Question: Can you eat any low fat foods on the Atkins diet? Hi all-
This is my second time doing Atkins Induction. I lost 9 lbs before and I would like to lose another 15. Anyway, I went grocery shopping to stock up on Atkins friendly foods. Did good but realized when I got home that the Hebrew National's I bought are 97% fat free and the String Cheese is low fat. I don't know if I can still eat those... Anyone? Thanks in advance!
Answer: Usually not. They usually replace fat in low fat foods with either sugar or starches. Check the labels but I would wait til after induction even if they are low enough.
There is no reason to ever go off a low carb way of eating, you slowly re introduce carbs to your way of eating and as long as you don't exceed 9grams of carbs an hour (144 carbs a day) you will never trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone) no matter the calories. Most of us do low carb most of the time and occasionally cheat and slip back into low carb the next day. I still cheat with sugar occasionally. It's just not a regular part of my life (as it was preAtkins, nearly 6 years ago, when I felt it controlled me & I had no control)
The rungs to reintroduction of carbs in 5 gram units - all available to very active people in as little as 11 weeks. Make sure you do them in order & you can skip a rung if you do not intend to include it in your permanent way of eating, such as the alcohol rung.:
* (minimum week 3 - maximum 25grams day) Acceptable vegetables, larger quantities
* (minimum week 4 - maximum 30grams day) Add 5grams Fresh cheese
* (minimum week 5 - maximum 35grams day) Add 5grams Nuts and seeds
* (minimum week 6 - maximum 40grams day) Add 5grams Berries
* (minimum week 7 - maximum 45grams day) Alcohol can be added if desired
* (minimum week 8 - maximum 50grams day) Add 5grams Legumes
* (minimum week 9 - maximum 55grams day) Add 5grams Other fruits
* (minimum week10 - maximum 60grams day) Add 5grams Starchy vegetables
* (minimum week11 - maximum 65grams day) Add 5grams Whole grains
If you are continuing to lose or maintain (whichever is goal) in week 12 and beyond, you continue to add 5grams a day per week til you reach your personal carb level.
Many people gain weight on high carb, then switch to low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb that they gain weight. (Isn't insanity defined as doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way and expecting different results??) Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar and maintain weight or health.
You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.
Your body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow your metabolism to compensate and store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering your calories, it will continue lowering that set point, til you can survive off nothing and store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of food.
Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) and exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.
The core of the Atkins program is converting your body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). You need to keep your fat levels at >65% of your calories, if you don't your body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).
Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) triggers insulin, the fat storage hormone. The more protein you eat the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released.
High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger and unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.
Ground flax seed (2-4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.
The first 2 weeks you can have several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce and celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers and more variety of vegetables thereafter add 5 grams per day additional (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) every week til you gain weight, then you subtract 10 carbs. That would give you your personal carb level (everyone is different and it depends on how active you are.) As long as you remain <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control, and shouldn't gain weight no matter the calories, because insulin the only fat storage hormone is not triggered.
Question: Can people tell the difference between low-fat foods and regualr foods? OK, so I need some help on my science fair project...I need to know if people can tell the diffrence between the low-fat foods and regualr foods...well, all I really need right now is a good hypothesis, PLEASE!
It's just a hypothesis, PLEASE!
Answer: Some have more harmful chemicals than others, and it isn`t always the low-fat ones.
Nutrition? How about trying to find out how much nutrition there really is in a normal diet or how many harmful preservatives. Watch your back.
Question: Why do so many low fat foods have higher sodium? When looking for low fat food choices, the sodium is usually higher. How can that be?
What is a good way to make low sodium popcorn at home in the microwave that still tastes good?
Answer: Fat adds flavour to foods, when most or all of it is removed, it changes the flavour of the food. A lot of commercial low fat foods will have additives to add flavour (like salt or sugar) to make up for the lack of fat. Look for foods that are low fat, low sodium and low in sugar. The best way to do this is to make a home made version of the food (if you can), that way YOU get to control the ingredients.
Question: can anyone give me some good ideas for fat-free or very low-fat snack foods? I am on susan powter's "stop the insanity" and I love it; but I am trying to find more low-fat foods and non-fat foods for variety.
Answer: Celery sticks are great. My kids like them as "Ant Boats". Put a thin strip of low fat peanut butter on the celery and raisins on top for the ants.
There are a ton of 100 calorie packs at your supermarket. These are great for small on the go snacking. Especially the small containers.
Edamame is great for a light snack. Oh and Angel Food cake is completely fat free!
Good Luck and Cheers :)
Question: What low fat foods taste really nice? My cousin has been very ill recently and now she has to go on a low fat diet. Are there any tasty foods that are very low in fat content?
