Low Carbohydrate Diets
Question: What is your opinion of low carbohydrate diets?
Answer: great
Question: Metabolic pathways, starvation, Low-carbohydrate diets..Application to nursing practice? With relation to the pathway of carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism, explain the metabolic adjustment during starvation and low carbohydrate diets and the consequences of these adjustments in body function. Discuss knowledge can be used in your role as a nurse?
Answer: your body burns fats (lipids) and carbs first as they produce the most energy, around 36Kj/mol. Proteins (your muscles) produce the least amount of energy, around 17 Kj/mol. on a normal diet your body will burn carbs or turn them into body fat. when you starve your body will slow its meatbolism as much as possible to conserve as much energy as possible. you will burn all excess carbs in the body, the most of your body fat, not all of it, then your muscles, leaving a tiny bit of body fat. low carb diets force your body to burn fat, effectively the body eats itself which is why they are so dangerous.

Question: Are low carbohydrate and high fiber diets the same? Many low carb diets include plenty of vegetables and fruit and whole grains...all of which are high fiber. So...could they be called the same, or is there a difference?
Answer: No low carb and high fibre are not the same. In fact, much of our fibre comes from carbohydrates.
Whole grains etc are also carbohydrates, but they are complex carbohydrates high in fibre, which means our bodies work really hard to convert them ionto energy, and the fibre helps with the digestion process, and feeling full.
Also some vegetables are high in fibre, and carbs such as corn, and others like lettuce and leafy greens have less fibre but are high in water and different nutrients. Low carb diets often mean low simple carbohydrates, like sugars and processed foods.
Question: Low carbohydrate diets-are they truly healthy? If not, how can the good principles of the diet be adapted? We have been following a low-carb diet which I have altered for my kids to allow for their needs in calories and in complex carbohydrates.
I checked my nutrition textbook from college and found reference to low-carb dieting being problematic due to ketosis.
Is the South Beach diet safe? I've come to the conclusion that the principle of eating healthy carbohydrates of whole grains, etc; is a good one, but that people would be wiser to skip the first part of the diet and concentrate on the 2nd phase for weight loss, following the 3rd phase for maintainance.
I'm more concerned with healthy habits than with quick weight loss, and my kids don't need to lose weight.
Anyone have information on this? Experience to share?
Thanks!
Answer: Changing your diet is often the most effective way to lower your cholesterol, your blood pressure, and your weight. You need many different nutrients for good health: protein, fat, carbohydrates, water, and a number of vitamins and minerals. A variety of foods can provide all these nutrients. No single food supplies all you need. Basically, you will want to eat less fat, cholesterol and salt; and eat more complex carbohydrates such as pasta, whole grain breads and beans. Also, you should begin to reduce your consumption of caffeine and alcohol if any.
Altering the way you have eaten all your life is not easy and you should not be discouraged if you revert to your old ways once in a while. The next step is to know as much as you can about the foods that are good for you and family. You should seek advice from a registered dietitian about your very special dietary needs. And good luck.
Question: can low-carbohydrate diets promote health and weight loss?
Answer: Yes, indeed it can. I have been on a low carb diet for 5 years. Thanksgiving will be my official anniversary. I am on Atkins and against popular myths, Atkins has plenty of fruits and vegetables. I have good cholesterol ratios, glucose levels are healthy AND MY TRIGLYCERIDES ARE EXEMPLARY. I didn't mean to scream that but I am leaving it in caps. I lost 30 lbs plus I have improved my health. I also eat a greater variety of food without eating 6 times a day.Itchy skin, migraines, insulin spikes are things from the past. I am off for a check-up today and I will share with you, the results.
Question: Why do people think low carbohydrate high protein diets will help them lose weight?
Im NSCA -CPT
I asked why, because i know it doesn't work. Carbs are your main source of energy. Protien can be used for energy, but it offers far less ATP
if you dont know what ATP is you shouldn't be answering this question.
Answer: because it has been proven to be effective time and time again. increasing the protein intake and decreasing the carb intake not only helps to increase insulin sensitivity but it helps to keep from overeating by increasing satiety. it's basic human physiology, at rest the primary energy source for skeletal muscle is free fatty acids. glucose is only used by skeletal muscle during high intensity exercise. if there is no high intensity exercise being performed regularly then there is no need for a high carbohydrate intake for a population that is getting increasing more sedentary.
the problem is that most people don't realize that the need to make lifestyle changes along with changing the eating habits.
Question: Explain how very low carbohydrate diets cause loss of lean muscle tissue.?
Answer: Very low carbohydrate consumption tends to lower blood glucose levels to the point of triggering the body to produce glucose from glycogen (stored in the muscle tissue and liver) and even amino acids (including muscle protein tissue).
This is more often associated with starvation than with just dieting.
Question: Low carbohydrate diets? Have you tried them and do they work?
Thanks!
Answer: To be honest, going low carb has been the best thing for me.
I used to be very Anti-low carb because I believed in the current advice for so long that a sound plan was 6 small meals a day, balanced whole grain carbs, lean meat, low fat, etc. Still, when I did that, I only went so far. I couldn't break thru to the lean body I wanted so I just chalked it up to having genetics that weren't geared towards being lean.
I began poking around and found a lot of good information on lower carb diets. More out of curiosity than being goal oriented, I switched to a low carb diet (Paleo Diet to be more specific) and the weight dropped off with no extra effort on my part. I went from 195 to 170 in a matter of months and I've been convinced.
It is more of a lifestyle change, so if you do it, don't think you can lose the weight and go back to eating like before with no weight gain, but at the same time, I do allow myself a couple "free meals" a week which includes pizza, pancakes, cookies and the like. After a couple of days back on the diet, I'm back down to my normal healthy weight.
Question: What is a sensible amount of carbs to consume on a low to moderate carbohydrate diet ?....? I don't agree with the drastically low carb diets such as Atkins, I do like to include low gi fruits and non-starchy vegetables.. I want to lose weight sensibly so it will stay off ! I only need to lose 10 pounds. I am very active so need to be realistic here !
I am talking about grams of carbohydrate NOT calories !
Answer: I work out 5 times a week and eat a fairly low carb GI diet. I have a lot of protein and veg including hi energy things like beans, pulses, broccoli etc. I have a small portion of starchy carbs like potatoes or rice as part of a meal per day (a portion about the size of my fist), usually with lunch and no carbs after 7pm. I think the most important thing is to make sure you have a varied diet, eat plenty of greens and avoid things like caffein, sugar, salt and yeast.

