecko Diet, which contains most of the nutrition the gecko will need. If not, you should look into getting this. It's healthy, and the best diet. It can be picked up at a local store, or ordered from PangeaReptile.com (They offer a 2 part one, which gives it flavor - mine prefer this).
If you are dusting, dust live food about 2 times a week with pure calcium, and about once every other week with calcium w/d3. Once a month you can use a multivitamin.
Here is an excellent careguide:

Question: Calcium supplements? Does anybody know if you can get calcium supplements in an alternative form to the chewable tablets? Can you get a liquid version, or a dissolvable tablet?
Thanks
Simply drinking more milk is not an option - im asking due to a high calcium deficency and the person who needs it needs high dosages in an easily swollowable form. This person is old and repeatedly forgets to ask their GP.
p.s. thank you to those of you who decided to tell my why we need calcium and what it is for etc. That was not my question, i am perfectly aware of the uses of calcium. I simply want to know about different supplements.
Answer: Supplements can be expensive. As for liquid calcium, well; the best source I can think of is "Milk", and it's cheaper too. Just drink Milk.
Question: How much sorbitol will cause diarrhea in 23lb 2yr old toddler? My daughter is taking Liquid calcium as a supplement since she doesn't drink milk. I just learned it contains sweetener called sorbitol which is known to cause IBS and diarrhea. My daughter had chronic diarrhea for 9 months now. She was taking this. What dose would give her this diarrhea. She takes 3 tsp of calcium a day. I think i tsp contains 0.4g of sorbitol. How much would affect her little body?
doctor knows about her diarrhea. he is not much worried..i am though. so i am doing research and also fructose malabsobtion could be her problem. i am taking her to the doctor i just wanted to know how much sorbitol is a problematic in toddlers.
calcium was prescribed by doctor. he knows about her diarrhea. he tested her for food allergies and didn't find any.
Answer: Please talk to your pediatrician or nurse for the best information. Diarrhea can be very dangerous. Tell your Dr. right away.
Question: How to treat pneumonia in crested gecko? About three weeks ago I took my gecko to the vet because he was losing weight and he had a strange shape to his mouth that seemed to form overnight. I found out he had MBD and I have taken appropriate measures as directed by the vet to supplement him with liquid calcium and change his diet which was too high is sugars. I also shortened his aquarium to half its size during the treatment. During this time I think that his aquarium became too moist because of the reduced ventilation caused by altering his cage. (I had a screen top that I added to a 10 gallon aquarium to double the size of the tank.) To combat this I have reduced misting and added a heat pad to the one side of the aquarium to try to keep the humidity down a little. I am planning to take him to the vet within the next two days, however I am curious as to what his treatment will be if he does have pneumonia and if there is anything else I can do for him at home. I realize this is a very serious illness if not treated, any help will be appreciated.
Answer: yes your right its a serious problem and THANK you for taking your gecko to the vet a lot of people just dont care enough to pay the vet bill. obviously you cant cure the pneumonia liek a vet can ( he will probably use a needle inbetween his front arms kindai n the arm pit) but theres precations you can take to slow down the progress of pneumonia. as you probably know gecko dont have a diaphram so they cant cough up mucis so they get pneumonia pretty easy. the trick is to booste its immune system by adding a little more heat ( only 3-5 degrees) more heat on the basking side. this should hold you off untill a vet visit. good luck with your gecko