Thanks
Answer: A salad with your favorite veggies and fruits with just lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil as dressing.
Question: Title for my project on low fat and fatty foods? okay, so my friend and i are doing a project on low fat foods and regular foods, what is a catchy title that we could use?
Answer: "How much fat is in that?"
Question: Are low fat foods something more common in America than other countries? As an American I'm well aware that obesity and overweight problems exist within the US and therefore can understand the push of all food products that are low calorie, low fat, however is it like this in other countries too? I mean my brother's friend came to visit from Europe and when he was here he was frustrated that he could only find mainly low fat and low calorie products in stores and was upset a lot of places didn't have whole milk or just normal non low fat low calorie products.
Answer: Low fat products are very common in Brazil specially in Rio de Janeiro. I normally prefer them to the normal ones.
I just try to keep the calories as low as possible which is always very good specially for the health.
Question: Is eating Fat Free or Low Fat foods worse than eating regular foods? I've recently heard that Low Fat and Fat Free subsitutes is worse than regular food. I always buy Fat Free or Low Fat everything from butter, salad dressing to baking mix. Recently I heard that the Low Fat & Fat Free foods have much more carbohydrates, sugars, and chemicals. Is this true? In order to have a healthy diet should I not eat any Low Fat or Fat Free foods but only buy the "real" thing such as full fat butter, etc? Please help. Thanks :)
Answer: Yes, they often have added sugar. It depends what you would rather have: more calories or fat or sugar, etc.
Also olestra is added to a lot of fat free and it is artificial
Question: Why do 'low fat' varieties of foods contain more sugar than the 'usual' variety? Have you ever checked the nutrition panel? Almost all lower fat foods contain more suger than their regular counterpart.
Answer: When my husband was diagnosed with diabetes the nutritionist told us that if it low fat they add more sugar and salt, if it is low sugar they add more fat and salt, if it is low salt they add more fat and sugar. Companies do this to trick people into thinking the food is healthy. They have to replace what they take out so it still taste good.
Question: Why are fat-free and low-fat foods bad for you? I'm trying to convince my friend that fat-free and low-fat foods are bad for so, and so are sugar-free foods. I used to know the reason for this, but I have forgotten now. Can someone remind me please?
I hate such foods by the way.
Answer: Well, they are not all bad for you actually. It depends on the product and company. I buy light sour cream, and yogurt and ice cream. The comapanies I choose make these products with lower fat, such as with skim milk. So they are more healthy, in my opinion. Some sugar-free products are ok too. Sugar substitutes made of chemicals are the ones that are not good for you, but some sugar-free treats are made with cactus extract, cane juice, honey and other natural sweeteners. It's all about reading labels.
Question: Extremely low calorie and low fat foods? What are some extremely low calorie and low fat foods that I could eat?
I'm thinking like 100 calories or less... and not one of those gross 100 calorie snack packs or whatever.
please and thanks!
anything would be GREAT!
Answer: any fruit or vegetable
Wonder makes light wheat or light white bread that is 40 calories per slice, you could use light butter and splenda and sugar to make cinnamon toast,
or you could use lowfat cheese slices between the toasted slices and microwave to melt the cheese (I like to dip this in ketchup).
I also like to butter the toast and sprinkle garlic powder on top for garlic toast
Spread the toast with light cream cheese and sugar free jelly
Try rolling a banana in melted semi-sweet choc chips (only about 1 tablespoon or so) then sprinkle a few chopped nuts on top, you can do this with cut up apple too
Try Lipton cup-a-soup, they make creamy chicken, tomato, and chicken noodle, you can add some pepper and a few crumbled crackers
you can buy individual fruit cups
Eat a cut up tomato with your favorite salad dressing (only about 2 tablespoons, watch for calories may want to use light dressing)
Question: How do they make foods low fat? How do they make foods low fat? Specifically, regular potato chips versus baked lays. Is it because they fry the regular? And for hot dogs, light vs. regular. What makes a hot dog low fat?
Answer: your right about the chips, frying adds fat. Most of the time with hot dogs its going to be the type of meat they use. Some low fat products are just smalled portions (stay away from these) others or the type of sweetener they use (i would watch out for these too) if your looking for low fat food try natural foods and baked not fried (anything). Lean meats just mean that is the least fattening part of the animal so those are good also. Hope this helps.
Question: What are some high energy low fat/calorie foods? I dance and exercise a lot, am in constant shows so i don't want to be eating anything too stodgy, but i was just wondering if there are any high energy low calorie/fat foods that i can have to keep my energy up during the day?

Answer: Go to your local sporting goods store and order some Power Bars or some Hammer Energy Bars.