Answer: I found it hard to avoid candy and sweets especially on a low carb and a GI diet. I found an online program that is a great balance of meals and real foods. The foods are sweet and can keep you from wanting a candy bar. They are low in carbs, low in calories, but high in protein. My favorite is the Caramel Brownie, but they also have delicious hot chocolate, shakes, tea, and even coffee. The program gives you easy to follow guidelines and ensures you're eating enough calories so you're not starving yourself. I also loved that it included a supplement that wasn't a medication, but controlled my hunger by expanding in the stomach and acting as a filler so you couldn't over eat. It also includes a natural fat burner. One person I know lost 3" from their waist on the program and 10lbs in 28 days.
Question: When on a very low carbohydrate diet for days. Where does the blood glucose come from?
Answer: Since almost all foods contain at least some carbohydrates it's safe to assume that that is where most of your glucose comes from....Other organs in the body that store excess glucose are the liver and the muscles.
The liver releases stored glucose (to be used for energy) when it senses that your blood sugars are dropping to low. It's a defense mechanism.
The muscles will release glucose when the diabetes is almost out of control due to not being treated properly, this also will explain the sudden loss of unexplained weight loss a symptom od diabetes, usually discovered in diabetics who have not yet been diagnosed.

Answer: Atkins . they balance your diet so that any carbs you eat get burned .
search it . it really works.
good luck.
Question: Low carbohydrate Vs low fat diets. Which one you prefer, and why?
Answer: Neither are healthy! Your body needs a decent amount of complex carbs and cutting down can really damage your arteries. Your body also really needs fats for healthy skin and brain cells, it's just important to make sure it's from the right sources.
In terms of weight loss, calories is all you need to control. Cutting down on whole food groups is the wrong way to go.

Question: When on a low carbohydrate diet am i supposed to follow the carbs' per 100grams or the carbs of which sugars?
Answer: What kind of low-carb diet are you on?
To make it simple, just do not take in processed carbs like white bread and white rice. The only white thing in your fridge should be eggs.
You can take carbs in the form of brown bread and whole-wheat/whole-grains.
Also avoid sugar.... any sugar even the artificial ones. Recent studies (i read it yesterday) indicated that long term usage of artificial sweeteners makes people gain weight for some unknown reason.
Question: A question about low carbohydrate diet.? I have just been told to watch my carbs due to my triglycerides being high. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to go on a low carb diet without "withdrawls". I love carbs. Do any of you have any good recipes that you love that would taste as good as a carb recipe? Thank you for your time and kindness.
I don't really eat sweets or drink sodas. I do eat alot of carbs, pastas, breads, potatos, etc.... My HDL is low, so I do need to exercise also. I do not want to cut out all the carbs. Thanks for all your answers.
Thank you Christine. I have heard about the "mashed" potatos before and thought ewwwww, but with the bacon in it, it makes it sound more yummm. I will try it.
Answer: I agree with some of the other answers that you should be careful not to try to cut out ALL carbs. Remember that fruits and vegetable have carbs and you still need to eat these regularly.
I have a great faux "mashed potato" recipe. It came from a low-carb cookbook.
You use a head of cauliflower cooked in salted, boiling water until soft. Mash it and mix it with some butter, salt, pepper and shredded cheddar cheese. Put in a greased casserole dish and sprinkle with crumbled bacon. Bake at 350 until bubbly. YUM!
Question: Low carbohydrate, high protein diet questions :)? Ok, so i know about the stages you go through on a low carbohydrate diet and using fat stores for energy.. ketosis.. etc..
but i would like to know how much weight i can loose on this sort of plan?
i am female, 5'6
120 pounds
i have tried this for the past week and so far i have lost about 2 pounds, buti dont know whether this is just water weight.
i have eaten roughly about 1200 calories per day and i do a fair amount of walking as i never go by car or public transport.
a typical days food has been:
Breakfast: Omelet with grated cheese and chicken breast pieces
Lunch: Chicken or fish (sardines, prawns etc) with lettuce and 1 babybel cheese
Dinner: Lean meat or fish (salmon, prawns, cod, beef, chicken) with mixed vegetables (carrots, broccoli, beans, cauliflower) with one tablespoon of rice, pasta or a boiled potato.
drinks: water, squash, herbal tea
snacks: Apple, grapes, cheese, ham, a biscuit (occasional piece of chocolate)
is this diet low-carb enough? if i followed this plan for a month how much weight ould i be expected to lose? i also go for a run a few times a week.
thankyou!! :)
Answer: I'd like to see you separate those meals out a bit more. You should be taking about 5 meals daily. Those are all excellent foods you have listed above, just try to split them up a bit more. Of course, also make sure you're drinking plenty of water, and it would certainly help you to run on a more regular, regimented schedule. Calisthenics will also help you tone up.
If you stick with just the diet, you could expect to lose about 5-10 lbs in one month, provided that you really stay with it. Exercising on a regular basis will enhance your results.
Cheers
